It is just the fact that we have to live with, that we should expect more floods this year, as been predicted by NIMET. However, for every response, indigenous knowledge and citizenship reporting has helped in countries that are witnessing such.If you are in Lagos, remember there is an emergency toll free number - 767. Please share! Nevertheless, there are several things to do in an emergency situation like floods which as been more prevalent in Nigeria 1. Get an emergency supply kit which includes items like non-perishable food, water, a battery-powered or hand-crank radio, extra flashlights and batteries. 2. Make a plan for the family in case you get separated , to make a contact and meeting point when separate. 3. Stay informed on current situation. Other important things that should be done in an emergency situation are: 1. Be aware that flash flooding can occur, and if there is possibility it will happen, then move to a higher ground. 2. Be aware of streams, drainage channels, etc. 3. Move furniture in house to an upper floor. 4. Disconnect all electricity appliances and do not touch electrical equipment when it is wet. 5. Do not walk through moving water and do not drive as well. With that said, community habits especially waste disposal should be addressed by each of us. Many communities in Nigeria are not aware of this issue and for instance dispose tons of waste in nearby drainage and rivers. Please advise and instruct such communities to desist from such act, its just the little we can do to help one another! FYI: If you are privileged to have internet connection often, and have some spare time, why not join a group of Nigerians volunteering to create a data set for Nigeria, to be used whenever we have emergencies such as drought, floods and other disasters. Dear one and all, No one can take the place of government programs, nor can it single-handedly cure the ills and disparities of society. But each of us can make a difference in a small way, in our own sphere, and can find ways to help that will make our efforts worth the time and trouble we invest in them. You might be thinking, "The little bit that I can do will never help much!" or "What in Nigeria can I do?" If you've ever spent ten minutes reading a book to a lonely child, you know that even that small amount of compassion and attention can make a world of difference. No one person can solve Nigeria and the world's problems, but what little you do can make your little corner of Nigeria — or one far away from yours a happier, healthier, safer place to live for those who need your help. Each of us can right a wrong, fill a plate, tell the driver to be patient, rescue a victim, deliver a meal, tend a public garden, mentor a child or whatever action inspires you. Just jump in and take action! On Saturday, March 31, 2012, we will be showing and sharing how much we could do for the planet, our environment - The Earth Hour Walk will be holding in three cities in Nigeria at 8.00am Lagos: Allen Avenue roundabout, Ikeja to Marwa Gardens Ibadan: The University of Ibadan, Halt Point is TBD Abuja: Mr Biggs, 3rd Avenue Gwarinpa to Jabi Gardens If you will be at any of these cities, kindly register for the walk at http://www.earthhourng.org The Earth Hour Charity Walk will be holding a minute silence for victims of floods in Lagos, Ibadan, Northeastern Nigeria and those vulnerable children at the Horn of Africa. Volunteering is the act of donating one's time and skills for a cause. Volunteers typically join an organization they admire to contribute to its growth, or join a project because they strongly believe in a cause and want to play a role in affecting its outcomes, perhaps in expectation of honorarium. Earth Hour is coordinated by WWF (World Wide Fund For Nature) in more than 70 countries, and by other brilliant partners in an additional 50 countries/regions. Earth Hour is laying more emphasis on people and businesses making personal resolutions to live more sustainably - not just for the Earth Hour but every hour. Consequently, we need your help to empower the Nigerian citizens to get involved, not only on the day or night but to make a resolution to change their lifestyle in the name of our survival. The Earth Hour Nigeria Team hopes to recruit volunteers (virtual and non-virtual ) for its Earth Hour Walk 2012 project coming up on Saturday, March 31, 2012 in Lagos, Abuja and Ibadan .For volunteers, they will be trained in using ICT for social development; Health, Safety and Environment. If you are interested, kindly fill out the volunteer form at http://earthhourng.org/volunteer.html |
