One of the tactical points was that Cesc Fabregas was used as a no.10, Oscar was dropped to the bench and Ramires slotted in alongside Nemanja Matic. The idea was to get Fabregas into the game more, reduce his defensive responsibilities and get him impacting the play again. He got an assist for Diego Costa’s goal as a result of this tweak.

Ramires though was very poor and it was his inability to keep hold of the ball in the first half that caused Chelsea problems as they didn’t manage to keep possession ticking over. He lost the ball too routinely and was unable to hold it.

Ramires, as we can see above, misplaced a number of passes and completed just 60% of his attempted 30 passes in the tie. It was a very bad performance from Ramires who didn’t command the midfield at all. He didn’t control the ball nor did he win it very well for Chelsea. He was sort of stuck. Two tackles, no interceptions and one clearance was not very impressive for a defensive midfielder.

This has become recurring theme. Ramires did well in a 4-3-3 under Carlo Ancelotti and later under Roberto di Matteo but in the 4-2-3-1 formation he has no obvious role. He’s careless on the ball and often gets it trapped under his feet when running and is not a good enough passer to fill the ball playing role of the two. He’s been used as a utility man but in truth it is because Chelsea do not have a good enough back up player in the defensive midfield area to cover for Fabregas or Matic. Ramires should be sold in the summer and a specialist player brought in. He is not good enough for this formation and for where Chelsea want to go. It’s time for them to let him leave and for the squad to be rejigged a bit, even if Mourinho envisages a quiet summer.
