Apples are a popular and healthy fruit. They are also healthy, with antioxidant properties that help protect against cancer-inducing oxidative damage that can lead to various health problems. The saying “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” has withstood the test of time because of the impressive health profile of apples. But as you bite deep into an apple, reaching its core, you are confronted with something not so sweet: tiny black seeds. Unlike the sweet tang of the fruit, the tiny black seeds found in an apple’s core are another story. They contain amygdalin, a substance that releases cyanide when it comes into contact with human digestive enzymes, but acute toxicity is rare with accidental ingestion of seeds. How Cyanide Works Cyanide is a chemical that has gained infamy as one of the deadliest poisons with a long history in chemical warfare and mass suicide. Many compounds that contain cyanide — called cyanoglycosides — are found in nature, often in fruit seeds. Amygdalin is one of these. Apple seeds, as well as many other fruit seeds or pits, have a strong outer layer that is resistant to digestive juices. But if you chew the seeds, amygdalin could be released in the body and produce cyanide. Small amounts can be detoxified by enzymes in your body, but large amounts can be dangerous. Apple seeds contain amygdalin, a substance that releases cyanide into the blood stream when chewed and digested. When comparing the amount of cyanide present in apple seeds with the amount needed to induce death, apple seeds in small amounts do not contain enough cyanide to cause harm. However, it is better to spit out seeds to avoid any potential issues.

Dr. Ochuko Erikainure, a Senior Research Officer at the Federal Institute of Industrial Research, Oshodi, Lagos State, has warned that Okra also called Okro, though very nutritious, can lead to infertility in men of reproductive age. Erukainure, also a nutritionist and biochemist, added that the vegetable also has some form of effect on sex. He said: “Okra is a hardy plant that can grow even with less water and in hot conditions. It has a unique substance called Gossypol. “Gossypol inhibits sperm production and motility by blocking several enzymes that are highly important in energy metabolism in sperm and sperm producing cells. “Okra seeds are very rich in toxic pigment called Gossypol, which promote infertility in men by arresting sperm production (spermatogenesis) even at lower dose. “Gossypols are oil soluble and natural polyphenol secreted by plants as a defence against predators.” The senior researcher, who said in some countries, okra seeds were used as natural contraceptive for men, also listed its health benefits. He said: “Due to proapoptotic (killing of cells) activities in okra seeds, gossypol is still under investigation as a possible anticancer agent.” “Okra is very high in dietary fibres, reduces calories intakes into the body, ability to limit nitric oxide build up in the blood and lipid (fat) and reduces the risks of cancers. “Okra is an African vegetable that has been a staple of African and Indian cuisine for many years and also used for medicinal purposes. “One hundred grammes of okra have been reported to meet over 20 per cent of the daily values, which the body needs. “It contains a rare combination of carbohydrates, vegetables, minerals, vitamins and also a potent anti-diabetic source, which can be attributed to its chemical constituents. “Not less than 10 different vitamins and minerals can be found in okra such as vitamin A, which is great for the skin, vitamin C and E which prevent cell damage in the body.”

NYSC 1. Why will a graduate waste a whole year in a field not related to his discipline, 2. Why will a graduate of engineering, scientists, social sciences be sent to a primary or secondary school to go and teach. 3. What is paltry #19800 a month in this economic situation of the country. 4. They say is to promote peace “really” Ways some of the issues above can be addressed: 1. The Government should provide nationwide institutions of training for graduates that will engage them for like 2-3 months on their respective discipline. 2. construction, manufacturing and or building companies will train engineers while the like computer scientists will be trained on ICT firms etc. Then all those that studied Education can be sent to schools. 3. Instead of paying a paltry 19800 that not worth anything let the Government provide a comprehensive 1yr of that 19800 and give to the graduate on completion of the 2-3 months training as empowerment for them instead of wasting a whole year without savings. 4. They say it’s to promote peace amongst Nigerians, peace will be ensured in the nation by various means and don’t tell me that NYSC is the best way because that was those days not in this age. If the leaders are indeed serious about peace they know what to do. My own thought anyway Add your own views, pls no insulting |
