THE FALLIBILITY OF THE MEN OF GOD Gavin Aleogho Before 1870 AD, no Pope was considered fallible. Even before then, Pope Adrian VI said “It is certain that the Pontiff ... may err in those things which pertain to faith.” Similarly, Pope Paul IV said “I do not doubt that I and my predecessors may sometimes have erred.” These were men that were sincere to themselves and to the world; they understood the frailty of the human nature, the tendency of humans to err. The infallibility of the Pope is a dogma in the Catholic Church that states that “when (the Papacy is), in the exercise of his office as Shepherd and Teacher of all Christians, in virtue of his supreme apostolic authority, he defines a doctrine concerning faith or morals to be held by the whole Church.” This implies that the interpretation of the Scripture by the Roman Pontiff who is the Pope is and should be held as the accurate truth, void of no error as it relates to moral, doctrine and the Christian faith. In 1517 AD, Martin Luther the Reformer led a protest against the authority of the Papacy on issues bordering on Church malpractices and the interpretation of the Scriptures especially in matters that concerns the basic tenets of the Christian faith, thereby challenging the ‘Infallibility of the Pope’. Down through the line, the Reformers, which were also known as the Protestants, gave birth to what is now known as the Pentecostal, Charismatic or/and Evangelical. Ironically, the same points that the Protestants objected to in 1517 AD are now being repeated by some Pentecostal and Evangelical Church of today. There is this unspoken but profound belief that whatever a man of God says is void of error and should be taken as a sole truth coming from God Almighty. It should not be questioned or subjected to scrutiny and verification. This has come to be because of the imaginary high position that some ministers of the gospel have placed themselves or they have been placed by their followers. This has given rise to mass duplication of heresies and spiritual error; all these because men have refused to acknowledge their limitations. I am not suggesting that man through the help of the Holy Spirit cannot give accurate interpretation to the Scripture in matters that relates to doctrine and the Christian faith. What I am suggesting is that every Christian should learn to verify and cross examine whatever any man of God says to them or practise as doctrine. Know God by yourself. Study the Scripture by yourself. You can achieve this feat because you have the same access to the same God and the Holy Spirit dwells in you. In our world today, especially in the Pentecostal and Evangelical settings, you will find many ministers of the gospel who indirectly claim sole ownership of Christianity and the Church, the body of Christ! They believe they have the prerequisite to dictate how the music goes in Christendom. With such position, it’s my opinion that we are only repeating the errors of history - the errors of the Church that caused the Great Schism and the Reformation. Every human is capable of error. Jesus Christ was exempted because he was conceived of the Holy Ghost and not of an earthly father. Being born again, Spirit filled and Word loaded does not exclude any man from error. This is given to the fact that men are still putting on this flesh that is frail. The moment we accept this truth, the easier it will be to embrace the advice of Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 10:12 (MSG) which reads: Don't be so naive and self-confident. You're not exempt. You could fall flat on your face as easily as anyone else. Forget about self-confidence; it's useless. Cultivate God-confidence. All ministers of the gospel are humans, and all humans make mistakes, irrespective of the genuine men of God; they are also fallible. However, that does not negate the fact that they are called into the ministry. Human mistakes should be condoned, but spiritual errors, wrong interpretation and application of the Scriptures and doctrinal errors should be considered as falsehood and be discarded. Every believer must be on the watch against any form of falsehood in the Church especially from respected clergymen. In Galatians 2:11-14, Paul withstood Apostle Peter when it seems Peter was living a double standard life despite the fact that he was supposed to be an elder of the Church. This implies that not even the first apostles were excluded from getting things wrong. One of the great strategies of the devil against the Church is to strike the Shepherd so as to scatter the sheep. Take for example, if a leader of a Church of 5,000 members makes spiritual error in the interpretation and application of the Scripture, he will successfully lead his 5000 congregation into error. This is the strategy the devil has been using for ages and he has been successful with it simply because leaders have refused to acknowledge their imperfection, and their followers so venerate and dignify them as beyond the ordinary- divine and free of making errors. Leaders in the Church of Christ must acknowledge their limitations as humans. They must know that they are mere men, susceptible to errors. Any man can fall anytime. Any man of God can veer into heresy anytime. That is why Apostle Paul wrote by the Holy Ghost: Because of the privilege and authority God has given me, I give each of you this warning: Don't think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves by the faith God has given us. Romans 12:3 NLT Down through the history, great men of God have come and gone. Many started well but ended poorly. If you are a student of Christian history and biography, you will agree with me that most of them failed in one aspect or the other. Most of them started well but later veered into error and heresy. This has given birth to the different sects, denominations and cults in Christianity today. Most of the Israelites who followed Moses out of Egypt to the Promised Land might not have been aware that there was a bridge between the relationship of Moses their great leader and God, after he struck the rock for water rather than speaking to it. Likewise, you might be surprised to find out who you call your spiritual father or mentor has already missed it and he is already working in disobedience before God. Just like King Saul, some of our great ministers that started well; the spirit of God has already left them! Every Christian must also acknowledge the fact concerning our Christian leaders and mentors. Thank God for their great achievements, but don’t be fooled that because of their spiritual great feat they can’t err. We must know that our leaders are not all-knowing or all-powerful, but they have weaknesses. That is why it is good to always scrutinize and evaluate our spiritual leaders’ views of scriptural interpretation, not with the eyes of being judgmental, but with an open mind so as not to be led into error. This should compel us to have a direct and personal working relationship with God the Father, through His Son Jesus Christ, according to the Bible and not connecting our faith on any man of God or any denomination, sect or Church. We should let our faith be based on God’s original word rather than what one Pastor, General Overseer, Apostle, Prophet, Evangelist, Bishop, Reverend or Teacher says. For the veil has been divided; you now have direct access to God. This is Apostle Paul’s own confession: “We know only a portion of the truth, and what we say about God is always incomplete… We don't yet see things clearly. We're squinting in a fog, peering through a mist. But it won't be long before the weather clears and the sun shines bright! We'll see it all then, see it all as clearly as God sees us, knowing him directly just as he knows us!” 1 Corinthians 13:9, 12 MSG. |
45 Biblical Reasons Why You Should Not Pray Against Human Enemies By Gavin Aleogho The core value of Christianity is LOVE. Love should be the platform from which everything should be done in the Christian faith; whether it’s preaching, praying, relating, living or whatever; because love is the greatest and God is love (1 John 4:8, 1 Corinthians 13:13, Galatians 5:6). When you put that into perspective, especially in the aspect of prayer, you will observe that many things are not being done right, especially in the African Pentecostal and Evangelical Churches. The ‘Fathers of faith’ who supposed to know better are playing ignorant to this aspect of the application of love in prayers by bluntly turning the instructions of our Lord Jesus Christ (who should be our primary example) upside down. ‘Ministers of God’ pray and lead their members to pray contrary to the instructions of our Master Jesus. They organize vigils, revivals, teachings and also writing books and articles on subjects that have to do with praying against human enemy. Thousands of flyers and billboards like: “Your enemy must die”, “Night of Blood”, “Night of Vengeance”, “Burial of my destiny Enemies”, “Every witch must die”, “Operation point and kill”, “The enemies in my house must die” and many others are indications of how deep we are getting things wrong. I must quickly reiterate here again that I believe in warfare prayers targeted not at any human but against the host of the devil (Ephesians 6:12). Definitely, people would declare themselves or become enemies to us whether knowingly or unknowingly. But from our own side, no man should be viewed as our enemy, rather, we should see them as the image of God. Therefore, we should never wish or pray evil against anybody simply because we thought they are bad, while we are good or righteous. Ironically, Churches, Christians and Ministers of God today are blindly turning against the instructions of Christ our Lord, and throwing into the trash, His instructions to love our enemies (Matthew 5:44-48). Here are 45 biblical reasons why such prayers are wrong: Jesus Christ is our Lord, Saviour, Model and our Example NOT any Old Testament figure. Hebrews 12:2. 1 Peter 2:21-25 Jesus Christ is the Word of God and the fulfillment of the Old Testament, His instruction supersedes any person before Him and after Him. John 1:1, 14. Matthew 5:17. Jesus Christ commanded that we pray for our enemies not against them. Matthew 5:43 Our Lord Jesus commanded that we bless those that curses us. Matthew 5:44. We are in the New Testament where Christ instructs us to love our enemies. Matthews 5:44. We are not in the Old Testament where the law of “tooth for a tooth” holds. Matthew 5:38-42. Jesus came to seek and save (not to kill and destroy) those (including your enemies) that are lost in witchcraft, occultism, etc. Luke 19:9-11. Luke 5:32. Jesus Christ our example did not pray against those that crucified Him. He prayed God to forgive them. Luke 23:34. Praying against enemies is not outlined in the Lord’s prayer rather, having mercy was spoken about there. Matthew 6:9-13. The law and instruction of Jesus Christ supersedes the law or instructions from any Old Testament figure like Moses, David, Elijah and the rest. Hebrews 1:1-2, Hebrews 3:1-6. Prayer against enemies is an Old Testament practice that has been done away with. 2 Corinthians 3:7. Prayer against enemies is not an acceptable New Testament prayer. Romans 12:19-21, Matthew 5:38-48. The gospel of Christ is the gospel of Love not hatred. 1 John 3:14-15. Vengeance against enemies is God’s prerogative not ours. Romans 12:19-21. Prayer against enemies negate the law of love that we operate by in the New Testament. 1 John 4:20-21 Prayer against enemies is the way of unbelievers not the way of Christ followers. Matthews 5:46 The early Christians and Apostles did not pray against their enemies. Stephen a New Testament apostle showed us an example even till his death. Acts 7:59-60. Praying against enemies contradicts the love we are expected to show as Christ representatives. 1 John 3:14-15. The downfall of the wicked should never be our joy. Proverbs 24:17. God does not wish that any man should perish because of my prayer. 2 Peter 3:9. We can’t use the same mouth to bless God and curse or pray against any man. James 3:10. Prayer against enemies will create in you a hatred mentality and makes you unnecessarily suspicious of things and people. James 3:14-16. You can’t pray against enemies and still walk in love (God). 1 John 3:14-15. We are people of love, compassion and mercy not people of vengeance. 1 Peter 3:8-15 God does not answer such prayer because it is not praying according to the will of God. It is praying amiss. 1 John 5:14-15. God’s ways are not ours. Jonah wanted God to kill the wicked people of Nineveh but God decided to spare them. Jonah 4:1-2. Praying against enemies is lack of faith in God’s word that “no evil will not come near you.” Proverbs 12:21, Psalms 91:10. There is no difference between you and your enemies if you wish them the same evil they wish you. Luke 6:32. It is believing in the enemies’ ability to hurt that necessitates praying against them. Job 3:25. Prayer against enemies might lead you to hell. Revelation 22:18-19. We should have faith in God’s ability to protect than the enemies’ ability to hurt. 1 Corinthians 15:57. 2 Corinthians 2:14. We should have more faith in what God has made us than what the devil can do. 1 John 4:4. Ephesians 2:6. We are already above the enemies and their powers. Luke 10:19 We are already more than a conqueror. Romans 8:37 No man can harm me if I’m following what is good. 1 Peter 3:13 It is gain to the Kingdom of God when they are saved than when they die and go to hell. Luke 15:7. Showing love to your enemies will make God to keep you save from their evil with a reward. Proverbs 25:21-22. If you believe in “suffer not a witch to live” (Exodus 22:18), then you have to apply every instruction that is in that passage and in the law. Remember that the law of Moses speaks of killing witches physically not spiritually. Can you physically kill a witch and expect not to face the law of the land or face the eternal judgement of God? Our ambition to prosper does not warrant anybody dying. For God blesses His Children even in the midst of their enemies. Psalms 23:5. The battlefield of life is primarily in our mind, not with anybody. 2 Corinthians 10:5. Our battle is spiritual not against humans that has flesh and blood. 2 Corinthians 10:3-4 Our primary focus is to crumble the powers behind the wicked and not the human being that is been used ignorantly. 2 Corinthians 10:3, Ephesians 6:12. Anybody can decide to be enemy to us. But we are not permitted to be enemies to anybody, rather, we are instructed to live in peace, love and honour all men irrespective of whether they are enemies to us or not. 1 Peter 2:17, Hebrews 12:14. Finally, all of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous; not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary blessing, knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing. For "He who would love life And see good days, Let him refrain his tongue from evil, And his lips from speaking deceit. Let him turn away from evil and do good; Let him seek peace and pursue it. For the eyes of the LORD are on the righteous, And His ears are open to their prayers; But the face of the LORD is against those who do evil." And who is he who will harm you if you become followers of what is good? But even if you should suffer for righteousness' sake, you are blessed. "And do not be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled. But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear;”. 1 Peter 3:8-15. THE MYTH CALL ‘HOLY GHOST FIRE' By Gavin Aleogho If there is a phrase that is commonly used by Africa Christians especially during prayer, it is the phrase “Holy Ghost Fire”. Have you ever stop to ask yourself what is the meaning of this phrase “Holy Ghost Fire”? What is its origin? Is it biblical? To be sincere, I also used this phrase in the past. On the average, this phrase is being used to pass judgement of fire on a perceived enemy. Just like I overheard a neighbour saying that “every one that is gossiping her, Holy Ghost Fire will burn them”. Is there any place in the scripture where the Holy Ghost Fire is said to be our weapon of war against our enemies? Or is the Holy Ghost Fire a supposed weapon of war in warfare prayer? Okay, let go to the Bible which is the foundation and guide to our Christian life. I’ve read on several times the Bible from Genesis to Revelation and I can tell you boldly, that there is no one place that the phrase “Holy Ghost Fire” appeared! So, where did it originate from? There is no record that shows that our Fathers of faith ever used this phrase. Even up to date, the western and eastern world where Christianity spread from never used this phrase. I perceived that many people that pray with such phrase tends to follow Elijah’s example in the Old Testament where on two occasions he called down fire. One of which was during his encounter with the prophets of Baal (1 Kings 18:21-40). If you study the account of Elijah and the prophets of Baal, you will realize that Elijah never called down fire on the false prophets. As a matter of facts, the calling down of fire by Elijah was on the prepared altar and the purpose was to validate that Jehovah God is the true and only God that should be worshiped and not the other way round as some may want to believe. The second occasion was with the Captains and their respective armies of fifty whom Prophet Elijah called down fire to consume. Yes, that was in the Bible (2 Kings 1:9-14). But was it the supposed “Holy Ghost Fire” he called? The Scripture did not say so. Notwithstanding, when you fast forward to the New Testament, when John and James, the disciples of Jesus wanted to err in this regard; they wanted to do want Elijah did (just like many Christians are doing today). Jesus rebuked them. He corrected them and said that His mission (just as it should be every Christian’s mission) is not to destroy men’s life, but to save them. “And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did? But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of. For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them.” Luke 9:54-56. Do you think you are so righteous enough to call fire on another man? Who approves or what qualifies you to think that you can walk in Elijah’s footstep when even the Lord never approved such an act? Do you think you would have been alive today if, before you knew Christ, other Christians prayed fire on you? Growth in Christianity is inevitable. As you grow in your Christian walk, you have to learn to x-ray every teaching and doctrine in the light of the Bible, the Word of God which is the final authority on any subject matter. We have to learn to uphold the basic tenets of the Bible and discount anything that is unbiblical which are just what I would call “spiritual excesses”. Come to look at it; is it wrong to use a phrase that is not biblical? I don’t think so. What is really important is the motive of using it. Is the motive biblical? On this subject matter, many use it with a mind-set that they are setting their perceived enemy on fire. Jesus never taught that the Holy Ghost would be a "fire" which should be used to burn and destroy our enemies. Praying with such phrase is common during presumed “warfare prayer”. Am I against warfare prayer? No! I do believe there is warfare prayer as we may want to call it. But you should know that this war is not against humans but against the devil and his demons. Besides, I think “Fire Judgement” is exclusively reserved for God to use. There is no place in the Bible where a person (whether the Israelites, prophets, priests or Apostles) used fire on their perceived enemies except Prophet Elijah. Were these people mentioned having enemies then? Yes! The Israelites where surrounded by nations that hated them. The Apostles had the Roman and some Jews who were persecuting them. Yet, none in the New Testament prayed for fire to come down on their foes. The Holy Spirit, also known as the Holy Ghost; is the third person of the trinity. The scripture shows that the Holy Ghost on different occasion is referred to symbolically as either a dove, wind, oil, cloud, water, or even fire (Acts 2:3). But the Holy Spirit is not dove, wind, water or fire but a Person. The Holy Spirit is God. Attaching fire to Him to have Holy Ghost Fire doesn’t automatically turn the Holy Ghost to a destructive fire which can be used to burn whatever or whoever we wish. God is indeed a consuming fire (Hebrews 12:29). And what do you think is the characteristics of God's kind of fire in respect to man? If there is actually Holy Ghost fire; it means that the fire must be holy, with the characteristics of what it takes to be holy and righteous. It will be pure with pure motive. God’s kind of fire is for purification, baptism, sanctification and can also be for judgement like in the case of Sodom and Gomorrah. Jesus promised the Holy Spirit before His departure from earth. The purposes of the Holy Spirit are to be our Helper, Comfort, Counselor, Guide, Advocate, Standby and Intercessor. As you can see, His purposes are all friendly attributes. He is not a wicked Spirit but a gentle Person. So, how can He be a weapon of vengeance on our fellow humans? Jesus is our example. He never used Holy Ghost fire against the Pharisees and Sadducees who were His enemies as we may suppose. Jesus never used any kind of fire to pray or cast out demons and evil spirit. Jesus taught us to love and pray for (not against) our enemies. The greatest weapon that Jesus gave us is His name, Jesus. The name Jesus is sufficient to handle any challenge that may likely come your way. Take advantage of the name “Jesus” in your prayers. The name is ever powerful and relevant. “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord (Jesus; not Holy Ghost Fire) shall be saved.” Romans 10:13. http://gavinaleoghoworld..com/2016/04/the-myth-call-holy-ghost-fire.html#.XL4TpjBKiM8 |
The Dignity of Labour vs. the Concept of Favour By Gavin Aleogho Lately, I had a meeting with some Christian youths where I asked how many of them love “labour”. Only two hands went up. But when I asked how many of them love “favour”, every hands went up. I understood why they took that stand. This is because of the emphasis on “favour” and the misconception of the word “labour” in our Churches today, while relegating the dignity of labour. If you have a misconception of these two words, you will be waiting for God to make things happen for you while your counterparts and competitors who are unbelievers, would be working their way to success. That would only confirm the proverb of our Lord Jesus Christ when he said that; “for the children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light.” Luke 16:8b. http://gavinaleoghoworld..com/2018/07/the-dignity-of-labour-vs-concept-of.html#.XL05CjBKiM8 The concept of favour does not negate the concept of labour; this is one truth you need to accept. You need to work. You have to be diligent in what you do; this is what will open the door of favour for you to stand before kings and great men. For the Scripture says; “Seest thou a man diligent (industrious) in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men.” Proverbs 22:29. The concept of favour Never forget that we are living in a world that runs on laws and principles and not by magic or luck. Just because you are a Christian doesn’t automatically mean that you will enjoy favour when you lack good morals or you are lackadaisical about your responsibilities. Favour is not free. Favour comes after you have done the best; through diligent in whatever you are doing. You enjoy favour from your costumer when you are good at what you do. Favour does not come by confession alone, but by diligence and by following the principles of life. One of such principles that guarantee favour is showing kindness and courteous. This will make people to love you back and show you favour where necessary. To confirm this Proverbs 3:3-4 reads; “Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart: So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.” I don’t just believe in favour, I love favour and I do experience favour. However, maturity has taught me that favour is not free. There are conditions that put you in the place of favour and one of which is being industrious at what you do. I don’t enjoy favour just because I am Gavin. No! It came, either directly or indirectly because of the input or impact I have made to a persons or a system. You too can agree with me that every favour you have ever enjoyed came as a result of a seed you have sown which might be seed of kindness or labour. The concept of labour On the other hand, labour is not a sinful act neither is it a bad word, as some suppose. Labour is not a result of the fallen nature. Actually, work was instituted by God even before the fall of man (Genesis chapter 1 & 2). The fall of man only made the nature of work to be more difficult. So, the call to labour is not a call to frustration but a call to be co-creator with God. Every student that has ever succeeded in his or her academics will attest to the fact that they had to labour hard in their studies to achieve the feet they got. Without corresponding hard work, success is not guarantee. It is when you’ve put in the required effort that God comes in to bless the work of your hand, thereby making you to experience favour before men. Labour is what makes a man. The end result of any venture is not actually what makes a man but rather the process that he went through to achieve that result. Completion of the process of preparation is what opens the doors of favour and opportunity. Esther had to go through the rigorous process of preparation and purification before she got the favour of the King Ahasuerus. Cutting corners in the name of walking in favour is not good for anyone. Paul made it clearly that he laboured more than all the apostles. 1 Corinthians 15:10 reads; “But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace (favour) which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace (favour) of God which was with me.” The results of his labour are shown in the book of Acts and his letters are all as a result of his industriousness. For those that suggest that Believers shouldn’t labour, they should understand that the word labour appeared more than 87 times in the Bible. Few of which are: “…wealth from hard work grows over time. Proverbs 13:11b NLT “Hard work always pays off;” Proverbs 14:23a MSG “The desire of the slothful killeth him; for his hands refuse to labour. Proverbs 21:25 “There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God.” Ecclesiastics 2:24. “Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.” Ephesians 4:28. “For ye remember, brethren, our labour and travail: for labouring night and day, because we would not be chargeable unto any of you, we preached unto you the gospel of God.” 1 Thessalonians 2:9 “And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you; And to esteem them very highly in love for their work's sake. And be at peace among yourselves.” 1 Thessalonians 5:12-13. “Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.” Hebrews 4:11. All the above Scriptures are pointers to the fact that we should be hardworking and serious with whatever we are doing if we must become successful in our endeavour. Jesus Christ understood the concept of labour that is why He prayed the Father to send in more labourers. Matthew 9:37 “Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers (not people that are only depending on favour) into his harvest.” God is not a respecter of persons. God only respects the laws and principles He has put in place to govern the earth. That is why the Scripture speaking about God, reads; “for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.” An unbeliever who labours hard in his course would succeed more than a Christian that is lazing around; but only expecting favour. We should stop lazing around with the wrong mindset that we are not expected to labour hard. For you to succeed and enjoy favour in whatever you are doing, you must of necessity work hard and become the best in it. Let’s become industrious in whatever we have decided to do in life. http://gavinaleoghoworld..com/2018/07/the-dignity-of-labour-vs-concept-of.html#.XL05CjBKiM8 |
