MadCow1: Ask the KKK and the LRA the damage the Bible can do.The matter of discussion is not mere argument or a display or an abuse of intellect. Rather, it is pointing out what is wrong. Scarcism could then be a way to dodge the truth. Because it is recess, would you support banning the reading any other literature(prose/drama/poetry)? We all are free moral agents, your choice is your choice but others also have their choices. |
myspnigeria: Religion is the opium of the massesQuoting Karl Marx? Have you asked how he ended his life? Opium? No, not at all. Unfortunately, there is the perversion of the truth everywhere and that creates an appearance that supports your view but the the truth is true religion is connecting with the Maker, the Owner of the Master Plan and finding purpose for living. All life's experiences are a product of a chain of decisions, actions and reactions. We decide our future by our actions and inaction today, our utterances and silence, and omission or commission. The Scriptures can not be broken. |
MadCow1: Same reason why you cant shoot guns in the school yard during recess. No correlation. Let's leave out biases. We know the damage the gun can do. Can the bible do the same? |
MadCow1: I wish they would.MadCow1, I have taken time to read the quoted case between Abington School District vs Schempp. I think you have misapplied the context and ruling here. The spirit of the ruling was actually to protect the right of individuals to practise chosen religion and to separate the State from Religion. Schempp family were also christians only that there was a conflict in doctrine and sought through the court to preserve their values. The favorable ruling at the District court was upheld by the Supreme court. Going by precedents therefore, the child could not have been banished from school for reading the bible. The punishment is tantamount to an act of denial which law court ruling would not approve. Please read Wikipedia source for clarity(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abington_School_District_v._Schempp) |
antartica: Children go to school to learn to be objective and rational, not to be mentally deformed and deluded with ancient books like bible or quoran that has no basis for human existence in the 21st century world.Your position is totally incorrect and I think you contradict yourself. Learning is broad and not confined to curricula. That is why people read history, study science, gather general knowledge and continue reading even after school life. Your view is biased and it is largely influenced by your believing in nothing. That you are not convinced does not mean everyone should follow your line of thought. Even Mao Tse Sung talked about letting many flowers bloom; meaning you tolerate in spite of differences. No one can force you to believe anything but you can exercise caution in how you project your opinion. Civility is not judged by verbose language but respect for others despite obvious disagreement. Majority acts or views are not necessary right. I believe the Holy Bible transverse time and space. Really, the issue here is: should the child be expelled for reading and seeking knowledge the bible? My view is NO. |
Mynd44: If this is not his first warning, he should have obeyed or atleast found another school.I am surprised at your comment for an obvious reason. US is a country founded on the tenets of liberty; freedom self expression, freedom of association among other things. The bible is not a porn or some kind of forbidden books. Looking beyond religion and focusing on logic, was the reading of the book to himself in any way to hurt or endanger any of the other students? No. "Juju" is not a book. It is not read but a physical object that may somewhat be scary to some. That bible reading in itself could not have been taken as act of religion. Besides, this was done during school recess. The fact of the impropriety of the conduct and policy of the school is contained in their glossing over what specific policy of the school breached was. I think that we live in an age where more and more people get too comfortable to forget their Maker. For as long as the child did not constitute a nuisance to anyone, I am of the opinion that the school was way out of line to have suspended the child and will lose the battle in the court of competent jurisdiction. |
Dear contributor, Zboyd, I have read your write-up with great concerns. I am really not in a position to judge or castigate your view because I know you have your own thought process and values which may diverge from those of many on Nairaland, including myself. I will attempt to answer some and not all of your questions that I consider important. This is because all the questions point to the crux of your writing - Submission. First and foremost, the necessity for submission is because it is a command from the Almighty, your Maker. To challenge that position may suggest that you think you are of a superior intelligence which I seriously doubt. If you are an atheist, I will understand. Again, submission requested is not exactly the same as subordination. Besides, the same scriptures admonished "submitting one to another". This alludes to the fact of submission not being one-way. It suggests mutual respect and each knowing his/her place. The foundation of any marital union is love, and it is premised on the requirement of mutual respect and agreement. Dropping the woman's surname for instance is part of the submission, combining surnames comes from an agreement. Therefore, peace of mind in the union is attainable with submission. Why would you want to be united with a man you do not wish to submit to? This may be folly and self-inflicted pain. History is replete with women who honored their husbands and enjoyed their marriages. If your experience is not sweet in this regard, you may be one out of many. Success in academics, careers or business does not grant any right to usurp a man's role. It is only in the interest of lasting peace to ensure that such accomplishments do not stand in the way of enjoying marriage. There are cases of very successful women who feel void because they realised late the importance of submission. I do not intend to make a case for bullies or lazy men without any modicum of dignity. The benefits therefore are a total package of a happy home, peace of mind, deserved love and affection, support from your spouse, fulfilled dreams and well spent life. Saying this much, I want you to ponder and reconsider your position. Take surveys, observe and review history and you will realise that submision is not peculiar to the black race. It does not suggest it is the man's world. It is for all and what you see is what you get. |
