Meet Nigeria’s First Lady Mechanic Sandra Aguegbor, Fixing Cars For 32yrs And Running Her Own Garage For 22yrs.
Sandra Aguebor-Ekperuoh is the first female mechanic in Nigeria. She is sharing her skills with other women through the Lady Mechanic Initiative. This organization trains women who are often former sex workers, orphans, or victims of human trafficking. It has built a strong network of female mechanics across cities in Nigeria. The initiative has recently spread to the north in Kano City. Aguebor-Ekperuoh said that so far, the response has been positive – “Our clients keep coming back – they prefer us because we are determined to be better than a lot of mechanics who take their job and their salary for granted.”
A rough start
Aguebor-Ekperuoh grew up in Benin City. She has loved working with cars since she was 14. Her peers would make fun of her when she changed into her mechanic’s clothes after class. At first, her mother was not supportive of her ambitions, sometimes even beating her if she caught her working with an engine instead of doing her chores. Both of her parents pushed her to consider a different career, but she had already made her decision. Aguebor-Ekperuoh started saving money by helping women on the side of the roads. She then worked until she could open her own garage. She struggled with opening her first automobile workshop in Lagos in 1995.
“The constraints, the obstacles, the challenges that could have driven me back, they became my opportunity. The future looks bright,” she said.
An opportunity
Aguebor-Ekperuoh saw an opportunity to help her fellow Nigerian women. While educated women have made progress entering the labor force, women without a higher education – the majority of the population – have trouble finding work. There are very few opportunities for women to receive training and apprenticeships for blue-collar jobs, such as carpentry, car servicing, and plumbing.
“These problems persist and are compounded by the perception that women’s work is not as valuable as men’s work,” Ashoka.org said.
And if these gender roles keep being reinforced, it affects the next generation.
“As Nigerian girls grow up, they will define their career aspirations by what they see achieved by their mothers’ generation.”
In 2004, Aguebor-Ekperuoh received a grant and launched her nonprofit: the Lady Mechanic Initiative.
Spreading like wildfire
Since it was founded, the initiative has trained hundreds of women to become mechanics. Aguebor-Ekperuoh described her approach as “teaching other women how to fish” to make sure they can find skilled, well-paying jobs as mechanics. This allows them to become self-sufficient. Aguebor-Ekperuoh said that at first, people were dismissive, expecting the initiative to fade away with time.

“But, right now, we are solid. I have been able to empower about 300 female mechanics in Nigeria,” she said. “I will say to you that there is no automobile company in Nigeria that does not have female mechanics, and they got all these girls from me. So it’s spreading out like a wildfire, gradually, and also empowering other women. And we don’t intend to even stop in Nigeria,” she added.

The graduates have reported success after the program. 24-year-old Rebecca Egoche had been a prostitute since she was a teenager. One day, she saw Aguebor-Ekperuoh speaking about her program on television.
“I just saw this woman talking about her business with all this strength. She was her own person. And I knew I wanted to be just like her,” she remembered.

Egoche’s life has been transformed.

“This is a man’s job in Nigeria, so I like surprising them. I like making them say, ‘Wow.’”

THE European Union has finally waded into Nnmadi Kanu's case and called for his release and along with other pro-Biafran agitators being held in Nigerian jail.
This followed Julie Ward speech at the European Union Parliament in Bruxxels , Belgium. The Member of Parliament for NW of England made the call for his release and an immediate end to all form of violence against Nnamdi Kanu's supporters.

Kanu was apprehended by security operatives in October, 2015 and has been in detention since then. The MEP noted that in spite of court orders asking for his release, Kanu has still been detained.
She said: “Since October 2015, Nnamdi Kanu, a British-Nigerian citizen and leader of the Indigenous People Of Biafra has been unlawfully imprisoned by Nigeria’s Department of State Services despite the fact that all criminal charges against him were dropped and the court order has been issued for him to be released on bail. Chapter 4 section 39 of the Nigerian constitution says that every person every person shall be entitled to freedom of expression including freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impact ideas and information without interference.” Ward called on President Muhammadu Buhari to release Kanu and also stop the violence again Biafra people.
“I therefore call upon the president of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari to uphold his country’s constitution, to ensure Nnamdi Kanu’s immediate and safe release as well as his co-defendant, Benjamin Madubgwu and James Nwawuisi.
“The Nigerian government must guarantee the freedom of expression of all Nigerian citizens including their right to protest without intimidation and end violence towards those who identify as Biafrans. “And I call on my colleagues here in the European Parliament to do much more to promote human rights in Nigeria.”

GP Cyprian Okoro, 55, was lucky not to have been jailed over his library of obscene videos sent to him via WhatsApp which “betrayed” his profession, a judge said.

According to Standard news, the sick clips included women having sex with dogs, a woman having sex with a horse and a man having sex with a snake, the court heard.
Okoro, also had an indecent video of a two-year-old boy, which among images moved to a password-protected “vault” app on his phone.
The defendant denied five charges of possessing extreme pornography and one of possessing an indecent image of a child but was found guilty at the Old Bailey of all but two extreme pornography charges.
Following the verdict, the jury was told that it was the second time Okoro had been convicted in what the judge described as a "quite unusual case".
The Court of Appeal ordered a retrial after he was sentenced to nine months' jail suspended for 18 months at Norwich Crown Court in 2014.
He had also been ordered to sign the sex offenders' register for 10 years, complete an internet sex offenders' programme, do 200 hours of unpaid work and be subject to 18 months of supervision.
The court also heard how in April 2000, Okoro was found guilty by a General Medical Council panel of serious professional misconduct relating to "inappropriate comments of a sexual nature" at work.
He was suspended for 18 months, extended for a further 12 months in 2001, the court was told.
Okoro came to the attention of police after a woman made an allegation of sexual assault against him, but no further action was taken over the claim.
In mitigation, Stephen Akinsanya said it was "regrettable" that such a man had lost his good character and possibly his career.
He told the court: "His biggest regret is he did not delete the material the moment it arrived and did not seek to cut off the ties with those who sent the material to him."
Mr Akinsanya said it was through "reckless stupidity" he had risked his whole career and it was unlikely Okoro would be able to work in the UK again.

He said the GP had been "traumatised" by the stigma attached to his conviction but insisted he was not a paedophile.
He had never posed a danger to his own children or those he interacted with through his work, the court heard.
Sentencing, Judge Richard Hone QC told Okoro: "You have betrayed the high standards of conduct required by your profession."
The judge said he had to allow for the fact the defendant had completed the unpaid work, supervision requirement and most of the sex offenders' programme.
Although he was "constrained" by the earlier sentence, he echoed the appeal court judge by saying Okoro had been "fortunate" he had not been sent immediately to prison before.
Okoro qualified as a doctor in Lagos, Nigeria, in 1986, and received an interim suspension by the General Medical Council in September 2013.
