Members of the House of Representatives have expressed displeasure after the lawmakers could not take delivery of exotic cars worth about N6.1 billion as official vehicles for the 360-member House.

Every four years, lawmakers get exotic official vehicles, better known as “utility or committee” cars.

About 223 of the 360 members of the house were “freshers” who first came to the National Assembly in 2015.

In the days preceding the annual recess of the members on Thursday last week, the members had begun to demand explanations from the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara.

However, the blame was placed more on the Chairman, Committee on House Services, Nasiru Baballe-Ila, than on Dogara, for the former’s alleged role in delaying the delivery of the cars.

Punch reports that the House had contracted Peugeot Automobile Nigeria Limited to supply 360 units of Peugeot 508 series late in 2015.

The company is allegedly supplying each unit of the exotic vehicle at N17 million, leaving the House with a budget of N6.1 billion.

An official stated, “Right from when this arrangement started, there was an undertaking that the cars would be supplied in batches.

Morocco will meet next month’s deadline to bid to host the 2026 World Cup, says CAF official Amaju Pinnick.

Interested countries have until August 11 to submit their bids, with the USA, Canada and Mexico having already expressed an interest.

“I’ve been told Morocco wants to put in its bid and CAF will support them 100 per cent,” Pinnick told BBC Sport.

“I’d be surprised (if Morocco does not put in a bid), but I think they will.”

The North African nation failed in four previous World Cup bids – in 1994, 1998, 2006 and 2010.

The 2010 tournament was hosted by South Africa as the continent staged the World Cup for first and only time in its history.

FIFA’s rotational hosting policy means Africa is one of four confederations that can bid for the 2026 finals as Europe (Russia 2018) and Asia (Qatar 2022) cannot be considered.

A mother, Monsurat Ayinde , who allegedly recruited some thugs to beat her child’s teachers in a secondary school, was on Monday charged before an Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Adeola Adelaja , however, released her on bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.
Ayinde, 40, whose address was not provided, is facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, assault and breach of peace.
She, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

It was all sorrow and blood as no fewer than ten passengers were reportedly killed in a motoring accident on Sunday somewhere at Ille-Ife, Osun State, South-West Nigeria.

No fewer than 700 suspected cultists and 38 suspected armed robbers were arrested in different parts of Anambra in the last three weeks, Garba Umar, the state commissioner of police, has said. Umar told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday, July 23 in Awka that the arrests were clear signal that Anambra was no longer a safe haven for criminals. “This number of arrests within three weeks to me was unprecedented and we will sustain the tempo until we flush out all the bad eggs in the state,’’ he said. At least 700 suspected cultists and 38 suspected armed robbers were arrested in different parts of Anambra in the last three weeks, Garba Umar, the state Commissioner of Police, has said.

Mr. Umar told the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday in Awka that the arrests were clear signal that Anambra was no longer a safe haven for criminals.

“This number of arrests within three weeks to me was unprecedented and we will sustain the tempo until we flush out all the bad eggs in the state,” he said.

He said that the police recovered several types of arms and ammunition from the suspects.

The commissioner said that some of the suspects had been arraigned, while the command was still investigating cases levelled against others.

He said that additional personnel had been deployed in Anambra by the Inspector-General to beef up the existing security in the state.

Mr. Umar said that the command had created 20 new units and deployed its personnel to various flash points across the state.

“I personally patrol some of these locations to ensure efficient operations. I am not an arm chair police commissioner.

“I move round myself to make sure that things are done the right way for security of lives and property of residents,” Mr. Umar said.

He warned those who were in the habit of operating in offices and residential houses, especially around the Government House, Awka axis, to desist.

He said that the command had set its dragnet in every location in the state; especially Awka, the capital, and that any person or group caught would be severely dealt with.

On extortion of money and other corrupt conducts by police officers, Umar warned them to shun such negative conduct, adding that corruption was viewed as a serious offence.

“I have read my riot acts to officers and men in Anambra State Police Command that under this administration of the present IG, there is zero tolerance to corruption.

“No police personnel can extort money from an individual or group and go free.

“We have the mechanism to checkmate the activities of our men; both the Inspector General and Commissioner of Police monitoring units are working hard.

“We gave out our telephone numbers to the public to report any case of extortion and act of incivility and misconduct to us.”

The commissioner also advised the people of the state to disregard threats by any group that the forthcoming Nov. 18 governorship election in Anambra would not hold.

“We learnt that there are some disgruntled elements making some pronouncements against the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria that people should boycott the Nov.18 governorship election in the state.

“The group can say whatever they like, but the police and other security agents have a duty to secure the nation and as well ensure that the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is protected.
