"Mom! Don't come in the shower when I am in here." " Dad, I'm too old for hats and balloons on my birthday." " Mom, I can walk to school. You don't need to drive me anymore." These are just some of the things children say to us as they grow older. What they are really telling us, beneath the spoken words, is that the family is facing new changes -- changes that will require all members to accommodate if the families are to stay healthy. Change happens every day Changes come in all types. There are the common, typical changes that every family must go through. They are common because time and its passing is common to us all. You wouldn't let your two-year-old play outside unsupervised but at six you might. You wouldn't let your six-year-old walk to the mall but you might let your sixteen-year-old. These changes related to kids’ growing up are developmentally healthy and for the most part, are handled well by families. More important (but still common) changes occur when a family member takes on a new role. These changes include promotions or a job change; a man or woman’s becoming a spouse; a spouse’s becoming a parent; or a parent’s becoming a grandparent. Difficult changes Time waits for no one and ignores no one. We are all swept along with the changes it brings. When the change is normal, the winds of change are like a gentle breeze. But change can also bring dark, unpleasant storms of change. These storms can rip a family apart. Spouses can become single parents. Grandparents can parent again (if they take on the chore of raising their grandchildren). Children may find themselves parentless or become parents while still children themselves (as in the case of teen pregnancies). Whether your family is flowing with the standard currents of change or suffering the ravages of a tempest, here are some general principles for family survival. Expect change As we have already mentioned, change is normal. Why are you so surprised that your child doesn't want you coming into the shower when he is in there? Although parents know this time will come, they live in denial. They want to believe that he will always be a little boy. They talk of the good times when little Johnny needed help taking a bath or would run naked around the house when he was only 2 (to the embarrassment of Johnny). What growing child wants his parents to box him in with words and stories of the past when the future is calling? Fortunately for parents, teens are rebellious. Rebellion can be a signal to parents that change is blowing and the child, not the parents, is moving with it. The trouble is that teens speak their mind, instead of speaking up, about their wants and needs. This gives them a reputation of defiance and opposition. What if it is really the parents who are rebellious as they defy time and oppose change? Perhaps the child is the submissive one, giving himself or herself over to the movements of time while the parent is stuck in the mud of denial. Take one step at a time It would be nice if our families were like the families seen on television. Television families experience a problem and its solution in under an hour. In real life, it takes a little longer. But change can take place in small steps that lead to solutions quickly, without the television drama. The first step is to watch for the signals of change. They will occur in the emotional interactions between family members. Okay, they may be more like sparks than signals, but they are clear indicators that members must do something new. The next step is to communicate. Parents tire of trite suggestions like "communicate with your child." But they are our safe islands when stormy winds of change blow. Falling back on the tried and true (and trite) suggestion of communicating is what gets us safely through the tough times. Communicating means to listen to your child when he tells you he can walk to school on his own. It means to speak up and tell your child that you hear his need for independence. The more a child appears "rebellious," the more a parent needs to listen. This will allow a real dialogue to occur between parent and child, where family members speak up and listen to each other interchangeably. Get help Families don't need to go through changes, normal or stormy, without some help. Help can come from within the family or from without. Mom can ask Dad for advice, and Dad can look to Mom for support. Family meetings can resolve issues much quicker than endless power struggles. Consult with extended family members, who have seen storms come and go. If family members are unable, unwilling or unavailable for help, go to outside resources. Every community has agencies that help families. Find out who those agencies are and ask for help. "Waiting out the storm" may leave families devastated. Change is stressful, and support is its buffer. Relatives, friends and professionals shelter families from the storms of change. It is much easier to deal with a cranky child when there is someone to talk to or take over. Family therapy is much cheaper than paying divorce lawyers. Asking the local church or synagogue for help is less invasive than calling the police to deal with domestic violence or out-of-control children. Reinforce the foundations In order for a home to withstand the winds of change, it will require a firm foundation. The foundation in the family is the parents. A weak foundation will crumble under the stress of change. A solid foundation will be keep a home intact, although shaken and showing some wear and tear -- but it will stand. Parents must take a stand together. More importantly, they must take time together. Remember what it was like before children? Parents enjoyed one another. They spent time together. They knew and desired to know more about one another. Then the blessed event occurs -- baby! Life suddenly changes the family -- both its quantity and its quality -- for better and worse. Add more children, a few bills, and a chaotic routine of work and family life and you have a foundation of marriage that is bound to suffer. Entropy (nature's word for change over time) takes place. In marriage it has been called boredom, lack of interest or personality differences. The solution is to pay some attention to the relationship -- a little repairing of the foundation, a little pairing up as a couple. If time and change can wear a relationship down, time and change (with a conscious blueprint) can build it up again. Make room That brings parents to the next principle: making room for a child in the family. Making room refers to a having a new or next child, as well as making room for the child to grow and stretch his or her wings. Families with new babies will need to establish new roles. Parents will have to learn the art, the battle, the teamwork of sharing the leadership roles and daily responsibilities. Families with older children will need to work cooperatively to avoid the old "divide and conquer" routine older children love so much. Parents still need to exercise their leadership role but now must weather the frightening process of making room for the teenager to operate in and out of the family. A shifting of identity will take place as the child gets older, for both the parents and the child. The parent will not be needed by the older child (or so it will seem). The child will seek out his or her own way in life out from under the protection of the home. Refocus your life As children become adults, parents must refocus their life on themselves, careers, marriage, aging parents and their own aging. We call this the empty nest. Momma and poppa birds just have each other now. They can retreat from one another, squawking their loss across the painful, empty spaces in the nest and in their hearts. Marriage partners may look at each other as birds of another feather after so many years tending the nest and the children. They may have lost the old dreams in the busyness -- and the business -- of life. Hidden resentments and hurts will come up if they have not been dealt with before simply because now there is space for them to come up. Or a new focus can take place where new roles and emphases are created or rediscovered. They can fly off on new adventures together outside the nest. Flying means coasting on the winds of change, and it will involve the risk of a storm or two along the way. These storms may include the caring for and death of their own parents, the grandparents. It may mean a loss of work and physical health themselves. It may mean playing the new role as the grandparent bird as new changelings hatch and grow. A new way to see your kids Parents must look at children as equals. Children are now adults with families of their own. The old roles as caretaker are modified into supporters and consultants on family life for the next generation. This is the time to read the patterns on the horizon, to study the weather of change and pass the information on to the next generation so they can cope with the winds of change in their families. So when your child tells you they don't need your help or they are embarrassed to be seen with you in front of their friends, smile and let the winds of change blow through your hair. If the storms of change pummel you with hail and lightening, seek cover in your family sanctuary, snuggle into the nest and know that it is just life reminding you that change is needed. Or if the nest is empty, look on the horizon to where you will fly to next, not at the worn, familiar spaces of the nest. Tomorrow the sun will shine and the winds of change will blow on |

In the forty-four years of Nigeria as a nation, the dominant political system has not been democracy. Owing to various reasons and failures on the part of all stakeholders in the Nigerian project, attempts at enthroning and sustaining democratic political system in the country have only lasted for short periods of time. Towards the end of the 1990s, internal dynamics and international pressure and persuasion combined to push Nigeria again towards the embrace of a political system that is based on the global principles of democracy. That attempt initiated in May 1999 was again renewed through the democratic process of electioneering in May 2003. It is gladdening to say that following the 2003 elections Nigeria is still operating a democratic political system today. However, there are questions and challenges, central among which is the challenge to sustain and maintain democracy and turn it into a culture and way of life acceptable and workable for the largest majority of our people. This involves managing internal tendencies, especially security issues and problems that could impinge on the survival of democracy. This is a matter of national importance that should be of concern to all stakeholders in the Nigerian state and one that requires comprehensive and committed contribution of all groups and interests that make up Nigeria. In addressing the challenge to the survival of democracy in Nigeria, it is pertinent to consider security issues and problems that have affected or capable of affecting the attitude, confidence and cooperation of all groups and segments that make up the Nigerian federation. It is also necessary to explore the gaps and gray areas in the national constitution that are responsible for various problems and crises and how these gaps can be addressed. Some of the major security problems currently confronting the nation have been identified to include: political and electioneering conflicts, socio-economic agitations, ethno-religious crises, ethnic militias, boundary disputes, cultism, criminality and organised crimes. These problems individually and collectively constitute threats to the peace, security and development of the country. Invariably, they have implications for the continuity and survival of the nation's nascent democracy. On the other hand we also need to explore how democracy can itself be deliberately constructed as a positive response to these problems. For the better part of the forty-four years of Nigeria as a nation, the country was under military administration resulting from military takeover of the democratic and constitutional structures of the state. The military takeovers are security breaches resulting from a wide range of reasons, sometimes a culmination of a number of security and political developments. The security, political and sometimes socio-economic developments are security concerns that were not addressed or managed by the existing state structure at the time. Apart from military coups there are other security issues that have challenged, and indeed, rattled the democratic political system. Among them, is civil or organised rebellion resulting from a number of socio-political developments including ethnic disagreements and national resource contentions. The Nigerian civil war is an example of such security breakdown resulting from failure to manage ethnic and social problems. Recent international debates have also raised the need to see security in the broader sense as the struggle to secure the most basic necessities of life: food, fuel, medicine and shelter. This broader human security is important for the attainment of physical and national security and overall peace and development as social unrests arising from the absence of such basic human security can indeed lead to security problems and conflicts. This position is attested to by recent social unrests in various African countries that have roots in the failure of government policies to provide or manage the basic human needs of their citizens. In recent times and especially since the commencement of the present political dispensation, Nigeria has witnessed increasing number of security problems and developments that constitute threats to the maintenance and survival of its democratic political system. These security concerns are diverse and complex, ranging from political disagreements to criminal activities with alarming dimensions and consequences. It is an established fact that democracy in its essence implies the interplay of various interests and shades of opinions in the mode of political parties and pressure groups. This interplay must be undertaken in an open, free and fair atmosphere with adherence to such fundamental principles like tolerance, freedom of expression and freedom of choice. Unfortunately, the activities and conducts of past and present participants in the Nigerian democratic space have failed to adhere to these key principles. Desperate, intolerant and ruthless contests among political parties, political leaders and their followers have often resulted in violence, security breaches, killings and destruction which threaten the very democracy that they seek to partake in. It can be recalled that violent and desperate politicking among political parties was the cause of the problem in the Western Region in 1965 that set in motion developments leading to the unravelling of the First Republic. Electoral fraud poses a major challenge to democracy in Nigeria and by implication, poses threat to the security of the nation. Electoral fraud desecrates the sanctity of democracy and weakens its capacity as an instrument for the mobilisation of national, human and material resources for the development of the people and the state. And in an environment where development is security, and security is development, the consequences of such acts catch up very quickly with the system. One area in which electoral fraud in Nigeria manifests in an alarming manner is the area of voter registration. Voters are the ammunitions of elections and contestants win by amassing as many as possible. In a game where fraud is systemic, the strength and competence of the "referee" questionable, the dubious accumulation of the essential arms of the war is only natural. As Sunday Ochoche noted: The extent to which this dimension can influence the outcome of an election must not be underestimated. From the 1991 governorship elections-- In Akwa Ibom State, the number of registered voters was 3,895,623 but according to the provisional figures of the 1991 census, the State had a total population (including children) of 2,359,736 and eligible voters of only 1,061,881. That means that the State had 2,176,824 (137%) excess voters-- Similarly, Imo State,- had a total population of 2,485,499 out of which 1,118,474 were eligible to vote. And yet the State had 2,541,962 registered for the 1991 elections, an over-registration of 1,423,488 (or 102%). In-fact nationwide, there was a total of 24,448,488 excess votes. Indeed, as Ochoche went on to painfully point out, if it is noted that in the 1993 aborted Presidential elections, the total number of votes cast was about 14 million, then we can see that if a group effectively hijacks the voter registration system, it is possible to get enough "voters" and win an election without any person actually voting for the person. This type of situation undermines the integrity and credibility of the democratic process and makes governance much more difficult. It generates resistance from those who believe they have been cheated out. The anger and frustration is worsened when there is no proper and just means of seeking redress. People will resort to violence. We experienced that in the Western Region in the First Republic. In recent times, especially during the present democratic dispensation, traits of similar intolerant and ruthless contest for political office have manifested. In addition, the use of illegal arms and weapons by political party contestants and their supporters has assumed very alarming dimension. Some states of the federation are presently experiencing various security breaches and violence involving groups that were allegedly armed by political party contestants during the 2003 elections. Therefore, in order to grow and sustain democracy in Nigeria, it is important that political players and institutions embrace the principles of true democracy and allow open, free and fair competition, which are essential in the process of aggregation of national opinions and development choices. There is the need to evolve relevant constitutional and legislative mechanisms to address areas and issues that will promote open, free and fair competition among political parties. The culture of tolerance and equity should also form part of political education targeted at political leaders as well as the entire citizenry. Nigeria is a political unit made up of over two hundred ethnic and diverse religious groups. The consent and cooperation of these ethnic nationalities and religious groups is important to the existence and continuity of Nigeria as a nation. Unity and peaceful cooperation among these groups is even more important as frequent crises and violence among these groups will lead to divisive politics and loss of confidence in the system that will hurt the progress of the nation and indeed affect the consolidation of our democracy. There have been several ethno-religious conflicts in the history of Nigeria, but in recent times, these problems appear to be escalating at an intolerable scale. Ethnic and the foregoing problems and criminal activities individually and collectively create insecurity and breach of the peace that are likely to or indeed affect legitimate social and economic activities in the country. These problems also have the very damaging consequence of giving the signal to the rest of the international community that Nigeria is not a safe and secure place and as such not suitable for economic investment and activities. This is particularly important in view of the efforts being made to create the desired atmosphere to attract foreign investment. Beyond the effects of security concerns on the economic fortunes of the country, the nature of the security challenges facing the country also have implications for the country's political system. As mentioned earlier, social cohesion among various groups and interests is important in the process of national political development. Therefore, the constituent parts of the country must be and indeed feel that they are being carried along in the process of national governance. Experience has shown that widespread discontent and loss of confidence in the system have ways of affecting national political stability. Invariably continuing escalation of violence and crises across the country will impinge on the survival of our democracy. Accordingly, there is the challenge to rethink and improve on policy and institutional means of dealing with security concerns arising in the country. At the political level, the federal, state and local governments should evolve programmes of cultural and political education and orientation that seek to enthrone the fundamentals of democracy so that the political contestants as well as the generality of the citizens imbibe principles and practices essential for sustainable democracy. Such programmes must also address specific tendencies that create security breach and concerns in the country. In addition, a process of legislative and constitutional review should be initiated to assess the country's constitution and amend or expunge as necessary areas that have been found to give rise to conflicts and security problems. The process should also introduce new provisions and legislations that will ensure better and more effective interplay of interests among all groups and stakeholders in Nigeria. Such exercise should also embrace ways of making the country's democratic space more open, free, fair and tolerant as exists in other democracies around the world. Among specific lingering political issues that should be addressed are: the laws relating to political parties and their activities; the establishment, funding and activities of the electoral body; local and state government relationship; allocation of national resources and revenue; citizenship rights; devolution of security powers to states and local governments. In addition, the legislative and constitutional review should also embody security sector reforms that will make the security agencies and institutions more effective in combating crimes and other threats to national security and make them accountable to the democratic political system and structures. These democratic structures include the states and local governments. I believe that we need to give a more concrete understanding to the definition of governors as the chief security officers of the state. Democracy is a sought-after value. It is not a perfect system of governance, even conceptually. But as Aristotle argued, it is the least evil of all possible governments. The strength of democracy is drawn from the fact that it is supposed to be the product of the will of the majority of the people. Government is held in trust for the people. The citizens feel a sense of ownership of the state for they can identify with it as vital stakeholders whose will gave existence and legitimacy to the state and the government. As shareholders of the common-wealth, the citizens will not only avoid such behaviours that hurt and sabotage the system, but join forces to resist any such attack on the collective interest. That in-fact is the real basis for the development of grand strategy, the mobilisation of the entire national asset for the protection of the nation, which I believe can work best in a democracy. Meanwhile, because of the opening up of the political space and its encouragement of competition in an environment where the institutions for the management and regulation of the competition are weak, the tendency for competition to escalate to violent conflict is high. There appear to be disequilibrium between the demands for the benefit of democracy and our capacity to respond individually and institutionally to these demands. Given our experience and where we are coming from, I agree that we can do better, but how much better can we realistically expect to perform? We have a vast array of persons, groups, and institutions that for long were schooled in a particular way, and have never known any other way of doing things than the non-accountable, non-democratic, and non-people friendly style. We as a nation are in a major transition, a major journey away from a past we cannot ignore, to a future that must be better. Along the way, there will be frustrations caused by perceived sluggishness of the pace of the journey. There will be resistance from those who benefited from the old order and for whom the new means loss and reduction to irrelevance. The demand of moving such monumental bureaucracy and people from the state of inertia forward could cause so much pain that for some they might even prefer returning to the old order. Democracy cannot come easy. We must be driven by the comfort that what lies ahead is good. We must also admit to ourselves that this is a journey in which there is no point of arrival, but each step we take, takes us to a better and more secured ground. There is a challenge before us and I am confident that we will not be found wanting both in the means by which we confront it and in the certainty that at every stage we can be assured that we are better today than yesterday, and tomorrow will still be better than today if we don't give up. |

Repairing A Corruptted MMC: Physically, memory cards are quite fragile pieces of high technology, susceptible to damage from various silly things like excessive heat, condensation, strong magnetic fields, physical damage from rough handling and/or bending! (similar to most electronic devices then, ) Given the natue of mobile memory card products, they are constantly being taken in and out of some form of interface with a mobile phone, a camera, a laptop, or desktop PC, or a separate memory card reader. The number of different devices they have to be able to interact with is in the thousands. It is not too surprisingly, then that sometimes the state of the file system on the memory card can get damaged. This may happen for a number of different reasons, including: * removing the card from a device whilst an application is trying to read/write to it, (Just be patient, ) * battery drain on a device whilst in use meaning an insufficent voltage failure whilst writing to the card. * a poor implementation of the MMC standard on the device using the card * poor connectivity software drivers on the device or the Windows PC/Mac * physical damage like card or device being dropped, bent, getting wet etc, As often as not, the problem is not terminal for your memory card, but just a software issue ( or in physical terms, it could be called "a temporary disalignment of the all the bits and bytes on the card" .The fix for this problem is the same as for any other file storage device (like a floppy or hard drive) with corrupt or invalid file system, namely; re-format the file system. Re-Formatting your MMC Card: It is possible that your mobile will offer you the option of formatting the memory card if it is found to be invalid. (However, the likes of Nokia nGage, Nokia 6600, and Siemens Sx1 often just prefer to reject the media as corrupted). In that case, to format the card, you will need access to one or more of the following: * A Windows PC or Mac. * A separate multi-format memory card reader (verify that it is compatible with the MultiMediaCard -MMC- standard). * (This can come in USB or PCMCIA flavours. If USB, try and ensutre it is a USB2 device. * Alternatively, many of the newest laptop and desktop PCs now come with integrated Multi-format memory card readers. * If you are using a separate memory card reader, then connect it up to your PC, and let windows recgnize the device through plug-and-play. Now you can insert your MobyMemory card into the appropriate slot in the memory card reader. (Please note that because the MMC card is pretty much symmetrical it is very easy to insert it upside-down in the slot). Open up [Windows Explorer] (or the equivalent for MAC users, sorry not well-versed in OS X). There should be at least one icon visible for a [Removable Drive] in the list of available drives. (in fact, there is often a list of about 5 or 6 Removable drives, one for each of the different Memory card formats that your reader is compatible with). Find the drive that is mapped to the MMC card by clicking on each in turn until it confirms there is a drive present. (Sometimes it is easiest to do this by trying a fully-functional MMC card in the MMC slot first so you can confirm which drive letter it is.) (NB. It will always be labelled as a [Removable Drive], don't mistake it for one of your PC hard drives like [C:] drive, as that could be catastrophic later on!) At this stage it may give an error message saying that the drive is unreadable. By right-clicking on the drive letter, it will provide the option of formatting the drive. Select format the drive, and the [Format Drive] dialog will appear (Double-check again to make sure it not your [C:] drive!). There is only one setting to focus on in this page, and that is to ensure that the FileSystem selected for formatting is the [FAT] option (not FAT32, or NTFS or any other option) (Note: All mobile phones, to my knowledge, and most cameras (etc, ) use the FAT file system (or at least are compatible with it) on their memory card media.) Now click on Format Now ( ensure [Quick Format] is not selected as this will not actually restore the file system space byte by byte, but only resets the header information so the drive thinks its empty again. This may not be enought to solve your corruption problem.) The PC will now - hopefully!- chug away happily until it has restored the memory card space back to its original configuration (of course, any information on there is long gone by now!). If you recieve an error message back from the [Format Now] request, then your problem may be more permanent, and not just a software issue. In this case, it may still respond to a format request in a different memory card reader or device. If you believe it to be a failure of manufacture, then the warranty on the card offers the prospect of a replacement card, subject to a confirmation of the fault upon return of the goods. Increase Your MMC Space Your files in MMC are stored in multiple (disk) blocks. So if you format using 16K block, the space used will be 16K eventhough your file is just 1K. If you buy MMC, it is usually preformatted with 16K block. Therefore alot of space is wasted as most installed program files are usually less than 2K. You will need a card reader to do this:- 1. Connect card reader and copy all your files in the MMC to computer disk. (Make sure you set the show all/hidden/os files to "on" ![]() 2. Do a format of the MMC using command line "format" and use the /A=size option. Alternative, you can use the Disk Management in Adminstrative Tools to format. Make sure you select FAT. For 256MB MMC, smallest block you can use is 4K, 128MB is 2K, 64Mb is 1K and 32MB is 512B. (Note: You cannot use the phone "format MMC" to do this as the format just clear the allocation table and does not change the block size) 3. Copy back all files to MMC. Now you will find that you will have more space. 256mb MMC got back 30+ mbs Speed Up Your Phone: First go to your To-do List (default app of your Phone) - Make a note and input as follows Subject: Speed Due Date: 01-29-2005(mm-dd-yy) Priority: set to High then press Done - Make a second Note and input as follows Subject: Qoukie Due Date: 01-29-2005(mm-dd-yy) Priority: set to Low then press Done - Do not exit yet, Press the Option of your Subject note w/c is Speed and Mark as done - then Press the Option of your Subject note w/c is Qoukie and Mark as done - Now, reboot your mobile. Handy Tips: - At the top of the main-menu and every folder, the keys 1 to 9 are shortcuts to the icons 1-9 - A shortcut on the left menukey in standby-mode will take more time to open than a shortcut on the right menukey. Reason: The left key is also used for the keylock so it shortly waits for pressing the * button. - While writing text press and hold "#" to switch between Alpha mode and Number mode. You can also press a key long to insert its number. - In standby-mode, press and hold 0 to launch your wap home page. - If you have your keylock activated just press the on/off button to turn on your backlight to look at the time when it's dark without having to unlock the keypad. - To keep the backlight on, run Torch (freeware), press and hold the Menu button and go somewhere else on the phone. - To check your current firmware version simply type *#0000# in standby screen. - To check your IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) type *#06# in standby screen. - To check your Bluetooth device address type *#2820# in standby screen. - Start up in Safe Mode (no 'auto start' apps will be running): Hold down the pencil key when you turn on the phone and hold it on until you have to enter your PIN code. - Format the phone memory by typing *#7370# in standby screen. - In standby mode, 45# + dials the number on your sim in memory slot 45. 50# + dials slot 50 and so on. Edit/Delete Message Now more questions and queries about Symbian OS phones: Tip 1 : Do u know how to use the edit button (abc or pencil button)? Heres how, in the inbox for example; u wanna delete multiple sms, simply hold the edit button, scroll down, and then, press c to delete the marked sms. The edit button can also b used to copy and past text in sms, simply hold it and scroll across, choose copy. pretty good for placing song names in ngages Tip 2 : Shit happens, on a smartphone, its inevitable u do something wrong, and tis calls for a format of fone. to format the fone, press *#7370#, then enter the lock code, which is the sec code of the fone. NOTE: batt must b full, else if format is disrupted by low batt, consequences will b disatrous I heard the code *#7780# works too, pretty much the same i tink. for 6600 users, to format the fone, theres an alternative way. Press and hold <3>, <*>, and the buttons, then power on fone, keep holding on the 3 buttons, till u come to a format screen. tis method ONLY works on 6600, and need not enter the sec code. BUT sec code wun be reset to default 12345. Tip 3 : TO NGAGE USERS; Did u know u can install .sis files simply using the cable given? Juz plug it in, place the .sis file anywhere on e: (the mmc), not in any folders, root of e:, disconnect, then look for it in manager. Tip 4: Save on battery and system memory being used by regulary checking the task manager which can be accessed by holding down the menu button!! Tip 5: Type *#06# to display your IMEI serial number, very valuable for the unlocking your phone to other sim cards Tip 6: Type *#0000# to view which firmware version you are running Tip 4a: Set the screen saver to a short time out period to prolong battery life. Tip 4b: Avoid restarting the phone, or repeatedly turning it on and off. This helps increase battery life. Tip 7: If you would like to avoid being "blue jacked", keep bluetooth turned off, or set your phone's visibility to hidden. Tip 8: Don't want to carry a watch and a phone? Set the screen saver to show date and time, then you can ditch the watch. Tip 9: Save memory when installing apps, by installing over bluetooth. This can be done using the nokia phone suite and a bluetooth serial connection. Only works with .SIS files, so java still has to be sent to the phone, but will save space when using .SIS files. Tip 10: Operator logos Use a filemanager like FExplorer or SeleQ to add the folders: "c:/system/Apps/phone/oplogo". Add a .bmp picture to folder "oplogo" and restart your phone! The .bmp picture size needs to be: 97 x 25 pixels Tip 11: Check if the recepients phone is on Delivery reports or Type *0# your message in the message composer window space then write your message, the recipient will not see the star zero hash bit - just the message When they read it it will relay a message back to your fone showing the time they recieved it. (haven't yet tried it myself though) Tip 12: BlueJacking First up, you need to know what Bluetooth is. There are lots of types of modern devices that incorporate Bluetooth as one of their many features. PDAs, mobile phones and laptops are a few of these modern devices. Bluetooth means that Bluetooth enabled devices can send things like phonebook/address book contacts, pictures & notes to other Bluetooth enabled devices wirelessly over a range of about 10 metres. So, we've got past the boring part. Now, using a phone with Bluetooth, you can create a phonebook contact and write a message, eg. 'Hello, you've been bluejacked', in the 'Name' field. Then you can search for other phones with Bluetooth and send that phonebook contact to them. On their phone, a message will popup saying "'Hello, you've been bluejacked' has just been received by Bluetooth" or something along those lines. For most 'victims' they will have no idea as to how the message appeared on their phone. Tip 13: While you are viewing a picture in your phone's gallery, press one of these shortcut keys (definitely works on 6600, not sure about other symbians) 1 - turn image anticlockwise 3 - turn image clockwise * - toggle on/off of full screen 5 - zoom in 0 - zoom out Tip 14: u can select all files in a folder by selecting THE folder and copy it then paste it somewhere. however u need to make a new directory. fexplorer wun let u copy that folder together. well seleQ can mark files to copy but it really takes time! Tip 15: Formats of images supported ones: JPG UPF GIF87a/89a WBMB MBM TIFF/F PNG EXIF QA: How to copy & paste text in your Nokia 3650: Press and hold the pencil key and select your text using the scroll key. Left function key will change to 'Copy'. Press it to copy the selected text to clipboard. You can paste the clipboard contents the same way: press and hold the pencil key and press 'Paste'. Or, press pencil key once and select 'Paste'. Press and hold the Menu key to open the application switching window, where you can *duh* switch between applications. If a program hangs and you can't shut it down, select the application in the application switching window and press 'C' to kill it. It's also a faster way to exit programs. Turn on/off the "click" sound made by the camera by selecting the 'Silent' profile or by turning warning tones on/off: Menu > Profiles > "select your activated profile" > Personalise > Warning tones > On/Off. (This also effects the sound of Java games and apps). To change background image go to: Menu > Tools > Settings > Phone > Standby mode > Background image > Yes > "choose an image". The best size for background images is 174x132 pixels. Only got blue, green and purple in your 3650 colour palette? This free app adds 3 more colours: Palette Extender. Display an image when someone's calling: Menu > Contacts > "select a contact card" > Options > Edit > Options > Add thumbnail > "choose an image". Add a personal ringing tone to a contact: Menu > Contacts > "select a contact card" > Options > Open > Options > Ringing tone > "choose a ringing tone". Delete all messages from your Inbox at once: Menu > Messaging > Inbox > Options > Mark/Unmark > Mark all > Options > Delete. Send or hide your caller ID: Go to: Menu > Tools > Settings > Call > Send My Caller ID > 'Yes', 'No' or 'Set By Network' to follow the default settings of your home network. If you often copy large files to your MultiMedia Card, I recommend a card reader. E.g. With a card reader it takes only 12 seconds to copy a 10 MB file! Record the sound of a phone call using the (sound) Recorder: Menu > Extra's > Recorder > Options > Record sound clip. Note: short beeps are audible during call registration. But there is a 60 second limitation so if you want unlimited sound recording get this app: Extended Recorder. While writing text, press "#" to switch between upper and lower case and Dictonary on/off (predictive text input). Press and hold "#" to switch between Alpha mode and Number mode. Keyboard shortcuts for zooming and rotating images in Images: 1 = zoom in, 0 = zoom out, press and hold to return to the normal view. 2 = rotate anticlockwise, 9 = rotate clockwise, * = full screen. In standby mode, press and hold the right soft key to activate voice dialling. To add a voice tag to a phone number, open a contact card and scroll to the phone number and select: Options > Add voice tag. You can customize both soft keys located below the screen (in standby mode): Menu > Tools > Settings > Phone > Standby mode > Left/Right selection key > "select an application". In standby mode. press scroll key center (joystick) to go directly to Contacts. In standby mode, press and hold 0 to launch your wap home page. In Menu or any subfolder, press numbers 1 - 9 to start the application at that location. 123 456 789 In standby mode, 45# + dials the number on your sim in memory slot 45. 50# + dials slot 50 and so on. If you have your keylock activated just press the on/off button to turn on your backlight to look at the time when it's dark without having to unlock the keypad. Never, ever, in your whole life, install WildSkinz on your Nokia 3650!!! WildSkinz screws up the whole 3650 system. It was never intended to work on the 3650, only on the 7650. Why assigning Video Recorder in the right or left soft key does not work? (Sound Recorder is launched instead of Video Recorder) It's a bug with firmware version 2.50. How to check your firmware version: A "Firmware" is the phone's operating system stored in internal Flash memory of the device (disk Z. Manufacturers release new firmware versions containing bug fixes, improvements and - sometimes - offering new functions. Firmware upgrade can only be made in authorized Nokia service centre (point). To check your current firmware version simply type *#0000# on main Phone screen. Start up in Safe Mode so no 'auto start' apps will be running: To make sure that no memory-resident programs start when you reboot your phone, hold down the pencil key when you turn on the phone and hold it on untill you have to enter your PIN code. (When you have trouble booting up the phone with the MMC in it because it got corrupted for some reason, this trick will almost always let you boot up the phone so you can remove the latest installed app which might have caused the problem or if your phone is "unrepairable" you can still back up your important data before you do a format.) How to totally format your Nokia 3650 and remove all installed applications, user files and restore all settings to default like it's new out of the box? (OEM apps won't be deleted like Camera and RealOne Player). A: First Format your MMC: Menu > Extras > Memory > Options > Format mem. card > Yes. Note: It is very important to format your MMC before you format your phone! Then format your phone by typing *#7370# on main Phone screen. Phone will ask: "Restore all original phone settings? Phone will restart." Press 'Yes' and enter your Lock code (default is 12345). Tip: Formatting takes several minutes so you'd better connect your Nokia 3650 to a charger to ensure that your battery doesn't get empty in the middle of formatting. Note: All your created acces points and mailboxes will be lost so take a note of them. And all application settings will be reset. E.g. In Camera, image quality is set back to normal and memory in use is set back to phone memory. And also in Messages, memory in use is set back to phone memory, etc. Also backup your contacts with PC Suite or a program like Contacts Manager. To reset your wallet, should you forget your code: Type in: *#7370925538# this will reset the wallet code, the wallet contents will be deleted. How to free more RAM on your phone> Method 1: Flight mode: Put your phone in "Flight mode" with Psiloc System Tools. Install System Tools, open it and select "Flight mode". This way you can restart the phone without your SIM card so there will be no running phone tasks in the background. Now you can have up to 3,5 MB of free RAM! Note: ironically enough, Flight mode doesn't work when Smart Launcher is installed, at least in my case. But i've also heard several reports of people who have both apps running without any problems. Method 2: Smart Launcher trick: Install Smart Launcher and open it. Go to Options, Settings and put Launcher ON. Now plug in your charger and switch off your phone. Wait untill the battery meter appears and short press the Menu button (don't hold). The menu should appear and now you can have 3,5 to 4,5 MB free RAM! (Hold Menu button to check RAM). The trick is that with the charger plugged in, the phone must get a minimum software support for charging, even when the phone is switched off. And somehow Smart Launcher has still got it's shortcut running and that's the Menu button. So when you press the Menu button, you go directly to the Menu without any other phone tasks running in the background so you trick the phone and you have more free RAM! Note: when you unplug the charger, the phone will switch off. Method 3: It frees a little about 100~200 KB but I guess it's useful sometime. Close your menu not by selecting the right selection key "exit", or pressing the menu key another time, they only hide the menu app but do not close it, to close it select the left selection key "option" and scroll down and select "exit" So when you open an app needs more ram reopen menu and close it, it's useful when play low bit rate video in realplayer paradis. |
After over 2 years of participating in hundreds of businesses, competing in at least as many different industries, with companies marketing both products and services, you begin to develop and accumulate some fundamental businesses axioms or “rules of thumb” that seem to make more sense everyday and gain more value in business practice as your career continues to advance and evolve. You like to think what you have learned and the business knowledge you have retained along your long and varied career path is unique, proprietary, or even “original”, but somewhere deep inside you know that most of the things you hold near and dear to your own business self identity probably were already developed, practiced, and taught way before you ever entered your first business conference room. You sincerely hope that attempting to document your “Cardinal Rules for Business Growth” in an article of this nature will somehow make sense to other business people, or better yet, your written contributions get added to other’s own personal list of business do’s and don’ts. Ultimately a business must sustain itself with profits to continue its legacy. Without consistent sales revenues and reasonable expense control it eventually makes little difference what else you may attempt do to continue to advance the future of the enterprise. Businesses need to grow because those that are risking their hard earned investment in the business logically expect a reasonable return on that capital. The simple reality of business is, if there is not a reasonable return on money invested in a company, it makes more financial sense to put that same money in a fixed, guaranteed return paper investment. Never again would you have to worry that your competition is about to make your entire product line obsolete! Before we get into my list of Cardinal Rules of Business Growth, it is most appropriate to acknowledge two fundamental business assumptions that relate to this list: 1) businesses are made up of people, working together for a common cause, existing by focusing on solving other people’s problems, namely “the customer” 2) No matter how “good” you think you are, how effective your team is and how much of the targeted markets you have cornered, there is, and always will be, another company attempting to do what you do “better”, cheaper, and more consistently than you ever thought. Your ultimate goal is to delay that from happening! A “for profit” company must have a plan and a clearly defined strategy, made up of tactics to achieve desired results. This article will focus on tactical efforts one should consider, in one form or another, to maximize the probability of continued, profitable growth. A very successful business mentor of mine once told me, “If it is important enough to throw money at, it is important enough to write down in black and white”… so if you have a business plan, a business strategy and a few tactics to pull it off, be sure to write them down! At least you have a fighting chance to improve upon the matter at hand if it is written. Thoughts, concepts and ideas are difficult to improve upon otherwise! Proven Tactics for Business Growth: Give priority to new product or service development Always seek ways to improve what you have to offer and develop means to obsolete your own products or services before someone else does Find new applications for existing products or services Be sure to establish a communication means between your company and your product / service users to determine how they really use your products. Offering a financial incentive to “surface” news applications helps too! The “easiest” sale of them all You have already spent the money to acquire your customers and build a relationships with them, why not ask what else can we make or provide for them? Know where to get all the answers ALL the answers about how your company is doing, where it should go and what it should stop doing, reside within your own customer base. Just ask! “Buy” rather than “Build” Take a good look at your targeted industry. There usually is a resourced limited company who offers viable products and services that relate to yours. Consider buying them versus investing the same money in an “organic” growth alternative. Think “out of boundaries”! If you just focus on US markets, someday you will find your company can no longer effectively compete because someone else beat you to the global market game board, the board the business game of tomorrow will be played on Go “E Commerce”! Establish an effective means, via the Internet, for your customers to educate and update themselves, solve their own problems and order your products with a few clicks of a computer mouse Know when to say “No” and “Stop”! The most effective business leaders know when to say “no” and when to say “stop”! Making or doing something that no longer makes financial sense needs to be dealt with decisively, no matter the, “We have always made those” , “We have always sold those” or “We have always done it that way” commentary. Measure and publish everything Business practices can only be improved upon if they are written, measured, tracked and periodically audited for effectiveness. All results justify being shared with all employees, good or bad. Always celebrate success publicly, criticize poor performance privately. There is always a price to pay for business growth. The process is always laden with mistakes, unexpected surprises, opportunities to learn new things, always offering “another chance” for future growth opportunities. There is no clear roadmap on how to best grow your company, each company has its own growth challenges. Hopefully these “Cardinal Rules for Business Growth ” stimulated some creative thought to make your business growth tactics that much more effective. In today’s global business environment the competitive edge we strive for gets thinner every day, growth is the price we pay to maintain that edge. |
Choosing the right career path is one of the most defining decisions we can make in life. Our job not only says a lot about what kind of person we are, but will influence what type of car we drive, what kind of house we live in, the people we associate with, and more. But above all these things, is the fact that we spend most of our waking moments at work!. Which means that if our job does not fulfill us or does not allow us to pursue our life goals, than it is not the career we should spend the rest of our life doing. Unfortunately most people go to work everyday and put in a mediocre performance, day after day because their heart is just not in their job. They're not interested in learning more about the field that they work in, they don't get excited about new developments, and they just do what is absolutely necessary to keep their job. Most people live for the weekend and are robots during the week. That's 5 days of being a robot and 2 days of doing what you want to do. Why not pursue a passion for 5 days, while adding value to the lives of others, and leave 2 days for recreation and relaxation? Life is just too short and fleeting to be spending so many precious hours each day doing something that makes us unhappy. It is impossible to do a job that we do not like and to feel fulfilled as a person, because our jobs take up such a large amount of our time. Our job is a big part of who we are. We have to get clear about what it is that gives us fulfillment in life, what fascinates us, or what we are passionate about. Once our interests are defined, we have to think about what career paths are available in that area. Sometimes there will be clear paths to take, like when our passion is designing websites, the job options could be to become a web designer, web programmer, or similar positions. But other interests may need more creative ways of thinking, like if you are passionate about collecting rare coins, your path may not be so clear. You may have to look into several sources of income; Owning a coin dealership, writing a guide to collecting rare coins, having a website built, and/or selling coins online. Because of the responsibilities of modern life and the necessity of money to support our lifestyle and family, we can't just quit our job and immediately pursue our passion. It may take months or years of planning while we continue to work in our 9 to 5 job and bring in a regular wage. The important thing is that we are moving towards the goal of doing what inspires us in life. Without the clear focus and continual small steps towards achieving our dream job, we would just be kidding ourselves. We may have to take evening or weekend classes, attend seminars, read books, or associate with people in your area of interest. If it's a product that you plan to sell, perhaps you could start selling it from home, at weekend markets, or setting up a website to sell it from. When we're moving towards our dream job and have a clear path before us it makes our 9 to 5 job less of a problem. Rather than going to work each day and hating the things we do, we can appreciate the job for being a step towards doing what really inspires us. It is putting food on the table, paying the rent, and funding the way towards the right career path. "What is it that you like doing? If you don’t like it, get out of it, because you’ll be lousy at it. You don’t have to stay with a job for the rest of your life, because if you don’t like it you’ll never be successful in it |

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi Nichers, It's always been my philosophy that you can only go as far as your mind will let you. What I mean by that is, if you have a positive mind set, you can go a long way. If you have a negative mind set, you have set up some unintentional roadblocks that will impede your path to success like road spikes to a car chase criminal. Having said that, here is a great book, a short read I might add, that can and will help to get you into the right mind set for success. It's a book from James Allen called, "As A Man Thinketh" You can grab your free copy right here http://theagentofchange-ng.com/index.php/topic,142.0.html I highly recommend that you read this short 27 page ebook at least once a month and preferably a couple times a month for best results. Please feel free to share this link with all your friends. Here's to your success |
