PoliticsUnderstanding Nddc's Role: Why Oil Spill Cleanup In Bille Kingdom Is A Shared Re by edunwablog(op): 7:45pm On Jun 25
Recent criticisms of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) over the oil spill in Bille Kingdom have generated considerable public debate. While concerns about environmental degradation and the welfare of affected communities are valid and deserve attention, it is important that public discourse on the matter is guided by facts, a clear understanding of institutional responsibilities, and the realities of environmental remediation in the Niger Delta.

Bille Kingdom, like many communities in the Niger Delta, has faced the devastating consequences of oil spills over the years. These incidents have impacted livelihoods, fishing activities, farmlands, and the overall ecosystem upon which residents depend. Understandably, community members and stakeholders expect swift interventions from government agencies and development institutions.

However, attributing sole responsibility for responding to oil spills to the NDDC overlooks the specific mandates assigned to various agencies within Nigeria's environmental and petroleum sectors.

The NDDC was established primarily as an interventionist agency tasked with facilitating sustainable development in the Niger Delta through infrastructure projects, social programmes, economic empowerment initiatives, and regional development planning. While environmental sustainability forms part of its developmental agenda, the direct containment, investigation, and cleanup of oil spills are responsibilities that largely fall under regulatory agencies and oil operators, in accordance with existing laws and environmental regulations.

This distinction is crucial. Oil spill response typically involves technical assessments, environmental impact studies, joint investigation visits, remediation procedures, and regulatory approvals. These processes are often coordinated by specialised environmental agencies in collaboration with oil companies operating in the affected areas. The NDDC's involvement is generally complementary, focusing on long-term development interventions, community support programmes, and, where applicable, environmental restoration initiatives.

Furthermore, it is important to recognise that the NDDC has invested significant resources over the years in projects aimed at improving the quality of life in the Niger Delta communities. Across the region, the Commission has undertaken road construction, educational support programmes, healthcare initiatives, skills acquisition schemes, and various environmental projects designed to address the developmental deficits that have historically plagued oil-producing communities.

Critics are right to demand accountability and effective action whenever environmental disasters occur. Public institutions must remain responsive to citizens' concerns, and affected communities deserve transparency in efforts to address ecological damage. Nevertheless, constructive criticism should be based on an accurate understanding of each institution's statutory role.

Holding the NDDC responsible for functions outside its primary mandate risks diverting attention from those entities legally obligated to prevent, manage, and remediate oil spills.
Rather than assigning blame without a full appreciation of institutional responsibilities, stakeholders should encourage greater collaboration among oil companies, environmental regulators, state and federal authorities, community leaders, and development agencies, including the NDDC. Such collaboration offers the most practical pathway toward lasting environmental restoration and sustainable development in Bille Kingdom and the wider Niger Delta.

The people of Bille Kingdom deserve solutions, not confusion over mandates. As discussions continue, it is essential that all parties focus on facts, accountability, and coordinated action that delivers meaningful relief and long-term environmental recovery for affected communities.

PoliticsNDDC Not Responsible For Local Water Supply Failures, Group Counters Dokubo by edunwablog(op): 7:07pm On Jun 25
In several communities across the Niger Delta region, the visible government presence around them are projects executed by the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC.
It is, therefore, preposterous for anyone to suggest that the NDDC is not living up to its billing as an intervention agency.

A recent video by social critic Hilda Dokubo about water issues in some communities in the region is a clear case of misplaced aggression.
While access to clean drinking water remains an undeniable right for every citizen of the Niger Delta, it is wrong for Dokubo to heap her grievances only at the doorsteps of the NDDC. It is curious that she found it convenient to ignore the statutory tiers of governance responsible for primary public utilities.

When social advocates close their eyes to the fundamental constitutional obligations of state and local governments and heap unearned blame on interventionist agencies, they do more than obscure governance; they mislead a hurting public.
Let us be entirely clear about the statutory tiers of service delivery that Hilda Dokubo chose to ignore for some malicious intent. Under the constitutional architecture of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the provision of basic, everyday domestic infrastructure, specifically water supply, primary health care, and local feeder roads, is the direct, non-negotiable prerogative of State Water Boards and LGA Councils.

State and local governments across this region receive monthly statutory allocations directly from the Federation Account to fund these grassroots necessities. To demand, as Dokubo cheaply implies, that a regional interventionist body assume the permanent administrative role of a community water authority is to completely absolve elected governors and local council chairmen of the very duties they were elected to perform.

In Dokubo’s video clip, she showed the polluted water from one of our communities. It was one of the distasteful consequences of the environmental despoliation in many Niger Delta communities. But rather than calling out the oil companies responsible for the pollution, she focused her gaze solely on the NDDC. The oil companies, like the state and local governments, have a duty to provide basic amenities for their host communities.
Across the Niger Delta, numerous communities have consistently maintained access to clean water through solar-powered water projects implemented by the NDDC.

Dokubo’s selective attack on NDDC does absolutely nothing to keep the water flowing; instead, she is giving a free pass to the silence and negligence of state and local authorities who are failing in their statutory responsibilities.
Hilda Dokubo and her audience must know that the NDDC was established as a specialised, regional interventionist agency, not as a replacement for state and local governments. Its core purpose is to act as a catalyst for macro-development, focusing on regional master planning, constructing major regional trunk lines and interstate roads, executing large-scale environmental remediation, and driving regional human capital development, among others.
Public commentary by social advocates like Hilda Dokubo must move beyond emotional rhetoric to informed, rigorous institutional analysis. Her current approach does not solve the water crisis; it merely shifts the political focus away from local failure and protects the very politicians who are short-changing the grassroots.

The NDDC has undertaken several water projects across the Niger Delta region. Some specific examples include the Emergency Construction of a 10,000-Gallon-Capacity Solar-Powered Water Project in the Soku Community, Akuku-Toru LGA, Rivers State and the solar-powered water project in Abraham Ojo Ama Community, Okobo, Eastern Obolo L.G.A., Akwa Ibom State.

These initiatives are part of NDDC's broader focus on rural development and clean energy. The commission's Managing Director, Dr Samuel Ogbuku, has emphasised the importance of solar energy in powering communities and promoting sustainable development. In addition to providing clean water, NDDC's solar-powered water projects also contribute to the region's overall development by improving healthcare.

PoliticsProperty War Erupts: Ogbuanu Slams Nwobodo With ₦5.8bn Lawsuit by edunwablog(op): 8:19pm On Apr 26
A high-profile land dispute between the former Governor of old Anambra State, Chief Jim Ifeanyichukwu Nwobodo, and the Chief Executive Officer of Energy FM, Dr. Basil Kenechukwu Ogbuanu, has escalated into a legal firestorm following the alleged demolition of property worth hundreds of millions of naira.

At the heart of the crisis is a ₦5.8 billion claim brought by Dr. Ogbuanu against the elder statesman and his wife, Dr. Patricia Nwobodo. The Lagos-based businessman alleges that his investments at Patson Estate, Independence Layout, were not only secured through a deceptive web of shell companies but were eventually reduced to rubble while he was being "persecuted" through the criminal justice system.

The Demolition and the ₦5.8bn Bill

According to court filings obtained by our correspondent, Dr. Ogbuanu is seeking ₦820 million in special damages specifically for the destruction of his buildings and the loss of construction materials.

This is bolstered by an additional ₦5 billion claim in general damages for what he describes as emotional and psychological distress.
Ogbuanu’s legal team asserts that after obtaining all necessary building permits and government approvals, his development was allegedly targeted in early 2026.

The plaintiff claims that while he was being detained, earthmoving equipment—allegedly protected by police officers—leveled his structures and carted away materials worth millions.

A Web of Companies and "Conflicting Titles"

The plaintiff’s statement of claim paints a picture of a complex transaction involving multiple entities linked to the Nwobodos. Ogbuanu alleges he paid over ₦235 million for several plots (R/18 to R/22), initially dealing with Millennium Construction & Estate Developers Ltd.

However, the plot thickened when subsequent transactions were moved to Linkana Hotels Limited. A search at the Ministry of Lands later revealed a third entity, Moss Island Limited, held the actual title as of 2022.

"All the sales done in the name of Linkana had no authority because the property belonged to another company," a source familiar with the case alleged.

The Counter-Suit: "No Enforceable Sale"

In a swift legal counter-move (Suit No. E/244/2025), Senator Jim Nwobodo and his wife have asked the court to declare that no valid or enforceable sale ever took place.

The former Governor maintains that Ogbuanu proceeded with construction despite being notified that titles were undergoing recertification due to government land-use changes.

Nwobodo claims he offered the investor a refund, which was rejected. He further alleges that Ogbuanu’s workers assaulted a police officer and "unlawfully confined" his wife during a site visit in January 2026.

The Failed Criminal Prosecution

While the civil suits loom, the Nwobodos suffered a legal setback on April 15, 2026. A Magistrate Court struck out criminal charges of conspiracy and assault filed against Dr. Ogbuanu.

His Worship D.K. Ekoh lambasted the complainants for a "lack of diligent prosecution," noting that Dr. Patricia Nwobodo failed to appear in court to lead evidence.

The court consequently awarded ₦1 million in costs against her, with the Magistrate remarking that complainants who stay in "luxury homes" instead of proving their case must pay for the wrongful inconvenience caused to the defendants.

The Road Ahead

As it stands, the Enugu State High Court is set to become the battlefield for two conflicting narratives: one of an investor allegedly defrauded and his property demolished, and another of a prominent family defending their estate from "unauthorized building activities."

PoliticsHands Off Ogbuku! Group Warns Political Enemies Over ‘lazy Lies’ by edunwablog(op): 7:17am On Jul 02, 2025
There is a high suspicion that some persons believed to be political foes of the managing director of NDDC, Dr Samuel Ogbuku, have initiated a media campaign aimed at rubbishing the commission's chief executive officer in the eyes of right thinking members of the public, says the Niger Delta Progressive Youths Forum, NDPYF.

This is coming at a time that Ogbuku has been receiving accolades for leading what has generally been described as the most vibrant and service oriented commission, in decades.

The group was reacting to some online media publications, ostensibly syndicated, to the effect that Ogbuku was funding an imaginary presidential ambition of Dr Goouck Jonathan, ahead of the 2027 race.

In the said reports which has been reproduced almost verbatim in some strange news platforms, sponsors of the publication claimed that Ogbuku made the NDDC to buy a property belonging to Jonathan, for use as its Yenagoa office, as a way of empowering the former president to run against the president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The group said in a statement on Tuesday by its president-general, Dr Theo Isidore, that "the publication is clearly the handwork of haters who are thinking of how to rubbish the MD in the eyes of the president.

" The fake news which has been in circulation in some media platforms is clearly generated by one man or a group of persons whose wishful thinking is to sow a seed of discord and perhaps distract Ogbuku from doing the excellent work he is doing in the Niger Delta.

"The reports attempt to sit the truth on its head. In the first place, Dr Jonathan has never indicated any interest in running any election in the near future. In fact, his wife, Dr Patience Jonathan recently confirmed this when she said her husband would not contest any election, hence her decision to rally Tinubu's wife and all progressive minded Nigerians, to secure victory for Tinubu in 2027.
" Also, we are not aware that Dr Ogbuku has told anybody that he is planning to contest any election now or in the near future. He has repeatedly said that his primary objective is to give expression to President Tinubu's renewed hope agenda, from the NDDC perspective.

" Besides, we can confirm, as stakeholders in this region, that the property which now houses the NDDC in Yenagoa does not belong to the former president."

Isidore who described the news report as a poorly conceived and lazily crafted weapon of destruction said if the authors wanted people to take them seriously, they would have shown their identity and properly cross checked their facts as required by journalism ethos.

"One thing is clear in all the syndicated reports- the writers' identities are not known, neither did they speak with anyone in or around the NDDC, before going to town with their false narratives.

" It is curious that the same information is being published and circulated with the speed of light on various blogs and news sites, with a similar narrative.
"We see this as a calculated attempt by some persons who are clearly jealous of the records breaking achievements of Dr Ogbuku and are therefore bent on bringing him down. But they have missed it."

The youths group urged security agencies to investigate and apprehend a those behind the fake news, with a view to putting an end to such destructive activities.

They also passed a vote of confidence of Ogbuku, saying the NDDC and the Niger Delta people have not had it so good for decades, even as they urged everyone to ignore the publications.

EducationWigwe University: The Audacity To Dream, Without Fear by edunwablog(op): 11:13pm On Oct 18, 2024
By Chijioke Amu-Nnadi

“My name is Herbert Wigwe, and I challenge you to be fearless.”

There is something inspiringly audacious about the dream that has given birth to Wigwe University, whose underlying philosophy is to be fearless. On Thursday, October 17, in the quiet town of Isiokpo, the headquarters of Ikwerre local government area in Rivers State, impressive academic minds, administrators, community leaders, luminaries, students and parents gathered in the architectural splendour of the university to declare it open.

That this is happening a mere 251 days after the tragic death on February 9 of its founder, Herbert Wigwe in California, the United States of America, is in itself beyond audacious; it is miraculous. The grand opening of the institution, founded on the very idea that impossible is only a dream, is a testimony that nothing is impossible. It is a testament to the undying human spirit; that anything can be achieved through hardwork, unwavering commitment to a vision and a dream, and a refusal to give up in the face of daunting challenges. Even a setback as devastating and monumental as the death of a dreamer.

Indeed, everything about the university, from its inception, the extensive work that went into selling the idea, to the first blocks that were laid to begin its construction, had the imprint and deep soul of Herbert Wigwe, the late banker and astute businessman whose name the university bears.

In outlining the philosophy behind the institution, Wigwe had declared: “Wigwe University is the culmination of my lifelong ambition, my mission to build an exceptional, world class, innovative, yet uniquely African institution to grow Nigeria’s next generation of leaders who will change the face of our continent. Through my foundation – The HOW Foundation – my mission is to shift the course of Nigeria’s future by grooming a fearless generation of Africans. Who would be future leaders, innovators and entrepreneurs propelling Nigeria and Africa forward in leadership, socio-economic growth and inspiration? Wigwe University will develop world class faculties, innovative curricula and modern learning methods.”

From the same town in which the university is situated, his death from a plane mishap while on vacation in the United States of America momentarily threatened to crash that dream. Wigwe did not just give his name to the university fashioned in the same nature of his flamboyance, attention to detail, brilliance, deep reflection and fearless ambition. He put his very soul and breath in its conception and execution. And so the fears that his dream university could crash with him too appeared valid. But that was only momentary.

In the blood stream of the university, as block by block dream became reality, was the mantra: “We, the Fearless.” It was not just a dream, or declaration. It had become religion; the sheer bravery and courage of that conviction. There is in a dream as fearless as that on which Wigwe University is founded that approaches the improbable and, yes, audacious. Away from the probing eyes of society, the dream slowly became reality, and the opening ceremony to finally open its doors to the world which Wigwe envisioned became, in the balmy sunshine of its surroundings, both affirmation and resurrection.

When Herbert Wigwe offered at the beginning that “With state-of-the-art faculties, collaborative spaces, innovative programmes and partnerships, mentorship, pastoral care and a vibrant campus culture, we will foster an environment that unleashes the potential of future fearless African generations,” he was voicing what only he had envisioned. But here, on this day, building after building, classy classroom after stunning lecture hall, speech after speech, prayer after prayer, it had become reality.

In his address, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Marwan Al-Akaidi, stated: “The physical and digital infrastructure we unveil today reflects our commitment to excellence. Our campus will feature cutting-edge classrooms, laboratories, libraries and art spaces designed to support a range of academic and extracurricular activities. From the latest technology in digital learning to sustainable building practices, our faculties will be a model of modern education infrastructure.

“Wigwe University is not only a place of academic pursuit, but a hub for creativity, collaboration and growth. Our campus is where minds will meet, ideas will flourish and future leaders will emerge.”

And as Professor Emeritus Julius Okojie, the university’s Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of its Governing Council, affirmed: “I was the Executive Secretary of the NUC for ten years and during this time I licensed about 80 universities. None of them started as well as Wigwe University.”

Such high praise for a university which could have crashed, but for the fearless and audacious spirit of its founder, and the resilience of the inheritors of his dream. As he said: “My name is Herbert Wigwe, and I challenge you to be fearless.” The death of a dreamer is not the end of a dream. Simple.

EFCC Investigates Dozie Nwankwo For Fraudulently Diverting CBN Covid-19 Grant

The member representing Anaocha, Njikoka and Dunukofia federal constituency, Hon Ferdinand Dozie Nwankwo is currently under investigation and will soon be arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for fraudulently diverting CBN Covid-19 grant.

The investigation was sequel to a petition written by a Human Rights Lawyer, Jude Osuagwu. Barr Osuagwu petitioned the apex bank to ascertain the true number of beneficiaries of the funds allocated to Anaocha, Njikoka and Dunukofia federal constituency in line with section 26 of the Freedom of Information Act. The petition was written after it was identified that Hon Nwankwo unlike his colleagues failed to prove that the names and account details he submitted for the grant were real.

Investigation showed how Hon Nwankwo used fictitious names and account numbers to divert over five hundred and fifty million naira (N550,000,000) from the NIRSAL microfinance bank facilitated grant. This was revealed when majority of the account numbers submitted by the lawmaker failed the BVN verification test.

More revelations equally showed how the lawmaker failed to execute the following projects in spite of release of funds. The projects include, Construction of Principal Quarters Nawgu (N200,000,000), Procurement of 250 Computer Units/Accessories for ICT Centre in Anaocha/Njikoka/Dunukofia Federal Constituency (N250,000,000), and Provision of Empowerment Items to Youths and Women in Anaocha/Njikoka/Dunukofia Federal Constituency. (N150,000,000).

The economic and financial crimes commission (EFCC) is also investigating Hon Nwankwo for gross misappropriation of public funds meant for several other empowerment programme.

Nwankwo was reported to have diverted about N3.3b constituency intervention fund. The amount is different from another sum of N1.1b the lawmaker purportedly spent on youth empowerment which there was no record of.

Nwankwo also reportedly diverted N600,000,000 which was meant to empower Anaocha, Njikoka and Dunukofia women - there is also no record of this empowerment programme.

Sources from the ICPC have confirmed that the ICT centre the lawmaker is building in his hometown, Enugwu-Ukwu was built on a personal land which is not in accordance with the law. Budgetary provisions were made for the centre to be built across Anaocha, Njikoka and Dunukofia LGAs, however that of Anaocha and Dunukofia remain unbuilt. It is expected that both the EFCC and ICPC will file a joint suit against Dozie Nwankwo.

Arewa Group Urges Northern Governors To Seal Shops Closed In Solidarity With IPOB's Sit-At-Home

The Arewa Youth Consultative Forum(AYCF) has rejected the recent call by IPOB on Middle Belt people to join its sit-at-home campaign, warning that no section of the North should be party to "a deliberate, politically-motivated plan to undermine or worsen the nation's current security challenges".

In a statement signed by the group's National President, Alhaji Yerima Shettima, the AYCF said the North has come a long way in understanding the use of constitutional and democratic means of channelling legitimate grievances, and cannot therefore be party to any undemocratic move".

AYCF, in the statement said since the governors of the Southeast seem to be satisfied with the activities of IPOB, "we hope they will continue with the sit-at-home for another ten years and we wish them the very best of luck. We know the southeast is IPOB's home but exporting their activities to the North will be faced with massive resistance from all lovers of peace in the North".

The group then declared: "We call on Northern Governors to step up action in order to ensure this outlawed terror gang called IPOB does not infilterate the region. We also expect the governors to ensure that any Northerner who shuts down his shop in solidarity with IPOB, should that shop sealed forever. And for the avoidance of doubt, we will not fold our arms and watch the North get further destabilized by a violent strategy, whether in Kogi, Benue, Plateau, Niger or any State in Northern Nigeria because our hands are already full with challenges of insecurity and we are praying fervently day and night to find lasting peace".

AYCF, in the statement, condemned what it described as the use of killings and arson to press home a demand that the democratic process in existence would have take care of.

They said: "We call on Northerners of good conscience to avoid any undemocratic means, including burning of government-owned structures, where fellow Nigerians legitimately work to feed their families".

PoliticsBoko Haram Asks Niger Residents To Flout Govt Orders, Shun Schools by edunwablog(op): 5:26am On Oct 05, 2021
Suspected Boko Haram terrorists have infiltrated many communities in some local government areas of Niger State, Akelicious reports.

They have reportedly directed residents to remove their children from formal schools, residents said and expressed fears that the onslaught would escalate in the coming days if nothing was done.

The terrorists had also directed the residents, both Muslims and Christians, to marry off their daughters at the age of 12 or face consequences, it was learnt.

The recent developments climaxed the arson by gunmen in Niger State, who were being described as “bandits” for a very long time. The terrorists had killed hundreds of people in Niger and contiguous states of Kaduna, Zamfara, Katsina, Sokoto and Kebbi.

Governor Abubakar Sani-Bello on Sunday alerted of the presence of Boko Haram insurgents in Niger, citing recent security breaches in the state.

“We have every reason to believe that we are not dealing with bandits. From the latest operation, the way they coordinated and planned the attack has also confirmed to us that they must have had some kind of training,” the governor said.

Several bomb mines, allegedly planted by Boko Haram were uncovered in Shiroro Local Government Area of the state.

The governor had severally described the bandits as Boko Haram fighters.

For instance, after series of attacks on villages in Shiroro and Munya LGAs on Sunday, April 25, and Monday, April 26, the governor told newsmen that, “The attackers included not only bandits but also Boko Haram members and their next target would be Abuja, a mere two hours away by road.”

The governor claimed that in Kaure, a village in Shiroro LGA, the attackers had hoisted a Boko Haram flag and were in control of the area.

Akelicious recalled that members of the Ansarul-Islam and Darul-Salam were dislodged from parts of Niger State a few years ago.

PoliticsGhanaians Resume Hostility Against Nigerian Traders by edunwablog(op): 6:21am On Oct 04, 2021
Ten months after a series of high-level bilateral talks between the Nigerian government and authorities in Ghana aimed at addressing the nearly decade-long controversy that led to the closure of Nigerian traders’ shops in Ghana, the issues have taken a turn for the worse, Akelicious investigation reveals.

Dozens of Nigerians have lost their sources of livelihood because of the blockade even as they called on the federal government to deploy other options to resolve the impasse.
It was gathered that between September 20 and 24, members of the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) had locked up additional shops belonging to Nigerians as part of a purported protest against foreigners who operate retail shops in their country.

During the recent onslaught, retail traders located at New Juaben South Municipality were the target.

The attackers said relevant laws of Ghana do not allow foreigners to engage in the retail market.

Dozens of shops have been locked this time in addition to the over 250 shops belonging to Nigerians locked in December 2019, July 2020 and December 2020.

Many of the affected traders said they were stranded and had to beg to feed. They were however reluctant to come back home despite a window created by the federal government to facilitate their safe return.

They said there was nothing concrete to sustain them when they come back home. At the centre of the lingering controversy was a $1 million (N410m) levy imposed on Nigerian traders and other foreign investors to pay Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) before the shops would be opened.

Some of the traders said the levy was more than the capital they have and described the tax as a deliberate attempt to force them out of Ghana.

The conditions set by the Ghanaian authorities had triggered a debate in Nigeria and within the African sub-region, which many considered as a breach of ECOWAS’ trade protocols.

After receiving a formal complaint from its citizens at the onset of the imbroglio, the Nigerian government had set up a ministerial committee to find a lasting solution to the plight of the traders but it appeared not much had been achieved.

The committee was made up of representatives of the ministries of Interior, Trade and Investment, Foreign Affairs and the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM).
After a meeting with a delegation of the Nigerian traders, the committee resolved to engage the Ghanaian government in every way possible to end the crisis, with a promise to evacuate any trader who may wish to return home.

Despite these efforts, the President of the Nigerian Traders Union in Ghana (NUTAG), Mr Chukwuemeka Nnaji, said there was hope in sight.

“Things are getting worse, members of the Ghana Union of Traders locked up more of our shops yesterday night (a fortnight ago),” he said.

“After the visit of the government delegation from Nigeria, the Ghana Ministry of Trade invited us for a meeting with GUTA and a task force was formed and inaugurated. We had second and third meetings and we could not continue because of the way the whole thing was going,” he said.

HealthCross Rivers' NMA Suspends Strike, Joins COVID-19 Fight by edunwablog(op): 3:43am On Mar 24, 2020
The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Cross River State chapter has called off its indefinite strike, which began on March 12 to join in the fight to curtail the deadly coronavirus pandemic.

The association yesterday announced the suspension of the strike after an emergency meeting in Calabar, the state capital, with the pledged to join other professional associations in the fight to contain the COVID-19 pandemic.

The members of the association were said to have embarked on the strike following the kidnap of the wife of one of their colleague, Mrs. Christiana Ekanem.

The branch Chairman of NMA, Dr. Agam Ayuk and Secretary, Dr. Ezoke Epoke, in a statement said: “Following Mrs. Ekanem eventual safe release by her abductors on March 21, the indefinite withdrawal of medical services in both private and public hospitals across the state is hereby suspended, while medical and dental practitioners in Cross River State are directed to resume duties immediately.

“The association remains grateful to everyone, who supported the family and the association in ensuring her safe release. The poor security situation in Cross River State remains a daily reality as citizens continue to live in fear. We, therefore, reiterate our call on the state government to show more political will and urgently put measures in place to secure lives and property in Cross River State as its primary constitutional responsibility.”

NMA expressed optimism that this would be the last time the association would have to take the difficult decision of withdrawing medical services in the event of kidnapping of its members and also expressed hope that their collective resolve would not be put to test again.
The association added: “The COVID-19 pandemic is a reality with increasing number of confirmed cases, which stands at 35 in Nigeria as reported by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and Federal Ministry of Health as at the time of this press release.

“We, therefore, call on the state government to enforce the ban on large gatherings and review to a more stringent limited number as the risk increases.”

NMA called on the citizens to take seriously the recommended guidelines on social distancing, hand hygiene and respiratory hygiene, and pledged to contribute and work with other professional associations to ensure that necessary facilities were available for healthcare providers to prevent coronavirus.

PoliticsKogi Guber: Prepare Your Handover Note, Wada Tells Bello by edunwablog(op): 6:23am On Oct 07, 2019
The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP) in Kogi State, Musa Wada has called on Yahaya Bello of the All Progressive Congress (APC) to start preparing his handover notes as he stood no chance of getting reelected.

Wada stated this at the weekend during the inauguration of the 600 PDP-member campaign committee. He said Kogi which was once vibrant and healthy, has been turned into a state of hopelessness and of beggars, due to non-payment of salaries and provision of social amenities by Governor Bello.

Wada assured he would provide quality service and restore the lost glory of the state in agriculture, sports, solid minerals tourism and culture. He urged the people to exercise their franchise correctly by voting massively for the PDP in the November election.

Wada said all parts of the state will enjoy dividends of democracy if he was elected governor, and he pledged to give priority to prompt payment of workers salaries and pension. State Chairman of the PDP, Mr. Samuel Uhuotu, tasked the committee to engage in issue-based campaigns and avoid engaging in hate speech and heaping of insults on opponents.

Uhuotu said Wada remains the candidate to beat, saying the poor performance of the incumbent Governor Bello made the election a walk over for Wada.

National Publicity Secretary of the party, Kola Ologbondiyan, urged the people use the election to liberate themselves from misrule, poverty and other forms of injustices.

Meanwhile, Director General, Yahaya Bello campaign organisation, Senator Smart Adeyemi has called on those opposing the second term bid of governor Bello to desist threatening they could attract the wrath of the ancestors. Adeyemi said Bello’s candidature was divinely sanctioned..

Adeyemi, who spoke at the weekend in Lokoja said traditional institutions alongside major stakeholders in western senatorial district had taken a stand to support Bello. Anyone who acts contrary in the zone fights the ancestors, said Adeyemi.

PoliticsWe Are Adopting Edo-hip To Revamp Edo Healthcare Sector –obaseki by edunwablog(op): 3:33am On Sep 21, 2019
Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said his administration has adopted a reformist agenda to transform the state’s healthcare sector with the Edo Primary Healthcare Improvement Programme (Edo-HIP). Obaseki said this at an interactive session with healthcare stakeholders at Government House, Benin City, the state capital, on Friday.

The governor, who presented the state’s Health Improvement Programme (EDOHIP) to the stakeholders during the session, said the purpose of the interactive session was to have an honest and open discussion on how to make the state’s healthcare sector more effective and efficient. “Our healthcare system in Edo State must be restored. We want to make this state a destination for medical tourism.

I don’t want to see any patient passing through Edo to other states. Rather, I want them to stop in Edo State for treatment. “Our goal as a government is to ensure that by the time we finish with all the reforms in the health sector, Edo will become the healthcare hub of the nation.” He said he was championing a reformist administration that prioritises programmes and policies that make life better for the people of the state.

PoliticsNo Shortcuts To Enrolment Into Sips — Uwais by edunwablog(op): 5:18pm On Sep 01, 2019
The Special Adviser to the President on Social Investment, Mrs Maryam Uwais, says the National Social Investment Office(NSIO) ensures a level playing field for all Nigerians in the execution of Federal Government’s Social intervention Programmes (SIPs).

Uwais, in a statement by Justice Bibiye, Communications Manager, NSIO, on Sunday in Abuja, said structures had been put in place to ensure that those who benefited from SIPs were captured based on merit.

The presidential aide addressed the Course II participants of the Kasshim Ibrahim Fellowship in kaduna, a mentorship programme designed to groom future leaders in Nigeria.

She told the group of budding leaders drawn from various parts of the country that gone were the days when a privileged few in the society benefited from a government empowerment initiative designed to reach out to the poor.

“All applicants are encouraged to engage with the processes in place if they need a job; the programmes are open to everybody.

“You don’t need to know anybody to get enrolled into N-Power, for instance.

“Same procedure applies to the cash transfer programme and other components.

“We have done similar programmes in the past but such efforts were not as effective because the drivers at the time did not establish mechanisms and structures that aim at targeting the poorest of the poor.”

Uwais revealed that the process of developing a reliable Social Register in each state of the federation and the FCT was ongoing.

She said that that well-trained people were being sent to the various communities to identify the socio-economic needs of the people based on their circumstances and peculiarities.

Uwais said that for the first time in a long while, a government in Nigeria had consistently budgeted definite amounts of money for its poor and vulnerable citizens, irrespective of their party affiliations and ethno-religious differences.

She said that poverty did not know culture, party affiliation, ethnicity or religion.

“ Majority of Nigerians who are poor don’t even have voters card or know what is happening in the political circles; but government has a responsibility to each and every one of them; you need to see how beneficiaries appreciate what we are doing.

“ A woman came with a big bag to collect just ten thousand naira; when we asked why, she told us she hasn’t had such an amount of money before and needed to be sure she could carry her money home, after payment.

“The cash transfer programme goes beyond cash payments, as community facilitators, who are staff within the LGAs, are trained to visit them every week, to teach them how to form savings groups, life skills, sanitation, nutrition and hygiene.

“Indeed, due to the fact that the mentoring and support is embedded within the communities, we have confirmed that these beneficiaries have so far saved over N500 million, and are investing their energy and monies in productive activities such as farming, animal husbandry, poultry farming and rehabilitating community infrastructure.”

She, however, regretted reported cases of extortion of a few cash transfer beneficiaries by people who take undue advantage of their vulnerability, limited knowledge of banking procedures and use of gadgets to defraud them.

Uwais said that because cash payments come with several hazards, steps were being taken to address this challenge.

According to her, the NSIO has started the process of mapping, to identify money agents and financial institutions that will facilitate the transfer of cash directly to the beneficiaries.

Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, thanked Uwais for honouring the invitation to speak to the young ones.

El-Rufai described her as a woman of great conscience and one of the few accomplished women in Northern Nigeria, who had made outstanding contributions towards humanitarian efforts and social justice in the country.

The Kasshim Ibrahim Fellowship, a brainchild of Gov.El-Rufai, is a nonpartisan initiative with a mission to raise the next generation of leaders and prepare them for leadership through mentorship and a long period of exposure to the work environment

PoliticsAPGA Dissociates Self From Suit Against Otti by edunwablog(op): 2:54am On Aug 27, 2019
The Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has dissociated itself from an alleged move by some party members seeking the withdrawal of the party from the governorship election petition tribunal, sitting in Umuahia.

Briefing journalists yesterday, the factional chairman of APGA in the state, Mr. Nkem Okoro, said the party was seriously standing with its governorship candidate in the 2019 election, Dr Alex Otti.

He said that the party’s resolve to reclaim the state from the hands of her enemies and redeem the people remained unshaken.

The group, led by a factional chairman of the party Rev. Augustine Ehiemere, had filed an application at the tribunal, seeking the removal of APGA as the first petitioner in Otti’s petition, challenging Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu’s election.

But Okoro alleged that the application was intended to scuttle the chances of APGA at the tribunal.

He said that APGA remained a petitioner in the matter and would stop at nothing to reclaim the state from the Peoples Democratic Party.

Okoro said that the party would not want to discuss anything that might appear subjudice, since the case was already at the tribunal.

“We would, however, gladly inform you that our team of eminent lawyers presented a watertight case, ladened with overwhelming facts of evidence, to prove that the election was a charade,” he said.

He urged the party faithful to continue to be steadfast, describing PDP as a religion in Akwa Ibom.

CelebritiesI’ve Been A Victim Of Relationship Abuse –RMD by edunwablog(op): 4:31am On Aug 10, 2019
Actor and former Commissioner for Culture and Tourism in Delta State, Richard Mofe-Damijo a.k.a. RMD has lamented how he was abused by those who had easy access to him.

Sharing his experience, RMD recounted how he often got requests from people who wanted to have relationship with him in different capacities.

“I never take it lightly, which is why I’m usually not quick to jump in on mentoring or being a father or brother figure, because I have been a victim of relationship abuse where people take their unlimited access to me for granted, forgetting that relationship is a currency.

“Relationships, irrespective of what type, have the power to serve as a capital. There are relationships that give you leverage, some people have gotten ahead in life because of who they married, who they worked with or for. One respected person’s endorsement could do more than financial capital, so it is important not to enter into relationship with the intent of giving nothing in return, there’s no way that would work, you must be willing to service whatever relationship you have,” he said.

RMD added: “Be skillful in relationship building by being selfless, unassuming and not feeling self-entitled. Respect boundaries, don’t be a user, be humble, accountable and have integrity. Have respect, more for yourself than the one you latch on to, because it is self-respect that restrains you from behaving in ways that put you in bad light.”

PoliticsAfdb Offers AU $5m Grant For Afcfta Implementation by edunwablog(op): 7:33am On Aug 08, 2019
The take off of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) got a notch better yesterday, when the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group, signed a $4.8 million institutional support grant to the African Union (AU) for its implementation.
The grant, earlier approved by the Group’s on April 1, 2019, forms part of a series of interventions by the region’s biggest development lender in its role to accelerate implementation of the free trade agreement, seen as a major force for integrating the 55-nation continent and transforming its economy.

AU’s Commissioner for Trade and Industry, Albert Muchanga and Andoh O. Mensah, who represented the bank’s Director of the Industrial and Trade Development Department (PITD), sealed the deal that signaled the startup of the implementation.African leaders met in Niamey, Niger, on July 7 and launched the implementation phase of the free trade area agreement established in March 2018 after it became operational at the end of May this year.

Currently, 54 states have signed the deal and are set to begin formal trading next July.“The AfCFTA is going to work and we are confident that by July 1, next year, all the 55 countries would have been state parties – meaning, they would have signed and ratified the agreement and intra-African will start,” Muchanga said.

While urging the countries to use the one-year period to complete the parliamentary processes, leading to ratification, he commended the AfDB’s strong and consistent support to ensure smooth implementation of the agreement. He said the grant would be used judiciously for the rollout of various protocols relating to the structure and mandate of the AfCFTA secretariat.

The AU currently has an interim secretariat, tasked to provide the organisational structure for the permanent administrative body, its work programme and related issues, including its budget. The Niamey summit announced the siting of the AfCFTA secretariat in Accra, Ghana.

The Continental Free Trade deal has the potential to create the largest free-trade area in the world– uniting 55 African countries with a combined gross domestic product of more than $2.5 trillion. It is a major force for the continental integration and expansion of intra African trade, currently estimated at around 16 per cent.

The agreement is expected to expand intra-African trade by up to $35 billion per year, ease movement of goods, services and people across the continent’s borders and cut imports by $10 billion, while boosting agriculture and industrial exports by seven per cent and five per cent respectively.

Mensah pointed out that the deal will help to stabilise African countries, allow small and medium sized enterprises to flourish, promote industrialisation and lift millions out of poverty.

“If AfCFTA is complemented by trade facilitation reforms, reduction in non-tariff barriers, improved infrastructure and policy measures to encourage employment and private sector investments, it will stimulate poverty reduction and socio-economic development across Africa,” he said.

He added that the goals of AfCFTA are aligned to the AfDB’s flagship High 5s initiative- light up and power Africa; feed Africa; industrialize Africa; integrate Africa; and improve the quality of life for the people of Africa.
