West African Union University (WAUU), located in Cotonou, Republic of Benin, has a mixed and controversial status regarding its legitimacy and recognition in Nigeria. Recognition and Issues in Nigeria • NUC Listing: The National Universities Commission (NUC) in Nigeria previously flagged or listed some satellite/collaborative arrangements involving WAUU operating illicitly or unapproved within Nigeria. • HND Conversion & Degree Mills Concerns: Nigerian regulatory bodies (including the NUC and Federal Ministry of Education) have cracked down on various Cotonou-based and francophone private universities offering accelerated "HND to B.Sc. conversion" or part-time/distance programs without proper accreditation or evaluation of certificate equivalence. • NYSC Mobilization: While the university markets guaranteed mobilization for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Nigerian authorities have frequently scrutinized or suspended the mobilization of graduates from unverified Cotonou and Togolese République universities pending credential evaluation. |
