Adobe PhotoShop is a Raster-based application basically for Photo Manipulation. Adobe Illustrator on the other hand is a Vector-based application basically for drawing. CorelDraw is also a Vector application that have tried, over the years to match the versatility of Illustrator. Adobe Illustrator is a more professional and international tool for Graphic Design. Though these applications (Illustrator and PhotoShop) have over-lapping functions, they are built for different design tasks. For me, Adobe is the preferred tool. Graphic Design vs Desktop Publishing This is certainly an interesting topic for discussion. I thank Smartsoft for his brilliant and practical contribution. I wish to let would-be-Graphic Designers understand that Graphic Design goes beyond the ability to navigate the computer. Graphic Design is a creative discipline that have its fundamentals in Fine-Art. You don't learn Graphic Design by starting on the computer platform. A Graphic Design student must first learn how to draw or sketch, understand Space, Form, Colour and other Elements and Principles of Design - just to get started. What does it take to become a Graphic Designer? What does it take to become a Desktop Publisher? Is Graphic Design the same thing as Desktop Publishing? I ask because many people who learnt Desktop Publishing (DTP) from computer training institutes present themselves as Graphic Designers. Anyone with any idea why this is so? Professional Graphic Design Agencies usually handle Design related projects that some Advertising Agencies can not deliver on. Their specialty is to deliver designs that sell. Some companies resort to Design Shops, Design Agencies or Design Bureaus when they do not get result (in terms of design) from their Ad Agencies.
