@eyop
I do not have no way of knowing if the name is ancient or not I am not from akwa ibom but I do know about two or three people presently who are bearing udoeyop

well, if I may ask what names have replaced those ancient names that are no longer in use as am curious if they are not being replaced with efik names as I have been running into a lot of ibibio people now bearing efik names which they have claimed as their own

please no efik name is silly the all have meanings and efik do not name their children after rats like ibibio in ibibio ekpu is rat and udoebok is second male child of a monkey

just a very surreal culture that is why you all are running from it

and we have a very popular ibibio journalist named ekpu rat, how about udoeyop and eyop is palm fruit and udo is a second male child so in ibibio udoeyop is the second male child of a palm tree?

in efik asari and asandia are named reserved for 2 female twins just like taiwo and kehinde in yoruba if am not mistaken..

please what names do you give twins in ibibio is it ekpu and ebok?

we do not want this Efik/Ibibio nonsense, the difference is clear

oh yes we left our language behind the ibibio language is a subset of efik because it borrowed so heavily from the efik language and efik is widely spoken in some parts of akwa ibom from oron to uruan to adiadia and in abriba and arochucku and in parts of Cameroun

see, you still do not get it young man you do not claim what you are not and you cannot become wealthy or rewrite your history and repackage it because you are now earning more money from federal allocations. the truth is the efik fought for akwa ibom state as you guys were too timid and never wanted to leave your masters in calabar and we had to force you all out to go back home.

to tell you how slow you guys are at the creation of akwa ibom state no ibibio or akwa ibomite was present according to reported story in the news and it was chief tony ani the former minister of finance and chief edem omon both efiks who received the flag on behalf of ak and even named the state. do you know this to be true? I do not have any independent confirmation but I think chief ani said so if am not mistaken during the oil well saga

you guys would have remained in calabar till tomorrow and kept saying we are one and up till today you are desperately trying to be efik and there is a push back from the empire or what is known as the empire striking back because 5 million people should not desperately try to be assimilated into 2 million people except they are incapable of surviving on their own

the ibibio have their culture and history and are separate people from efik and that is it, it is what it is and there is no denying it and you belong in a separate state and in most cases closer to oron, ibeno, ikot abasi, anang people in ak and the ibos in aba, umuhia, onitsha, anambra than the efiks in calabar

please try to integrate your language and story with your nearest neighbors and live efik and her cultural heritage alone we just do not hate the ibibios but we want to preserve what is ours and in we like efik better.

in ibibio land boy boy are superior than their masters just a bunch of mentally inferior people please do not add your story or language to efik language

the efiks are Ok and proud of their history, language, culture and everything else and do not need ibibio or anyone else and you could live in calabar and learn to speak efik a superior language after all the ibibios no longer like their names like udoeyop, nwa, inibong, ofonmbuk, udofia, apkandem, ekpu (rat) for the more prestigious efik names like archibong, eyo, arit, asari, asandia, ekeng, ansa, andem, afi etc

in culture, you have changed your dressing mode from ibibio to efik and have also now borrowed the efik marriage tradition including the lavish efik ceremonies and costume and who would not after all na who no like better thing

well, a superior people do not discard their culture for another man's culture but inferior ones do and efik does not want anything out of Ibibio culture because it has a superior culture from her cuisines afang, afia efere, edikangikong, abak (banga soup), to her legendary sense of cleanliness to their genteel manner and welcoming ways

I just met an ibibio woman who confessed that efik language is just so romantic and her language not too pleasing to the ears and annoying. now I know why you people want to discard your language for efik

God forbid

it is true that tinapa is a white elephant even though the concept was good but the failure of the fgn to grant tax exempt status at the time when the investors were on ground or had the calabar channel been dredged may be the story would have been different

but, how is the tinapa waste pipe different from the white elephant called akpabio international stadium in uyo? that is even worse and since you people in ak are so short sighted you failed to understand that uyo as a city cannot support sporting events and every match nigeria has played in that place has been a disaster including the one that ousted nigeria from the last cup of nations

Ok, let me educate you a little about economics since you bought grades in school and only know how call people dumb or something because you are intellectually inferior. the hundreds of millions of dollars wasted on the stupid stadium could have been used to establish industries or invested in a refinery or agro related businesses where jobs would be generated for the teeming ak unemployed youths. as it is now, the stadium is going to be a drain on the coffer of the state as it would not be able to pay for its maintenance for a very long time to come and because of lack of sporting events, concerts, etc it is not going to add kobo to the revenue profile of the state or generate employment either.

so, you see tinapa in another man's as a waste pipe and a stadium named after the immediate anang dictator governor of ak who reduced ibibio majority in the state to second class citizens as a good investment. what kind I say that is typical ibibio man for you very comical

I do not think any efik man from calabar has anything to be jealous of uyo or akwa ibom for because calabar is among the top six or seven cities in nigeria an uyo is not even in the top 20 and the state is not even as industrialized as the city of calabar if you should know

@babaTony,
if you consider boy boy and housekeeping work as being industrious eh after all there is dignity in labor but I just wished the ibibios and akwa ibomites would stop claiming to be from calabar as they have tarnished the good image of the calabar heritage and custom

for the record, most of the boy boys and housekeepers as well as kidnappers and ama uke are from ibibio and or akwa ibom people and not from calabar

and efik man would rather die or drink is kai kai as you said than be an indentured servant. the efiks are just too proud for that kind of work and meanwhile how come you cannot do your industrious work in akwa ibom and stop being boy boy and housekeepers all over nigeria

please stop dragging calabar name into ibibio story and history the efik man is no one boy boy and or housekeeper but the ibibios are and that is why we do not want your story in our story because like I said before the ibibio and efik story are completely different it is that of a master/servant relationship if you should know and that is putting it mildly

who cares about oil and or oil wealth and what exactly has the oil wealth done for ak and or nigeria for that matter? the fact remains that most the niger delta is still very poor comparatively and akwa ibom more so as it is not even as industrialized as cross river state with mega multi billion industries as the General Electric Manufacturing Plant, the almost 2 billion dollars Unicem cement plant, dangote cement, the over 70 assorted group of industries in the Calabar free trade zone cftz, the multi billion dollar Summit Hills development which includes the the calabar international conference center, the almost 300 million dollars Calabar international golf course, the calabar specialist hospital, mono rail, the golf estate residential neighborhood, and on and on and on http://www.conventioncentrecalabar.com/

Akwa ibom on the other hand has been a big disappointment as all you people do there is steal from the monthly allocations with only a few roads and bridges to show for the huge allocations you received from fgn to the detriment of other states. akwa ibomites are still relatively poor and I wonder what you all would do if cross river state were to send all ibibio people in its state civil service home as was done by abia or imo state sending some non indigenes home

please oil money is nothing if not well managed and akwa ibom and nigeria are case study in foolishness and waste and we are no mad about no stupid oil wells which are mostly owned by non niger deltans but in Ibibio not trying to hijack our history, culture and tradition as the ibibios are notoriously crafty.

the ibibios cannot even to stay in your so called "wealthy state" and are all over calabar because it is just that damn good

See why you should have studied in school instead of buying grades and most of you young people do not know much about anything this days. The obongship predates nigeria and the coming of the british to nigeria and we have a system of government which the white man said was organized, democratic and as sophisticated as their own anchored by the great Ekpe society that ibibio are not allowed to be initiated into because it is only meant for pure blooded efik, efut, ibo, and abakpa or qua people

there was a calabar empire that stretches from the shore of the calabar river to the whole of ibibio land and up to some parts of iboland in nigeria and bakassi and fernando po or panya in cameroun and present day equatorial guinea. Please when next you have the opportunity to go to school do not give anybody any money if s/he would not teach you anything because a mind is a terrible thing to waste and sorting has only succeeded in producing intellectually inferior citizens. Please read about the old calabar empire or kingdom below as a recorded history of yore not the new day concocted lies by way of ibibio history some of you are peddling on the internet

please visit http://wn.com/ibibio_language_tutorial to learn more about the efik language and you cannot introduce your dialects and words into an already established written and recorded language belonging to another people without their consent

it is Ok to be enthusiastic about being Akwa/Cross or whatever but a language expresses a cultural history and tradition of a people and the experiences of the Ibibio people are distinctively different from those of efik and so is their spoken and or written languages

the truth is the ibibio language is a subset of efik and that is it and borrows heavily from efik and even the name of your state is efik akwa means big, large, etc and ibom is efik word for universe, domain etc

I hope you have learn a little about efik people and their language and the english would not let the germans insert their words into their language or yoruba let ibo be inserted into theirs and the ibibios would not let oron be inserted into their language etc

the efiks are entitled to have their language preserved in its purest form as a part of their heritage

you did not go to school or took the time out to read your history lessons and for your information the Old Calabar empire was efik and mostly made up of slave traders and merchants. The history of nigeria could not be written correctly without mentioning the role played by efiks of calabar.

on the other hand the history of ibibio could not be told without mentioning efik because it is so murky, inconsistent and incomplete and there are so many versions of your history so much so that it is laughable.

Please see the list of efik kings http://efikeburutu.org/chronicle.html thru the ages and notice how there is no name like udo, akpan, udoeyop, ekott, and some of those ibibio names showing that the two people are two distinct tribes and you people are running away from your silly names like udoebok to more meaningful and better sounding efik names like arit, eyo, asuquo, eme, ekpeyong, nsa, Ikwo, asari, asandia, koko, affiong (afi), ako, nkoyo, abasi (efik God) later corrupted by english as bassey etc and now you even claim to have a king and adopted the efik traditional kingship title edidem as in edidem udo. but your traditional "kingship" title used to be ikpaisong remember? oh I forgot you did not read your history lessons

please I do not how superior ibibio is when they are copying everything efik and please be kind enough to post your history here and I do not know which version of it you are going to post since there are so many of them and I like the one that claimed that the ibibios waited for the efiks at river niger and then migrated with them to the niger delta. what a scam, please the efik do not know you people like that and migrated alone

and please read your history lessons before attempting to talk about history

I do not know what you are babbling about Oron for the issue was about Efik/Ibibio language which is utter nonsense and as you have rightly mentioned efik, ibibio, oron etc are linguistic neighbors and not one integrated language.

so, why are people in AK quick to call other people names instead of sticking to issues raised? Why don't we have Oron/Ibibio language and Oron/Annang language since there are all linguistic neighbors in the same state Akwa Ibom

If you do not know what you are talking about just sit back read and learn and there are some incomplete languages in the world and they are called dialects of other languages just like Ibibio is a dialect of the Efik language because it borrows heavily from efik and could not be spoken solely on its own. which makes it incomplete just like naija slang being a subset of the original english language. and for your information the bible has been translated into many complete languages worldwide and ibibio has not been till today, why?

Of course there is nothing special about the efik language but the efiks would not like Ibibio words introduced into their language or having their language modified to accommodate non efik speaking Ibibios in the name of brotherhood or whatever and would also like to preserve their language in its purest form for posterity and pass same in its true form down to generations to come.

we certainly would not like our children growing up speaking Ibibio or any other foreign language for that matter but Efik and am sure you wish the same for your children and grand children unborn speaking your own tongue

so, when the efik language was translated into the bible there was no country called nigeria in 1847 and certainly no entity or colony known as Ibibio please correct me if am wrong.

that being said, the efiks have a proud and storied history that predate nigeria and Ibibio society and people and would want to preserve that for themselves and generations unborn and would not want its history and culture to be tainted with another peoples language and history

A language is a cultural heritage and those who do not know that are the ignorant ones..

I know you are a proud ibibio man so much so that you are trying to sneak your God given language into another man's language through the back door. The ibibio is where all other languages came from in the crs/aks axis? I think not as in your state you have so many dialects like ibibio, anang, ekit, oron, andoni, etc. and oron man speaks efik more and no ibibio at all because ewang in oron was one of the 3 original efik settlements in the area namely calabar (atakpa), creek town (iboku) and ewang in the present day oron in aks. so, that is why some of them in oron claim efik and correctly so.

the efiks have no variation of the efik language in crs but we do have the ejaghams and quas which are also spoken in Cross River State and in Cameroun.

I do not know what the ibibios run in crs as you have not been running much as the majority in your state in the last eight years when akpabio and anang man turned you all into second class citizens in ak

I think if you look critically at what am saying may be you will see the wisdom in the point am making after all the bible even say that
God Bless the Child that has his own!

be nice...

abadie is Ibibio salutation for how are you? Efik is etie didie
nek unek like in (iyanya song) is efik for dance like in oya dance and iyanya is efik
akwacross is a name coined by those who claim to be be of efik/ibibio parentage which is nonsense in efik because in efik culture you are from where your father is from.

thus if your father is from ibibio and your mother is efik you are ibibio and if your father is efik and your mum is ibibio you are efik..

some of this young ibibio people are confused...

Sure, could you tell us what the consonants and alphabets of Ibibio language are?
and please do not repeat Efik alphabets here..

and a language with its consonants need not be integrated to another fully established language like Efik which is one of the 9 major nigerian languages including Ijaw, Tivi, Yoruba, Hausa, Ibo etc that nigerian news are broadcast in

the efik/ibibio language concept is a mirage as some of the ibibio words are not known to efik and the efiks do not speak the ibibio language or anang or oron etc

and why are Ibibios so keen on integrating their God given language with another in the first place and why not ibo, or( oron, anang, and eket) all in akwa ibom instead of efik in another state. You cannot integrate your language with another tribe's without their consent

please the Efik language is established and recognized as a complete language worldwide and Ibibio is not..

Culture / Re: Names Of Animal In Efik/ibibio by efikproper: 1:16am On Jul 24, 2015
There is nothing like Efik/Ibibio language but there is pure efik language and the efik holy bible and hymn book was translated from the english language in 1847 or thereabout as a complete language while all attempts to come up with ibibio version was unsuccessful since the ibibio language is an incomplete language and borrowed heavily from efik language mainly spoken by efik people of Calabar, Cross River State and efik settlements in Oron and Uruan in Akwa Ibom, Abriba etc in Iboland and parts of Cameroun.

The Efik/Ibibio language movement is a desperate attempt by the Ibibios to promote their dialect which is a subset of the Efik language and just like anang which is also widely spoken in Akwa Ibom and a variation of the Ibibio dialect.

It would have been better for the ibibios to try to promote their own language or dialect rather than trying to hijack the Efik language and insert their dialects into it since the efik language dictionary, efik versions of the holy Bible and Hymn book are already written and or archived and most importantly the so-called Efik/Ibibio nonsense is not supported by Efik people or the palace of the Obong of Calabar the custodian of Efik culture and traditions.

It is mainly a concoction of Akwa Ibom people especially the Ibibios and just like the Anang and Oron people of Akwa Ibom would not come up with some unsupported or unsolicited addition of their dialects to another tribe's language or would they for that matter allow the Ibibio language to be integrated into theirs so would Efik people of Calabar would not allow the alteration of their language by the Ibibios or anyone else.

The Ibibios should look elsewhere or try to promote their own as some of us do not speak Ibibio..

Cheers,
Efikproper
