AutoElectNG: Which country's corolla are we talking about here? US/Japan/South Africa? South Africa
6. Does the vehicle happen not overheat even if the a/c is on PROVIDED THAT you are in freeway traffic as opposed to stop and go traffic? *The vehicle doesn't overhear at all, if the a/c is not on. No matter the type of traffic*
I know that without A/C no overheating
I want to establish if 1. A/C is ON and 2. You are driving at speeds of 100 km or more (aka freeway traffic) for extended periods of time it still overheats? Please run the test and revert. [b]it doesn't overheat: I took it from Ebgeda to Its and back for a little over 3 hrs without a/c and it did not overheat[/b]
Finally, seems you just got the ride, and you attempted to upgrade it with A/C when this happened. |

FrankGiel: Don't be too quick to change to a double cell radiator.. - how long have you had the radiator.. -when did this problem start. -does the car overheat in the evenings/night
A whole lot of uncertainties could be the cause. It will need you delineating one from another. I have a feeling the radiator is actually worn out regardless of whether its leaking or not and it will need replacement.. Double cell might be more appropriate. I'm assuming its an old model corolla (below 2006)
Before you change, have a competent rewire check out the electronic configurations.. Let him be certain the fan is not failing as you drive. If your fan fails, you will have this problem..
This should not be a rocket science problem.. Like i said before let a competent rewire advise you. If you are in Lagos I have a good rewire at surulere (inside national theatre). His name is Wasiu +234 802 830 4229.
Thanks Have a great day. |

AutoElectNG: A few questions for you.
1. Which model year of corolla? *2008/2009* 2. Did this vehicle come with a/c factory fitted or is the a/c a retrofit? Its retrofited 3. Has the operation of the a/c always resulted in overheating or is this a recent happenstance? *Yes it has for the one month I've had it* 4. Please clarify what you mean by the use of the expression "manual compressor"? *Retrofitted compressor that does not control the fan when it comes on* 5. Is the compressor installed meant for this vehicle or a non-identical transplant? *Non identical transplant* 6. Does the vehicle happen not overheat even if the a/c is on PROVIDED THAT you are in freeway traffic as opposed to stop and go traffic? *The vehicle doesn't overhear at all, if the a/c is not on. No matter the type of traffic* |

BumbleBee007: OP, you should get yourself a 'BRAND NEW' (Not Tokunbor) Radiator and your problems are solved!!! Please, how can I tell a new one from China? What's wrong with the tokunbo and Is the new one cheaper than tokunbo? |

bravolad: Check the wiring system that connects to the fan. It's possible one of the wires is chopped of by rats or heat. You need to take your time to observe this. The mechanic scanned the car and checked all the wiring to the radiator fan. I'll check myself, though. Thanks |

timifakay: Seek out the low and high speed fan relays in the fuse box as well as the direction of air flow. Do you still have thermostat? Whats your car's year of manufacture, mileage and location? Yes it has a thermostat. I just replaced that. Year: 2008 with a 2012 system. Mileage: over 150k It's in Lagos |

honmusa: Prior to this issue, any history of overheating before? I'm not sure, I got the car recently. |

Redstone: Get a double cell radiator for it, it would solve the issue at once.
You can also change your thermostat to one that opens with lower temperatures readings. I guess the one you currently have has a higher temperature reading, so your engines get very hot before the thermostat opens and allow water to run through t he radiator.
So watch out for both the radiator and termostat, make sure you meet a mechanic who knows his job. Thanks, I'll do that, and give feedback on how it goes. Pls how do I know a mechanic that knows his job? |

timifakay: Does your coolant level reduce? Does fan speed increase when AC is turned on? No the coolant level doesn't reduce. I don't allow the car to boil over. Once I notice that it's over heating I turn off the a/c and the temperature returns to normal (i.e. mid way up the gauge) The fan has been set to always be on the highest speed, because the manual compressor doesn't have the sensor to control the fan when the a/c comes on. |

honmusa: How often do you top up your radiator coolant? I check it daily, since we changed coolant and it hasn't reduced. The coolant is still gauged. |

Hi everyone, I'm starting this thread to request help from the nairaland community in troubleshooting the issue I'm having with my car.
I drive a Toyota Corolla, it runs perfectly fine without the a/c on, but when I put on the a/c on a hot afternoon in traffic, the car starts overheating.
My radiator has a single fan, functioning for both the radiator and the condenser
I have visited a mechanic, who scanned the car. He replaced the a/c relay that controls a manual a/c compressor and the engine thermostat. But he left the fan running directly with the ignition because the compressor was not controlling the radiator fan when we put on the a/c.
I have flushed the radiator and steam washed the condenser. Then we refilled the cooling system with red abro anti rust coolant. And bleed the cooling system.
I tested the car in heavy traffic and it still overheats. Please what do I do now?? |
