Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has assured the new local council executives in the state, of his administration’s support to ensure that the 18 local councils are healthy and equipped to deliver quality services to people at the grassroots. Obaseki gave the assurance during the opening ceremony of a 3-day on-boarding programme organised for the newly elected local council executives in Benin City, Edo State. “The state government has effective agencies that can be utilised by the local council administrators to address most of the needs of the councils. The state government is aware that most councils in the state do not have resources internally to plan and execute projects that will benefit the people. I assure you that the state government has adequate resources which can be freely accessed by the local councils,” he said. While urging the new local council executives to improve Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and security in their domain, he maintained that “This administration will not excuse the poor allocation of scarce resources, mismanagement of fund and accumulation of debt for the state government.” Obaseki added, “I will encourage you not to waste scarce resources that will attract debts for the councils. Local government councils do not need to employ people that are not needed as most of the councils are over-staffed.” He advised the council chairmen to make the best of the resources available to them, reside in their councils and develop strategic plans to harness the resources within their respective councils. In his address, the Secretary to the State Government, Osarodion Ogie Esq., said, “The essence of local council executives is to enable governments attend to the welfare and security of the people at the grassroots.” Ogie urged the council executives to align their mandate with the vision of the state government in revamping primary health care and basic education. The Vice Chancellor of Igbinedion University, Okada, Prof. Eghosa Osaghae, said, “The local government is the closest level of government which can be easily identified by the people. Elected council chairmen and councillors should make effort in ensuring effective management of resources at the grassroots.” He urged the council executives to complement the efforts of the state and federal governments in delivering the dividends of democracy to the people. - photo 1 - L-R: Chairman, All Progressives Congress (APC), Edo State chapter, Barr. The Governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obseki, has expressed his appreciation to Edo voters, civil society organisations, the media, security agencies and other stakeholders for the successful conduct of last Saturday’s local council polls in the state. In his message of appreciation on the sideline of the swearing-in of the elected officials, Obaseki noted that “the elections will go down in the annals of history as the most peaceful and most organised elections, devoid of chaos and disorderliness, unlike what we have been used to in this part of the world.” He said: “As a government, we are extremely proud of Edo voters for changing the narrative of how Nigerians participate in elections. For the first time in our recent political history, voting was done in the most civilised manner. He lauded security agencies, traditional rulers, party leaders, members of the civil society and other stakeholders for their roles in setting the stage for the peaceful conduct of the local council polls across the state. “Voters took their time, went to their various polling centers, cast their votes and went home without any troubles. The Edo LG Polls have set a new template for future elections in the country and will go down in the annals of Nigeria’s recent electoral history as the most peaceful and orderly elections in the country. The governor commended the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC) for living up to their word, as “the success of the polls would not have been possible without the effort of the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC). I salute EDSIEC for living up to their word. “I had charged EDSIEC before the local council polls that we wanted a hitch-free exercise devoid of crisis and they promised to do their best and I am happy to report a successful exercise and we are pleased with the outcome of the polls. “I congratulate the elected local government chairmen and councilors who were sworn-in on Monday and urge you to commence work immediately by replicating our ‘Wake and See’ approach to governance at the local councils." He told the elected officials that “Governance is about service delivery. You must feel the pulses of the people, attend to their needs by providing tangible, measurable, verifiable and impactful projects that can improve the lives of our people in the grassroots.”

..Urges Prudent Management of N2b Paris Club Savings Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has sworn-in the newly elected local council chairmen for the 18 local government areas of the state, charging them on prudent management of resources saved up in their treasuries. Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony held at the Government House, in Benin City, Edo State capital, on Monday, Obaseki charged the new heads of the councils to be accountable, responsive and responsible in administering the affairs of their councils. He said, “My administration has kept aside N2 billion saved from the Paris Club refunds in the councils’ treasury for the new executives to commence activities. According to him, “You are not coming to meet an empty treasury. I have saved your Paris refund in excess of N2billion and some of you have savings in excess of N2billion. “So, you will be coming into office with some reserves and savings, but you have to focus on enduring projects.” He said the era, in which council bosses left offices with debts for their successors would not be accepted, noting that his administration has spent the last 17 months offsetting debts incurred by former local government executives. The governor described the peaceful conduct of the electoral process as historical, noting, “The increasing acceptability of the laudable programmes of the All Progressives Congress (APC) enabled you to secure victory at the polls. We do not expect less from you. “Your elections were free and fair, so you must go and serve the people who voted you into office. You have no Godfather to settle. Your sole responsibility must be the welfare of the people in your council,” the governor charged the newly elected executives. The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, who witnessed the swearing-in ceremony, commended Governor Obaseki for saving up funds for the chairmen to kick-start their activities. He described the act as benevolent and urged the council bosses to utilize the fund for the benefit of the masses. In his vote of thanks on behalf of other chairpersons, Mr Jenkins Osunde, Oredo Local Council chairman, thanked people of the state for finding them worthy to pilot their affairs. He assured that they would live up to the confidence reposed in them and build on the foundation already laid by the Godwin Obaseki-led administration. ...As Ogbemudia, only female chairman-elect, says she will not disappoint her people. Governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said that the new helmsmen at the local councils in Edo State will deepen his brand of strategic leadership at the 18 local councils, to ensure that those at the grassroots enjoy result-oriented governance. The governor, who said this during a Thanksgiving Service at the St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Airport Road, Benin City, on Sunday, stressed that the ‘wake and see’ phenomenon of leadership will now be felt by those at the grassroots across the state. Speaking after the service, Obaseki said that the All Progressives Congress (APC) will introduce the same quality of service he is pioneering at the state level, in the local government through the new chairmen and councilors. According to him, “That is why our party, the APC, decided to field candidates we know are very credible, and are people with experience to take charge of the affairs of our local government areas. “So, we are quite excited and happy, and assure the people of Edo State that the new heads at the local governments will render services to the people that will surpass what they have seen before. “We will want to deepen the ‘Wake and See’ concept of programme execution. We want to make sure that the same spirit gets to the local government areas,” he added. Some of the new local government chairpersons who attended the service are Ogbemudia Eghe of Egor Local Government Area (LGA); John Akhigbe of Etsako Central LGA; Destiny Enabulele of Ovia South West LGA; Jenkins Osunde of Oredo LGA and Eric Osayande of Ikpoba Okha LGA. The Parish Priest, Reverend Father, Edwin Omorogbe commended the state government for organising the elections to enable the people choose those to lead them at the local government areas. He expressed appreciation to the governor for spearheading the campaign against human trafficking and illegal migration, noting that the church was worried about the trend and was committed to ensuring that the incidence is brought to a halt. “We are committed to end the scourge of illegal migration. The Archbishop Augustine Akubeze of Benin Archdiocese has thrown his weight behind the governor’s campaign and we are happy he is battling the ugly trend. “At the same time, we appreciate the state for organising the local government elections. The turnout showed that the people are concerned about electing who they see on a daily basis. So, the charge is now for these new heads not to disappoint,” he said. The only female chairperson-elect, Eghe Ogbemudia, said that she wouldn’t disappoint her people for reposing confidence in her and trooping out to vote for her. “I appreciate the people for coming out en mass yesterday. This confidence reposed in me will not go to waste. I promise not to disappoint my people,” she pledged. ...Obaseki casts ballot at Emokpae Primary School , says APC will coast to glory The 2018 local government elections kicked off in several polling units across Edo State on a good footing, with high turnout of voters who were seen casting their ballots to elect new helmsmen at the councils. With the restriction of movement between 7am and 3pm announced yesterday by the state government to ease the voting process across the state, voters were afforded ample opportunity to exercise their franchise. Checks at polling units across the three Senatorial districts in the state revealed that contrary to insinuations that there was going to be voter apathy due to boycott by some opposition parties, the polls recorded large turnout of voters. Governor of Edo State, Mr Godwin Obaseki, cast his vote at Emokpae Primary School Mission at 12:30pm, amid cheers from a mammoth crowd that had gathered at the polling unit. He assured the people that the elections will be free and fair, as all parties are presented equal shots at the elective offices. “The All Progressives Congress (APC) is certain of victory. And I appreciate the huge turnout for the polls. This shows that the electorates are truly committed to seeing the 'wake and see' phenomenon repeated at local council level,” he said. After casting his ballot, the governor toured some voting centers, including Oluha Primary School in Uselu area of Benin, Ologbosere Primary School in Ugbekun area and St Maria Goretti Secondary School to monitor the conduct of the elections. Speaking to journalists on his impression of the LG polls, Obaseki said he was satisfied with the turn out of voters, the high sense of organisation displayed by them and the fact that there were no major incidents at the voting centers. "I commend the electorates for coming out en-mass to cast their votes for their preferred candidates and I also commend the people for abiding by the restriction on movements," he said. Asked if the nonparticipation of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) affected the turn out of voters, the governor noted that to the contrary, "the large turnout of voters across the state shows that Edo people and residents are in support of this election" and assured that his party, the APC will coast to glory in all the 18LGAs of the state. It was gathered that electoral materials were dispersed first to communities in far-flung parts of the state before those close to the city center got the materials, to ensure that the voting process was synchronised. As at 9am, voting had commenced in Ugbekun Primary School in Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area, as it was observed that accreditation and voting took place simultaneously. One of the voters, who doesn’t want her name in print, said that the process has been peaceful and that the materials arrived early at the polling unit. She commended the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC) for the seamless coordination of the process. “I just cast my vote and it was quite seamless. This is quite commendable. EDSIEC did a good job with easing up the voting process by allowing for simultaneous accreditation and voting. “The roads are clear, as everyone is gearing to vote. We are the early birds here now. More people are coming in to participate in the pools,” she said. At Okpokhumi Primary School, Ward 2, Owan East Local Government, voting materials arrived at about 10am, after which accreditation of voters commenced. Security operatives on ground to ensure law and order, were also seen at the ward. Electoral observers were also present, as voters trooped in steadily. The voters who arrived the polling units in the area well ahead of time, were visibly anxious to cast their votes, noting that the early arrival of electoral materials was quite commendable “This is quite seamless, I must confess. The conduct of the officials since the arrival of the electoral materials shows that we are in for a serious business. You can see that people are still trooping in to cast their votes.,” one of them said. The Governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has reassured Edo people that a major focus of his administration is to expand the economy of the state and improve the socio-economic status of the people. Obaseki said this while receiving members of Great Benin Vanguard, who paid him a courtesy visit in Government House, Benin City. He added that his administration was also committed to consolidating on the political and social stability of the state. “As a governor, I have the responsibility to protect everybody who lives in Edo State and their properties,” he said, and appealed to the various ethnic groups in the state to give peace a chance for the overall progress and development of the state. He stressed that he would never be a party to any decision that will lead to anarchy or detrimental to the wellbeing of Edo people, who he swore to protect. He said his administration was laying the foundation for a greater Edo State and urged his guests not to be distracted by trivialities, noting that his government has been engaging stakeholders at various levels to ensure that there is harmony among the various ethnic groups in the state. The governor said one of such engagements was his recent trip to Bayelsa State where he had audience with Governor Seriake Dickson, of the state, over the issue. He noted that his Deputy, Comrade Philip Shaibu has equally been visiting some neighbouring states like Kogi and Ondo, where there are disputes and assured that those issues will soon be resolved in line with the provisions of the law. Earlier, chairman of the Great Benin Vanguard, Professor Ovenseri Aibueku, expressed displeasure over what he called an attempt to distort history by some people. “Our kingdom is known for its hospitality, which has been attracting settlers to our much cherished Benin Kingdom. However, it is dismaying to read newspaper publications where some Ijaws gave conditions for peace in the state.” Prof. Aibueku told the governor that some boundary communities in Benin Kingdom were under the threat of losing their lands and called on him to reinvigorate the state boundary commission to address the issue. He assured the governor of the continued support of the Benin Vanguard to the government of Edo State. - PHOTO 1 - Chairman, Great Benin Vanguard, Professor Ovenseri Aibueku, presenting a position paper to Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, during the group’s courtesy visit to the governor at the Government House, Benin City.

Dr. Cairo Ojuogboh; and Deputy Governor, Ondo State, Mr. Agboola Ajayi, among others. In his remarks, Governor Godwin Obaseki, said that the APC intends to change the face of local government administration by fielding candidates who do not only possess integrity but are going to be bringing varied expertise as experienced professionals. According to him, “Today, we are making history. I am not sure there is any state in Nigeria that wraps up a campaign for local government elections with such a Mega Rally. The men and women we have put forward are people of integrity. Some of them have doctorate degrees while others have worked for many organisations.” Noting that he intends to distil his brand of politics to the local government areas in the state, Obaseki said, “They are going to move the wake and see mantra to the local governments. We want to show that Nigeria is an APC country and that Edo is an APC state. We want to assure the President that he has 1.2m votes from Edo State in the presidential elections. We want to assure Edo people that after Saturday elections, they will have 'wake and see' councillors and local government area chairmen.” National Chairman of APC, Chief Odigie-Oyegun, said that the APC is not a party that takes people for granted and is not a party for cowards, noting, “We welcome leaders from the opposition, who have joined from the different local government areas. We are very sure that we are going to have 18 local government chairmen after these elections.” Stressing that the convincing leadership provided by Governor Obaseki and his predecessor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has set the stage for progress, he said, “I congratulate the governor in Edo State; he is a silent worker. I also want to congratulate the man who laid the foundation, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.” Minister of Youth and Sports, Barr. Solomon Dalung, said that the convincing work done by the APC in the state has endeared the people to the party, noting, “for the first time, the PDP saw defeat coming and abandoned the war. I congratulate former Governor of the state, Adams Oshiomhole. He laid the foundation for the revolutionary politics in Edo State. He gave them a deafening blow and now they have surrendered.” Former governor, Comrade Oshiomhole said he was extremely proud of Governor Obaseki for how he has taken the baton and continued to show progressive leadership. According to him, “Ten years ago, we promised to eradicate Godfatherism in politics in Edo State. That was why we launched the one-man-one-vote campaign. And it is interesting to witness in our lifetime that the PDP has surrendered even without a punch.” -photo 1- L-R: Former Governor, Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole; National Chairman, All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun; Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki; Minister of Youth and Sports, Barr.
