Satellite TV TechnologyCNG Vs Petrol Generators In Nigeria: Which One Saves You More Money? by Ejesgist(op): 4:23pm On Jun 27, 2025
With fuel prices soaring, Nigerians are turning to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) generators. But are they truly cheaper than petrol?
As Nigerians continue to grapple with rising energy costs and unstable power supply, many are exploring alternative fuel options for power generation. Among the leading options are Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Petrol generators.

TJ News Nigeria reports that following the removal of petrol subsidies and the fluctuating price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), the cost-efficiency of running a generator has become a major concern for households and businesses alike.

🔍 What Is a CNG Generator?
A CNG generator runs on Compressed Natural Gas, a cleaner-burning and increasingly available fuel in Nigeria. It can either be a dedicated CNG generator or a dual-fuel generator that switches between CNG and petrol.

With the federal government actively promoting CNG adoption through tax incentives and conversion programmes, interest in this option is rapidly growing.

⚖️ CNG vs Petrol: Cost Comparison
🔹 Fuel Price (2025 Average)
Fuel Type Price per litre/kg Average Generator Consumption (per hour) Hourly Cost
Petrol ₦925 – ₦960/L 1 – 1.2 litres ₦925 – ₦1,150
CNG ₦180 – ₦220/kg 0.5 – 0.6 kg ₦90 – ₦132

TJ News Nigeria learnt that running a generator on CNG can cut fuel expenses by over 60%, especially for users who operate generators for long hours.

🧰 Conversion Costs: Is Switching Affordable?
To use CNG, most petrol generators must be converted using a CNG retrofit kit. Here's what the average conversion costs look like:

Conversion Kit: ₦60,000 – ₦150,000 (depending on generator size)

Installation Fee: ₦10,000 – ₦30,000

CNG Cylinder & Accessories: ₦80,000 – ₦120,000

Total Initial Cost: ₦150,000 – ₦300,000

While this may seem steep, experts say the payback period is 3 to 6 months for users who run generators daily for 6+ hours.

🧪 Maintenance and Safety
✅ CNG Generators
Burn cleaner: less carbon buildup

Longer engine life

Require proper ventilation and cylinder handling

⚠️ Petrol Generators
Higher emissions

Risk of fire or spillage

Frequent engine servicing

According to energy technicians, CNG generators require fewer oil changes and have lower long-term maintenance costs.

🌱 Environmental Benefits
CNG emits:

90% less carbon monoxide

80% fewer unburned hydrocarbons

Less noise pollution

This makes it a preferred option for schools, hospitals, and homes with children or elderly residents.

🔌 Power Output: Is There a Difference?
CNG may deliver slightly lower power output (5–10% less) compared to petrol. However, this is negligible in most residential or SME settings.

📍 Where to Get CNG in Nigeria?
CNG is increasingly available in:

Lagos

Abuja

Ogun

Edo

Rivers

Kaduna

New refilling points are being rolled out under the Presidential CNG Initiative, with expansion plans for 2025–2026.

🧾 Summary Table: CNG vs Petrol Generator
Feature Petrol Generator CNG Generator
Fuel Cost (Hourly) ₦925 – ₦1,150 ₦90 – ₦132
Maintenance Cost High Low
Emissions High (CO, HC, soot) Low (clean-burning)
Initial Setup Cost Low Moderate (₦150k–₦300k)
Long-term Savings Low High
Power Output Full ~90–95% of petrol power
Availability (2025) Nationwide Growing but regional

📣 What Experts Are Saying
“The long-term fuel savings on CNG generators far outweigh the initial cost of conversion, especially for homes and SMEs relying on generators daily,” said a Lagos-based energy consultant.

“If you’re looking to cut fuel bills and extend the life of your generator, CNG is the future,” another technician told TJ News Nigeria.

🧠 Final Verdict: Which Is Cheaper to Run?
Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) generators are significantly cheaper to run than petrol generators in Nigeria, especially for high-usage households and businesses.

Although the upfront cost of conversion may be high, users typically recover their investment within months and benefit from long-term savings, cleaner energy, and less frequent maintenance.

PoliticsOwo Gunmen Attack: Akeredolu Begins Construction Of Memorial Park For Victims by Ejesgist(op): 10:10pm On Mar 11, 2023
Nine months after terrorists attacked a Catholic church in Owo, Ondo State, the governor of the state, Mr Rotimi Akeredolu, has begun construction of a memorial park in honour of the victims of the attack.

The PUNCH reports that 41 people lost their lives while many sustained various degrees of injuries in the deadly attack at St Francis Catholic Church. However, no arrest has been made after the incident.

Speaking during an inspection visit to the construction site on Saturday, the governor said the memorial park would be a beauty to behold when completed.

He said his administration was determined not to forget the souls that have departed as a result of the incident , noting that the President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, who had visited Owo to commiserate with the state and the people after the incident, would be invited to inaugurate the project when completed.

Akeredolu said, ”The architect who designed this place, Architect Femi Bello, the Odopetu of Akure Kingdom, I want to thank him very well because he showed interest in this project. His interest is beyond normal, so I thank you.

“By the time we finish this memorial park, it will be a beauty to behold and it is going to measure up to any memorial park anywhere because the architect, has taken his time to do so many good work here. It is for us to just wait and see it.

“Come rain, come sunshine, this project must be completed before the end of May. When this incident (attack) happened, our president-elect was here. I know that by the time we tell him we have this memorial park for him to come and inaugurate it, I think it will be a joy to him. That will be just a week after his inauguration, I pray he will come so that he can see this memorial park.

“For us, we are determined not to forget the souls that have departed. They were 41 in number. And others that are still nursing the wounds, although they have gone back to their homes, they have been discharged, some of them are outpatients.

“As you know, we also have a lady whose two legs were amputated. The government has provided for her necessary prosthesis that she can use. I’m told that she has been able to use it. Her rehabilitation is moving on well, and we are sure that she will still live a normal life. That is what I believe, she will live a normal life. So, for us, it is just a way of remembering those 41 souls that died.”

In his remarks, the state commissioner for infrastructure, land and housing, Raimi Aminu commended Akeredolu for not forgetting the departed souls, expressing assurance that the befitting memorial park will be completed before the end of May this year.

“Government has decided to site, at this location befitting Memorial Park in remembrance of those departed souls. It is going to be a befitting one, well drawn, and which can compete with others throughout the world,” he said

Aminu added that apart from that, government also has intension of siting so many things like museum and other things around this area. So, this is going to be a centre of attraction after completion, and it will beautify the city, and at the same time, those people who lost their lives will be remembered for life

All things being equal, by God’s grace, this project will be completed before the end of May 2023, Aminu assured
