This is a list of ten of the most abused drugs and the effects they have on people. 10 Heroin Heroin is processed directly from the extracts of the opium poppy. It was originally created to help cure people of addiction to morphine. Upon crossing the blood-brain barrier, which occurs soon after introduction of the drug into the bloodstream, heroin is converted into morphine, which mimics the action of endorphins, creating a sense of well-being; the characteristic euphoria has been described as an “orgasm” centered in the gut. One of the most common methods of heroin use is via intravenous injection. 9 Cocaine Cocaine is a crystalline tropane alkaloid that is obtained from the leaves of the coca plant. It is both a stimulant of the central nervous system and an appetite suppressant, giving rise to what has been described as a euphoric sense of happiness and increased energy. It is most often used recreationally for this effect. Cocaine is a potent central nervous system stimulant. Its effects can last from 20 minutes to several hours, depending upon the dosage of cocaine taken, purity, and method of administration. The initial signs of stimulation are hyperactivity, restlessness, increased blood pressure, increased heart rate and euphoria. The euphoria is sometimes followed by feelings of discomfort and depression and a craving to experience the drug again. Sexual interest and pleasure can be amplified. Side effects can include twitching, paranoia, and impotence, which usually increases with frequent usage. One of the best treatment for drug addiction is to consult with cocaine rehab centers for recovery. 8 Methamphetamine Methamphetamime, popularly shortened to meth or ice, is a psychostimulant and sympathomimetic drug. Methamphetamine enters the brain and triggers a cascading release of norepinephrine, dopamine and serotonin. Since it stimulates the mesolimbic reward pathway, causing euphoria and excitement, it is prone to abuse and addiction. Users may become obsessed or perform repetitive tasks such as cleaning, hand-washing, or assembling and disassembling objects. Withdrawal is characterized by excessive sleeping, eating and depression-like symptoms, often accompanied by anxiety and drug-craving. 7 Crack Cocaine Crack cocaine, often nicknamed “crack”, is believed to have been created and made popular during the early 1980s . Because of the dangers for manufacturers of using ether to produce pure freebase cocaine, producers began to omit the step of removing the freebase precipitate from the ammonia mixture. Typically, filtration processes are also omitted. Baking soda is now most often used as a base rather than ammonia for reasons of lowered odor and toxicity; however, any weak base can be used to make crack cocaine. When commonly “cooked” the ratio is 1:1 to 2:3 parts cocaine/bicarbonate. 6 LSD Lysergic acid diethylamide, LSD, LSD-25, or acid, is a semisynthetic psychedelic drug of the tryptamine family. Arguably the most regarded of all psychedelics, it is considered mainly as a recreational drug, an entheogen, and a tool in use to supplement various types of exercises for transcendence including in meditation, psychonautics, and illegal psychedelic psychotherapy whether self administered or not. LSD’s psychological effects (colloquially called a “trip”) vary greatly from person to person, depending on factors such as previous experiences, state of mind and environment, as well as dose strength. They also vary from one trip to another, and even as time passes during a single trip. An LSD trip can have long term psychoemotional effects; some users cite the LSD experience as causing significant changes in their personality and life perspective. Widely different effects emerge based on what Leary called set and setting; the “set” being the general mindset of the user, and the “setting” being the physical and social environment in which the drug’s effects are experienced. 5 Ecstasy Ecstasy (MDMA) is a semisynthetic psychedelic entactogen of the phenethylamine family that is much less visual with more stimulant like effects than most all other common “trip” producing psychedelics. It is considered mainly a recreational drug that’s often used with sex and associated with club drugs, as an entheogen, and a tool in use to supplement various types of practices for transcendence including in meditation, psychonautics, and illicit psychedelic psychotherapy whether self administered or not. The primary effects of MDMA include an increased awareness of the senses, feelings of openness, euphoria, empathy, love, happiness, heightened self-awareness, feeling of mental clarity and an increased appreciation of music and movement. Tactile sensations are enhanced for some users, making physical contact with others more pleasurable. Other side effects, such as jaw clenching and elevated pulse, are common. 4 Opium Opium is a resinous narcotic formed from the latex released by lacerating (or “scoring”) the immature seed pods of opium poppies (Papaver somniferum). It contains up to 16% morphine, an opiate alkaloid, which is most frequently processed chemically to produce heroin for the illegal drug trade. Opium has gradually been superseded by a variety of purified, semi-synthetic, and synthetic opioids with progressively stronger effect, and by other general anesthesia. This process began in 1817, when Friedrich Wilhelm Adam Sertürner reported the isolation of pure morphine from opium after at least thirteen years of research and a nearly disastrous trial on himself and three boys. 3 Marijuana(Igbo) This one is so popular in Nigeria. It is relatively cheap and easy to get.Cannabis, known as marijuana in its herbal form, is a psychoactive product of the plant Cannabis sativa. Humans have been consuming cannabis since prehistory, although in the 20th century there was a rise in its use for recreational, religious or spiritual, and medicinal purposes. It is estimated that about four percent of the world’s adult population use cannabis annually. It has psychoactive and physiological effects when consumed, usually by smoking or ingestion. The minimum amount of THC required to have a perceptible psychoactive effect is about 10 micrograms per kilogram of body weight. The state of intoxication due to cannabis consumption is colloquially known as a “high”; it is the state where mental and physical facilities are noticeably altered due to the consumption of cannabis. Each user experiences a different high, and the nature of it may vary upon factors such as potency, dose, chemical composition, method of consumption and set and setting. 2 Psilocybin Mushrooms Psilocybin mushrooms (also called psilocybian mushrooms) are fungi that contain the psychedelic substances psilocybin and psilocin, and occasionally other psychoactive tryptamines. There are multiple colloquial terms for psilocybin mushrooms, the most common being magic mushrooms or ‘shrooms. When psilocybin is ingested, it is broken down to produce psilocin, which is responsible for the hallucinogenic effects. The intoxicating effects of psilocybin-containing mushrooms typically last anywhere from 3 to 7 hours depending on dosage, preparation method and personal metabolism. The experience is typically inwardly oriented, with strong visual and auditory components. Visions and revelations may be experienced, and the effect can range from exhilarating to distressing. There can be also a total absence of effects, even with large doses. 1 PCP PCP (Phencyclidine) is a dissociative drug formerly used as an anesthetic agent, exhibiting hallucinogenic and neurotoxic effects. It is commonly known as Angel Dust, but is also known as Wet, Sherm, Sherman Hemsley, Rocket Fuel, Ashy Larry, Shermans Tank, Wack, Halk Hogan, Ozone, HannaH, Hog, Manitoba Shlimbo, and Embalming Fluid, among other names. Although the primary psychoactive effects of the drug only last hours, total elimination from the body is prolonged, typically extending over weeks. PCP is consumed in a recreational manner by drug users, mainly in the United States, where the demand is met by illegal production. It comes in both powder and liquid forms (PCP base dissolved most often in ether), but typically it is sprayed onto leafy material such as marijuana, mint, oregano, parsley or Ginger Leaves, and smoked. PCP has potent effects on the nervous system altering perceptual functions (hallucinations, delusional ideas, delirium or confused thinking), motor functions (unsteady gait, loss of coordination, and disrupted eye movement or nystagmus), and autonomic nervous system regulation (rapid heart rate, altered temperature regulation). The drug has been known to alter mood states in an unpredictable fashion causing some individuals to become detached and others to become animated. |
Yesterday, I was watching a movie when my mum came to the house and joined. This movie is not an X- rated movie. But along the line, a simulated sex scene was shown and that part took a longer time than I expected. The part was explicit a bit. I felt a little uncomfortable and embarrassed but could not muster courage to go and put off or change the movie. I was just silent I want to know how you feel if you were in my shoes or the best thing to do in such situation.

Your favorite artist’s music changes your life, and you get the chance to tell them that. For most, it’s an imaginary scenario. But one fan had that unexpected opportunity during Kendrick Lamar’s set at the opening night of this year’s Sweetlife Festival on Saturday. “I’m at the end of the show, and I see this young lady crying, and I’m thinking, She must be really going through something right now,” Kendrick explained to MTV News after the show. “Then I start hearing her murmur with her lips, ‘You saved my life.’ So I’m like, Damn. This is serious. This is not for play, why she’s out here right now. She came to see the person that actually helped her get through a life, through music.” “Then she said, ’I was gonna kill myself last year.’ So I said, at that point, I gotta bring her up onstage and show her some love and let her know this is real.” He did just that, as security helped her make her way onto the stage, where she broke down as the two shared a touching embrace. “When I was 15, I was diagnosed with severe depression, and Kendrick got me through it,” Claire, who’s now 16, told MTV News, bravely opening up about her personal struggles (Due to sensitive nature of the subject, we’re only using her first name for this story). “And I couldn’t have done it without him. I listened to his music over and over and there were nights where I thought I was going to end it all, and I didn’t, and I think that’s because his words impacted me in a way that no other artist has ever done. I can’t thank him enough. I can’t thank the people behind him enough for making him come to the earbuds that I listen to. I feel inseparable from his music.” She didn’t think she’d ever be able to actually thank him, though. Until Saturday. “He saw me crying, he tried to touch me, he couldn’t reach, and then he just said to the security guard, ‘Bring her up.’ And I lost it.” Kendrick is typically soft-spoken and reserved in person, yet uses his music to open up with an unwavering honesty about his personal life, feelings and experiences. This has been the case for years, but he took his willingness to share self-reflection to a new level on To love-vendor A Butterfly’s “u,” where he emotively raps about his “suicidal weakness” and negative thoughts he had about himself. He later follows that up — and balances it out — with the self-love anthem, “i.” Not many are willing to share stories of a bout with depression in such a public way, and when someone with Kendrick’s megaphone decides to, it has the powerful potential to directly help others. The evidence was apparent Saturday night. “I told him I was gonna kill myself, and I think his music was the main reason that I didn’t,” Claire said. “Because I had myself — and my music.” In that moment, the rapper became not Kendrick Lamar, 27-year-old music superstar, but Kendrick Lamar Duckworth, 27-year-old son, brother, friend and young adult trying to navigate life’s highs and lows just like the rest of us. “[I wanted to] bring her backstage and let her tell her story,” he added — which is what he did after the show. “Let her know, it’s more than just me bringing you onstage — I actually feel you. Because that’s why I do my music.” “And every time I see something like that, it reminds me why I do what I do. It was just crazy. She came back here, we signed some stuff for her, talked to her for a little bit, and told her to keep going. Though he’s had fans approach him with similar messages in the past, the gravity and importance of what they tell him consistently hits home. “It’s new every time to me,” he said. “When other people see it, they know how powerful it really is… that people actually wholeheartedly hold your music to a standard where they feel like they need it.” For Claire, the chance meet and thank K. Dot for helping her through those times of need couldn’t have been scripted any better. “He was exactly as I ever imagined meeting him ever would be, and I never thought I really would, but I guess miracles happen,” she said. “I think the main reason I wanted to meet him was to thank him. Because he should know his music has the power to impact a person’s entire existence. Someone should know that they’ve done something like that.” http://www.mtv.com/news/2173432/kendrick-lamar-fan-crying-sweetlife-festival/

An operation that lasted for 9 hours led to the first successful penis transplant in the World. It was led by team of surgeons in South Africa. Surprisingly, this operation was carried out last year( December 11, 2014) but it was kept undisclosed to the public in order to see how the patient recovers. Normally, it takes up to two years for the patient to recover. But he unexpectedly recovered so early. He is said to have regained sexual, urinary and reproductive capabilities. The hospital, Stellenbosch University and Tygerberg Hospital in. Cape Town did not give the name of the patient. The only information available on the patient is that he is a 21 year old who lost his penis when he suffered severe complications from circumcision. His penis was therefore amputated to save his life. Many South Africa men has witnessed increased health dangers and complications resulting from mistakes in circumcision. An estimated 500 people have died since 2006 from circumcision alone in the Eastern Cape province. Generally, about 250 penis amputations are done yearly in South Africa to save men who suffers from complications resulting from circumcision http://www.myhealthokay.com/2015/03/a-first-penis-transplant-done-in-south-africa.html?m=1 |
Breast milk is very important for a newborn. It is considered the most balanced foods available for normal newborns and infants. Breast milk is sterile, easily digested, and nonallergenic. It contains maternal antibodies that protect against many early childhood illnesses and lipids that stimulate early brain development. A New Research has shown that breast milk has tremendous short and long time effect on the child development up till adulthood. The study, in the April issue of Lancet Global Health, began in 1982 with 5,914 newborns. Then 3,493 of the original group of newborns were interviewed thirty years later. It was discovered that people who breastfed for 12 months or more have higher I.Q scores, more educational performances and years. Those who breastfed for a month or less are not so lucky. Other factors such as maternal education and smoking, family income, birth weight were also considered. However the author Bernardo Lessa Horta, (associate professor at the Federal University of Pelotas in Brazil) added “It isn’t only breast-feeding that affects I.Q. and income. But our study does show that breast-feeding is important and should be encouraged.” http://www.myhealthokay.com/2015/03/breasfeed-benefit-on-IQ-level.html?m=1 |

Have you ever felt a burning sensation in your stomach after a meal? It might not be unconnected with acidity. When the food we eat enters the stomach, the gastric glands in the stomach produce digestive acid that helps digest the food. best treatment for acidity of stomach When there is imbalance or excesses of this acid, acidity occurs. Acidity leads to heart burns and ulcers. Hear burn occurs when the acid enters the lower oesephagus( gastro oesephagal reflux). This is due to weakness in the sphincter controlling the reflux. It occurs after meals and is brought on by excess intra-abdominal pressure like lifting weights or straining. It can also occur at night on lying down and is relieved when the individual sits up. The pain is very closely related to posture. Regurgitation of the gastric contents may also occur. Possible Causes Research shows that acidity increases in people who are nervous, people in developed countries, consumption of Alcohol, highly spicy foodstuffs, non-vegetarian diets, and Non Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAID's) such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen People who smoke a lot also experience heart burn. Stress have a big impact on acidity. Diets high in salt, spices should be avoided. Cure There are many drugs available to treat heart burn. Care must be taken and Doctor's advice should be sought before taking any medication for our health. Such drugs are 1. Cimetidine , Ranitidine, Famotidine or Nizatidine( These groups of drugs reduce acid secretion. They are called H2 receptor blocker) 2. Antacids such as aluminum hydroxide and magnesium oxide. 3. Omeprazole and Lansoprazole.( they are more powerful because they stop acid production. They are called proton pump inhibitors) Apart from medication, healthy lifestyle, less stress, alcohol, and consumption of water regularly could help alleviate stomach symptoms by helping flush out excess acid from the stomach Avoid chocolate bars and caffeinated drinks. http://www.myhealthokay.com/2015/02/treat-heart-burn-stomach-acidity.html?m=0 |

What is Angina? Angina is a heart condition characterized by pain or discomfort in the chest that results from plaque buildup in the arteries causing reduced blood flow to the heart. “With angina, the pain can be mild, so just because a woman doesn’t feel like she is having a traditional heart attack doesn’t mean that she should ignore chest discomfort,” said Anita Varkey, MD. Other symptoms of angina include chest pressure, discomfort in the jaw, neck or left arm, nausea, dizziness and shortness of breath. Symptoms typically result from physical exertion. While age is a risk factor for angina that can’t be controlled, there are steps women can take to prevent this condition. 1. Be proactive about your health. Don’t delay seeing your doctor if you experience symptoms of angina. Dr. Varkey suggests seeking medical attention if you have chest pain that lasts for 15 minutes or more and doesn’t subside with an antacid. 2. Opt for fresh or frozen vegetables. This will help to reduce blood pressure by lowering sodium intake. If you must eat canned goods, make sure you rinse them first to remove some of the salt. 3.Avoid white foods. Eliminate added sugars and white rice, bread and pasta from your diet to control your blood sugar. 4. Avoid red meat and dairy products, which contain saturated fats, and skip processed foods that contain trans-fats. Opt for the Mediterranean diet, which has been found to help reduce blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar. Mediterranean diet include proportionally high consumption of olive oil, legumes, unrefined cereals , fruits, and vegetables , moderate to high consumption of fish, moderate consumption of dairy products (mostly as cheese and yogurt), moderate wine consumption, and low consumption of meat and meat products (Wikipedia) 5. Maintain a healthy weight. An optimal weight will prevent the heart from having to work harder to pump blood throughout the body. 6. Spend more time in motion. The American Heart Association recommends 30 minutes of moderate exercise fives days a week. If this seems overwhelming, break it into two, 15-minute increments five days a week. 7. Kick the habit the non-traditional way. If you have tried all traditional methods to quit smoking, opt for acupuncture or hypnosis. www.myhealthokay.com/2015/02/valentine-gift-care-your-heart.html?m=1 |

I felt I could share this piece with you about the state of bread manufacturing in Nigeria. Unhygienic Practices It seems NAFDAC that are supposed to protect the health of the citizens are not doing much in terms of regulating the standard of manufactured goods. Most Nigeria bakeries lack Standard equipment like Flour Mixer and so they divert to unusual means in flour mixing. Some use their hands or feet to do the mixing, endangering the health of the public. The untidy environment in which the bread are produced also speaks of the pathetic state of the industry NAFDAC Cerification Of course, theoretically every industry in Nigeria that manufacture food, drugs, cosmetics and other consumer goods must be certified by NAFDAC. In practice, this is far from what is obtainable. Most bread industries are not yet registered for years and they keep selling. Some of them manage to put labels suggesting that they are yet registered like NAFDAC REG NO:........ (yet to be registered)But for years they keep manufacturing without getting registered. And yet the poor consumers suffer from the nonchalance of greedy producers. Potassium Bromate Most countries have banned the use of this chemical additive in manufacturing. It is used in flour to improve the gluten. This gluten gives dough elasticity helping the dough to rise. That is why some bread is so big after manufacturing. Atimes, the potassium bromate persist in the consumed bread. Although this chemical help industries to make their profits because of increased production, it has been found to be potentially harmful to consumer According to Livestrong, "The International Agency for Research on Cancer, or IARC, labeled potassium bromate as a category 2B carcinogen. The IARC is a research organization associated with the World Health Organization. It tests substances that may cause cancer, called carcinogens, and puts them into one of five categories. Class 1 contains known human carcinogens and class 2A includes substances that are probable human carcinogens. Class 2B, which includes potassium bromate, indicates it is a possible human carcinogen. Category 2B is used for substances that have caused cancer in laboratory animals but that have limited evidence of causing cancer in humans. http://www.myhealthokay.com/2015/02/many-nigeria-bread-not-safe.html?m=1 |
