Christy Essien Igbokwe’s 58th Birthday

Born in Akwa Ibom state on this day in 1960, Christy Essien-Igbokwe was an actress and singer known as “Nigeria’s Lady of Songs.” Fluent in her native language of Ibibo, Essien-Igbokwe also spoke and sang in English, Yoruba, and Igbo giving her music a broad appeal across cultural and tribal lines.

Among her many popular releases, the inspirational record “Seun Rere” became a rallying cry within Nigeria.

“My childhood was very challenging,” she once recalled. “I used to have a brother who was a soldier then. He was always on transfer owing to the nature of his job.” Orphaned at an early age, Essien-Igbokwe’s love of music inspired her to persevere. “I didn’t know I could sing until I found myself doing so,” the great artist recalled of her experience being caught up in the spirit of music. “I was like an abandoned child, my condition made me discover myself.”

From humble beginnings to singing in clubs, she landed an appearance on a televised talent show, which led to a role on the popular TV show The New Masquerade. Essien-Igbokwe released her first record, Freedom, at age 17 and never looked back. Her 1981 album Ever Liked My Person became a smash hit. In 1987 the Akwa-Ibom artist recorded a song, “Akwa Ibom Mmi,” which became an anthem of pride for those sharing her heritage.

Using her fame to highlight social issues, she appeared in the Hollywood films Flesh and Blood and Scars of Womanhood, which addressed the abuse of women and children.

In 1981 Essien-Igbokwe helped establish the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria with renowned artists King Sunny Adé and Sonny Okosun, becoming the organization’s first female president in 1996. She was also a staunch supporter and advocate for the Performing and Mechanical Rights Society, often donating her own royalties to health and education programs benefiting women and children as well as the handicapped.

Using the same music that uplifted her to uplift her people, Essien-Igbokwe would go on to perform at 2009’s Inspire Africa Benefit Concert and received many awards in her lifetime in recognition of her contributions as an artist and humanitarian.

No street view was available in almost the whole North Eastern region, too bad. Lagos is the only city in Nigeria with at least 60% coverage on Google earth. I navigated my way through Lagos and was surprised to discover that Lagos is very overrated especially Ikoyi. I was thinking I will see something similar to Dubai. No street view of Banana Island was available, reason best known to Google. Abuja and Port Harcourt has very limited coverage on Google Earth, this guys should hire me let me do the coverage for them. Bored with Nigeria wahala I flew to California…

Arriving in California, I was jumping excitedly from street to street like spiderman, I’m sure in real life I would be arrested for loitering. I entered Silicon Valley, everywhere looks so neat, cars are well parked, beautiful flowers, trees, just like heaven. The roads are superb. Then I flew to New Jersey, pot holes on some of the streets, dirty electrical wires everywhere on electric poles like cobwebs. I was amazed that they have such things in USA. A whole America, probably their own NEPA will also be disconnecting wire too



Final thoughts.

The fact that Nigeria has a very limited coverage on Google Earth, less than 5% is a big shame in this era where smartphones with camera is everywhere. I really commend Lagos, even Ikorodu and other Ghetto in Lagos has full street view coverage. It can be a source of employment to the youth to just go round major cities and take pictures of the streets and send to Google. I didn’t know Ghana is so beautiful until now, Capetown South Africa is like heaven, no wonder our Nigerian brothers there don’t like coming home, Lol. Google Earth has a search option where you’ll just enter the name of the street and voom, Google will fly you straight to that street anywhere in the world. I encourage everyone to use Google Earth, it’s a lovely experience. You don’t need to have visa to visit that city you’ve always wanted to visit.

Those of you who did FRSC physical screening at 82 division Enugu will agree with me that applying for federal government jobs without knowing anyone at the helm of affairs is a WASTE OF RESOURCES, WASTE OF ENERGY AND WASTE OF TIME.

In the entire country, 4600 people will be employed and the possition I applied for is officer cadre and from a reliable source, only 400 people will be taken for that position.

Now let's do a little mathematics.
In my screening center alone, we were over 4000 BSc holders that applied for officer cadre.

Remember 400 is needed in the entire country for the position of officer cadre.
400/37 is approximately 11

It means that only 11 people out of over 4000 applicants will be chosen from Enugu state.

Out of the 11 people, how many politicians have slots? But let assume its strictly based on merit.
11/4000 x 100 = 0.275%
Which means anyone that applied stands a 0.275% chance of getting the job and 99.725% chance of not getting the job.

My question is now, why wasting money buying white shoes, white shorts and polo and spending on transport and food when you know your chances of getting the job is just 0.275%?

I will never ever ever apply for anything federal government job again unless I have a strong connection I rather channel that energy, time and Resources in something productive.
I also implore jobless graduates to start something that brings money, atleast from there you grow higher and higher while waiting for your dream job because indeed these people (politicians) don't mean well for the youths in this country

But this company my friend works with comes with a pension fund account.

And dividend paid every six months because he's a full staff. Including the HMO care.
The company pays for lunch monthly plus monthly provisions package.
This guy saves up 100,000 every month.

His company is not far from his house.
He lives in the best area in Lagos
If he saves 100k three times, he can afford to pay his house rent in a year.
