Those blaming President Tinubu for every hardship in Nigeria today are like people blaming the doctor for the cancer he diagnosed on the first day of treatment.

By May 29, 2023, Nigeria’s economy was already badly damaged. The country was running on expensive fuel subsidy, multiple exchange rates, weak revenue, heavy debt-service pressure, high inflation, oil theft, low investor confidence and a Central Bank that had been used to fund government deficits through Ways and Means.

The IMF had warned before Tinubu’s inauguration that Nigeria’s fuel subsidy should be permanently removed by mid-2023 and that the country’s multiple exchange-rate system was a major source of vulnerability. It also called for reforms in tax compliance, customs, oil theft and revenue mobilisation.

In simple terms, Nigeria was living like a man borrowing money to buy painkillers while refusing to treat the disease.

Fuel subsidy alone was bleeding public finance. The World Bank later estimated that subsidy removal would save about ₦2 trillion in 2023 and over ₦11 trillion by the end of 2025. That means the old system was not free; it was a hidden debt machine.

So when Tinubu came in and removed subsidy, unified FX windows and began revenue reforms, he did not create the crisis. He removed the plaster covering the wound.

Yes, the treatment has been painful. Inflation, transport costs and food prices have hit ordinary Nigerians hard. Government must do more to cushion the vulnerable and convert macro reforms into household relief.

But let nobody rewrite history.

Tinubu inherited a patient already collapsing from years of economic deception. Subsidy was not prosperity. Multiple exchange rates were not stability. Borrowing to consume was not growth.

The real debate is not whether Nigeria was comfortable before Tinubu.

The real debate is whether we should return to the old painkiller politics or continue the painful surgery needed to save the patient.

Hamas dissolves Gaza government in symbolic move ahead of eventual transfer of power to NCAG

The Hamas government in Gaza has announced the resignation of the so-called “Emergency Committee” — the Hamas-led administration that governs the Strip — in preparation for the transfer of authority to the technocratic National Committee for the Administration of Gaza.

The Hamas government says in its announcement that all civil servants will continue providing services as usual, describing them as “public employees who are ready to work under the responsibility of the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG).” Hamas also says it has completed all the administrative steps necessary to transfer authority.

The move is largely symbolic and has little practical effect. It appears intended to demonstrate that the terror group is willing to hand over the administration of the Gaza Strip to the National Committee, in line with US President Donald Trump’s 20-point plan for Gaza.

Christian leaders in southern Lebanon have approached the IDF with an unusual request: that Israel annex their villages and grant residents Israeli citizenship, according to a Channel 14 report.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun defended the framework agreement with Israel during a meeting with several journalists, saying that those opposing the move must offer an alternative that can bring Lebanon out of war, Al-Jadeed reported on Sunday.

“I am telling you that I am not in love with Israel, but give me another solution, whatever it may be,” Aoun said, according to the Lebanese television network. “I am telling those who oppose this framework that I am waiting for any solution or agreement that will get us out of wars.”

The United States, Israel, and Lebanon signed a trilateral framework agreement aimed at combating Hezbollah last week, after days of US-mediated talks in Washington.

According to a US State Department statement, the agreement outlines a structured process for disarming Hezbollah, dismantling terrorist infrastructure, and enabling the IDF to withdraw from Lebanon once the threat posed by Hezbollah is removed.

Israel remains in southern Lebanon security zone
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu affirmed that as of the signing of the agreement, Israel will “remain [in] the security zone in southern Lebanon” and coordinate the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the area as the Lebanese army works to disarm Hezbollah and establish control over territory.

Under the deal negotiated in Washington, Israel agreed to withdraw from two areas that will be taken over by the Lebanese army as pilot zones where it will aim to implement plans to disarm Hezbollah. The agreement also established a US-facilitated trilateral Military Coordination Group for Lebanon to ensure the implementation of the framework.
