IDF forces are now encircling the town of Bint Jbeil in southern Lebanon. Troops, who began the operation overnight, caught dozens of Hezbollah terrorists who had taken refuge in the town by surprise. Some attempted to flee as Israeli forces closed in and were killed while escaping. Others remain barricaded inside, as IDF units move slowly and cautiously to locate them and clear the town of Hezbollah presence.

The operation in Bint Jbeil carries strong symbolic weight. The Shiite Lebanese town, located about 4 kilometers from the Israeli border, is the largest of its kind in the area and was the site where Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah delivered his well-known speech in the 1990s comparing Israeli society to a “spider’s web.”

The encirclement battle is still ongoing. Both operations, the Operation Eternal Darkness strike and the Bint Jbeil encirclement, were based on intelligence gathered and plans developed in recent weeks by Military Intelligence and Northern Command, with the understanding that the IDF could operate in Lebanon even during a ceasefire with Iran.

The senior security official noted that despite repeated Iranian demands to include Lebanon in the ceasefire agreement with the United States, a decision was reached by political leaders in Washington and Jerusalem to separate the two arenas. However, in Washington, President Donald Trump and his aides clarified that Israel remains free to continue fighting in Lebanon despite the ceasefire.

Iran continues to insist that Lebanon is part of the agreement. Security officials say this likely follows pressure from Hezbollah on Tehran not to abandon it to face Israel alone after Hezbollah had previously assisted Iran. Iranian officials, including Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Aerospace Force commander Amir Ali Hajizadeh Mousavi, have threatened to strike Israel and close the Strait of Hormuz in retaliation for IDF operations in southern Lebanon and as a deterrent against further action.

The IDF assesses that Iran seeks to preserve the ceasefire and will likely limit its response to extending the closure of the Strait of Hormuz rather than launching direct attacks on Israel. 34 new West Bank settlements formally approved by government

The security cabinet approved the establishment of 34 new settlements in a meeting two weeks ago, The Times of Israel has learned.

This brings to 103 the total number of new settlements established or retroactively legalized by the government since it took office in 2022. Only six new settlements were formally approved by Israel in the 30 years following the signing of the Oslo Accords in 1993.

Security cabinet meetings and their decisions are classified, and there has been no official confirmation of the decision by the government.

The new settlements likely include not only brand-new settlements but also the retroactive legalization of formerly illegal outposts, and are spread across the entire West Bank, previous reports have indicated.

Ynet reports that IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir expressed serious concern at the security cabinet meeting that the approval of the new settlements would further stretch the IDF’s already severely strained manpower resources.

The Yesh Din organization, which campaigns against violations of Palestinian rights, alleges that the approval of the new settlements is designed to advance the “ethnic cleansing” of the West Bank.

"While we were running to bomb shelters [during the war with Iran and Hezbollah], it was urgent for cabinet members to establish dozens more new settlements in the West Bank, thereby advancing the Smotrich plan for ethnic cleansing of the West Bank by pushing the Palestinians into small, densely populated enclaves in Area A,” the group charges, referring to Religious Zionism party head Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, a firm settlement advocate.

The Peace Now organization, which strongly opposes the settlement movement, accuses the government of trying to establish as many facts on the ground as possible before the next elections.

"Today, it is clear to everyone, and the IDF emphasizes this again and again, that establishing settlements is harmful to security, places an abnormal burden on the IDF, and harms the possibility of resolving the conflict and reaching some kind of future security and peace,” the group claims.

I would not know exactly why PM Netanyahu escalated the Israeli attack on Lebanon immediately after a cease fire agreement was purportedly reached between Iran and the USA. The attack by Hezbollah on Israel was in solidarity with Iran and Hezbollah was expected to abide by any cease fire that is agreed upon.

However on the overall or initially, Israel only responds to Hezbollah attacks on Israel emanating from Lebanon just like they respond to attacks from Syrian territory.You would not expect any entity to sit still while under attack. They have to fight back so as to keep on existing.

It should also never be forgotten that it was the United Nations that recognized Israel in 1948 and there are now over nine million Israeli living in Israel including over seven million Jewish Israelis who can't be wished away. They have also added value to the land that was granted them as without Israel's desalination technology, the land will not have enough potable water to support one third of the people now living there. They will not have enough water for agriculture too. So the land is definitely worth far more than it was worth in the nineteenth century and it is because of the Israelis.

Now, if there will be permanent peace in the region then the UN that approved the establishment of Israel must also guarantee security in the region. The land needs to be properly partitioned and there must be a neutral force to keep the peace. Any attack on Israel, Gaza, Lebanon West bank or Syria and etc by any group should be taken up by the neutral force led by the USA and funded by the UN. That is the only way to achieve permanent peace and to avoid a dangerous arms race in the region. There are already many such US bases around the world serving much the same purpose.
