I AM ASHAMED — Two First Ladies, Two Silences, One Nigeria By Madam Wahala Reports I am ashamed. Not because Nigeria lacks strong women. Not because Nigeria lacks voices. But because in the middle of killings, kidnappings, terrorism and banditry, the silence from the highest places is louder than the gunshots. So let’s talk honestly. Let’s compare two First Ladies — not by fashion, not by grammar, not by class — but by presence, courage, and public empathy. Patience Jonathan: Mocked, But Present Many Nigerians laughed at Patience Jonathan when she was First Lady. They mocked her accent. They turned her speeches into memes. They reduced her emotions to jokes. But history cannot lie. When the Chibok girls were kidnapped, Patience Jonathan did not hide. She: Cried publicly Called meetings Spoke to the nation Kept the issue in the public space Used her position to force attention on the pain Yes, her words were sometimes clumsy. Yes, social media laughed. But she showed up. She made it impossible for Nigeria to pretend nothing happened. She carried the pain loudly — even when it cost her dignity in public opinion. Her weakness was style. Her strength was presence. The Present First Lady: Dignified, But Distant Today, Nigeria is facing: Relentless killings School kidnappings Terror attacks Banditry Communities wiped out Families destroyed Yet, what do we mostly see? Silence. Not noise. Not outrage. Not visible advocacy. Not national emotional leadership. This does not mean the current First Lady is a bad person. But it does mean that her public role in times of national pain feels absent. We see ceremony. We see calm. We see dignity. But in a country bleeding this much, dignity without voice starts to feel like distance. The Uncomfortable Question Let’s be honest: If Patience Jonathan were still First Lady today, would Nigeria be this quiet emotionally? Based on her record, the answer is simple: No. She would have spoken. She would have cried. She would have called attention. She would have made the suffering impossible to ignore. People might mock her again. Twitter might trend her again. But silence would not be our national response. This Is Bigger Than Two Women This is not about: Grammar Class Sophistication Packaging It is about whether power still feels human. Nigeria today is worse off in security than it was years ago. But our public empathy from the top feels weaker. That is the real shame. We used to have a First Lady who was imperfect but emotionally present. Now we have better packaging — but less visible compassion. Why I Am Ashamed I am ashamed because: A nation can be burning and those at the top can remain comfortable People can be dying and leadership can remain quiet Fear can spread and empathy can go missing We can normalize silence in the face of tragedy Patience Jonathan was mocked — but she stood in the storm. Today, we have silence — and call it composure. But let’s be honest: Silence is not leadership. Distance is not compassion. And dignity is not a substitute for courage. Nigeria does not just need governance. Nigeria needs visible humanity from those closest to power. And that is why I say it again: I am ashamed. Not of the women. Not of Nigerians. But of a system where the country is bleeding, and empathy has gone quiet. “If our leaders stay silent while the nation bleeds, whose responsibility is it to speak — them or us?” It’s short I am ashamed...I am ashamed....I am ashamed.. LordBiden:Please how did he make the money you asserted that he should enjoy? |
nairalanda1:But unfortunately bandits, and boko haram attack fulani herdsmen and steal their cows. Hence the AK 47. Sorry for wasting my time with you. |
grandstar:So their fear for rustling of cattle worth over 30m should necessitate carrying arms? You make this same excuse for those killed by terrorists? |
Sirmwill:Wrong!! All I seeis a very weak and tribalistic president who applies the law selectively. Can any Igboman be allowed by this government to do this? |
At the same time, the president issued a firm warning to Fubara, insisting that political seniority and structures must be respected. One source quoted Tinubu as drawing a comparison with Lagos State politics, saying: “Is Babajide Sanwo-Olu my leader in Lagos, or was Babatunde Fashola my leader when he was governor?” Going by the above, Odili and not wike should be tje political leader of Rivers State, deciding who becomes the governor and who gets what in Rivers State. See what Agbadorians and Agbadoists support. |
SisterAnn:How did he make the money? Could he afford private jet charter or ownership before he became a governor? |
Belurved1:Whose money was used to foot the bills there? |
This is what Agbadorians and Agbadoists support oooo. Chai!!!! |
Dalohad:NgeneUkwenu Helinues Madridguy Biodun556 MANNA_BBQGRILLS Ttalk Mynd44 Throwback Etc |
Let's not forget that this was what the APC and Tinubu supporters defended with their lives for 8 years ooooo. Where are the "darling daddy chanters" when you need them most. |
Melagros:My brother!!!! Soludo is pushing people to go and face insecurity while he enjoys retinue of security men and guards. Tackle insecurity, no way. |
Racoon:These guys knew the authentic result. That's why they are fixated on Obi. Who do people get fixated on in competitions or events? The best or winner of course. |
LeoThaGreat:Does lack the of evidence of cheating from the accuser mean that the accused does not cheat? |
Sirchiboy:What do you mean by "without evidence"? Was he cheating? Simple. Does no evidence mean no cheating? |
motayoayinde:Leave them alone bros. Why una wey be muslims abhor Israel? Anyway, una hatred for them has not made them irrelevant. They were exiled by their God, GOD Almighty. He has restored them to their land and there is nothing una go fit do. Leave Jacob alone, una no dey hear. |
Una no dey tire for propaganda and lies? So who killed the imaginary former Israeli PM son in Iran? |
motayoayinde:Bros go and rest. Make una channel the resources and strength una use dey hate Israel into something productive. Despite una hatred for israel right from the days of Muhammad, una never fit conquer them. Make una rest abeg. |
anonimi:Please ask him oooooo. They hate the USA because of its stand against Islamic terrorists and support for Christians who are persecuted, especially, by muslims. |
budaatum:What is the Chinese political philosophy? |
"He quotes the Anambra Commissioner of Police who says that they cannot force people to come out, because people have a constitutional right to stay at home, but they will provide security so that those that want to go out can go out." The police commissioner get sense pass Soludo sef. |
samuelson06:"You don't allow anyone's wrongdoing to make you go astray." This is instructive |
CodeTemplarr:Back in those days, every drink except water was called wine. Even liquid medicines were called wine too. |
Hmmmmmmm So dem go drink even the snake shit join body? |
Thundafireseun:That one? She will be temporary blind and deaf to this because no be Igboman. They think that evil respects tribe or tribe determines evil. |
Fiscus105:I also believe you are not entering vehicle again because of accident that happening of daily basis. Good analogy. |
samuelson06:This is not totally correct. As a Christian, you don't just leave other Christians alone to manage themselves as the like. This is not what CHRIST JESUS and the apostle preached. Why did Apostle Paul call out Apostle Peter, Demas, who abandoned him for the world, Alexander the coppersmith, who did him "great harm", and Phygelus and Hermogenes? Why did the early Church call out false teachers? If you assert that we leave others alone to live as they deem okay, then, why evangelism? Why "church services" and sermons? |
jojo1415:Christianity is about following the teachings of CHRIST JESUS. It is about conforming to His image and likeness. Anything short of this is NOT Christianity, no matter who is involved. |
Kingsley34:What do you mean by "Christianity is looking like a joke"? What is it in What both Chris Okafor and his congregation did that represents Christ or what Christianity is? |
davillian:Your experience is a serious pointer to failed leader, politocal leadership. We cannot have corrupt and incompetent leaders and expect honest, competent citizens. While I agree that the leaders are a reflection of the masses, it is pertinent for us to note that to change a society or an organisation, we need leaders with the characters that entity desires. Leadership impacts tremendously on a people. Even GOD Almighty places utmost emphasis on leadership. The sins of leaders usually rob on their societies. Some peeps expect the masses to change, while they continue to support and vote for wicked, corrupt, and incompetent leaders. This is madness. It won't work. Positive change is better from top-down. Any change from down-up will definitely be violent and catastrophic. The above is what APC supporters have failed for grasp. |
Putindbutt:Just to remind you that it is not his personal money. He is NOT doing SE any favours, rather he is courting SE for votes. Dem no born am well not do one single project in SE. Previous governments worked on this road. |
