Politics / Re: Buhari To Float New Party by emma2999: 8:07pm On Jul 11, 2009
@Jakumo
Thanks again for responding.I am happy that you are willing to at LEAST CONSIDER that Buhari , while he may be guilty of many other things did not loot the economy and is one of the few incorruptiable leaders we had.

You mentioned that he jailed people without trial. That is not correct sir, every politician arrested by the regime was put on trial. The average time to conclude a trail under the Nigerian judicial system takes from 3-10 years which is considered extremly long by Amnesty and othe human rights groups. In the US for example, most criminal trials where the defendant puts up a strong defence take about a year before judgement is given, though there may be appeals.

Every politician arrested by the Buhari government was charged with an offence and by the 20th month when his government was overthrown, almost all the cases that began in 1984 had been concluded. I have relatives who have been in government and held government positions. But that does not blind me to the fact of the devilish ways these guys loot the economy. I have seen people burnt to death by mobs in Lagos for stealing a purse in the motor park, I have seen armed robbers executed by firing squad for stealing N2000. The politicians who were sentenced to prison in Buhari's days were stole BILLIONS OF NAIRA WHEN ONE DOLLAR WAS STILL BEING SOLD FOR 80 KOBO. These people stole from generations and raped the nation. They destroyed the Niger Delta and made millions of young boys and girls destitute in the North. They more than deserved the 80 year jail terms they deserved.
Buhari was too lient with those thieves, if he had shot them by firing squad like JJ Rawlings did-they would not have been able to come back and our country might be better now.

ALL THE POLITICIANS jailed for corruption by the Buhari government after they went to trial were released by Babangida. All OF THEM.
And they came back to do more devastation under IBB, Abacha and Obasanjo. One of them who was an " ordinary" party official in the 2nd republic came back to preside over the looting of 5 Billion in the Aviation industry under Abacha.

@sley4life Thank you sir.
I wish Buhari could sponsor me, but unfortunately I guess I might be richer than him and I should be sponsoring him. He is the only ex head of state ( that I am aware of) who HAS no business, no company and only 1 HOUSE.
Where did I get my facts? One good thing about Nigeria is that secrets are hard to keep in Nigeria. If your deputy driver doesnt gossip, your driver, housemaid, secretary, gateman or friend will. How did we know that OBJ gave the first contract to import petrol to his friend who had little or no knowledge of that industry. ( They later became enemies). We all know why after 12 years, the oil refineries are still not working. We all know who killed Dele Giwa, why and how. We all know who killed Kudirat Abiola. We all know what killed Abacha. We all know who killed Dukoboh. We all know the deal between Yaradua and Obasanjo.

Basically in law one needs to prove that someone else is a criminal, not that a person has to prove that he is not a criminal. Although IBB wanted to change that during the Kaduna riots of 1992 when he wept on seeing the way the people of Kaduna south had defended themselves and killed his thugs. He proclaimed there and then that everyone arrested would be held as guilty until they could prove their innocence!

My house in Ilorin is just about 500 meteres from Idiabon's house.
Buhari's house is on a public street in Kaduna not on a secluded hilltop like IBB and Abdusalem or a private retreat like OBJ.
I have access to every company file kept by the CAC.

Go to any of these public places and you will see the multi billion edifices ( note I mean multi billion dollar, not naira) these people have put up.

IBB's Mansion in Minna ( any taxi driver will show it to you)
IBB's Villa in France ( Search the public records of the French housing ministry online. You will get the address and be able to view it with Google Earth)
OBJ's private University and largest poultry farm in black Africa
Andy's Uba private jet parked at the Abuja airport.
James Ibori's private jet parked at the Lagos Airport.
Dipreye Alamieyeseigha's massive Hotel.
Dipreye Alamieyeseigha's V8A Waterfront property in Cape Town, South Africa
Atiku Abubakar's private University.
Audu Abubakar's fleet of cars kept in Kogi ( worth almost N200 million) plus his mansion.
Tafa Balogun's mansion in Osun State.
Gbenga Daniel's newspaper.
Bola Tinubu;s newspaper.
Sani Abachas' high rise in Kano where one floor alone is filled with foreign currency in "Ghana must go" bags. Ironically Ghana has gone now and they are doing much better.

I am certain that if you have never seen of these places or properties, I am certain that someone you know who lives in Yola, Ota, Anambra, Lagos, Abuja or Osun would have seen one of these.

There is not one person on Earth who can say he has seen any house owned by Buhari except his 3 bedroom property in Kaduna. Some people just are not tempted or crazy about money or material acquistion. I know it sounds crazy, but its real, even in Nigeria. Not many people, but some. And there are a few other prominent Nigerians who have this trait.

In the early 90's Major General Ishola Williams was sent to the USA on training. Sani Abacha, then the Chief of Army Staff, gave him a $1000. Williams returned it, saying in all honesty he could not believe that the $1000 could have come from Abacha's salary. While he is today Vice President of Transperancy International, Abacha we found out amassed more money than 99% of the Nigerian population. He was in fact probably the richest Nigerian before he died.

Just this morning, Barack Obama arrived Ghana and uttered these words: "No country is going to create wealth if its leaders exploit the economy to enrich themselves, or if police can be bought off by drug traffickers," he said. Of course we know the countries he is refering to.

@Big Ben-I fully understand you!

I once heard a funny story. The angels of the other countries in West Africa complained to the chief angel that Nigeria had been given everything to the dertriment of the other countries. Huge population, good weather, crude oil, gold, minerals, natural gas, good soil, good sports people, actors, businessmen, etc.

The chief angel just smiled and asked them: they dont have the leaders to use those things well!

Ghana has began to produce oil in commercial quantities. Even before the oil came, they used what money they had from cocoa to build a clean orderly country and investors had began to target Ghana instead of Nigeria. In 5 years from now, Ghana will be the Giant of Africa. Mark my words, if the people who continue to rule this country are the same set and do not repent, by 2015 we will be taking or asking assistance and loans from Ghana.

@Jakumo sir!  I mean no disrespect. I  thus give all due respect to an elder Nairalander.

My question is " What stolen fortune"

All our leaders that we accuse of looting even when they havnt been charged to court, at least there is a lot of evidence that they just couldnt have acquired the properties with their salaries.

Babangida's 50 bedroom Hilltop Mansion

Obasanjo's 200 million Transcorp shares

Ibori's private jet

Atiku's multi million dollar private University

Where is Buhari's loot?

In the banks? Where all the chairmen were Obasanjo's boys and would have exposed him to OBJ
In overseas accounts? Where his government made enemies of western powers
Fleets of cars? That would have to be registered with FRSC

You can accuse Buhari of many things, but please not looting or corruption.

During the time when he was detained by IBB for about 3 years, his wife had to start making hair for people to fend for the family. She made the mistake of asking for help from IBB's  government when the returns from the hair saloon was not enough. For that reason Buhari separated from her for 15 years.

Corruption, looting, money issues-not Buhari.

Maybe something else.
Politics / Re: Buhari To Float New Party by emma2999: 5:47am On Jul 11, 2009
Dear Lord save us from all these politicians.

FBS and Neeyee . By my understanding of the Bible and a little of the Quran, God is not likely to answer that prayer. As the Bible says " My people perish for lack of knowledge" .
These politicians did not  come from Mars or the Andromeda Galaxy. They didnt even come from Iran! They are Nigerians -through and through. If almost all our politicians are corrupt and almost all our policemen, it must mean that the pool where they are drawn from ( the Nigerian  population) is massively corrupt and that is true! This is exactly what General Buhari wants to change.

No nation can progress economically or scientifically with widespread corruption and indiscipline. It just doesnt work that way. Thats what the Muritala and Buhari regimes wanted to change. Until our national physce and mind sets are changed to turn from corruption and indiscipline, WE WILL NOT AND CANNOT MAKE ANY PROGRESS AS A NATION. Just take a look at the efforts of Fasola in Lagos, almost everything he is trying to do in Lagos-will sooner or later be turned upside down due to corruption and indiscipline. Some local government official in Oshodi will sooner or later turn a blind eye to an attempt by someone to put up a small stall on the railway tracks in Oshodi  that Fasola cleared. Some BRT official will want to give a few buses to his nephew for his  1 week wedding in the upcountry while masses of people on the streets have no buses to ply on, if not steal the spare parts of the bus.

No matter how much we get angry with the reports on CNN, ABC, BBC etc Nigeria has a fundamental problem with corruption and indiscipline. And this is massively widespread.  Just consider this:
I live in a compound of 5 flats in Lagos-

Anytime NEPA used to cut our light ( before we got the prepaid meters) when ever our bills were really past due, by 7pm a local electrician would have been hired to fix it back.

Before the DSTV monopoly was broken, there was this way people could illegally tap into their services by just paying a few thousands. My neighbour wanted us to do it and when I said it was wrong, I looked and sounded odd. Anyway he got himself connected and so did so many houses on my street.

My Aunt and many of her teacher friends hardly ever went to school on time, but always wrote 7.30 as the time they came to work ( even when they got to work at 9a.m)

A neigbhour who hardly knew how to drive had a drivers license delivered to her house. No exams whatsoever. It takes at least 2 months for any Nigerian ( even those who have been professional drivers in  Nigeria) to get driving licences in the USA. Even if you are the President's daughter you have to pass the exam YOURSELF.

A father I heard about bought SSCE Papers for his son.

A young neighbour asked N5000 from me, not to pay his school fees , but as his own contribution so that the Coordinator of his JAMB center could turn a blind eye while the students cheated enmass.

I am not trying to paint myself as some saint amongst a horde of sinners. Not in any way. If I am not guilty of the sin of bribery and corruption, I am guilty of many other sins myself. Its just in Nigeria, corruption has become something else.

I dont of course believe that hope is lost for Nigeria. Since there was a time when things were not like this, than certainly things will get better. I am told that as recently as the 1960s, market women would leave the items unattended in the market and the expressway and just use stones to indicate the amount of money the buyer should leave. We need a leader who has both vision and discipline. No matter how visonary any leader is in Nigeria today, the endemic corruption will pull him down or force him to compromise. Buhari has both vision and discipline.

Buhari's great problem lies in his inability to get a good PRO and to network. You cant win elections on the pages of newspapers and without a mass movement an outsider cannot defeat those ruling Nigeria today. When Buhari was launching his 2007 campaign, I watched on TV, how he almost got killed when the platform he was standing on collapsed. Femi Falana and many politicians from ANPP, NCP, etc were also there that day. His campaign was so poor, they could not afford the N50,000 required to build a proper platform that could carry the weight of people. No ANPP Governor, politician or businessman was willing to fund his campaign. Corporate Nigeria and all the Governors had gone the way of Atiku and Yaradua.

For several months in a year, I stay in Ghana. During these periods, I have never had to bribe anyone, never had to see the driver of my taxi give a policeman bribe ( I didnt even see any roadblocks), and the power supply has been near perfect. Once the President of Ghana was attending a burial near the Cedi building, if not that I heard it on the news, I would never have known. The taxi I was in passed by the Church and there were no road blocks or hundreds of policemen. Indeed his motorcade didnt seem to have more than 4 cars.

In the US, I have lived for some years. I have gotten a drivers license, government documents etc and never once was asked for a bribe.

I am not one of those who believes Nigeria is worse than other countries, every country has its own problems and good points. But the corruption and indiscipline in Nigeria is far too widespread. And because it has not always been like this, it can change. There is corruption in every country of the world, but the one here is MASSIVE from the President to the beggar on the street.

There is a glimmer of hope for Nigeria, with the way opposition politicians were getting their mandates back from the PDP via the courts, the way Ribadu took Nigeria by storm jailing Governors, Senators, even his own boss the IG of Police ( Ribadu's greatest offence was supporting Buhari over Yaradua in 2007 and naming the EFCC headquarters in Abuja after Tunde Idiagbon-Buhari's deputy during the  1983 -1985 period ), there is hope.

But with the signals from the Niger Delta, Ogun State, Kano, the unrepentant looting of public funds, glorification of Yahoo Yahoo and total lack of vision and ideas of virtually all the leaders- the CIA's prediction that Nigeria will have become a failed state by 2020 just might come true.
Politics / Re: Buhari To Float New Party by emma2999: 9:49pm On Jul 10, 2009
akigbemaru-Thanks for your comments. The truth is that Buhari in almost all certainties won the 2007 elections, just like Awolowo won the 1983 elections. You mentioned letting the younger generation take over. I disagree sir, thats one mistake we make a lot in Nigeria. This idea of the younger generation taking over. Take a look at some of that generation:
Salisu Buhari was 29 when became the speaker of the House in 1999. He was said to have forged a University of Toronto certificate.
Ayo Fayose
Andy and Chris Uba
James Ibori
Gbenga Daniel
Mohammed Abacha

What Nigeria needs is a change of mindset. There is no where in the world where wealth is not respected or valued. The probem is that it is the only thing we presently value in Nigeria and our own type of wealth is questionable. In most countries, you dont have to be rich to be respected. You can be intelligent, you can be good in sports, you can have talent, you can be  praised and become respected for many reasons besides wealth. Thats why every person in office today does all he can, to amass wealth.

No matter how intelligent, or famous or talented you are in Nigeria, if you dont have money-you are finished. Emmanuel Amuneke was a former Afican Footballer of the year when he was beaten to pulp by soldiers in Lagos for blocking their way with his car. Barack Obama is the most powerful man in the world today, but he can NEVER SLAP a cleaner in the White House. In Nigeria if you have enough money, you cannot only slap a cleaner, you can kill him and bury him and nothing will happen.

There is nothing really fanciful in the western world. I have lived in the UK, US and been to the major western countries. We have everything they have and more. Population, natural resources, good weather, good soil, professors, scientists, food in abundance-we have it all. What we lack is order. Its order that allows me call 911 now in the USA and the Police will be in my house in 3 minutes. Not one Police car, but dozens. ANd they wont ask if I have money or  if I am black, or white.
Its order that means that anytime I pick my phone and call a number in the US, I ALWAYS get through. Its order that means that in years, I have never seen the light even blink talk less of going off.

Its order that means that when a Governor in the US or Mayor in England finishes his term of office, he doesnt have to be afraid of going into poverty and does not  triy to loot all the money he can and or try and go for a third term.

There is no difference between the young and older generation. Indeed our own is worse. When these guys who are now in their 50's and 60's and are looting the economy were young, they were either working  hard hoping for a better tomorrow or at worst stealing N5000 in the office they worked in .
On my street in Lagos, there is a house where three young boys, all under 22, indeed one was 18 then, stole N100 million through "Yahoo Yahoo" Everyone in the neighbourhood knows. Indeed once in while, they seem to have Yahoo Yahoo Boys convention in their house when the total cost of all the cars parked in front of their house is almost if not more than N10 million. And they live in  their parents house.

Have you heard whats going on in Ogun State. All of them belong to the younger generation. One of the commissioners ( the one described as the most violent) was even recently a students union leader a few years ago.

What Nigeria needs is  a  patriot to rule this country. Someone like JJ Rawlings who till today has only one house in Accra, 2 cars and a motorcycle. Unlike here where one of our former new generation governors has a $40 million private jet and another has an oil refinery in Ecuador. Today Ghana has had 17 years of uninterrupted democracy. Such that Barack Obama and the Americans are saying Ghana is now our example.
That person can be any age he wants to be , whether 25 ( if the constitution allows that) or 100 years old as long as he gets the job done.
Politics / Re: Buhari To Float New Party by emma2999: 9:07pm On Jul 10, 2009
I am extremly suprised that of all the people who have responded to this post, not one person seemed to have anything good to say about Buhari. All the posts  except for one neutral one were against him. I am not in anyway trying to be offensive or insult people and certainly EVERYONE HAS A RIGHT TO THEIR OPINION. But is it possible that our generation has been robbed of history and historical facts ( I am assuming that the vast majority people on Nairaland and those who responded to this post are less than 40 years of age).

In the entire history of Nigeria, there have only been two periods when Nigeria was in good hands with good plans. July 1975 to Feb 1976 when Muritala ruled and Dec 1983 to Aug 1985 when Buhari and Idiagbon ruled.

Certainly Buhari is not perfect ( indeed as far as I know no man is perfect), but he is in a far different class than 99% of Nigerian politicians.
The Buhari Government did have a plan to change Nigeria. It was a 5 phase plan similar to Muritala's plan. The first phase was introducing discipline to our polity. The last democratic election.

Things werent perfect during his time, but people were proud to be Nigerians and began to respect the law. I remember once when we were travelling on the expressway to Ibadan with my Mum and brothers and I heard the adults discussing. No one dared to throw out a piece of waste paper even though there was no policeman or even anyone around at that spot of the expressway. People were begining to change.

Our nation has over the years become a country of dirty and corrupt people, the Buhari regime was changing this and they were leading by example.

Apart from possibly General Ishola Williams,Buhari is the only retired General that I know of who has only one house and it is a 3 bedroom house in Kaduna. All the others have 50 bedroom houses with extensions in every major city of Nigeria and the world. We all have our weaknesses, but it is not everyone who can be tempted by money. Money just doesnt tempt some people.

We cannot all agree on the same thing, but Buhari has shown his nationalism and incorruptablity.

In 1983 when he was the GOC of the 3rd Division in Jos, Chadian troops invaded parts of Nigeria as they usually do. This was just a few months after Camerounian troops had killed 5 Nigerians and the Shagari Government had decided to act like big brother and forgive the killers. When Buhari say that the Shagari government was not ready to defend Nigerians again, Buhari moved his troops from Jos to the Chadian border and dealt with the invaders. When they came to power, the British authorities siezed a Nigerian plane for unjustifiable reasons. Nigerian instantly seized a british ship. When Buhari was in power, Nigerians were not harrased at embassies and foreign airports. In those days, you didnt have to appear at the US embassy to get your visa.
The government of Buhari and Idiagbion tackled the economy on all fronts. They met the dollar at about 80 kobo to a dollar and kept like that all through their 20 month administration. They refused to suck up to the IMF, World Bank and Western powers. Nations were begining to respect Nigeria again. We didnt have an EFCC or ICCP then, corruption was almost non existent just days after the looting of the 2nd Republic.

I have always supported Buhari and always will. The only problem he has is that he has never had a good PRO and he is too blunt.
There are two reasons, why Buhari may not win elections in Nigeria ( though I hope he does and things may change).
1) He is too blunt. Just like Awolowo, who said he would probe  Obasanjo if he won the election. Buhari kept on insisting he would probe Obasanjo and Yaradua. And when Buhari probes, you know its going to be the full weight of the law:100 years in jail or the firing squad, not all the 6 months and 2 days in jail for looters, EFCC is sharing now.

2) As a people we seem to prefer corrupt leaders. Gowon lasted for 9 years, IBB for 8 years, OBJ for 8 years, Abacha for 5 years. When Muritala became Head of State, he declared his assets and returned to the treasury anything that his salary could not have bought, then he began to order all other officials to do the same, 5 months later he was dead. When Buhari became Head of State, he began to put looters in jail for 80, 90, 100 years. Cocain pushers were executed. 20 months later, he was overthrown.

Its sad that the only reason Buhari was overthrown is because a certain General wanted to prevent his wife from being arrested and executed for being a drug barroness. In August 1985, the Federal Govevernment issued a gazzette announcing the retirement of  another General. He was being probed for being involved in the drug trade. He was to be arrested on September after investigations had been concluded.10 days later, Buhari and Idiagbon were overthrown, precisely on Tuesday August 27, 1985. On Friday August 30 1985, the government of then Major General  Ibrahim Babangida revered the retirement of that drug General and called off the investigation of the drug baroness. Within 1 year, ALL the politicians who had been found guilty of looting the country's wealth were released from jail.

Tai Solarin ( my mentor and founding principal of my school) was jailed for 6 months by the Buhari Regime. But when he came out, he had nothing but praise for Buhari and Idiagbon, describing the regime as "effectively ruthless", putting Nigeria in the right direction.
Their government was the only one that Gani Fawehinmi ever supported. Both Gani and Femi Falana amongst other untainted activists endorsed the presidential run of Buhari.

I had the opportunity of having my prep school in England ( Hampshire). If any nation is going to progress, its citizens must know its History. You cant progress in science and technology if history is not taught. I am a Nigerian living in Nigeria, but I know every King and Queen of England right from King Alfred the Great in the 900's and the invasion of the Normans led by William the Conquerer in 1066 up to Queen Elizabeth the second.
I know how King John, brother of Richard the Lionheart was forced to approved the Bill of Rights ( Magna Carta) in 1215  that is the precedent of every law on human rights and constitutional law all over the world. Every child in Fngland that is 10 years of age or more knows all these things, just like every citizen of England.

I am 100% certain that Fisayo, my 24 year old cousin who just graduated with a 1st Class from OAU does not know and has likely never heard of the name Mohammed Magoro or Adewale Ademoyega or Emmanuel Ifeajuna and has no idea what the Aburi talks of 1966 were about. I know for sure also, that my 12 year old neighbour here in Lagos  Nkechi who is now in JS3 does not know why the 1974 census was cancelled, or that Shehu Shagari was a minister in the first Republic. I doubt if she knows that Anthony Enaharo first moved the motion for Nigeria's Independence when he was 26 years old.

If we dont acquire historical facts and preserve our history, we likely will never make the progress we want to as a Nation.
Business / Re: Where To Exchange Dollars In Lagos Without Being Swindled by emma2999: 10:48pm On Jun 21, 2009
Never use the services of the Yoruba  and NON Hausa exchangers in Ikeja ( on Allen, Awolowo, Airport) etc. Dont get me wrong, I am Yoruba 100%.
Only deal with the authentic Hausa Mallams inside Alade Market.
All the exchangers in front of Airport Hotel in Ikeja are scammers.ALL OF THEM.The Police know, and everyone who lives there. They will scam you in any of the following ways:
Give you fake dollars back after checking your dollar.
Give you fake naira.
Give you less naira than you should get.
Use juju on you ( I mean real juju).
Beat you up after shouting " Ole" on you.
Ifyalways method is great, meet at the bank and have him pay to your bank.
