The only reason Messi's god-treatment didn't kill the team initially was because Messi and other players were still in their prime, they were first team choices and they were performing well.

Ibrahimovic, who is still performing consistently now in his "old age", was a victim of Messi's god-treatment. His departure wasn't a big deal because other good players were present and a good replacement in David Villa was bought. Now, most of the pillars have gone and the team is trash.
