The Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps has arrested a total of 321 traffic violators during a special enforcement exercise code-named “Operation Guduma” carried out across major highways and strategic corridors in the state.

The Public Education Officer of the Ogun State Sector Command, Afolabi Odunsi, disclosed this in a statement made available to newsmen, noting that the strategic intervention patrol operation commenced on May 18 and ended on May 22, 2026.

According to the statement, the operation was conducted in compliance with directives from the FRSC National Headquarters, Abuja, and supervised by Assistant Corps Marshal, JO Asaolu, alongside the Ogun State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi.

Odunsi explained that the special operation targeted offences such as overloading, fake diplomatic number plates, dangerous driving, mixed loading of passengers and goods, as well as improperly latched containers.

He stated that at the end of the exercise, 185 overloaded vehicles were apprehended, while 127 motorists were arrested for number plate violations.

The statement added that two motorists were booked for dangerous driving, three mixed-loading offences were recorded, while four unlatched container violations were detected and sanctioned during the operation.

The command, however, noted that no case involving fake diplomatic number plates was recorded throughout the exercise.

Speaking at the conclusion of the operation, the Ogun State Sector Commander, Oludare Ogunjobi, commended personnel involved in the enforcement exercise for their professionalism and commitment to duty.

Ogunjobi stressed that despite the official conclusion of the operation, surveillance and enforcement against the targeted offences would continue across Ogun State as part of efforts to safeguard lives and property on the highways.

He further warned that the use of fake number plates remains a major security threat, urging motorists, transport operators and members of the public to comply with traffic regulations and safety standards to reduce road crashes and ensure safer roads across the state.

ABEOKUTA The Transmission Company of Nigeria has intensified efforts to curb vandalism of power installations through grassroots sensitisation campaigns aimed at protecting critical national infrastructure.

The campaign was taken to Itele Community in Ijebu East Local Government Area of Ogun State by the Benin Region of TCN, where residents and community stakeholders were educated on the dangers associated with vandalism of transmission facilities.

Speaking during the sensitisation programme, the General Manager, Benin Region of TCN, Charles Iwuamadi, represented at the event, said the initiative became necessary because transmission lines pass through several communities whose residents are often the first to detect suspicious activities around power installations.

He described vandalism of transmission infrastructure as a major threat to the stability of the national grid and a challenge capable of increasing the cost of electricity transmission across the country.

According to him, destruction of power installations not only disrupts electricity supply but also affects economic activities and public safety in affected areas.

The TCN appealed to residents to take ownership of transmission facilities located within their communities by protecting them from vandals and promptly reporting suspicious activities to security agencies and relevant authorities.

The company also warned against the construction of illegal structures under high tension lines, stressing that such activities obstruct access to transmission corridors and expose residents to severe health and safety hazards.

Traditional rulers and community leaders at the programme expressed support for the campaign and pledged continued cooperation with the company to safeguard the installations.

The Moyegeso of Itele, Oba Mufutau Kasali, represented at the programme, assured TCN that residents of the community would continue to protect transmission facilities within the area, describing the infrastructure as vital to national development and stable electricity supply.

The TCN said the grassroots sensitisation campaign forms part of broader efforts to encourage communities to serve as first-line defenders of national grid assets through timely reporting of suspicious movements and illegal activities capable of causing prolonged power outages.

IJEBU ODE Organisers of the globally celebrated Ojude Oba Festival in Ijebu-Ode have announced that Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, will serve as the Special Guest of Honour at the 2026 edition of the annual socio-cultural festival of the Ijebu people.

The organisers disclosed that Dapo Abiodun and several prominent dignitaries from across the country are also expected at the festival, which traditionally holds a few days after the Eid-el-Kabir celebration and attracts hundreds of Ijebu sons and daughters from within and outside Nigeria.

They also dismissed speculations that the 2026 edition might not hold following the transition of the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, assuring the public that preparations for the cultural fiesta were already in top gear.

The unveiling took place during a world press conference held at the Awujale Palace in Ijebu-Ode, attracting traditional rulers, cultural stakeholders, sponsors, media practitioners and dignitaries from across the country.
Speaking on behalf of the organising committee, Prof. (Chief) Fassy Yusuf explained that the commemorative medallion was designed to reflect the heritage, royalty, elegance and enduring cultural pride of the Ijebu people. He clarified that the newly introduced emblem would not replace the permanent official logo of the festival but would serve as the unique identity for the 2026 edition.

IJEBU ODE. The Chief Whip of the Ogun State House of Assembly and member representing Ijebu Ode Constituency, Hon. Bakare Omolola Olanrewaju Serifat, has announced her withdrawal from the forthcoming All Progressives Congress House of Assembly primary election in Ogun State.
The lawmaker disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists, explaining that the decision followed the lack of support from Governor Dapo Abiodun for her re-election bid.
According to her, the governor did not back her aspiration for a second term in office, prompting her decision not to participate in the primary election in order to avoid division and tension within the party.
Hon. Bakare stated that the decision was taken after extensive consultations and interventions by party leaders and loyal supporters, stressing that it was made in the interest of unity within the APC.

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, has condemned the recent attack on schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, describing the incident as disturbing and unacceptable.
In a statement issued by the Director of Media and Public Affairs at the Ooni’s Palace, Otunba Moses Olafare, the monarch called for urgent security action to secure the release of victims abducted during the invasion of communities within the Ahoro-Esiele and Yawota axis of Ogbomoso.
The traditional ruler, who is also the Co-Chairman of the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria, lamented that armed gunmen attacked Community High School, Ahoro-Esiele, L.A. Primary School, Esiele, and Yawota Baptist Nursery and Primary School, throwing the affected communities into fear and confusion.
Oba Ogunwusi expressed sadness over the loss of lives recorded during the attack, including Assistant Headmaster Joel Adesiyan, a commercial motorcyclist and one of the abducted teachers, Mr Michael Oyedokun, who was reportedly killed while in captivity.
The Ooni noted that attacks on schools and educational institutions amount to a direct assault on the future of the nation, stressing that children and teachers must never become targets of criminal activities.
He therefore urged security agencies to intensify rescue operations to ensure the safe return of victims still in captivity, while also calling on governments at all levels to strengthen security architecture around schools and vulnerable rural communities.
The monarch further appealed to Nigerians to support security agencies with credible information, vigilance and community cooperation, describing the fight against kidnapping as a collective responsibility. He also sympathised with families of security operatives, Amotekun Corps members and local vigilantes who reportedly lost their lives during rescue efforts.

ABEOKUTA. The Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has commenced a special enforcement operation code-named “Operation Guduma” aimed at tackling the use of fake number plates, overloading, and other dangerous road practices across the state.

In a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Sector Command, Afolabi Odunsi, the operation is being carried out in strict compliance with directives from the FRSC National Headquarters, Abuja, as part of efforts to improve road safety and ensure compliance with traffic regulations.

The statement noted that the special intervention patrol operation, which commenced on Sunday, May 18, 2026, would run until May 22, 2026 across strategic corridors and major highways within Ogun State. It added that the exercise is being supervised by Assistant Corps Marshal (ACM) JO Asaolu, who was assigned by the Corps Marshal to oversee the intervention in collaboration with the Ogun State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi.

Odunsi explained that the operation is specifically designed to eliminate the use of illegal and counterfeit number plates as well as address overloading and unsafe haulage practices, which have continued to contribute to fatal road crashes on Nigerian highways. He stated that enforcement teams would monitor and prosecute offenders involved in the use of fake diplomatic number plates, dangerous mix-loading of passengers and goods, overloading, and movement of unlatched containers.

The Command clarified that the enforcement on diplomatic number plates targets only counterfeit plates and not legitimately issued but faded number plates. It further warned motorists and transport operators against violating established road safety regulations, stressing that offenders would be sanctioned in accordance with extant traffic laws.

Speaking on the operation, the Ogun State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, urged motorists, fleet managers, and other road users to cooperate fully with officers deployed for the exercise. He reiterated the Command’s zero tolerance for traffic violations capable of endangering lives and property, assuring the public that the operation would be conducted professionally, fairly, and in line with FRSC operational procedures.

FRSC unveils initiative to tackle traffic violations in Kano

The Federal Road Safety Corps, Kano Sector Command, has evolved a special patrol operation, tagged “Operation Guduma” to strengthen enforcement against traffic offences in the state.

Inaugurating the scheme on Monday in Kano, Yusuf Aliyu-Haruna, who is in charge of Federal Operations at FRSC Headquarters, urged personnel to remain disciplined, professional, and be committed in the discharge of their duties.

He directed personnel deployed to the Gadar Lado axis, along the Kano–Zaria Road to ensure compliance and assess the operational effectiveness of the exercise.

The Ogun State Government has confirmed that all victims admitted to hospitals following the recent chemical inhalation incident that affected several schools in Ijebu-Ode have been treated and discharged in stable condition.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, disclosed this during an engagement with parents, guardians and residents held at Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School, Ijebu-Ode, on Saturday.
Dr. Coker explained that the affected persons, including children and adults who were admitted at the State Hospital, Ijebu-Ode, and facilities in Ijebu-Ife, had responded positively to treatment and were certified medically fit for discharge.
According to her, the state government has commenced additional emergency measures, including the deployment of ambulance crews to all wards within Ijebu-Ode to guarantee rapid medical response in the event of any future emergency.
She said each ambulance would be equipped with a driver and a trained paramedic to ensure swift intervention.
The commissioner further revealed that the government had established a comprehensive medical response protocol to facilitate the immediate transfer of patients requiring advanced care from secondary health centres to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital.
Dr. Coker attributed the incident to methane gas exposure, noting that while methane is not toxic, it reduces the availability of oxygen needed by the body and brain to function effectively.
“Methane is a non-toxic gas, but it competes with oxygen in the environment. Mild exposure may not produce symptoms, while moderate exposure can result in fatigue, rapid heartbeat and breathing difficulties,” she explained.
She added that no severe cases had been recorded, stating that all victims experienced only mild to moderate symptoms.
The commissioner urged residents to remain calm and promptly report any unusual odour or suspicious environmental occurrence through the ministry’s emergency response channels.
She disclosed that district surveillance nurses, rapid response officers and environmental health officials had already been deployed to affected communities, while the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control had also been notified of the development.
Dr. Coker further announced plans by the ministry to train teachers in both public and private schools, as well as interested parents, as community first responders to enhance emergency preparedness.
She explained that emergency response measures include immediately seeking help and protecting the respiratory system with wet clothing in suspected cases of methane exposure.
The commissioner also disclosed that toxicology tests would be carried out on some of the affected children to determine the level of exposure to the gas.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, said the government had installed gas analysers around affected schools to monitor air quality and environmental conditions.
Oresanya noted that the monitoring devices would be extended to more schools across Ijebu-Ode, adding that experts from Olabisi Onabanjo University were already collaborating with the ministry in analysing environmental data generated from the equipment.
“We have been monitoring these analysers hourly over the last four weeks around affected schools and other parts of Ijebu-Ode,” he stated.
He added that the state government was also working closely with the Federal Ministry of Environment and relevant research institutions to identify the root cause of the recurring emissions.
On his part, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, appealed to school administrators, teachers and parents not to panic, assuring residents that the government remained committed to the safety and welfare of students.
He cautioned against the spread of misinformation capable of creating fear and confusion within the community.
Arigbabu also directed school principals to remain vigilant and security conscious following reports of suspicious activities around some schools.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, disclosed that security operatives, including the School Protection Squad, Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit and other specialised police departments, had been deployed to schools and surrounding communities.
Ojajuni added that drones were already being used to monitor the affected areas and strengthen security surveillance across the environment.

Operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, Ogun State Police Command, have neutralized two suspected kidnappers and arrested a suspected kidnapping kingpin, Seriki Mohammed Abdullahi ‘M’, alongside a suspected gang member, Mohammed Bello ‘M’, during an intelligence-led operation that also led to the recovery of one AK-47 rifle loaded with ten rounds of 5.6mm ammunition, one single-barrel gun, the sum of One Million Five Hundred Thousand Naira (₦1,500,000) suspected to be ransom proceeds, several mobile phones, and a black bag.

The operation was carried out following sustained intelligence-led investigations into the kidnapping of three persons abducted on the 11th of May 2026 at Ipojo Area, Iperin, Atan-Ijebu, Ogun State.

The victims regained their freedom unharmed on the 14th of May 2026 at about 7:30 p.m. after being released by their captors following the payment of an unspecified ransom.

Following the victims release, operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Squad intensified efforts to track down members of the gang responsible for the abduction.

Consequently, on the 15th of May 2026 at about 5:00 a.m., operatives acting on credible intelligence stormed the kidnappers’ hideout located along the Ijebu-Ode/Ibadan Road axis of Ogun State.

On sighting the Police operatives, the suspects opened fire, leading to a fierce gun duel.

The operatives responded professionally, resulting in the neutralization of two of the suspected kidnappers, while other members of the gang escaped into the surrounding forest with varying degrees of bullet injuries.

Further intelligence-led follow-up operations led to the arrest of the suspected kingpin, Seriki Mohammed Abdullahi ‘M’, and his gang member, Mohammed Bello ‘M’, alongside the recovery of additional incriminating exhibits connected to the criminal operation.

The corpses of the neutralized suspects have been deposited at a morgue for autopsy in line with standard procedure, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing members of the syndicate.

All recovered exhibits have been secured, while investigation continues to unravel the full network of the gang and facilitate prosecution of the arrested suspects.

The visit, carried out on Friday, aligns with the 2026 corporate strategic goals of the FRSC aimed at reducing road traffic crash fatalities and injuries by 10 per cent through strategic interventions and sustained stakeholders’ engagement.

During the inspection tour, Corps Commander Ogunjobi conducted on-the-spot monitoring of traffic situations from Sagamu Interchange to Ijebu Ode, where he interacted with operational personnel and commanding officers deployed along the corridor.

The Sector Commander also visited the ongoing road construction site being handled by CBC Global Construction. He commended the company for the progress recorded on the project and urged the management to provide additional road signages within construction zones to safeguard motorists and other road users.

Ogunjobi further stressed the need for the installation of guardrails at the Ososa Triple Bridge to enhance safety along the busy corridor.
He equally solicited stronger collaboration and support from the construction company towards effective road safety administration and improved service delivery in line with the mandate of the Corps.

Responding, the Project Supervisor of the company, Engineer Adebajo, appreciated the visit and assured the FRSC of the company’s commitment to supporting all necessary road safety measures towards achieving safer highways.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the incident occurred along the Agoro/Okunowa Road axis of Ijebu-Ode, prompting immediate intervention by the Ogun State Government and security agencies.

The statement explained that operatives on patrol received reports concerning a suspected chemical emission affecting residents and students around the area, leading to the swift deployment of tactical and surveillance teams from Obalende Division to the affected locations.

The Police Command noted that the Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, immediately directed the deployment of the Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit and other tactical response teams to secure the area, support emergency operations and maintain public safety.

The Ogun State Government has confirmed the detection of elevated methane gas concentration in parts of Ijebu-Ode following Friday’s mysterious odour incident that disrupted academic activities in several schools and caused panic among residents.
The State Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Ola Oresanya, disclosed this in a statement issued in Abeokuta, saying the Air Quality Monitoring Device installed at Ijebu Ode Grammar School recorded high methane concentrations within its monitoring coverage area.
According to the Commissioner, peak methane readings of approximately 13,500 parts per million were detected in surrounding locations affected by the strange smell.
Oresanya explained that the deployment of the air quality monitoring device at Ijebu Ode Grammar School forms part of the State Government’s continuous environmental surveillance programme aimed at ensuring early detection of abnormal air quality conditions and supporting timely public health interventions.
He, however, noted that although the recorded methane concentration remained below the lower explosive limit, the level was environmentally significant and required immediate technical investigation as well as precautionary measures.
The Commissioner said the State Government had consequently activated a multi-agency environmental and public health assessment team comprising environmental regulators, emergency response agencies and technical air quality experts.
He stated that the team had been mandated to determine the source of the emissions, assess the spatial extent and exposure risks, as well as evaluate associated gases such as hydrogen sulphide, volatile organic compounds and other relevant air quality parameters.
Friday’s incident triggered panic across parts of Ijebu-Ode as students in some public and private schools reportedly experienced breathing difficulties and other health-related symptoms linked to the offensive odour.

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Ogun Area 1 Command, has intercepted 10,126 parcels of Cannabis Indica, popularly known as Ghana Loud, with an estimated street value of over N5 billion.
The seizure came barely 41 days after the command handed over 2,543 parcels of cannabis sativa to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Idiroko Special Command.
The Acting Customs Area Comptroller, Mr Olukayode Afeni, disclosed this on Tuesday during a press briefing held at the Sentry Idiroko Border Post.
Afeni said the command recorded 73 seizures within five weeks, involving various prohibited and smuggled items intercepted at different locations across Ogun State.
Items seized include 26 sacks of raw cannabis sativa, 1,759 bags of 50kg foreign parboiled rice, 2,685 kegs of 25 litres and 16 kegs of two litres of vegetable oil, as well as 16 kegs containing 14,550 litres of Premium Motor Spirit stored in jerrycans.
Others are 77 cartons of 500mg Analgin injection without NAFDAC registration numbers, 216 cartons of 20kg Basmati rice, 205 packs of footwear, 66 bales of secondhand clothing, 46 bags of foreign sugar, used vehicles, ladies’ handbags, cartons of organic honey, packs of macaroni, sacks of spaghetti and six live pangolins already handed over to the appropriate agency.
According to the acting comptroller, the seizures underscored the command’s commitment to combating smuggling, protecting the nation’s economy and dismantling criminal networks involved in illegal trade.
Afeni expressed concern over the harmful effects of illicit drugs, especially on youths, noting that drug abuse fuels crimes such as armed robbery, kidnapping, cultism, terrorism and banditry.
“We remain resolute in our duty to ensure that Ogun State and the nation at large remain a hostile environment for those who seek to undermine our economic stability,” he said.
“Through enhanced intelligence and inter-agency cooperation, the Command intercepted 73 seizures in just five weeks. The cumulative Duty Paid Value of the seized items is N6.77 billion.”
He added that from January till date, the command had intercepted 26,002 parcels of cannabis, describing the seizures as a preventive measure against a potential rise in drug-related crimes and health challenges.
Afeni further disclosed that the command generated and remitted N125.4 million into the Federation Account between March 16 and May 12, 2026, through baggage assessment and auction of seized petroleum products.
The acting comptroller reaffirmed the command’s commitment to the safety and wellbeing of residents and called for greater public cooperation in the fight against smuggling and economic sabotage.
He later handed over the seized hard drugs to the Commander of the NDLEA Idiroko Special Command, Mr Ekundayo Williams, while commending sister security agencies and stakeholders for their support and collaboration.

Three persons have been abducted by suspected bandits who invaded a residential estate in the Ijebu-Ode area of Ogun State.
The victims, identified as two women and a man believed to be members of the same family, were reportedly kidnapped on Monday evening when about 15 armed men stormed Ipojo Golden Estate in the Oke-Eri area at about 7 p.m.
According to eyewitness accounts, the gunmen, armed with sophisticated weapons, forcefully gained entry into a residence within the estate, ransacked the building and whisked away the victims.
It was gathered that the head of the affected family, Mr Yesiru Badewa, was away on official duty at the time of the incident.
Speaking with journalists, Badewa expressed concern over the development, noting that one of the abducted victims was ill.
“This has devastated us. One of those taken is sick, and we are worried her condition may deteriorate in captivity. We appeal to the authorities and kind-hearted Nigerians to come to our aid,” he said.
Confirming the incident, the Ogun State Police Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the Command had intensified tactical and intelligence operations to rescue the victims and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
According to him, the Command remains committed to tackling kidnapping and other violent crimes across the state.

Governor Abiodun made this known during an unscheduled inspection visit to the 4-megawatt gas-fired Independent Power Plant located in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
The governor explained that the audit would help the state government monitor electricity generation and distribution from the facility, while also identifying areas of leakage, wastage, and energy theft within the power system.
He noted that the initiative became imperative following the increased authority granted to states in electricity generation, transmission, and distribution.
Abiodun described stable electricity as a critical driver of industrialisation and economic development, stressing that the 4-megawatt facility, established under the Ogun State Light-Up Project, would significantly support the state’s drive towards energy self-sufficiency.
According to him, no part of the state would be left underserved as efforts are being intensified to guarantee improved electricity supply for residents and businesses.
The governor further revealed that both the 34-megawatt power plant at Onijanganjangan and the Oke-Mosan facility were designed with expansion capacity, adding that the state had also upgraded its power distribution infrastructure to enhance efficiency.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to sustainable development, Abiodun stated that ongoing investments in the power sector were strategically targeted at ensuring stable and affordable electricity supply across Ogun State.
“What you see behind me is a gas-fired Independent Power Plant currently generating four megawatts. It doesn’t get cleaner than this,” the governor said.
“This installation reflects our resolve to fulfil our promises to the people without unnecessary noise. We are committed to delivering results.”
He criticised the continued reliance on outdated fuel-oil-powered plants, describing it as unacceptable in the 21st century.
“You cannot compare this with some power plants that have remained idle for over 16 years while operating on fuel oil. Such outdated systems have no place in modern energy planning,” he added.
Governor Abiodun also announced that the newly inaugurated Ogun State Electricity Regulatory Commission would oversee electricity generation, transmission, and distribution activities within the state.
He added that the state government’s investments in the power sector were aimed at attracting more investors and strengthening Ogun’s position as Nigeria’s leading industrial hub.
“Ogun State already enjoys several comparative and competitive advantages, but our ultimate goal is to make the state the preferred destination where investors are guaranteed 24-hour electricity supply at the most affordable rates in Nigeria,” the governor stated.

The Ogun State Police Command has foiled a truck hijacking operation in Ijebu North Local Government Area of the state, recovering a stolen DAF truck loaded with motor spare parts as well as a wooden-fabricated rifle allegedly used by the suspects during the operation.

According to the statement, detectives attached to the Ijebu Imushin Division swiftly responded to a distress call in the early hours of Wednesday, May 6, 2026, following the hijacking of the truck by suspected hoodlums.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the truck driver was conveying motor spare parts when he was intercepted at the Oke-Ado area of Ijebu North Local Government Area by armed suspects who forcefully dispossessed him of the vehicle.
The statement explained that upon receiving the report, detectives in collaboration with highway patrol operatives immediately mobilised to the scene, mounting pressure on the hoodlums who subsequently abandoned the truck and fled.
“The prompt intervention of the police effectively thwarted the criminal operation and prevented the loss of property,” the statement noted.
The driver, who sustained a minor injury to his right ankle during the attack, was reportedly given immediate first aid treatment by the police.
A thorough search conducted on the recovered truck led to the discovery of a wooden-fabricated rifle wrapped with black tape, allegedly used by the suspects to intimidate the victim during the operation.
The Command disclosed that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects and bring them to justice.

The pilgrims landed at the King Abdulaziz International Airport at about 4:15 a.m. (Nigerian time) after departing the Gateway International Airport at 11:00 p.m. on Sunday.

The contingent comprised 345 pilgrims—151 males and 194 females—alongside officials of the Ogun State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board. Upon arrival, they were received by Saudi Hajj authorities and airport officials, after which they underwent immigration and security procedures before being conveyed to their hotel accommodations in Medina to prepare for the Hajj rites.

The departure marked both the commencement of the 2026 Hajj operations at Gateway International Airport and the facility’s first international flight since its commissioning on April 4, 2026, by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Speaking ahead of the inaugural flight, Governor Dapo Abiodun described the journey as the first 4,600-kilometre nonstop international flight from Iperu, noting that it reflects his administration’s commitment to infrastructure development and economic expansion.

“What we celebrate today goes far beyond the arrival and departure of an international aircraft; it is a testament to focus, determination, resilience, commitment, sacrifice, and teamwork,” the governor said.

He added that the development would enhance connectivity and position Ogun State as a hub for commerce and global interaction, while appreciating President Tinubu for his support in ensuring the timely completion of the airport.
Abiodun also commended the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria for designating the airport as one of the centres for Hajj operations, and urged the pilgrims to be worthy ambassadors of Nigeria by obeying the laws of Saudi Arabia and conducting themselves with discipline and integrity.

In his remarks, NAHCON Chairman, Ismail Yusuf, represented by the Commissioner for Hajj Operations, Alhaji Olanrewaju Elegushi, said the new departure point would ease logistics and significantly reduce travel time for pilgrims.

He noted that Gateway International Airport is the first state-owned facility in South-West Nigeria cleared for Hajj operations without limitations, attributing the achievement to its modern infrastructure.

The Amir Hajj 2026, Shamsideen Apelogun, described the pilgrimage as a spiritual privilege and urged pilgrims to uphold the image of the state and the country.

Also speaking, the Olowu of Owu, Oba Saka Matemilola, and the Chief Imam of Gbagura, Prof. Emeritus Kamaldeen Balogun, commended the project, noting that it has eliminated the stress of travelling to Lagos for international departures.

On behalf of the pilgrims, Dr. Muritala Ejalonibu described the experience as historic, while several travellers expressed excitement at being among the first passengers to depart from the new airport.

ABEOKUTA. Operatives of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested two suspected cattle rustlers and recovered a stolen cow valued at ₦1.7 million, alongside other exhibits, in a swift response operation in the Ifo/Ibogun axis of the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ogun State Command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed this in a statement, noting that the suspects, identified as Muhammed Monsur and Olaseinde Olatunji, were apprehended following a distress call from a farmer.
According to the statement, the incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, April 30, 2026, at about 2:30 a.m., when suspected rustlers invaded a dairy farm at Omitoro Village via Coker, Ifo/Ibogun, and made away with a cow.
Babaseyi explained that upon receiving the alert, SWAT operatives promptly mobilised to the scene and intercepted the suspects, who attempted to flee in a mini bus popularly known as “Korope,” after their suspicious movement raised an alarm.
Items recovered from the suspects include the stolen cow, a knife, and the operational vehicle used in carrying out the crime.
Preliminary investigations, the PPRO said, revealed that the suspects belong to a four-man gang, while two other accomplices escaped into the surrounding bush.
“The operational vehicle has been secured at the Ibogun SWAT office, while the recovered cow was documented for evidential purposes and released to the owner after due care,” the statement added.
Babaseyi further disclosed that the suspects are currently in custody, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing members of the gang, assuring that the case will be transferred to the appropriate investigative unit for further action and prosecution.

ABEOKUTA - The five (5) students of Gateway Polytechnic, Sapade, who were rescued from their abductors during a coordinated intelligence-led operation by the Ogun State Police Command, have been formally handed over to the institution’s management for necessary administrative procedures after receiving medical attention.

The handover followed their evacuation, debriefing, and treatment at the Police Hospital, Abeokuta, where they were confirmed to be in stable condition after the traumatic incident.

According to a press release issued and signed by the Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, CP Bode Ojajuni, psc, FCSS, MNIPR, the successful rescue operation was achieved through swift coordination and sustained tactical pressure on the kidnappers.

CP Ojajuni disclosed that the incident occurred on April 27, 2026, at about 10:55 p.m., when Ipara Division received a distress call reporting a suspected kidnapping in the Sapade area. He explained that a patrol team was immediately deployed to the scene, where an ash-coloured Toyota vehicle with bullet impacts and blood stains was discovered abandoned. Mobile phones and other personal belongings were also recovered at the scene.

Further investigation revealed an identity card belonging to a student of Gateway Polytechnic, confirming that the victims were students of the institution, which prompted the immediate escalation of the incident and activation of a full-scale rescue operation.

The Police Commissioner noted that, acting on his directive, tactical teams comprising operatives from Isara Area Command, Ipara Division, SWAT, Anti-Kidnapping Unit, Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), Quick Response Squad (QRS), and OP MESA were mobilised for a coordinated response.
He added that on April 28, 2026, at about 3:00 p.m., the joint operatives embarked on sustained bush-combing and intelligence-led tracking operations along suspected escape routes, including the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and Fidiwo axis in Obafemi Owode Local Government Area.

CP Ojajuni stated that the sustained pressure led to the successful rescue of the five abducted students. He further revealed that during the operation, the kidnappers engaged police operatives in a gun duel but were overpowered by superior firepower, forcing them to flee with suspected gunshot injuries. No casualty was recorded among the police personnel.

He commended the gallantry, professionalism, and swift coordination of all tactical units involved, describing the operation as a product of effective intelligence-driven policing.
The Commissioner of Police also assured residents of the state that bush-combing operations are ongoing to track, arrest, and bring the fleeing suspects to justice.

Meanwhile, the rescued students have been formally released to the management of Gateway Polytechnic, Sapade, for further care and administrative follow-up.

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has ordered decisive disciplinary action against officers involved in the fatal shooting of a civilian in Effurun, Delta State, describing the act as criminal and a violation of police regulations.

Addressing journalists on Wednesday at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, the IGP said the incident, which occurred on April 26, 2026, resulted in the death of Mene Ogidi. He identified the principal officer involved as Assistant Superintendent of Police, Nuhu Usman, noting that his actions amounted to an extra-judicial killing and a betrayal of the oath of office.

Disu disclosed that all officers connected to the incident were immediately transferred from the Delta State Command to Abuja to ensure a thorough and impartial investigation.

According to him, the Force Disciplinary Committee reviewed the case involving senior officers, while junior personnel underwent an Orderly Room Trial. Findings from the investigation revealed that ASP Usman violated Force Order 247, which governs the use of firearms, as well as established operational procedures.

The IGP stressed that no level of suspicion justifies the unlawful killing of any citizen, insisting that such conduct has no place in the Nigeria Police Force.

Following the review, the disciplinary bodies recommended the dismissal of ASP Usman and other officers implicated in the incident. The IGP added that the affected officers would be handed over to appropriate judicial authorities for prosecution after the dismissal is ratified by the Police Service Commission.

Reaffirming the Force’s zero-tolerance stance on misconduct and abuse of power, Disu said the actions of the officers do not reflect the core values of the police.

He extended condolences to the family of the deceased and assured Nigerians that justice would be served, urging residents of Delta State to remain calm and law-abiding.

“The era of impunity is over. Every officer will be held accountable under the law,” the IGP stated.

The inauguration, scheduled for Saturday, May 3, 2026, is expected to draw key stakeholders, party faithful, youth groups, and political actors from across the state, marking what organisers describe as a strategic convergence of progressive forces.

Speaking on the development, the State Coordinator of the movement, Hon. Segun Kaka, said the YPM was conceived as a formidable platform to coordinate mobilisation and ensure effective engagement with the electorate across all strata of society.

Kaka noted that the movement is not merely symbolic but structured to play a decisive role in shaping the political direction of the state. He emphasised that its widespread grassroots network and organisational depth position it as a critical factor in the evolving political landscape of Ogun.

ABEOKUTA — Despite the reported adoption of Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, as the All Progressives Congress (APC) consensus candidate for Ogun East Senatorial District, former governor of the state and incumbent senator, Gbenga Daniel, has picked up his nomination and Expression of Interest forms to seek re-election in the 2027 general elections.

Daniel confirmed the development on Tuesday, stating that his decision was informed by a desire to sustain effective and responsive representation for the people of Ogun East at the National Assembly.

“Today, I picked up my nomination and Expression of Interest forms as I seek to return to the Nigerian Senate, continuing my efforts to provide effective and responsive representation for the people of Ogun East Senatorial District under the platform of the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections,” he said.

The development comes amid rising political tension within the APC in Ogun East, following the reported endorsement of Governor Abiodun as the party’s consensus candidate for the senatorial seat.

The endorsement was said to have been reached during a stakeholders’ meeting held in Ijebu Ode, a move that has generated mixed reactions among party members. Notably, the sitting senator was absent from the meeting where the consensus arrangement was reportedly agreed upon.
