By Our Correspondent A legal practitioner and public policy analyst, Liborous Oshoma, has said the Federal Government cannot lawfully implement the proposed reforms to the National Youth Service Corps without first amending the Act establishing the scheme and obtaining the approval of the National Assembly. Oshoma stated this on Monday during an interview on Frontline, a current affairs programme on Eagle 102.5 FM, Ilese-Ijebu, Ogun State, while reacting to the Federal Executive Council's approval of sweeping reforms to the 53-year-old scheme. President Bola Tinubu had, after the June 30 meeting of the Federal Executive Council, approved what the government described as the most comprehensive overhaul of the NYSC since its establishment. Among the proposals are the extension of the orientation course from three to six weeks and the introduction of 11 specialised service streams to improve leadership development, career readiness and vocational training for corps members. Reacting to the development, Oshoma maintained that although reforms had become necessary to reposition the scheme, the Federal Government could not alter the statutory framework of the NYSC through executive action alone because the organisation was established by an Act of the National Assembly. "First and foremost, the NYSC is a creation of law. If you want to reform it, those reforms must also take the form of an amendment to the law. Certainly, the Federal Government cannot introduce reforms to the NYSC unilaterally without amending the Act," he said. The legal practitioner explained that while the government could make administrative adjustments that do not conflict with existing legislation, any provision expressly contained in the NYSC Act must be amended through the legislative process. He cited the appointment of the Director-General as an example, noting that where the law prescribes that the office should be occupied by a serving military officer, such a provision cannot be altered without an amendment to the Act. He also called for extensive consultations before any amendment is forwarded to the National Assembly, urging the government to engage universities, corps members, youth organisations and other stakeholders to build consensus. According to him, reforms affecting young Nigerians would enjoy greater public acceptance if those directly impacted were allowed to contribute meaningfully to the process. Oshoma criticised what he described as the recurring practice of older political leaders making far-reaching decisions for young people without adequately seeking their input. He argued that the voices of corps members, students and other young Nigerians should shape any meaningful reform of the NYSC, adding that wider participation would strengthen public confidence in the eventual outcome. The public policy analyst further attributed the widespread suspicion surrounding the proposed reforms to a growing trust deficit between the government and the citizens. According to him, many Nigerians now approach government initiatives with scepticism, often interpreting them through the lenses of ethnicity, religion and politics rather than evaluating their actual merits. On the controversy surrounding the proposed introduction of locally produced fabrics such as Adire into the NYSC uniform, Oshoma urged Nigerians to focus on the economic benefits rather than ethnic considerations. He argued that patronising indigenous textiles would stimulate local manufacturing, create jobs, revive Nigeria's struggling textile industry and reduce dependence on imported materials. While insisting that no final decision had been taken on replacing the traditional khaki uniform, he maintained that any reform capable of strengthening local industries and promoting national development deserved objective consideration instead of ethnic or political controversy.

The suspects, including a 22-year-old identified by the police as the principal suspect and two alleged accomplices, were arrested after forensic investigations reportedly linked them to the crime. By Our Correspondent No fewer than 10 persons lost their lives, while six others sustained varying degrees of injuries in a road crash involving a truck and a commercial bus at Sapade Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Sunday night. The Federal Road Safety Corps, Ogun Sector Command, disclosed that the fatal crash occurred at about 8:05 p.m. and involved a white Sinotruk (CNHTC) Dangote truck with an unknown registration number and a white Toyota Hiace bus marked EKY 290 YM. According to a statement issued by the Public Education Officer of the Ogun Sector Command, Afolabi Odunsi, on behalf of the Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, and made available to journalists by the command's spokesperson, a total of 18 persons were involved in the crash. Odunsi stated that the victims comprised 15 adult males, two adult females and one male child. He said 10 persons, including nine adult males and one male child, died in the crash, while six others comprising four adult males and two adult females sustained injuries. Two adult males escaped unhurt. The FRSC spokesperson attributed the crash to excessive speed, wrongful overtaking and dangerous driving. According to him, preliminary findings revealed that the truck driver allegedly reversed on the highway after missing his route, while the approaching bus, travelling at high speed, attempted to manoeuvre through the limited space and rammed into the truck. He also cautioned motorists, particularly commercial drivers and truck operators, against reversing on highways, speeding, dangerous driving and other traffic violations capable of causing avoidable loss of lives. The command said the operations formed part of sustained intelligence-led policing and the enforcement of the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, against vehicles operating without registration plates or with covered, altered or obscured number plates. The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed this in a statement on Friday, saying the enforcement exercise was carried out simultaneously across the state on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni. According to him, the exercise led to the interception of 89 vehicles and their drivers for violating the law, adding that the offenders were subjected to appropriate administrative and legal actions, including prosecution where necessary. Babaseyi explained that the initiative was designed to improve vehicle traceability, strengthen intelligence gathering, aid criminal investigations and deny criminals the anonymity often exploited in carrying out crimes. He added that the operation would be sustained across the state. The police spokesman also disclosed that operatives of the Ogere Divisional Headquarters, acting on credible intelligence in collaboration with personnel of the Ogun State So-Safe Corps, local vigilantes and residents, foiled an armed robbery operation at Akuro Phase I in Ogere Remo on Thursday. He said the armed men had invaded a residence and dispossessed occupants of two motorcycles, mobile phones, cash and other valuables before attempting to flee. "Through coordinated tactical deployment, the suspects abandoned the two stolen motorcycles and escaped into a nearby bush. "Subsequent operations led to the arrest of one suspect, while a knife, an expended cartridge and a broken padlock were recovered from the scene," Babaseyi said. He identified the arrested suspect as Abdulsalam Adam, adding that the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Eleweran, while efforts were ongoing to apprehend other members of the gang. In a related development, Babaseyi said operatives of the Ajuwon Division recovered a stolen Toyota Camry and arrested another robbery suspect following a distress call over an attack at Baale Akinosi area of Ajuwon. He said the robbers had carted away mobile phones, jewellery, power banks, a laptop computer, the vehicle and other valuables from the residence. According to him, the division's Anti-Crime Team immediately launched a manhunt, forcing the fleeing suspects to abandon the stolen vehicle during a hot pursuit. One of the suspects, identified as Israel Salako, was arrested, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend other members of the gang and recover the remaining stolen items. Babaseyi said the Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, commended officers involved in the operations for their professionalism, vigilance and prompt response to distress calls. He reaffirmed the command's commitment to intelligence-driven policing, sustained visibility patrols, strategic stop-and-search operations and stronger collaboration with residents to prevent crime. By Our Correspondent Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana (SAN), has asked the Federal Government to provide a comprehensive explanation on the controversy surrounding the alleged Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council, saying the Presidency's response failed to address critical issues raised by Nigerians. Falana, who spoke on Friday during an interview on Frontline, a current affairs programme on Eagle 102.5 FM, Ilese-Ijebu, Ogun State, said the official statement issued by the Presidency left several unanswered questions regarding the alleged existence and operations of the council. According to him, the government owes Nigerians a transparent account of how an agency it now describes as non-existent allegedly found its way into the nation's administrative and financial system. "Unfortunately, I think there is more to this matter than meets the eye. Nigerians have not been given the full facts. To say it very mildly, the country has been exposed to unprecedented ridicule. The government must come out more clearly on this matter," he said. Falana questioned how the alleged council, reportedly promoted by Adeniyi Adeyemi, was captured in the national budget, allocated office space within the Federal Secretariat, opened accounts with the Central Bank of Nigeria and allegedly had about 300 civil servants deployed to it despite lacking legal backing. "How did an agency that is not created by law find its way into the Appropriation Act of Nigeria? How did that body get an office in the Federal Secretariat? How did that body successfully open accounts in the Central Bank of Nigeria? How did the Head of Service post about 300 staff to that office?" he asked. The senior lawyer maintained that the controversy extends beyond the ongoing criminal prosecution of the alleged promoter of the council, insisting that relevant government institutions must also account for their roles. He also questioned the National Assembly over the reported inclusion of the agency in the 2026 Appropriation Act, stressing that agencies not established by law should not be captured in the federal budget. "You cannot have an agency that is not created by law in the budget of a country. The National Assembly members will have to explain who authorised them to insert the body into the budget," he said. Falana noted that appropriation bills originate from the Executive under Section 81 of the Constitution before being transmitted to the legislature, adding that the government must explain how the alleged council appeared in the budget. He described the Presidency's explanation as inadequate, saying it left "gaping holes" that only a thorough investigation could resolve. "If this is a conman that can con the Presidency into issuing a letter of appointment, con the Central Bank into opening accounts, con the National Assembly into inserting the agency into the budget, I think the government is kidding," he added. Falana further called for an independent investigation into the alleged involvement of the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, urging him to temporarily step aside to ensure a transparent probe. "The government has a duty to ask Mr. Gbajabiamila to step aside to allow for a full investigation in the interest of the country and even in his own interest," he said. While supporting the prosecution of the alleged promoter of the council, Falana argued that the courts would not resolve broader institutional questions surrounding the agency's alleged recognition and operations. "The law must be allowed to take its course. But there are issues that are not going to come up in court. The court is not going to tell us who opened an account in the Central Bank or who inserted the agency into the budget," he said. He urged the Federal Government to reopen its inquiry and involve all relevant agencies and officials to reassure Nigerians that there was no attempt to conceal the facts. "The government will have to revisit the matter, go back to the drawing board and issue another statement that will be acceptable to Nigerians by assuring them that there is no cover-up in this matter," he added. The controversy began after the Office of the Chief of Staff to the President issued a disclaimer on June 11, distancing the Presidency from the alleged Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council and its purported Director-General, Adeniyi Adeyemi Matthew. The Presidency maintained that no such agency exists under President Bola Tinubu's administration and described Adeyemi as an impostor allegedly parading forged appointment documents. However, the controversy intensified after documents from the 2026 Appropriation Act reportedly showed a budgetary allocation of about ₦1.3bn to an entity listed as the Presidential Economic Advisory Council/Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council, raising fresh questions about the budget process. The revered monarch made the appeal on Thursday while receiving the Osun State Resident Electoral Commissioner Mrs Oluwatoyin Babalola, and members of her management team at the Ile Oodua Palace in Ile-Ife. The meeting formed part of INEC's stakeholder engagement aimed at strengthening collaboration with traditional institutions ahead of the governorship election. Speaking during the visit, Babalola urged the Ooni to sustain his advocacy for peaceful elections by mobilising traditional rulers, community leaders and political actors to discourage violence and promote issue-based campaigns. She stressed that elections should never be viewed as warfare, urging eligible voters to make effective use of their Permanent Voter Cards instead of keeping them at home. The REC also warned against vote-buying, saying citizens who exchange their votes for money mortgage their future and weaken democratic governance. Responding, Ogunwusi assured the electoral commission that the traditional institution would continue to champion peace across communities in Osun State, insisting that no political ambition should be pursued at the expense of human lives. By Our Correspondent Operatives of the Ogun State Community, Social Orientation and Safety Corps, popularly known as So-Safe Corps, have foiled an alleged cult attack on Methodist High School, Arigbajo, in the Ewekoro Local Government Area of the state, arresting four suspects. The Director of Information and Public Relations of the corps, Assistant Commander of Corps Adegunwa Adegbuyi, disclosed this in a statement issued on behalf of the State Commander, Cmdr. (Dr.) Soji Ganzallo. Adegbuyi said the incident occurred at about 12 noon on Monday, June 29, following a distress call that a group of suspected armed cultists had invaded the school premises and were attacking students and members of staff. He said operatives of the corps were immediately mobilised to the scene, where they confronted the hoodlums, who were allegedly armed with machetes, knives, charms and other dangerous weapons. According to him, the swift intervention of the officers forced the suspects to flee the school, preventing any casualties among students and teachers. "The tactical response of our operatives successfully repelled the attackers and ensured that no student or member of staff was injured during the incident," the statement read. Adegbuyi said four suspects were arrested during a hot pursuit, while others escaped. He disclosed that three of the suspects are students of Papa High School, Ewekoro, comprising one Senior Secondary School Three (SSS3) student and two Senior Secondary School Two (SSS2) students, while the fourth suspect is a 16-year-old scrap metal collector. He added that a cutlass was recovered from the suspects, while other fleeing members of the group allegedly escaped with additional weapons. The spokesperson said the suspects and the recovered exhibit had been handed over to the Nigeria Police Force, Itori Divisional Headquarters, for further investigation and possible prosecution. Adegbuyi quoted the State Commander as reiterating the corps' zero-tolerance stance against cultism and violence in schools. He also urged parents and guardians to closely monitor the activities and associations of their children and wards to discourage involvement in criminal activities. According to investigators, Adeyemi allegedly operated an illegal office within the Federal Secretariat in Abuja, forged official documents and appointment letters, falsified Gbajabiamila's signature, and hosted foreign diplomats while posing as the head of the fictitious agency. Police investigators also alleged that the suspect operated 34 bank accounts, including nine linked to fake government agencies, while a criminal charge has been filed against him before the Federal High Court in Abuja. The trial is expected to commence on July 27. Reacting to the development, Ayanga argued that the Presidency's public exoneration of the Chief of Staff was premature, insisting that only the judiciary could determine whether the allegations had merit. "Femi Gbajabiamila will have to step down until this whole mess is cleared because the matter has not been concluded," he said. Those are institutional failures that must be addressed," he said. Responding to reports that some schools were planning graduation ceremonies for pupils moving from one class to another, the commissioner insisted that the state would not tolerate violations of its regulations. "The directive is for all schools, public or private, as long as the school is approved by the state government. We are the regulators, and any school that violates the directive does so at its own risk," he said. The government had prohibited graduation ceremonies for non-terminal classes following complaints by parents over what it described as excessive and compulsory levies imposed by schools for end-of-session celebrations. Arigbabu added that teachers' welfare had improved considerably, with prompt salary payments and the clearance of promotion backlogs inherited by the administration. He disclosed that Ogun's education reforms had attracted interest from no fewer than five states seeking to understudy the initiatives with a view to replicating them. The commissioner also said Ogun had emerged as a national leader in the deployment of technology in education, noting that its Learner Identification Number initiative had been adopted as a model by the Federal Government. He highlighted the introduction of OgunLearn, an artificial intelligence-powered teaching and learning platform, describing it as the first of its kind in the country. Kurfi, who spoke on Tuesday during an interview on Frontline, a current affairs programme on Eagle 102.5 FM, Ilese-Ijebu, Ogun State, said authorities must transparently investigate allegations that some bandit commanders travelled to Saudi Arabia for Hajj and claims that some of them were allegedly sponsored by state governments. He maintained that the claims remained allegations and should either be substantiated or disproved by the government. "I said there is an allegation that some bandit commanders were in Saudi Arabia and that some were sponsored by state governments. The government should come out to prove or disprove the allegations. Nobody said they were confirmed," he said. Kurfi, a former lecturer at the School of Business, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, recalled that the controversy followed an interview he granted to Trust TV, where he raised concerns over the alleged presence of bandit leaders in Saudi Arabia during the pilgrimage. According to him, while the Katsina State Commissioner for Internal Security initially dismissed the allegation, the Minister of Interior later confirmed that suspected terrorists were arrested on their return through the Katsina airport. "The commissioner first said nothing like that happened. About 24 hours later, the Minister of Interior confirmed that suspected terrorists were arrested at the Katsina airport after returning from Mecca," he said. Kurfi questioned how persons suspected of terrorism could complete the rigorous Hajj registration and screening process without being identified by security agencies. He explained that intending pilgrims undergo several stages of verification, including documentation, authentication by local government authorities and orientation programmes before travelling. "How can all these processes be completed without detecting such individuals if the intelligence system is effective?" he queried. The security expert also criticised the alleged sponsorship of Hajj with public funds, insisting that such a practice would contradict Islamic teachings if it involved religious leaders or other beneficiaries. According to him, Islam prescribes that only those who can personally afford the pilgrimage should perform it. He further warned that allowing individuals linked to terrorism to undertake international religious travel could expose Nigeria to greater security threats, including possible links with foreign extremist groups. Kurfi urged security agencies to intensify the screening of all returning pilgrims across the country to prevent security breaches. Speaking on the evolution of banditry in northern Nigeria, he described bandits as criminal elements who initially engaged in cattle rustling before expanding into kidnapping for ransom and collaborating with terrorist organisations for logistics and financial gains. He said many of the groups operate from forests, launching attacks on travellers and communities while carrying out kidnappings and other violent crimes. To illustrate the brutality of the attacks, Kurfi recounted the ordeal of a theatre nurse in his village whose wife, infant twins and five-year-old son were abducted by bandits. He said the family spent about two months in captivity despite the payment of a N5m ransom, while the kidnappers allegedly demanded an additional N1m before releasing the young boy. According to him, the child returned with multiple cigarette burn injuries inflicted during captivity. Kurfi argued that most bandits are not foreigners but people from the affected communities, making the challenge more difficult to tackle. The suspects were arrested following an intensive investigation that also led to the recovery of the deceased's stolen Lexus RX 330 Sports Utility Vehicle. Confirming the development in a statement on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Ogun State Command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the arrests followed a coordinated intelligence-driven operation ordered by the Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni. According to the statement, the incident was reported at the Owode-Egba Police Station on June 21, 2026, after concerned residents observed suspicious activities at the residence of the deceased. "The front door of the residence had been partially damaged while the security house within the compound was found locked, prompting immediate police intervention," the statement said. Detectives who arrived at the scene discovered the lifeless body of the security guard, Pelumi Adetayo, inside the security house, while Madam Oyesiku was found lying in a pool of blood in the living room of the main building. Preliminary investigations further revealed that the deceased's Lexus RX 330 vehicle was missing from the premises, raising strong suspicions of robbery and murder. The Command thereafter launched an extensive investigation involving intelligence gathering, forensic analysis and technical tracking aimed at identifying those responsible and recovering the stolen vehicle. DSP Babaseyi disclosed that operatives successfully traced and recovered the missing Lexus RX 330 on June 22, 2026. Although the vehicle's ignition key had been removed and its registration number plates detached, investigators reportedly recovered one of the number plates hidden beneath a seat, enabling them to confirm the vehicle's ownership. The police spokesman further revealed that a handwritten note allegedly left behind by the perpetrators at the crime scene became a major breakthrough in the investigation. According to him, forensic examination of the note generated critical leads that assisted detectives in tracking down the suspects. The breakthrough led to the arrest of the principal suspect, Sodeinde Olajuwon Philip, 22, at a construction site in Ibara GRA, Abeokuta, on June 24. Subsequent operations also led to the arrest of two alleged accomplices identified as Sakirudeen Abdulraheem Ayoola, 27, and Sobu Obafunsho, 36. Police investigations revealed that the three suspects allegedly conspired to carry out the attack that resulted in the deaths of Madam Oyesiku and her security guard. During interrogation, the principal suspect reportedly confessed to participating in the crime and admitted recruiting the other two suspects. He allegedly told investigators that he planned the attack because of grievances he had against the deceased during the period he worked as a security guard in her employment. "The suspect stated that the murder of Madam Olakitan Oyesiku was intended to teach her a lesson," the statement noted. Investigators further disclosed that the suspects allegedly struck on June 20 after overpowering the security guard and using him to gain access to the residence. They allegedly attacked the retired broadcaster before killing the security guard and escaping with the victim's vehicle. The stolen Lexus was later recovered in the Onikolobo area of Abeokuta through intelligence-led and technical tracking operations. Further searches conducted at locations linked to the suspects reportedly led to the recovery of a broken hammer, a cutlass, a plank, a black pen and other exhibits believed to be connected to the crime. The police, however, stressed that investigations were still ongoing and that all suspects remain entitled to due process under the law. The Command reiterated its determination to ensure that justice is served and that all persons connected with the heinous crime are brought to book.

The professor argued that policing is traditionally a state responsibility in federal systems and lamented what he described as the excessive concentration of powers at the centre. “State police is something that was long overdue. It is a natural part of federalism to have state police and state control of institutions such as the judiciary. We are a federal system and every federal system operates a division of responsibilities among different levels of government,” he said. According to him, Nigeria's highly centralised policing structure has weakened the autonomy of state governments and limited their ability to respond effectively to security challenges within their jurisdictions. “We have abused federalism in Nigeria for so long. State police is a natural offshoot of federalism if you truly operate a federal system,” he stated. Citing a recent kidnapping incident in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, Otubanjo noted that governors currently lack effective control over security agencies operating within their states despite being designated as chief security officers. “There is a problem in Oyo State, but the governor does not control the security situation. He cannot direct the police to act, let alone the military. Yet he is expected to take responsibility for security in the state,” he said. The professor maintained that a state police structure would improve operational flexibility and strengthen the capacity of states and regional security outfits to combat crime. “Federal police have often restricted the activities of other security organisations, claiming they lack the authority to operate. State police will create opportunities for more flexible and effective security operations,” he added. While acknowledging concerns that governors could misuse state police for political purposes, Otubanjo said such fears should not derail a reform that has become necessary. “There will be rough edges at the beginning. There may be jurisdictional conflicts and even attempts by some governors to use the police against political opponents. But those challenges can be addressed through legal safeguards and constitutional provisions,” he said. He expressed confidence that the system would evolve over time and that institutional checks would help prevent abuse. “We have to start. Gradually, we will work out all the rough edges. State police is an idea whose time has long been overdue,” he added. Otubanjo explained that under the proposed arrangement, state police would handle crimes committed within state boundaries, while the federal police would focus on interstate crimes and national security matters. “The state police system creates a division of labour. The head of the state police is responsible to the governor, making the governor the chief security officer not only in name but also in practice,” he said. Drawing comparisons with other federal systems around the world, the professor noted that countries such as the United States, India and Germany operate decentralised policing structures successfully. “The United States even has police units attached to universities. If they cannot handle a situation, they escalate it to city or metropolitan police. That is how federal systems work,” he explained. Otubanjo also stressed the need for professionalism and merit-based appointments if the proposed system is to succeed. “There must be sincerity and commitment to the ethics of policing. Appointments should not be based on family ties or political affiliation. Politics must not be allowed to undermine the system,” he said. He added that increased public scrutiny, social media oversight and democratic accountability would serve as safeguards against potential abuses. Responding to concerns raised by callers that insecurity had worsened under President Bola Tinubu's administration, Otubanjo cautioned against making conclusions without empirical evidence. “How do you know insecurity is increasing? According to him, many of the people migrating from northern communities to southern cities are fleeing poverty, unemployment and worsening living conditions rather than engaging in criminal activities. “A lot of the northerners that we see in Lagos and think are terrorists are actually economic migrants. They are running away from hopelessness and joblessness in the North because there is no new investment,” he said. The international relations scholar attributed the migration trend partly to the devastating effects of climate change across the Sahel region, noting that desertification and environmental degradation have destroyed livelihoods and displaced thousands of people. “We don't know how much climate change is creating havoc in terms of population and livelihood. A lot of people have lost their homes. They have lost their jobs because sand dunes have taken over their villages and communities. They are taking over their farms, and they are moving down,” he stated. While acknowledging that Nigeria faces serious security challenges, Otubanjo warned against equating migration with criminality, stressing that the vast majority of migrants are simply seeking better opportunities and safer living conditions. He, however, noted that the worsening security situation in parts of the Sahel has also contributed to the movement of armed groups across borders, making the region's security challenge increasingly complex. “The problem is that insurgency has become so international. It used to be Boko Haram alone, but it looks like insurgents are running away from different parts of the world, including Sudan. We are beginning to see Sudanese in Nigeria as bandits, coming to kidnap us,” he said. Otubanjo explained that ungoverned spaces and areas with limited government presence create opportunities for criminal groups to infiltrate communities and carry out attacks. “There are many places that have no presence of government. Everybody can walk in and take over for a couple of times. If government intervenes, those people will run away,” he added. The professor also defended ongoing efforts by the Federal Government and security agencies to combat terrorism and banditry, arguing that security operations require time, patience and sustained commitment. “There is a challenge of security in Nigeria, no doubt about it. We have not overcome it, but that is not to say that government is not doing what is necessary,” he said. He added that the fight against insurgency cannot be won overnight and urged Nigerians to appreciate the sacrifices being made by security personnel on the frontlines. “Soldiers are dying, and we must give it to them and pray that they will do better and get us out of this mess,” Otubanjo said.

Odulaja said any correspondence purportedly emanating from the council after the suspension should not be regarded as an official position of the kingmakers, stressing that members were neither consulted nor involved in the preparation of the letter allegedly authored by the Olisa. He also challenged Adesanya's claim of acting as chairman of the kingmakers' council, insisting that the position is occupied by the Ogbeni Oja of Ijebu-Ode, Chief Sonny Kuku. The police spokesman said the Commander of the VCRU immediately mobilised a combined team of operatives who stormed the location, dispersed the gathering and arrested the suspects. He stated that four vehicles allegedly abandoned by fleeing suspects were recovered during the operation. Items recovered at the scene included a jackknife, a local drum, a "sekere" (rattle) and several bottles suspected to have been used for alcohol consumption during the gathering. Babaseyi noted that the suspects had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation, adding that they would be charged in court upon the conclusion of investigations. He added that efforts were ongoing to track down other suspects who escaped during the raid. The Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, CP Bode Ojajuni, commended the operatives for their swift response and professionalism, describing the operation as a reflection of the Command's commitment to intelligence-driven policing and its determination to rid the state of cultism and other violent crimes. The police command also urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious gatherings and criminal activities to the nearest police formation.
