Onboard1:
Good evening everyone.
My small question goes like this.

I have MMF with Stanbic IBTC. Assuming the bank fails, how will it affect my investment?

Please note that your investment in stanbic MMF has nothing to do with stanbic ibtc bank.

When you invest in stanbic MMF you indirectly invest in Tbills and commercial papers of reputable companies. You can only lose your investment if Nigeria government default in their obligations to investors in TBills. The probability is near zero.
By the way, stanbic ibtc bank is not even the fund manager rather the fund is managed by stanbic asset management a different entity even though they in the same holdco with the bank.
All the cash invested in MMF don't even pass through stanbic, SEC will not allow that. The custodian bank is UBA.

@emmasoft.
Please what's the formula for calculating interest on mmf? e.g. Let's say principal of #7M with current interest rate of 20.91% will yield interest of how much?

Thanks

It's same formula for simple interest and then prorated to daily interest.

Using the capital stated, and with the assumption that rate was constant, no reinvestment, no top up or partial redemption for one year, here is your interest
I= 7m*20.91*1/100
I = 1,463,700 this is what you get for 1yr.
Daily you will have 1463700/365

4,010.14 is what you get daily.
But if you pick the option to reinvest the accrued interest you will have more even if the rate remains constant.

This is just estimate and with the assumptions already stated above.

Please I need investment advice.

I'm kinda stuck investing my $15000 funds with my bank in like a fixed deposit at 6% with very heavy penalty (80%) if terminated prematurely.

Please I need better alternative as I don't know any and how to go about it. This is my life saving so I'm kinda cautious so I don't lose it. The failure of Heritage bank and the abysmal NDIC coverage is making me have second thoughts about holding my investment in any Nigerian bank.

Is the amount I have too small to invest directly in USD denominated bonds?

If no, please how can I get started?

Please help copy other knowledgeable people here to guide me.

@joyful365. First you need to know your risk tolerance and be sure you can cope with the risk involve in any investment product you wish to invest in. Note that Eurobond is not a low risk investment there is some element of risk though it's moderate, even dollar fund has eurobonds as the underlying asset.

However, having a long term in view, dollar fund will be a good alternative.
You can go with Norrenberger Asset management for the dollar fund.

Get in touch for details on Norrenberger dollar fund.

@emmasoft thanks for that.

Well I left mmf then due to bad rates. When tbill rate was better. So now I’m thinking of doing mmf not sure the rates now.

I have got 2.5m in Tbills and thought of building a mmf account that I can build overtime too.

I guess I’ll see about that.

Yes . MMF rates are looking good right now. To go with Stanbic, click the first link on my signature.

Tbills or MMF?

Which to choose and why?

Some reasons why I will Prefer MMF to Tbills

You can start mmf with much lower amount compared to tbills. With 5,000 you can start investing in Stabbic mmf. The least for tbills is 100k.

When rate increases, it will not affect already invested funds in tbills but it does with mmf

You can't top up with tbills. Top up is very possible with mmf even if you want daily top up.

Terminating before tenor expiration in tbills comes with penalties. For mmf after just 30 days, exit is without penalties.

mmf has other instruments like commercial papers that contributes to its rate.

You can easily automate reinvestment of interest in mmf ie taking advantage of the power of compound interest.

It's the investor that determines mmf tenor hence you can hold mmf as long as you wish no restrictions, tbills particularly primary auction has fixed tenors 3 months, 6 months or 1 year.

Right now mmf rates is on the rise.

However, that is not to say Tbills is a bad investment. The one you pick MMF or TBills actually depends on the reason for investing among other factors which most times are peculiar to the investor.

Hmm. Investment one also? That's good. I used to have an account before the transition to GTco. Will it still be valid?

Investment One has always been involved in Tbills, it's just that this time, it has become part of their app and customers can now do it on their own.

Your account is still valid. Log in through the web portal using your customer number or registered email. Once you confirm that, you can download the app and log in with the same credentials. You don't need a fresh registration.

I don't see any other protocol here. We are just inefficient or many times just choose to be wicked in this Country.
I have always gotten my dividends, bonus shares/stock split and even voting rights immediately on due dates which is pre annouced, in all my foreign invested companies without making any effort.

@sophy17 I'm not defending inefficiency but the truth be told. We are not where we ought to be but we are also not where we used to be. I know other climes may be better but I believe with time everything will be real time. Take a look at the method of subscription in the current primary activities of the banks you will believe me that there is some improvement. Let's remain positive, we can get to our desired level in no distant time.

Someone is asking about the Dividend, it was paid yesterday/today.
Bonus can't be immediate, will be added to your CSCS much later.

Exactly! We said it severally here, when it comes to bonus payment dates, it's not always stated like cash dividend because other protocols are involved before the crediting of investors' cscs account, all you should be concerned about is whether you are qualified or not. Once you are qualified, there is nothing to worry about you will see the declared bonus in your cscs account unannounced.

Banks giving interim dividend need to audit their Q2 and get CBN approval. It will take a little more time.

Banks that opted for audited half-year results officially have 2 months (July and August) to submit.

I know bro but i do sell my shares on Ucap and my ucap account is credited almost instantly to allow me but another shares instantly.

I think @emmaodet, the usage of the term direct settlement/payment is not correctly applied. For any investor that opts for direct payment of sales proceeds, it can't go through your trading account it's sent to CSCS who will credit you after 3 days of your stock sales.

The fact that you didn't get your proceeds in your trading account, means you are currently on a direct settlement option.
You will need to opt out of it by completing the form and indicating your desired option.

Based on your first post, you explained the opposite of what you preferred.

@emmasoft

Kindly shed more light on this picture below.
I submitted a direct settlement form from Investment-One and now they replied me that i am not profiled for that and would be charged a whooping 26% of my withdrawal per annum or 5,000 per transaction.
I hope this is not a daylight robbery.

@emmaodet. This is what the mail you received means:

Currently, you didn't indicate direct settlement of your sales proceeds, please note that direct settlement doesn't mean you will get the proceeds of your sales same day. it will still follow the T+3 settlement period. What it simply means is that CSCS Plc will be the one to credit your bank account on the 3rd day after sales ie the proceeds don't go through your trading account with the broker (investment one)

The alternative given to you is the charge you will pay if you want your money before the stipulated settlement date, in this case, you are treated as a customer borrowing money from investment one. it's not robbery. Other firms also have their policy around that.

Just like Pa Emma said in his response, you don't pay anything if you wait for the T+3 settlement period or wish to use the proceeds to buy another stock even on the same day of sale of stock.

If you wish to opt for direct settlement, send a mail requesting the direct settlement form, complete it, and send it back to them, it will be processed and you will be getting your sales proceeds directly from cscs from now on.

Note also that this option is unfavorable if you sometimes want to use your sales proceeds to buy more stocks immediately and remember cscs will still follow the T+3 settlement period before you get credited.

Do they have a timeline on when they should file their results even with the suspension? Or will it just be left to them to do it at their own pace.

No timeline per se but they know that each day of the suspension attracts fine hence they will do everything at their reach to comply and release the outstanding results if they have to remain listed otherwise they just started their delisting journey.

I am being told to put in money first before I can get login details. Now my question is how will I know the money has entered the account when I can't see it on a dashboard?

Edit:: my login details was eventually sent last night. Thank you

Please, what does recurring debits mean under the save option?

Also can I transfer the fund from any bank( UBA in particular) to the e account. Because in the video tutorial. It is only standard ibtc that was emphasized

@Ukayo, Thanks for your feedback.
Recurring debit is an arrangement you can make with your bank to invest a specified amount in your MMF account on a particular date.
You can transfer funds from any of your bank accounts to your MMF account.

Please note that your e-account is not a bank account as such, you can't transfer money directly into it. rather you transfer any amount you wish to invest at any given time into the UBA collection account sent to you when your MMF account was opened. You only make sure your e-account is used as the narration/description anytime you transfer money to the UBA account.
