Nigerian Navy town class boats

Sokoto? Ibeno? These are town class boats.

The Nigerian Navy has a naming system for its vessels. Frigates are usually named thunder. For example, NNS Obuma (obuma = thunder in Efik), NNS Aradu (Aradu = thunder in Hausa), NNS Okpabana (okpabana - thunder in Igala), NNS Thunder (thunder = thunder in English).

Landing ship tanks are usually named after crocodiles, for example, NNS Ambe (ambe = crocodile in Tiv), NNS Offiom (offiom = crocodile in Efik) and NNS Kada (kada = crocodile in Hausa).

Our old corvettes, NNS Dorina (Hausa), NNS Otobo (Kalabari), NNS Erinomi (Yoruba) and NNS Enyimiri (Igbo) were also named after hippopotamus , while our new corvettes have English names (NNS Centenary, NNS Unity).

There is a class of patrol boats that are named after towns (and ethnic groups). Some famous examples include:

NNS Ibadan and NNS Ogoja: NNS Ibadan was a minesweeper/patrol boat that was involved in the Civil War. It was in Calabar at the start of the war, so the Biafran Navy seized it. It was commanded by P.J. Odu. The Biafran Navy renamed it BNS Vigilance.

NNS Ibadan was involved in a battle with NNS Ogoja near Bonny. NNS Ogoja was commanded by Akin Aduwo, who would later become the chief of naval staff during the Shagari era. NNS Ogoja severely damaged NNS Ibadan and it caught fire.

The interesting thing was that Akin Aduwo and Paschal Odu were classmates at the academy. Aduwo got on his ship's public address system and told Odu to surrender and he would not be harmed. Instead Odu jumped off the burning ship and swam into the bush. Aduwo saw Odu many years later and asked him why he didn't surrender. Didn't he know that he would not be harmed? Odu replied that he knew that Aduwo would never harm him, but he couldn't speak for Aduwo's subordinates.

The Nigerian Navy put out the fire on NNS Ibadan and towed it to Lagos to present it to General Gowon.

NNS Badagry: is a patrol boat. In 2013 it was engaged in a gun battle with pirates that had captured an oil tanker. The pirates tried to escape and NNS Badagry killed 12 of them before the remaining 4 surrendered.

NNS Andoni is the first made in Nigeria seaward defence boat.

NNS Karaduwa is another made in Nigeria seaward defence boat.

NNS Ibeno was commissioned by President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday.

Others include NNS Sokoto, NNS Oji, NNS Bonny, NNS Bomadi, NNS Burutu and NNS Ose.
Very enlightening and a good read. However, a slight correction. NNS CENTENARY and NNS UNITY are actually Offshore Patrol Vessels (P-18N) built to conduct maritime security operations. The distinct difference is that they do not have underwater warfare capabilities which is a peculiar feature of corvettes. The ship (NNS CENTENARY) which was built in China (2014) was named to mark 100 years of Nigeria's existence after the Amalgamation in 1914. In the same vein, NNS UNITY which was also built in China(2015) was named to symbolise the need for shared values, and social cohesion and promote a national identity notwithstanding our diversity as a people with different cultures and backgrounds.

Drefaithful:
The tradition in the military is that once the junior is made the Service chief, the senior will automatically bow out.

The COAS Is a 37RC, invariably All the 36RC will retire, this was the case when Lt Gen Faruk YAHYA took over, all the 36RC were preparing to leave, but CDS intervened by approved a course for all of them.

Perhaps, they are through with their programs and as such they will have to go.

Though I have their list.
Drefaithful has stated the authoritative reason why they have been asked to retire. It has nothing to do with tribalism or other spurious assertions.
PoliticsRe: Meet Emmanuel Ezugwu: Military War Vehicle Named After Him by EMPE: 12:21pm On Dec 04, 2019
OP that is a factual error.

The Ezugwu MRAP is named after the Director-General Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria, Maj Gen Victor Owudili Ezugwu in recognition
of his efforts at fostering Applied Research and Development in DICON and promotion of private-sector collaboration towards utilising Research and Development in the production of arms and equipment for the Armed Forces and other security agencies using global best practices.

Man sues parents for throwing away his $26K porn collection

From nypost.com

He’s got no shame. A Michigan man is suing his parents for $86,000 for allegedly throwing out his massive porn collection, according to a report. The family feud began in October 2016, when, following a divorce, the man moved back in with his parents in Grand Rapids Mich., — bringing with him his $29,000 smut stockpile, according to federal civil court documents obtained by local outlet WXMI. About 10 months later, the man, whose identity was withheld by the outlet, moved to a new home in Indiana and his parents sent him his belongings. That’s when he noticed his pornography pile — which consisted of over 12 moving boxes full of movies and ... (full story)

MrMcJay:
For state elections, you don't need 25% in two-thirds.
2) A candidate for an election to the office of Governor of a State shall be deemed to have been duly elected where, there being two or more candidates - (a) he has the highest number of votes cast at the election; and (b) he has not less than one-quarter of all the votes cast in each of at least two-thirds of all the local government areas in the State.

Nairaland GeneralThe Army's Killer Drones: How A Secretive Special Ops Unit Decimated ISIS by EMPE(op): 12:06am On Mar 08, 2019
As the Islamic State’s physical caliphate shrinks to nothing after an almost five-year campaign led by U.S. special operations forces, military insiders say one small unit has killed more of the extremists than any other: the company of Gray Eagle drones in the Army’s 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment.“They are doing the most killing of anyone in the national mission force,” said a former 160th officer, referring to Joint Special Operations Command, which runs counterterrorism task forces in Afghanistan, and does battle against the Islamic State in Iraq, Syria and the Horn of Africa. “They’re out there doing the nation’s bidding in a ferocious way.”

Echo Company’s achievements are remarkable, in part, because unlike the Air Force, whose drones are operated from air-conditioned trailers in Nevada and flown by officers, the pilots in this Army aviation company are mainly enlisted soldiers who are deployed in combat theaters.Made by General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc., the same firm that produces the MQ-1 Predator, which the Air Force retired in 2018, and its successor, the MQ-9 Reaper, the MQ-1C Gray Eagle is a derivative of the Predator and falls somewhere between the two in terms of capability. Armed with up to four Hellfire missiles or a mix of other munitions, the Gray Eagle also carries a suite of surveillance gear that includes signals intelligence equipment and high-resolution cameras that can read a license plate from 15,000 feet. The basic Gray Eagle can fly for up to 25 hours, while an extended range version has a maximum endurance of 42 hours.

Echo Company has also seen extensive service in Africa, where JSOC has used its Gray Eagles “to go after high-value targets” in counterterrorism missions in East, North and West Africa, according to a former official at U.S. Africa Command. A small number of Gray Eagles also deployed to Garoua, Cameroon, to help other U.S. special operations forces and their partners in the region in their campaigns against Boko Haram and ISIS-West Africa, according to the former Africa Command official.

My Take: Counter Insurgency and Counter Terrorist Operations need to be intelligence-led and technologically driven to ensure mission success. When these capabilities are deficient as observed in several African Armed Forces, increasing collaboration and cooperation with countries with such technological capabilities remain a viable option and must be instituted on a Government to Government basis.
CrimeBank Robber Pleads Guilty So He Doesn’t Go Home To Wife by EMPE(op): 3:48am On Jan 25, 2017
He’s going to get his wish.

Geriatric thief Lawrence John Ripple, who told police that he wanted to live in prison instead of with his wife, has pleaded guilty to robbing a Kansas City bank — and now faces 20 years in a federal lockup, according to a new report.

Ripple, 70, pleaded guilty Monday in US District Court in Kansas City to knocking over Bank of Labor on Minnesota Avenue in September. The bank is located a block away from Kansas City, Kansas, police headquarters.

Ripple has cut a deal with federal prosecutors and his defense attorneys, leaving it in their hands to argue an appropriate sentence, the Kansas City Star reported.

Gen Buhari's reply to Aljazeera is a demonstration why he can never be Nigeria's  president. A man that supports violence and has refused to denounce violence. It is quite unfotunate.

For anyone to say that the electio was rigged because Buhari did not win is myopic and a wrong way of looking at the elections. Opinion polls before the election had predicted the pattern of voting. The only uncertainity was the SW. The failure of the CPC-ACN Alliance and the filth that was exposed in its failure was the final strAw for SW to vote Goodluck not PDP. The governship elctions will see ACN maitaining its hold in the SW.
