Donald Trump wants the spread of coronavirus stopped and the US back to normal by Easter - arguing thousands die every year from the flu and the economy doesn't get shut down.

The president has set a goal for the crisis to be over by Easter Sunday on April 12 in just 19 days, claiming Americans are "raring to go".

"We lose thousands and thousands of people a year to the flu. We don't turn the country off," he told Fox News.

"I would love to have it opened by Easter.

"I will tell you that right now. It's such an important day for other reasons, but I will make it an important day for this.

Mr Trump's policies include recommending no social gatherings over 10 people, which has seen some houses of worship offering online services.

Americans are also advised not to eat at restaurants but the president is adamant his 'business as usual' goal in less than three weeks is a realistic one.

"I think it's possible. Why isn't it? We've never closed the country before," he said.

The president referred to Easter Sunday as a "very special day" and said he hoped it would see "packed churches" across the country.

The president - who has been at loggerheads with some medical experts who want firm anti-containment measures to remain in place - went on to argue that the flu may kill thousands of people a year but so could a collapsed economy.
He said a "massive recession or depression" would lead to "suicides by the thousands".

"You're going to have all sorts of things happen. You're going to have instability.

"You can't just come in and say, 'Let's close up the United States of America.'"
