The race to find a new leader of the World Trade Organization has been thrown into renewed uncertainty after the cancellation of a key appointment meeting following the US presidential election. The Geneva-based WTO, which acts as an international arbiter for trading disputes, said it had put off a meeting scheduled for Monday that had been called to appoint Nigeria’s Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as its next director general. Donald Trump’s administration opposed her selection in one of its final acts before the US election, despite the former Nigerian finance minister securing the overwhelming backing of the WTO’s 164 members. The special meeting of the trade body’s general council had been convened to take a formal decision on the appointment. Officials had been set to put forward Dr Okonjo-Iweala as the candidate most likely to attract a majority, after most countries expressed a preference for her over South Korea’s Yoo Myung-hee. Okonjo-Iweala had moved a step closer to becoming the first woman and the first African to be director of the global trade watchdog after securing backing from the EU, China, Japan and Australia. Liam Fox, the leading Brexiter and former international trade secretary, had run as the UK government’s preferred candidate but failed to win enough support from other countries to reach the last two in the process. Trade experts said Joe Biden defeating Trump in last week’s election may have led to countries calling for a delay in the WTO leadership race, with the aim of securing the Biden White House’s backing for Okonjo-Iweala after he takes charge in January. The delay in selecting a new WTO director general comes at a fragile moment for the world economy amid the second wave of Covid-19, and after years of criticism of the WTO and calls for reform from Trump. The WTO said the meeting would be postponed until further notice, during which time the organisation would continue undertaking consultations with delegations from countries around the world to pick a new leader. It said in a statement: “For reasons including the health situation and current events, delegations will not be in a position to take a formal decision on 9 November.” Source :https://amp.theguardian.com/world/2020/nov/08/appointment-wto-chief-doubt-meeting-cancelled-ngozi-okonjo-iweala

What kind of stupid tax? Did i make my income in Nigeria? I pay alots of tax where i am, Nigeria Government still want to collect another tax from me. I think this is the worse Government i have ever seen. If the Federal Government needs money to run her country i think he should put the right things in place. I can make Nigeria a better country just in space of 6months through different channels. To me Nigeria is the easiest country to rule with the population of over 200 million. So sad we dont have the right leader to make Nigeria great. |

Will you keep quiet! If you have nothing reasonable to say must you write comment. You believe the igbos dont have tangible resources. why are you all enemy of progress? I will appreciate if you the yorubas can stop hiding under the umbrella of the hausas because you are nothing but snitch. I see yorubas as a tribe that cannot be independable as a country. They prefer to sell their rights just because of stipend. Mind you, if you want to know how the yorubas behaves, travel abroad and see your tribe denying their fellow nigerian. How was Buhari named the speaker for Boko Haram? If you're insinuating that the commander in chief of the armed forces of Nigeria is a Boko Haram member, then you really have to be careful so as not to land yourself in prison for libelous claims. You can keep talking about people who are doing evil and how that should help them become president. When you are ready, go to Abuja and collect staff of office from Buhari. In case you don't know your own history, the problems of Igbo started when Ironsi Aguiyi planned the first coup and killed the Sardauna of Sokoto, something which hitherto had never taken place. This was followed by the Biafra war, where your beloved Ojukwu claimed Niger Delta as Biafra after discovery of crude oil. It was all about the crude oil. Ojukwu was a thief. There is more oil in Ondo state than the entire south east. Google is your friend. Igbos don't have any tangible resource apart from their well developed business acumen, which we love and respect them for. You see Igbos need Nigeria more cos your people trade everywhere. That's the money they send back to the east.[/quote] |

EDO State deputy governor Comrade Philip Shaibu has said that Governor Godwin Obaseki deserves a second term in office to enable him to curtail the extravagance and overindulgence in government. Shaibu, in a statement in Benin through his Special Assistant on Media Mr. Benjamin Atu said, “The volumes of the government programmes and projects that are creating wealth and job opportunities, reviving collapsed business enterprises stimulating agriculture and local food production are reasons why Governor Godwin Obaseki is in the race in order to consolidate on these first-term achievements in office. He said that Governor Obaseki will continue to deepen the mechanism of governance and service delivery in the State just as he said Youth employment and Women empowerment has been given attention just as rapid results have been achieved in the economic section He maintained that the Infrastructure development being executed by the present administration in less than four years in office, far more exceeded what was recorded in the eight years of the previous administration. He explained further that the returned of an equitable dispensation of the State resources which has been the bedrock of the Obaseki administration negates what was the norm during the previous administration when Edo Central was fully cut off and neglected as a non-existing part of the State due to political vendetta against the elder statesman late Chief Tony Anenih. |
A man has been jailed for urinating at the Westminster memorial dedicated to PC Keith Palmer. Andrew Banks, 28, of Stansted, Essex, was photographed during Saturday's right-wing protests in London. He was sentenced to 14 days in custody, after pleading guilty to outraging public decency at Westminster Magistrates' Court. He was said to have drunk 16 pints during Friday night into Saturday morning, and had not been to sleep. Banks contacted police after being confronted by his father, the court heard. Jailing Banks, Chief Magistrate Emma Arbuthnot said: "I accept you were drunk and did not know where you were urinating. "Your explanation is you had 16 pints to drink, you hadn't been to bed, and a group of football supporters were coming up to protect the monuments. "The irony is rather than protecting the monuments, you almost urinated on one. That was more by luck than judgment."

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress in Modakeke, Osun State, Manashe Ehile, on Monday, alleged that some suspected political thugs sent by a party leader loyal to ex-governor Rauf Aregbesola, on Sunday, disrupted the inauguration of ‘4 + 4 = Oyetola’ initiative. Ehile spoke on the telephone on Monday that the event was nearly marred by the armed men, who stormed St. Stephen’s ‘B’ Primary School, Famia Road. He however said the 12 suspects, after they had been overpowered, mentioned Rasheed Opatola, the ex-special adviser on environment to Aregbesola as their sponsor. “One particular man called ‘Ori’ was said to be destroying the billboard of ‘4 +4 = Oyetola at the venue. But when we got to the venue, we calmed people down. “Later, some thugs were sent to disrupt the event. We were able to identify and apprehended some of them and they said Rasheed Opatola sent them. “About 12 of them were apprehended and we later released them after they apologised and confessed that they were sent,” Ehile said. Opatola, however, dismissed the allegations, saying, “I did not send anyone to disrupt any awareness campaign of our Governor, Mr Gboyega Oyetola. On that Sunday, I was in an APC meeting alongside 18 other leaders of the party where we were discussing the progress of the party in our local council development area.” |
