– NUPENG, PEGASSAN have endorsed the price mechanism adopted by FG to arrive at the new N145 per litre pump price for petrol – The two unions asked FG to immediately commencement of negotiation of minimum wage for workers across all cadres. Following the removal of subsidy from petrol, the two major unions in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector endorsed the price modulation mechanism adopted by the Federal Government to arrive at the new N145 per litre pump price for petrol. According to a report by Punch newspaper, the two bodies called for stakeholder engagement by the government to further discuss issues pertaining how to reinvest the gains from the price modulation mechanism. “The NEC-in-session had an extensive discussion on the recent price modulation. The NEC-in-session is of the view that price deregulation has its benefits in the immediate and near future. However, the NEC-in-session strongly demands the Federal Government’s engagement with the stakeholders to work out a clear direction on how to reinvest the gains into the economy to cushion the effect of the price,” the communique reads in part. The unions asked the government to ensure optimal performance of the existing refineries and also put in place machinery for the construction of new refineries in the country to ensure adequate production for domestic consumption and possibly export. The workers added that there was also the need for the “engagement of critical stakeholders for the Federal Government to provide a road map with timelines of the infrastructures it intend to embark upon with the proceeds from this price modulation to cushion the harsh effects of the new direction. “Immediate reconstitution of the board of PPPRA and PEF for the management of the new price regime and the reconstitution and the re-strengthening of relevant agencies such as Standard Organization of Nigeria, DPR and the Nigeria Customs and Excise Department to prevent the abuse of the new framework of PMS supply and distributions.” They further stressed that there should be an immediate commencement of negotiation of minimum wage for workers across all cadres.

The Oyo State Government has said it will
set up a panel to investigate 16,532
workers in the state for various offences
which include drawing multiple salaries.
The Secretary to the State Government,
Olalekan Alli, said on Wednesday that the
affected workers included employees and
pensioners of the State Universal Basic
Education Board, Teaching Service
Commission, National Youth Service Corps
members, local governments and tertiary
institutions. Alli explained that workers, who should
have retired but who were still working, and
employees with bank accounts linked to
invalid Bank Verification Number or without
BVN, would also face the panel.
He said the payment of salaries of the
concerned employees would be suspended
immediately pending further investigation.
He said, “It is to be noted that the 16,532
employees, identified as having issues in
their data, are not automatically thrown out
of work nor are they confirmed guilty of any
financial illegalities yet.
“That is why the panel is being set up to
further evaluate the case of each person on
a one-on-one basis.”
The SSG said the workers were exposed by
the recent staff verification in the state,
which was carried out by a consultant.
He noted that the purpose of the exercise
was to eliminate fraud and errors in the
payment of salaries, wages and pensions
as well as to determine ‘ghost’ workers in
the state.
Alli added, “It is to ascertain the actual
number of employees in the regular
employment of the state by various
categories; determine who is a bonafide
beneficiary of the salaries/wages/pensions
by the government; eliminate fraud in the
payroll system by ensuring that only
identified, deserving and regular employees
receive the salaries being paid by the
government.
“The exercise was also conducted to fish
out ghost workers, eliminate all forms of
duplication and irregularities that may lead
to the inflation of the payroll via the
nominal roll and ascertain the level of
compliance in respect of mode and format
of payment of salaries.”
The SSG said after the forensic
computerised data audit, the consultants
from NIBSS found many instances of
inconsistencies, variations and entry details
that did not tally.
According to him, a former Commissioner
for Health in the state, Dr. Muyiwa
Gbadedesin; a representative of the
consultant, Mrs. Tolu Shadipe,
representative of labour unions and the
Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance,
would be members of the panel. |
Prof. Park Idisi of the Department of Agriculture, University of Abuja, on Saturday said the 2016 budget would increase exports that would strengthen the country’s currency. Idisi told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that although the naira had lost its value against the Euro and other foreign currencies, it would soon gain its strength through exports. He said that the 2016 budget signed by President Muhammadu Buhari would alleviate hardship as there would be cash flow in the economy and businesses would start booming. He recalled that the president had said that Nigeria would no longer borrow part of the money needed for the budget as he was able to raise funds from other sources. |
