A while ago, a friend of mine had a tough experience. His wife had given birth, but by the eighth day—the day of the naming ceremony—they were still in the hospital because they couldn’t settle the bills. The hospital, not trusting that he would return to pay, refused to discharge them and held them back. Thankfully, we managed to raise the money, and they were released.

As difficult as that was, I still think it’s a far better situation than when a hospital refuses to admit a patient in critical condition simply because they don’t trust the family to come back and pay. Turning them away in such a moment, forcing them to seek help elsewhere, can be the difference between life and death—and in this case, it was a death sentence.
