Mr. Rotimi Akinde, the father of a 20-year-old boy, Bidemi Akinde, has accused one ASP Afolabi, aka Jagaban, attached to the Sango-Ota Police Area Command, Ogun State, of leading some hoodlums, who are notorious for unlawful possession of parcels of land, to kill his son. Bidemi, an apprentice barber, was reportedly shot dead in the Oke-Ore, Atan-Ota area of the state by one Segun said to be one of the hoodlums loyal to one Alhaji Owoeye. Bidemi’s father said his son’s freedom was around the corner when he was killed by the bandits allegedly accompanied by Afolabi-led team, who invaded the community around 10pm on Wednesday, August 19. PUNCH Metro learnt that Owoeye, his thugs and the policemen fled the area after Bidemi, who was coming from a canteen, was felled by the bullets from the gun of one of the hoodlums. Our correspondent gathered that the thugs had stormed the community on the fateful day, shooting indiscriminately while they pasted notice to quit on houses in the neighbourhood. It was learnt that Owoeye was arrested later that day by some soldiers, who handed him over to the police. Speaking with PUNCH Metro, the deceased’s father, Rotimi, said he wanted ASP Afolabi and others allegedly involved in the killing of his son to be brought to book. He said, “It was Owoeye who hired the policemen, led by Supol Afolabi, from the Area Command to follow him and other land grabbers to our community. He is their chairman in the Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area. “Afolabi had called a landlady because of the notice pasted on her house. It was shortly after then that people rushed to tell me that Bidemi had been shot dead. How can a police officer be leading thugs to victimise residents? Owoeye is not an indigene of our community. “I learnt that he had been arraigned in court. I urge the state judiciary not to compromise. The officer and other land grabbers at large should also be brought to book. Bidemi’s mother, Sarah, also urged police authorities and the government to ensure that justice was done in the case. She said, “Bidemi’s death has left a huge gap in my heart. He was obedient, gentle and respectful. He finished his secondary school education two years ago and had been disturbing me that he wanted to further his studies. I pleaded with him to complete his vocation first because we didn’t have the means yet. “His boss certified him some months ago and we were already planning for his freedom when these heartless people killed him.” Bidemi’s boss, Olugbenga Omoleye, described him as hardworking and intelligent. He said, “I am still battling with the fact that he is gone. I had left the shop under his care that morning and went to Owode with a friend. Soon after I got there, I learnt Owoeye and his boys had started their trouble again and I called him on the telephone to shut the shop and go home. A few minutes later, I was called that he was dead.” A landlord in the area, who did not want his name in print, said the suspect and his cohorts had used policemen to oppress them for years. He said, “I was taking my son to an Islamic class that day when I saw them and policemen trooping into the community. We had to hide somewhere. It was Segun who shot that boy. Another resident, who identified himself only as Olayinka, said Owoeye was terrorising the owner of a building under construction when he was arrested. “At a site in Atan, where he was arrested, he was asking the owner to pay N500,000 to permit the foundation of the building. The man was begging him to collect N250,000, but he refused. It was in the process that soldiers stormed there and arrested him,” he said. The Ogun State police spokesperson, DSP Muyiwa Adejobi, denied that the police assisted the hoodlums to perpetrate the attack. He said the police had escorted some bailiffs to the community to execute a court order. He said, “A man got a court order on some landed property. The police went with the bailiff to the community to serve; the court order. The policemen and the bailiffs had left the place before the hoodlums came. It is not true that policemen led the hoodlums there. The ASP was there officially to do what the law says he should do.” Source : PUNCHmetro

Two persons, who specializes in
vandalizing installations of the Enugu
Electricity Distribution Company
(EEDC) have been electrocuted. DAILY POST gathered that the two men, Francis Ezeugwu and his accomplice, whose identity could not be established as at press time were short-circuited on top of EEDC pole at Okpunnoegbu Ekulu Nnewi and Agulu town. Meanwhile, a young man of about 25 years of age is currently hospitalized in Anambra State for burns he sustained while attempting to vandalize the EEDC’s 2.5 MVA transformer, which serves customers within Nnewi town. EEDC’s Public Affairs Manager, Mr Eugene Aniowo, who made the disclosure to reporters in Enugu on Sunday, said the incidents have been reported to the Police, even as he lamented incessant vandalism of EEDc’s installations in various parts of South east. Recalling that a High Court in Abakaliki recently convicted a young man for vandalizing property of the Company, he said that about thirty transformers had been vandalized in the last six months at Nnewi. Narrating the present incidents, Aniowo said that Ezeugwu used iron ladder to carry out his nefarious act, adding that he was electrocuted during the process, while the mangled body of the of the Agulu episode victim, “was found inside EEDC substation while attempting to vandalize the transformer components. His tools were also found around his dead body”. Aniowo said: “The oil in the transformers was drained and their cable installations were stolen, putting thousands of customers out of service. “EEDC condemns this spate of vandalism and will continue to work with the Nigerian Police and other security agents, Presidents-General of Town Unions and the general public in the war against vandalism. “EEDC regrets the spate of vandalism on her network and other installations. This had led to loss of lives and untold hardship on our customers, who suffer outages as a result. EEDC has been campaigning through radio, television and public meetings for perpetrators of such acts to desist from their ways. We have also arrested many vandals and handed them over to the authorities. “It is unfortunate that despite the campaigns and arrests, some people still carry out such activities at the risk of their lives and interrupt the enjoyment of electricity by our customers. “EEDC requests that the general public be vigilant and not allow its network and installations to be vandalized within their communities. “EEDC customers should see electricity installations around them as theirs and ought to protect them as such. They should pay their bills as at when due and report any faults to our nearest office. Under no circumstances should any customer engage a non-EEDC employee to work on our network or installations. Such acts put the lives of the untrained persons at risk.” Aniowo said the company had lost several millions of naira in revenue by the activities of vandals in the last couple of months, stressing that the issue was on the rise in the five southeast states. >>FRSC
warns against night
traveling
<<<
No fewer than 14 persons have been
confirmed dead and 30 others badly
injured in two separate auto crashes
at the Ogunmakin stretch of the
Lagos – Ibadan Expressway. The first accident occurred on Wednesday night, when two trucks collided with each other. The crash involved a trailer, with registration number XE 444 KTU and another trailer conveying cows and 27 persons sitting atop the vehicle. The FRSC deputy route commander and acting zonal Public Education Officer, Ndidi Frederick-Imo, said 20 persons were injured and rescued alive, while 10 others were confirmed dead at the Ifeoluwa hospital in Ogunmakin. Another mishap, which occurred at the same axis of the Lagos – Ibadan Expressway yesterday morning, left four persons dead and 10 others injured. The accident occurred when a diesel tanker from Lagos, which was loaded with PMS and marked MKA 338 ZB, and a luxury bus with registration number AAA 656 XN, coming from Abuja collided. 50 people were rescued from the scene by FRSC operatives and policemen. The four dead victims were evacuated to Fakoya mortuary in Sagamu. FRSC official said due to the dangers associated with night travel, the commission’s Assistant Corps Marshal (Zone 2) Lagos, Nseobong Akpabio, has warned Nigerians to desist from embarking on such journeys by road. She said: “We all know that night travelling is extremely dangerous and should not be encouraged by families and companies because night driving is fraught with more dangers than daytime driving due to poor visibility, drivers’ fatigue, and other associated human errors. “The Assistant Corps Marshal Nseobong Akpabio enjoins the motoring public to be more careful on the road as the latest crash was due to loss of control and over speeding. Drivers should ensure that their vehicles are in good working condition including brake lights, reverse lights, turn signals and any functioning lights,” she told newsmen.

A housemaid, Blessing Edeh, has stabbed her boyfriend, Edet Ebong, to death in the Lekki area of Lagos State. The 24-year-old Uyo, Akwa Ibom State indigene, said Ebong died because he was jealous and suspicious of her, adding that she felt no remorse since it was “a case of two fighting”. PUNCH Metro learnt that Edeh and Ebong had been dating for one year and six months. The 33-year-old truck driver was said to have moved into his girlfriend’s apartment on Falana Street, Ogombo, Lekki, after they both agreed to marry. However, on the fateful day, Ebong was said to have returned from work late in the night and told his lover to prepare food for him. The suspect allegedly abused him, leading to a scuffle between them. In the ensuing brawl, the suspect allegedly stabbed the victim in the stomach. He died in a hospital in the area. The matter was reported at the Ogombo Police Division and was subsequently transferred to the State Department of Criminal Investigation, Yaba. Edeh told PUNCH Metro that she killed Ebong, saying the victim was drunk on the night of the incident. She said, “On the fateful day, August 18, he came back from work and was drunk. He said I was messing around and sleeping with other men. He demanded the ring that he gave me, and I told him I could not find it. I later told him it was on the table and he should go and pick it. “He became angry and broke the mirror on the wall and we started fighting. He used part of it to cut me in the eye, and I stabbed him in the stomach with one of the splinters.” Our correspondent learnt that the suspect’s younger brother, who was in the room, raised the alarm. The victim was said to have been rushed to a private hospital in the area, where he died. Edeh said she was arrested by policemen from the Ogombo division, adding that she learnt about Ebong’s death while in detention. She said, “It was not my intention to kill him. But it was a case of two fighting; he was drunk that night and was misbehaving. He was also the first person to cut me in the eyebrow with glass before I retaliated.” A resident in the house, who did not identify herself, however, said nobody knew what happened between her and the deceased until her younger brother raised the alarm around 12 midnight that the victim had been stabbed. A police source told PUNCH Metro that the suspect stabbed the victim with a kitchen knife, and not a glass splinter as she claimed. He said the victim’s entrails were exposed after the attack, adding that he died a day after the incident. “The fight started after he returned from work and asked her to prepare noodles. She began to abuse him that he was irresponsible. She said she was the one housing and feeding him, while he did nothing. That made the man angry. He asked for the engagement ring he gave her, and she asked him to pick it from the table. And that started the fight. “She picked a kitchen knife and stabbed him in the stomach, exposing his intestines. He died the next day,” he said. Our correspondent learnt that the victim’s corpse had been deposited in a mortuary in the area. The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Patricia Amadin, had yet to respond to enquiry on the case as of press time. Source : punchMeTRO

Head of the Sokoto Remand Home,
Alhaji Dahiru Lawal, on Thursday
said 13 inmates had escaped from
the centre in the last two years due
to the poor state of its facilities. Lawal disclosed this in Sokoto when he received a donation from an NGO, Housewives Initiative Development Association, He appealed to the Sokoto State Government to undertake massive rehabilitation of the centre which was in very deplorable condition. Lawal said that the Home, which served as reformatory for convicted juveniles, required urgent government support, to enable it discharge its responsibility more effectively. The official said that the inmates were able to escape due to the poor state of facilities at the centre. “The inmates dug a hole under one of the windows of their cell and fled. It had been repaired and seven of them were re-arrested. “Four of the escapees surrendered themselves to the court while two are still at large.” Lawal disclosed that the Home currently has sixteen inmates who were either jailed or placed on remand for offences ranging from armed robbery, theft, rape, sodomy, among others. The official, therefore, urged the state government to rehabilitate the facility “which is now in a serious state of dilapidation.” He also solicited for the provision of a borehole, clinic, vehicle and other facilities to the centre. Lawal commended the association for the donation, saying that it would support efforts at rehabilitating the inmates. Earlier, Chairperson of the association, Mrs Hassana Dangaskiya said that the intervention by the group was to alleviate the suffering of the inmates. She appealed to wealthy individuals and organizations to complement the efforts of the state government in funding the operations of the home. One of the inmates, Muhammad Sani commended the association for the gesture, saying,” we are happy that some people have remembered those of us living in this pitiable condition.” The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the association donated assorted foodstuffs, detergents and toiletries to the remand home. Relatives of 29-year-old graduate of Anatomy, Dr. Adedayo Adewumi, have been thrown into confusion following his disappearance. It was gathered that Adedayo, a first time visitor to Lagos, went missing on August 27 after he step out of the house for fresh air. The family told our correspondent that Adedayo came to Lagos State from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on August 22 and was staying with some family members on Alawode Street, Kilo, in the Surulere area of the state. Adedayo was said to have stepped out of the house on the fateful day for fresh air after a power outage. He was said to have left the house without his cell phone. His father, a retired engineer with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Mr. Ademola Adewumi, told our correspondent that he was worried because the missing man was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 2006 while studying Medicine at the University of Ilorin, Kwara State. Schizophrenia is defined by the dictionary of Medicine as a mental disorder often characterised by abnormal social behaviour and failure to recognise what is real. According to the dictionary, common symptoms include false beliefs, unclear or confused thinking, auditory hallucinations, reduced social engagement and emotional expression, and lack of motivation. The disorder is thought to mainly affect the ability to think. People with schizophrenia are likely to have additional conditions, including major depression and anxiety disorders. The condition is said to have posed a lot of challenges to Adedayo when he was a student of Medicine. Unable to cope with Medicine, he had to change to Anatomy. His father, Ademola, said, “I suspect he is wandering around or languishing somewhere by now. We have gone to all the police stations in our area and beyond. But my major worry is that if there is a case of accident or wrongful arrest, the police will be able to tell, but they may overlook a case of a man wandering aimlessly. “I have his medical records with me. He has been treated six times for the condition, but always had a relapse. However, since he graduated in 2012, there had been an improvement. That was why we suggested a visit to Lagos hoping that the change of environment will help.” Adedayo was said to be the eldest of three boys. His younger brother, Adeshina Adewumi, a banker with a commercial bank in Lagos, said Adedayo had bouts of depression in the past, it made him to disconnect from people and to stop using his phones, adding that there had been an improvement in his condition following his graduation and the end of the National Youth Service Corps. He said, “While in school, he was often depressed. But when he finished school, his condition improved. Since then, he has always been in a guided environment. “Shortly before he came to Lagos, he fell into depression again and my father suggested that he should come to Lagos with the hope that the change of environment would lighten him up. “He did not have any disagreement with anybody, he was happy to come to Lagos. In fact, a day before he went missing, he was planning to go with me to Lekki.” The Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Patricia Amadin, promised to get back to our correspondent on the matter. She, however, had yet to do so as of press time. Source : punchMETRO |

A BRITISH husband and wife
have become the world's oldest
married couple as they celebrated
their joint birthdays – just ahead of
their 89th wedding anniversary. Record-breaking wrinklies Karam and Kartari Chand celebrated their 109th and 102nd birthdays. With a combined age of 211 YEARS, the elderly lovebirds tied the knot in the same year that Margaret Thatcher was born and the Prime Minister was still Stanley Baldwin Karam Chand turned an impressive 109 on the same day his wife of almost 90 years Kartari celebrated turning a staggering 102. The record-breakers marked the happy occasion with four generations of family at their home in Bradford, West Yorkshire. After almost 89 years together, Karam and Kartari have watched their family balloon – and now have eight children, 27 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. The inspiring golden oldies claim to be the world's oldest married couple, tying the knot back in December 1925 after falling in love in India as teenagers. Karam – who was born in a small rural village in the Punjab region, in northwestern India in 1905 – married his wife at the age of 20. His family were farmers and in- keeping with the customs of the time, he married Kartari very young. She was born in 1912 in the same district and the pair wed in a typical Sikh ceremony after her 13th birthday Proud son Paul Chand said he was pleased to help his mum and dad celebrate their birthdays this weekend – on the cusp of nearly a century of married life. He said: "It has been a special day for my family and for us all to be able to come together like this. "Relatives have flown in from India to be with us. "People are so impressed by my parents. "They always ask me: 'What do you eat? What are you feeding them and how do they stay so healthy?' "I tell them: 'If I knew that I would be eating the same thing myself'. "Everybody asks how they keep healthy and my answer is that for the last 20 years we have given them a stress-free life." Karam – who now struggles to walk any great distance without assistance – moved to England with his wife in 1965. When asked about his tips for living a long and healthy life, the 109-year- old hubby said: "Eat and drink what you want but in moderation. "I have never held back from enjoying my life."
