THE NATION OF OUR DREAM SOURCE: THE NATION NEWSPAPER, NOVEMBER 6, 2014 By AJAYI ENEYE DAVID, 300 Level Pharmacy, University of Benin, Nigeria is 54! Much has been said and little has been done. Much was expected but little has been achieved. So, that makes it easy for them to conclude in their little minds and broadcast with their wide mouths that “Nigeria is a failure”. And some crooned “Nigeria is a fool at 54. You might have heard or even said same. But there are many things they don’t know that they don’t know; you may call that tautology or repetition if you wish. But their ignorance is secondary. They said: “Nigeria is nothing to write home about,” yet, it’s still a home for you and I. Listen to what I’m about say. “This is Nigeria walking down the aisle to the altar.” “Here is Nigeria meandering her way to the peak.” We might have been very slow about this, but, thank the heavens that we aren’t soaring in a retrogressive manner. Let me start like this; they said Nigeria is not united. But they’ve soon forgotten that Nigeria is made up of over 200 ethnic groups with diversities in cultural, social and religious beliefs which, in some cases, are contradicting. Please, tell me, is there any country in Africa harbouring as much ethnic groups? I doubt if there is any with half of that. Yet, we’ve been together for good 54 years. But they still make international communities brand us as “disunited” through hyperbolic media stunts. Then what is Unity? For goodness sake can’t you see how Sudan divided just because of mere religious difference? If you don’t know let me tell you, that act has sentenced many Sudanese to death by hunger and their refugee base have sky-rocketed. Think about this: when the whole world watched us with folded arms to massacre ourselves in a bloody civil war just seven years after independence, we were yet tender and naïve. But we got peace restored even though a faction had to extend the olive branch. No wonder Chimamanda Adiche said in “Half of a Yellow Sun” that “the world was silent when we died”. Or didn’t we witness how some countries decimated almost half of their citizens in bloody wars that wouldn’t have ended save the intervention of international communities? Nigeria had to use her own forces and money to rescue Sierra-Leone and Liberia from an unending civil war and restore democracy to those nations. They said our democracy is a farce but we’ve sustained it for fifteen years and no election had led to the sort of skirmishes we’ve seen in Cote d’Ivoire some years back. Even Zimbabwe had to shamefully resort to power sharing formula which was unconstitutional to their system of government just to hold on to democracy. What gains has the so called North African revolution yielded? Nothing, except for its barrage of ousted governments. In fact some almost fell back into the cruel hands of khakistocracy. Here we are portraying good democracy in the midst of our African neighbors suffering to establish it. And we say Nigeria is a fool at 54? We might not have attained perfection as a country but the truth remains that we are doing better. I’d wondered why Nigerians always opt for the easy ride to condemn the country and point at our common loopholes but no one seems to have deemed it fit to praise our positives. They said we have a moribund educational sector and our tertiary institutions strike more frequently than thunderstorm. As a matter of fact, scores of our youths are trooping to neighboring countries to get the same degree that seems like rocket science to attain here. But what we don’t know is that most of those universities are nothing but a plot of land with two blocks of flat and ten lecturers. You might want to ask how I knew all these. But the facts are there for anyone who searches for them. The fact that our youths get admitted into these schools on a platter of gold unlike Nigeria raises serious concern about the credibility of their offerings. All we need is more institutions to contain this growing education-seeking populace. If some countries experience half the degree of corruption and looting of public funds Nigeria has to endure, they would have long ran into bankruptcy and a crumbled economy. So whether we like it or not, Nigeria has survived all these assaults for 54 years. Again, it’s ridiculous how some Nigerians spend time making plans to travel overseas and enjoy life in developed countries simply because they think life is too difficult in Nigeria but they have no Idea how people in the so called green pastures work from dawn to twilight, sunrise to sunset to earn their dollars and pounds. But somehow, they end up overseas, take up menial jobs they refused to do here in Nigeria. It is often said that people make places and places don’t make people. Where the hell are we running to? Let’s stand up, work hard and build the Nigeria we want to see. Foreigners are trooping into Nigeria to invest in our economy and here we are running away from our own Canaan. So the white man comes, exploits and under develops us to develop themselves. We can’t begin to compare Nigeria with her superiors. It’s non-sequito to compare Nigeria with United States or United Kingdom. They may be years ahead of us on the grounds of development but we are catching up faster than anyone would have us think. Didn’t they say crude oil exploration will drop below average if Niger Delta militancy continues? But as I pen this piece, amnesty had made militancy a story of the past. And crude oil exploration is still booming. They’ve even predicted that crude oil exploration may come to a halt in a matter of years but they don’t know that crude oil contribute only 14 per cent to our annual GDP- which is on a steady rise. Now they’ve predicted that Nigeria will disintegrate by 2015 if Boko Haram insurgency persists but who knows if these rebels might just sheathe their swords or probably get pinned by Nigerian armed forces before you know it. This is Nigeria and we have a glowing future. Recently, Nigeria curtailed the spread of the deadly Ebola virus while thousands are busy wasting away in Sierra-Leone and Liberia just because they lack the potential to contain it. We might not have attained the envious heights of our European counterparts, but we are setting a pace in Africa. We are the giant of Africa. We are Nigerians and we are good for something: drive, hope, and positive change. David, 300-Level Pharmacy, UNIBEN http://thenationonlineng.net/new/the-nation-of-our-dream/ |
Hiswordxray that is true sha, It's only wen one has a perfect understanding and experience of God's love that he can keep his commandments |
yeah, sanmittee, I am of the view that the love of God should be preached first, its should be after their refusal that the wrath of God be made known to them, from Jn3:16-18, you will discover that is is even unbelieve that sparks condemnation |
LOVE OR FEAR: THE APPROACH OF A PREACHER He repeated countlessly, stressing each word as though they were monosyllabic. The words were not strange nor new to me or any one. But they were sounding vague and obviously ambiguous. I'd thought he will demonstrate or stage a scene to have his message passed on seeing that his words became incapable of self-expression. He had just burst into our room a while ago pleading for a moment to share the word of God. Yes the word of God. We couldn't have refused his offer; lest he would say we are sinners for sure. Surely, we knew that the word of God is renewing and refreshing always. It's never too much to be enough rather think of it been prodigal or extravagantly preached. He started with an opening prayer with a thunderous town crying voice. I was shocked. Did he have to shout this loud? But we did chorused amen! When his prayers tailed. He said: "I want to talk about the fear of God". That was the phrase he repeated countlessly. Perhaps he assumed we all were Christians or there could be no atheist in the room. Of course we need to fear God. Because the scriptures said so. As he preached, many questions ripped through my mind. A part of me felt a word from him will melt the ice those questions had accumulated in my mind. But the words kept eluding the ice while the ice grew in mass about to rupture like an oozing burden. Why should I fear God if I don't acknowledge his superiority? Why should I fear a God that is invisible? Why should I fear God when he won't strike me immediately after perpetrating an evil? In fact is he a masquerade or scare crow? These were all begging for an answer within me; this I know. The wrath of God is apocalyptic and eternal; already we know. But they aren’t instant because He wants all to come to repentance. He isn't interested in the death of a sinner. So he said; "If you want to give your life to Christ say this prayer after me"; that was after his message must had raged fear in the unbelieving heart. Well, it could be logical to say that the fear of God can make one keep his commandments but I reminisced my primary school days how my parents warned me not to eat anybody's food even when offered freely to me. But my fear for my parents’ wrath never overpowered the hunger in me to eat when offered or beg when the hunger is killing. That is to say; temptation can override the fear of God in us at times. So the fear of God can never be enough reason for us to keep His commandments; that was the deficiency of the law. The dispensation of the law buttressed on the fear of God. But Jesus came and buttressed on the law of the spirit. The dispensation of grace was centered on love and not fear. So Jesus said "if you love me keep my commandments". You can only prove your love for God by keeping His commandments. That is why the scriptures says; the love of Christ constrains us. This is made to say the message of salvation should be presented with God’s love for humanity and not the fear of humanity towards God's wrath. Abi o, that is the kind of country we find ourselves |
OH! WHY ME?- A TALE OF THREE TREES Once upon a time, three trees grew in the wild. When they were yet tender they had a discussion, the discussion went thus: The first tree said to the other two “when I grow big and ready to be used as wood, I would love to be cut and used to construct a jewelry box” this was the ambition of the first tree- to keep treasures made of diamond, gold and other meaningful possession. The second tree said to the other two also “when I grow big and ready to be used as wood I would love to be cut down too, but unlike you I would love to be constructed into a great ship to transport Kings and other well meaning personalities”. On the contrary, the third tree said “unlike you both I would not want to be cut when I grow big, but I want to grow tall and reach to the heavens, so that when men look up to me they can see God” this was the chitchat amongst the trees. So they grew big in a matter years and were all ready and mature enough to be used as wood. One day three lumber men came into the forest in search of trees to be cut and used as wood. They came to the spot were these three elegant trees grew. The first and the second tree hope earnestly that they be felled while the third hoped that probably two trees may just be enough for them. But on the contrary, the three trees were been felled by each of the three men. The third tree was in great despair and sorrow because it had being deprived of its dream but the first two remained hopeful. Later on, the first tree was constructed into a feeding trough and was used in a manger for feeding horses. This was the height of disappointment. “I wanted to house treasures but now I'm an ordinary feeding trough for common animals”. The second tree was constructed into a boat used for fishing. Certainly not its dream. "I wanted to be a great ship to convey kings over the great waters but now I've become a mere boat used by common fisher men”. The third three was left as logs idle in the warehouse. They were all deprived of their dreams and seemed like the end of the road for them. How will serendipity bring their dreams to reality? One day a man came, cleaned the feeding trough in the manger, spread a cloth on it and laid a new born child on it. The child grew and became of age. One day as he walked along the shore, great multitude followed him, for he was a great man. He met a man fishing with the boat the second tree was constructed into, he pleaded with him to let him use his boat so he could stand on it and address the multitude on the shore, the fisherman kindly did. Later on He was made to carry one of the logs from the third tree idle in the warehouse to a place called Calvary where he was hung on it. Wow, the first three carried the messiah, most precious of all treasures it wished to house, the second tree had carried the King of kings and the King of kings was hung on the third tree and all who want to see God looks up to him that is hanged on the three. Lesson: God is able to make something from nothing, no matter how far away you are from your destiny look up to God today and he will put you back on track. JUST FOR N60-My Hall 3 experience I lifted up my eyes to reply the greeting sounding from the room's entrance. Though I wasn't the only one in the room but it was ethical for everyone in the room to respond to such. I glimpsed him through my net but the words succeeding his greeting prompted my gaze. "I can mop your room for N60, but for N50 if you supply me the detergent to do so"-sounds like an announcement he has made through out the hostel in search of a positive reply. What? My brain doubted my ears, my emotions were overwhelmed with mixed feelings; It was a good idea because the room was dirty and he needed money and on the contrary I couldn't imagine someone doing such a shameful job for penny ante. After he ended his manifesto, a protracted wind of silence swept all over the room which was aroused in transient discussion prior to his appearance. In the middle of the silence we spoke with our spirits and our eyes were our mouth. "Yes you can begin" a room mate replied with a re-affirming nod from others to give him the impression that he was going to get paid. "Then I will start right away" he said, before the blink of an eye he disappeared and re-appeared with two buckets of water and a mop stick. As he mopped, I tried to search through his face to see his anguish but there was none, instead he sang with a melodious but ill-sounding voice. Something in me wanted to ask, "Why are you doing this?" But my lips remained tightly shut unable to utter a word. A fore thinking that it will sound as mockery. In my soliloquy I imagined how hard it must have been for him to put all his ego aside, in search for daily bread at the cost of his pride. Of course a students like we are. A campus where everyone wants to keep his shoulders high to earn social respect. The misfortune that hit him had made shame and sense of social stigma an alien to his feelings. On the brighter side, it was better than resulting to criminal acts for survival. Truth be said, all these are implicated in the high level of poverty and economic hardship in the country. And yet they will say "Nigeria has one of the fastest growing economy in the world" and yet local statistics have nothing to show for these, instead the cost of living gets sky-rocketed and standard of living an inflicting pain..
