THIS NONSENSE MUST STOP I write to express my displeasure about the running of this hospital. I wish I could start from something really disgusting, but everything appears bad enough. There are obviously notable achievements of this present administration, however the truth must be said. Imagine a teaching hospital referring basic surgical cases, like appendectomy, to peripheral centers because of power(electricity) failure. This is no cock and bull story. In fact, I have been involved in wheeling patients to and from the theatre because there was no diesel to power the generating set. Oh, just imagine completing a caesarean session with rechargeable lamps or even light from phones. This is slowly becoming a norm. Welcome to UITH where surgeons are given a grace of 2hrs of electricity to perform whatever surgical operations they choose to, be it craniotomy, EX LAP with intestinal anastomoses, total abdominal hysterectomy and the administrators went through the entire duration of medical school, house job, youth service as well as residency training. Days ago in the ward, a child was being resuscitated but had many secretions which couldn’t be suctioned as there was no electricity supply and you can quickly take a guess as to how the story ended. I could honestly go on till eternity about power outage and won’t be able to express my mind enough. I remember a child that died post-herniotomy in the ICU because the oxygen finished. Lol, but won’t be funny if you imagine it to be a relative of yours Lol. Did I hear you say radiology, please don’t make me laugh. If not for medical laboratories in town , I wonder what would have become of health care in Ilorin. To start with, there are only two functioning whatever century (very ancient) ultrasound machines and either the XRAY or CT machine is not functional at every point in time. MRI? Let’s not go there. An intern was threatened that his life would be made miserable, simply because he didn’t stand up to greet a top administrative officer as he approached the ward. Of course the poor intern had to prostrate to beg, accompanied by eye witnesses, before he was forgiven for committing no crime . This is what is obtainable over here; members of staff being intimidated at their duty post. This, I think, is nonsense!! Writing about the discrepancy in salary compared to workers of other hospitals would take me about a year or 2. Members of staff promoted without salary backing for as long as 5years, yet there is constant supply of funds from the federal government, not to talk of internally generated revenue. Virtually every session of the hospital is understaffed with as low as 2 nurses in each shift at the emergency with over 20 patients. A complain about the call food that is served every night ended up with the CMD threatening to stop its supply, saying provision of call meal is only an act of benevolence and kindness from him. I remember the story of a colleague who went from the 2nd floor down to the reception at the ground floor to pick up about 10 plates of call meal, only to be accosted by a patient relative who innocently asked how much he sold each plate of food. He didn’t know how to begin to explain that he wasn’t a food hawker but a qualified medical practitioner . I don’t see what stops the distribution to each department/ward by the welfare team. This I think is demeaning, disrespectful and a perfect definition of nonsense. Imagine the CMD(chief medical director) calling intern accommodation and call meal incentives. An intern spends an average of 12hrs at work on non-call days depending on the posting, only to come home (hospital quarts) to meet blackout for as long as 2weeks with associated lack of water for the same duration or more. The expected immediate response is to pay a visit to the administration to lay complaints about our predicament and plead that a constant power supply at least at night would serve as an incentive for increased productivity, but the CMD in his wisdom says;’’ I don’t need to motivate you, there are people out there looking for the job, so if you are not motivated you can go’’. He even said categorically that it’s either the annual rent paid is doubled (from 60 to 120k), ARD (association of resident doctors) takes over the management of the quarters or no accommodation is provided at all because it is too expensive to manage the quarters. This statements typify that of tyranny, autocracy and disregard for fellow human. A similar response was gotten from another administrative staff when suggestions of providing more call rooms as well as equipping the terrible one’s available. He insisted that we knew the conditions available(1 mattress for up to 3 doctors on call ) before applying for work in this facility and that it is not too late to leave. What a mess. Call rooms like Rat holes, call meals with sour stew and almost spoilt meat, salaries like beggars, this nonsense must stop. I think this nonsense must stop and there’s no better time to put an end to it than now. Copied from Narcolepsy blog. CC pls put on front page |
