Two things a conscious spirit from God and a physical body. This conscious spirit or energy body is what survives a man's death. This soul either has enough power to ascend or is weighted down, has low energy, then descends into darkness. This darkness is a place of torment for souls. Biblical writers and prophets give physical descriptions of the suffering involved like gnashing of teeth but a soul had no teeth. A soul has no flesh to burn in the fires of hell but a soul exists tormented in a place filled with nothing but darkness.
