Abia PDP chairman berates Orji Uzor Kalu for crediting Road projects in Abịa to Federal Government

The Abia State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Allwell Asiforo Okere has described as shameful and deceitful the alleged comment by former Governor Orji Uzor Kalu that the Federal Government is responsible for the ongoing massive rehabilitation of roads in Aba. Mr. Okere stated this on Monday in a chat with newsmen in Umuahia. In a video that went viral on social media, Abia State former Governor, Orji Uzor Kalu claimed that the federal government was the one executing the road projects and not Abia State government. Mr. Okere- a former state lawmaker wondered why the federal government should embark on the repair of roads in Aba when it's battling to rehabilitate roads under Its jurisdiction.

He said "Orji Uzor Kalu is in the red chamber and he wants his brother to be in the green chamber of the National Assembly. He is playing with the sensibility of Abians as if Abians have no sense of history. Our people are not in a hurry to forget the past".

He continued "I'm happy when he said his brother will be "omekannaya". What it means is that his younger brother will continue with the woeful performance of Nnanna Kalu who wasted 8 years in the House of Representatives. Did Nnanna Kalu pass any motion? Did he attract any project to Aba? It's left for Aba people to decide if that is what they want".

Mr. Okere who described Chimaobi Ebisike as the most qualified, said he was born and raised in Aba and therefore was aware of the yearnings and aspirations of the people. He said PDP's standard-bearer cannot be compared to the other candidates who reside in other parts of the country and overseas but return to Aba only during the period of election.

"Chimaobi is a complete Aba man. The mother is from Nkwere while the wife is from Mbaise both in Imo state. He will not discriminate against anyone. What we need is somebody that is a true Aba man by all standards. He (Chimaobi) knows the challenges facing the people unlike the other candidates".

The PDP Chairman explained that there was no crack in the party following the emergence of Chimaobi Ebisike. He said all the aspirants were present the day the party's candidate was chosen adding that the former aspirants are the ones spearheading the campaign.

On the ongoing rehabilitation of roads in Aba, he said the Okezie Ikpeazu administration had commenced work before the announcement of Saturday's bye-election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). He therefore called on Aba people to vote for the PDP candidate, Chimaobi Ebisike on Saturday.

Don’t Remove Paul Ikonne, Ariaria Traders Appeal to President Buhari

Traders at Ariaria International Market in Aba have called on President Muhammadu Buhari to ignore the moves being made by one Chief Innocent Madumere calling for the removal of Paul Ikonne as the Executive Secretary of National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA).

In a statement signed by the Chairman of Ariaria Market Traders Association, Elder Emeka Igara, Monday, the traders stated that they are worried that the said Madumere who is unknown to the association is using its name to engage in partisan politics with sponsorship from well known political detractors in the state who did nothing for the traders while they occupied various high political offices.

According to him, “nobody authorized anyone to issue any statement on behalf of Ariaria traders and we do not want anyone to use our name to further his own private political interests. We have nothing against Prince Ikonne who has done a lot for us along with his father Eze I.O. Ikonne.

"In any case, we are happy with the President for his choice of a round peg in a round hole in a dedicated personality like Prince Ikonne against appointing those who have nothing to offer to Nigeria and the President.

"We will therefore resist any attempt by these unscrupulous politicians who have long lost political value in the State because of their infamous political voyage in the past, to harass or intimidate Prince Ikonne just to feather their own nests.

Continuing, the traders' leader said, “There is no better Ambassador for the president in Abia State than Prince Ikonne and we make bold to state that many of those who support the President here are doing so because of the sterling qualities of few people like Prince Ikonne and his father, Eze Ikonne.

Politics / The Judiciary And The State Of Anomie Under Uzodinma by Enyibaba: 8:07am On Mar 14, 2021
The Judiciary and the State of Anomie under Uzodinma

Anyanwu O. Anyanwu

It is a year now that the Nigerian Supreme Court catapulted Senator Hope Uzodinma to become Governor of Imo State. Where he now bestrides as a 'maradona' in the status that the Nigerian judiciary bequeathed to him. Governor Uzodinma's path to Douglas House vis-a-vis his ambition, where it not for the Nigerian factor, would have permanently been confined to the garbage heap of history.

Senator Uzodinma's penchant for resorting to illiberal means and parachute politics aptly fit the tempo of the Nigerian state, as it is presently constituted. From the executive, legislature and the judiciary, the real politics of ideas, character, development, intellectualism, honesty, fear of God, sincerity of purpose are all buried; while the state now seem to celebrate with great aplomb, dishonesty, mediocrity, injustice and even obfuscation of state issues and laws. This is the template that squarely railroaded Uzodinma to Douglas House.

To begin with, before the 2019 Governorship Election in Imo State, Governor Uzodinma's resumè was populated with several law cases and litigation, such that, it was clear to Imo people and Nigerians that he could not be entrusted with the apparatus of state or levers of power to oversee the running of government in Imo. The most cerebral of those litigations was the charge for allegedly siphoning a whopping $12.5 million meant for the dredging of Calabar Sea Port. Records have it that in 2018, he was arrested and grilled over the alleged disappearance of the funds without any job done.

The litany of cases against Governor Uzodinma before 2019 was so much that, many are of the view that, the easiest path of escape was to adorn the immunity casock - which can only be guaranteed by being a Governor. Thus, his plots to ascend the position of Imo Governor, even without the  electoral mandate of Imo people became somehow a cavalier expedition. One which can be equated with the American Rapper, Curtis James Jackson a.k.a 50 Cent's mantra of "Get Rich or Die Trying."

Specifically, the plots and all the conspirators that sank Imo State's democracy to trouble waters will ever remain the eight wonders of the world. Besides annulling outcome of the primaries All Progressives  Congress (APC) as well as condemning it for violating the electoral process by awarding the governorship ticket to two separate candidates, the Supreme Court, sidestepped its own judgement and went ahead to declare Uzodinma as a Governor of Imo State. It is an absurdity that has now placed the Supreme Court and the Nigerian judiciary in a bad light before Nigerians and the International Community. This is a dent that no one nor the Supreme Court can erase from history.

To make matters worse, going by the judgement of the Supreme Court on December 20th , 2019, APC had no candidate in that election because the court held that Uche Nwosu, was disqualified, having been duly nominated by the Action Alliance (AA) and the All Progressives Congress (APC)  simultaneously.

Even if APC had a candudate in the person of Senator Uzodinma,  APC came a distant fourth in the the governorship election conducted in Imo in 2019. His declaration as Governor of Imo State by the Supreme Court is most bizarre and therefore a clear damnation of democracy and the will of the people. It's a chilling usurpation of powers by the Court where only the voters have such powers. In a democracy, The court and the judiciary do not and should never have the powers to decide who govern the people, except in cases where interpretation or justice is sought. In this cases, the determination must be in accordance to the laws and laid down rules of the land.

For the records, the duty of the court and judiciary is to dispense justice, but not to elevate injustice and empower desperate politicians. But in the case of Imo as it were, it clearly tells of the democratic disaster that the judiciary

Politics / What Does BARR OKEY IGWE Really Want? by Enyibaba: 1:03pm On Mar 10, 2021
What does BARR OKEY IGWE really want?

He was brought in from America to become our local government chairman when he had never been in politics before then. After all, we accepted and respected his elder brother for his stake in Abia politics. He emerged as a chairman in 2016; a young returnee lawyer who would have been more productive in the US Army he belonged to. Many thought he would become the messenger of hope due to his training abroad but were disappointed in his two years as chairman of Umunneochi.

Again in 2019, he was imposed on us again as a House of Assembly member, yet we couldn't resist the strong oil magnet behind the scene, hence, we yielded to a second imposition with same person on different positions in Umunneochi. In all of these impositions, we didn't leave him alone, instead we worked as a party to protect the party. Midway into his stay in the House of Assembly, Barr. Philip Okey Igwe is always fueling crises in the polity. He warred with previous T.C Chairmen including Barr Chima Mgbeke, Engr Matthew Ibeh and was the brain behind the unfortunate removal of Matthew as T.C Chairman. He installed Barr Eze Chikamnayo instead but later ran out of favour with him. He is drunk in the pride of being the highest PDP elected office holder in Umunneochi. But does that give him the power to control the Local Government Chairman? For Peter's sake, he left that office totally depleted, what else is he in for? He parcelated over 500 plots of land belonging to Umunneochi to himself, family, friends and associates, yet he is still playing the ostrich. How come he is not afraid of possible probe of his activities while LGA chairman by private individuals?

Recently, election was held into the offices of Chairmen and Councillors of the 17 local governments of Abia state. Barr Okey Igwe absconded to USA to avoid participating in the election and contributing either his money or tact. He didn't know that Umunneochi election was conducted on Saturday 19th December against 18th that was the initial date. He left the chairmanship candidate all to himself, yet came back to seek undue right. Many wondered how he was able to fly into USA amidst strict COVID-19 restrictions of entry to US. But no doubt his membership of the USA Army gave him leverage. He abandoned his company Umunneochi to seek holiday in the States while election was on course. He didn't show presence throughout the election and after. He didn't commit a single dime to the candidate of PDP or the the party herself in the course of the election. Perhaps, after losing out on his interest during the primary election, he gave up interest. Barr. Okey Igwe was yet in the US when all councillors emerged, but at the point they were preparing for election of Principal Officers of the Council, Okey woke up from his slumber. He started scheming for the soul of the Council. He projected his Councillor from Amuda for the Leader of the Council and other CFC councillors as principal officers. He also sought to impose one of his stooges from zone one as another Principal officer right from his parlour in the US. When the election of Principal Officers was called up on the 30th December, 2020, Okey who was still in far away US, mobilized his CFC Councillors and others led by a notorious outlaw from Mbala Isuochi to distrupt the sitting of the day. When they were rebuffed by combined Police and Civil Defence, the council went on and elected their principal officers. Rt Hon. Oguejiorfor Okoli therefore emerged as the leader. The Deputy Leader was elected from Umuaku, a part of zone 2 that has no position as of current in sharing of positions in Umunneochi. It would be recalled that Umuaku had two Councillors, one of them died in an accident the morning he was running away from the pressure to join Okey's camp to challenge the emergence of the principal officers. Unfortunately, they were still calling the deceased phone as he was breathing his last. Sadly, enough, barley two months after this unfortunate incident, they have not called nor condoled with the family of the deceased. In sympathy to Umuaku and in respect to their departed colleague, the councillors ceded the Deputy Leadership to the other councillor from Umuaku Hon. Biereonwu Chigbo. As we speak, Barr Okey Igwe is fighting tooth and nail to strip Umuaku of this only position. He is insisting to retain the deupty leader to his ward against popular opinion. According to natural law, for the fact he was not around during the general and Principal Officers' elections, and also given that he didn't contribute even pure water to the campaign, he doesn't have any right of claim to any slot for principal officers. He ran away from the responsibility of the election, yet all of us rallied round him during his own elections.

These notwithstanding, out of the five Supervisors that will form the Chairman's cabinet, one slot was given to Chief Ndidi Okereke for zone 1, one to Barr Okey Igwe for zone 2, one to Chief Ifeanyi Okechukwu for zone 3, one to Dan Okoli for zone 4, the last one was reserved for the chairman of the LGA Chief Ifeanyi Madu. When Barr Okey started offensive against the chairman, acusing him of influencing the election of Principal Officers of the Council, the peace-loving chairman relinquished his own slot to him, allowing him two slots of supervisors just to let the sleeping dog lie. This is to us the highest show of respect and love. This is regardless of the fact that when Okey Igwe was chairman, he didn't consult any body for the selection of Principal Officers of his council and appointment of supervisors. After all these extension of olive branch, the House of Assembly member is yet to be pacified. What else does he want? He boasted that he will rubbish the administration of Ifeanyi Madu because his preferred candidate didn't make it beyond primary election. He is seeking to achieve these by infliterating the council will his stooges. He has been treated fairly, what else does he really want?

He has reported the Executive Executive chairman to the party at state and LGA level. He also reported to Speaker of Abia State House of Assembly two times, and at all of which the chairman had proven his fairness to him. When he didn't succeed in armtwisting the sympathy of Mr speaker, he proceeded to DSS. Why all these desperation? What does Okey Igwe want from our bridge-building chairman?

When power becomes arrogant, history must remind it of its limitations.

“Shun The Temptation Of Conniving With Government Appointees To Siphon Public Fund,” Agbazuere Advises Civil Servants

....says no Government Appointee can siphon public fund without the collaboration of a Civil Servant

The Chief of Staff to Abia State Governor, Associate Professor A.C. B Agbazuere has advised Staff of Parastatals and other government agencies to shun the temptation of conniving with government appointees to siphon money meant for the overall welfare of Staff.

Dr. Agbazuere gave this advice at Government House Umuahia, on Tuesday, while addressing Staff of Abia Line Network Company (ALNC) who staged a peaceful protest to complain about some grievances and challenges confronting them.

He disclosed that no government appointee can siphon money without the active collaboration of some workers.

Reminding them that Parastatals have laws that established and empowered them to manage their Internally Generated Revenue, Dr. Agbazuere expressed worry over where management and workers of Parastatals cannot come together to harmonize and proffer lasting solutions to the issue confronting them.

He further noted that other privately-owned transport companies survive and pay their workers, wondered why the reverse is the case with Abia Line and called on public office holders to see their appointments as a call to serve and to better the lots of their staff and not as an avenue to amass wealth for themselves while promising that the state government will look into the issues raised.

Earlier in his address, the Chairman of Abia Line Labour Union, Comrade Israel Ogbonna said the essence of their peaceful protest is to appeal to the state government to urgently address some issues, and challenges confronting the Staff of the agency to enable them to continue performing optimally.

The Commissioner for Transport, Mr. Godswill Nwonoruo among other top government officials were present during the event.

Politics / Highlights Of Remarks By Governor Okezie Ikpeazu At The Banquet Hall Of Governme by Enyibaba: 10:47pm On May 01, 2020
Highlights of remarks by Governor Okezie Ikpeazu at the Banquet Hall of Government House

Highlights of remarks by Governor Okezie Ikpeazu at the Banquet Hall of Government House, Umuahia, on Friday, 1st May, 2020

Abia state Governor, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, met with a cross section of Abia leaders including members of the clergy, commercial transport operators, market unions, medics and members of inter ministerial committee on COVID-19, to deliberate on a gradual easing of the ongoing lockdown in the state.

The following are some of the resolutions reached at the meeting as announced by the Governor, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu:

1. It has become obvious that we cannot lock down forever. There shall therefore be a phased and gradual easing of the lockdown in the state which was occasioned by the outbreak of COVID-19 in Nigeria.

2. Our meeting today looked at 7 major issues in that regard and most of them have been resolved

3. Our consensus is that we will gradually allow the operations of commercial tricyclists (Keke) but on the condition that every Keke operator and passenger must wear face mask with only 2 passengers allowed at a time.

4. We also agreed that the mini buses (Oke Bekee) will carry not more than 5 passengers at any given time and every one of them must wear a face mask. For the 14-seater buses and above, we agreed that only 2 passengers will be allowed per row and in all cases, all of them including the driver must wear their face masks.

5. We have also decided that for now we should keep our school children at home which means all our schools will remain closed but we must reinforce our radio classroom initiatives, which entail learning through radio, an initiative which we have started already. All radio stations in the state will be hooked unto that platform to ensure wider and deeper coverage. Parents are called upon also to exhibit high sense of responsibility in preparing their children to be ready before the radio program which starts at 8am every week day.

6. For our markets, we will meet the leadership of the various markets, and in meeting government, we expect them to raise a team of 17 persons per market that will serve as COVID-19 committee members for their respective markets. The selected 17 persons will meet the Deputy Chief of Staff, Office of the Governor, to try to teach them or sensitize them on some of the imperatives of COVID-19 which include that every shop going forward must have a bucket of running water, that is bucket with tap, and then soap and hand sanitizers. Social distancing must be observed in all our markets. The details and the schedule for the eventual reopening of our markets will be determined only after these 17-man team of each market has met with government through the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff and agreed on same.

7. We have also agreed that for now, the leadership of our respective Churches will take responsibility for the conduct and behavior of the laity even as we have agreed that they can worship from this weekend. We are pleased with their conduct before now and we expect that they will continue to maintain the practice of sitting 2 persons per pew. For Churches that don't have pews, alternate positioning of church members ensuring that we do not have overcrowded churches and places of worship. We have also agreed to run many streams of one hour service each to ensure that all Faithfuls are accommodated and then all churches must close activities on or before 2pm on worship days.

8. For burials, we have noticed that most of our morgues are overburdened as it were and we may have difficulties in our hands if we continue to keep the corpses without burial. In addition to this, preservation may become an issue and we may have avoidable challenges. Government has therefore decided to allow burials since we don't have any COVID-19 related mortality yet. But the burial events which should hold in the nearest fields must observe social distancing and not have more than 30 persons in attendance.

If the burial is to hold in a compound, then those who attend must not be more than 10 persons. And for a burial to be allowed, the Church involved will obtain a permit directly from the Office of the Secretary to State Government, or through the Traditional Ruler of the community as the case maybe for those who believe in traditional religion. However, such a traditional ruler will need to obtain a permit from the Office of Secretary to the State Government with leadership of the Local Government Area monitoring such a burial. They have been authorized to disrupt burials that are conducted in flagrant disregard to these directives.

9. We are also preparing our civil servants to resume but starting with only schedule officers and their immediate support staff. And when they resume they will only work for alternate days and close office latest at 3pm. At no time are we expecting to have more than 20 persons per Ministry during this period.

10. The measures above do not in any way affect the subsisting dusk to dawn (6pm to 6am) curfew in the state, inter state boundary closure, tricycle and other commercial transporters will only resume operation after endorsing a memorandum of understanding with the government on the new guidelines.

11. Finally, I am very happy and proud to announce to us that just this afternoon, the Ministry of Environment and Abia State Government have signed agreement with the World Bank for the commencement of the N27.2 billion project in Aba and we expect ground breaking to take place any moment from now. This project includes the most ambitious water management project ever done in our state with Ngwa Road and other areas expected to be fixed.

Thank you very much.

NB: The Chairman of the inter ministerial committee on COVID-19, Barr Chris Ezem, will issue further details regarding Implementation of the decisions including commencement dates and others.
