Politics / No Corper ’ll Be Lost To Election – NYSC by epikc: 5:27am On Jan 14, 2015

http://wakagist.com/2015/01/14/no-corper-ll-be-lost-to-election-nysc/

Exactly one month to the commencement of the forthcoming general elections, the National Youth Service Corps has assured Nigerians that no corps member will be lost to post-election violence, as was the case
in some parts of northern Nigeria after the 2011 polls.

The organisation said it had commenced sensitisation programme for community leaders in some areas, that were prone to violence, to educate them that corps members were neither politicians nor members of staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The Director-General of the NYSC, Brig. Gen. Johnson Olawunmi, made this known in an interview with journalists on Tuesday in Abuja, after declaring open the 9th edition of the War Against Poverty, a training programme of the Federal Government for corps members.

“I am sure, Insha Allah, that at the end of the 2015 elections, we will not lose a single corps member,” he stressed.

About 400 corps members are benefiting from the training which was jointly organised by the NYSC and the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Millennium Development Goals, headed by Dr. Precious Gbeneol.

The NYSC director said, “You all know it that corps members have become part of the electoral process in Nigeria and one thing that is certain is that since corps members have started taking part in elections in Nigeria, you will all accept and agree with me that our elections have continued to get credibility more than it used to be before we started participating.

“On what we are doing as far as their safety and security are concerned, we have put a lot of measures in place. Some will be done before the election, some on election day and some immediately after the election.

This principally involves training, sensitisation, collaborating with all the relevant agencies in terms of security for corps members on the day of the election.

“We have even gone beyond that. We are already discussing with community leaders, engaging them and letting them realise that these are their children who are just serving the country and are not INEC members of staff; they are just serving their country.”

“We are also letting them understand that that as they have corps members in their own communities, their own children are also in other communities doing that. So, I’m sure at the end of the 2015 elections, we will not lose a single corps member.”

Politics / Sad News: C&S Leader, G.O. Fakeye, Dies At 78 by epikc: 8:58am On Jan 12, 2015
The spiritual leader of the Cherubim and Seraphim Movement Church, Ayo Ni o, Prophet Gabriel Olubunmi Fakeye, is dead.

http://wakagist.com/2015/01/12/sad-news-cs-leader-g-o-fakeye-dies-at-78/

The C&S Movement announced his death during their Sunday service, but did not specify what led to his death.

Further checks, however, revealed that the popular televangelists, also known as the Psalmist, died on Sunday in a hospital in the United States of America after a brief illness. He was aged 78.

Born in 1937, Fakeye, an engineer, started preaching the gospel at a tender age. He was popularly called “Bro Aladura” in his youthful days and remained a preacher until his death.

Even though he was advanced in age, he continued to administer the movement (Ayo Ni O) he founded.

Late Fakeye was a visionary leader with profound knowledge, grasp, and appreciation of history. He was renowned for his conviction and faith in the unity and greatness of Cherubim and Seraphim Church.

He was also a believer in the unity of Christianity worldwide, as he was not a sectional leader.

Until his death, he had television and radio programmes in a number of broadcast stations including the G.O Fakeye television programmes.
Fakeye is survived by wife, a son, six daughters and grandchildren.

Sources from the Ayo Ni O Movement told our correspondent that burial arrangement would soon be made public.

Politics / Buhari’s Certificates With Us, Says Army by epikc: 12:05pm On Jan 04, 2015
The authorities of the Nigerian Army have said the service will readily release credentials and certificates in its custody to serving and retired officers in need of them.

The Director, Amy Public Relations, Brig.-Gen. Olajide Laleye, said in an exclusive interview with our correspondent in Abuja on Wednesday.

He said the procedure for the retrieval or collection of the certificates was known to all serving or retired officers of the military.

The Army spokesman was reacting to a declaration by the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj.Gen Muhammadu Buhari (retd), that his credentials were with the military.
Our correspondent asked Laleye if it was true that the military was keeping the General’s certificates.

Buhari had said in an affidavit he deposed to at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory on November 24, 2014 and received by Independent National Electoral Commission on December 18, 2014, that all his certificates were with the Secretary, Military Board.

“I am the above-named person and deponent to this affidavit therein.

“All my academic qualifications, documents as filled in my presidential form, President APC/001/2015, are currently with the Secretary, Military Board as of the time of presenting this affidavit. The affidavit is made in good faith and for record purpose,” Buhari stated.

But Laleye stated that the Army would not refuse any officer whose certificates were in its custody from getting them if the existing procedure was followed.

He said the Army could not have deprived anybody access to his credentials since the credentials did not belong to the service.

He said, “Every serving and retired Army officer has at least a copy of his certificates and credentials kept in the Nigerian Army while that same serving and retired officer has copies of those same certificates and credentials.

“And there is a laid-down procedure to request for certificates. It is known to any serving and retired officer.

“If you want anything checked in your file, you simply follow the due process and it would be given to you because the credentials belong to you.”

“The Nigerian Army does not refuse to give anybody his credentials if the due process is followed. Now, take note of this. Not only does the Nigerian Army keep these things, the individual officers, whether serving or retired, have copies.”

Politics / Boko Haram Abducts 40 Boys, Men In Borno Village – Witnesses by epikc: 1:13pm On Jan 03, 2015
Suspected Boko Haram gunmen have kidnapped 40 boys and young men in a remote village in Borno state on New Year’s Eve‎, residents who fled the isolated settlement said on Saturday.

Scores of Boko Haram militants stormed the Malari village and whisked away the males, aged between 10 and 23, into the nearby Sambisa forest, believed to be one of the Islamists’ major bases.

The news of the abductions came out only days later, when residents who fled the village arrived in the state capital Maiduguri late on Friday.

“They came in pick-up trucks armed with guns and gathered all the men in the village outside the home of the village chief where they preached to us before singling out 40 of our boys and taking them away,” Bulama Muhammad told AFP

Malari village lies 20 kilometres (12.5 miles) from the Sambisa forest and close to the town of Gwoza, which the militants captured last June declaring it part of their caliphate.

“My two sons and three nephews were among those taken away by the Boko Haram‎ gunmen and we believe they are going to use them as conscripts,” Muhammad said.

“When we heard of the kidnap of 40 boys in Malari by Boko Haram we decided to leave because we could be the next target,” said Alaramma Babagoni, who fled from the nearby village of Mulgwi.

There was no immediate comment on the incident from the military in Maiduguri.

Boko Haram is still holding in captivity more than 200 schoolgirls it abducted from their school in Chibok in Borno state last April.

The Islamists are believed to control large swathes of territory in Borno as well as several towns and villages in two other northeastern states, Adamawa and Yobe.

Boko Haram’s five-year uprising in Nigeria has claimed more than 13,000 lives and has seen dozens of people, including women and children, kidnapped by the Islamists.

Politics / Step Down For Buhari, Catholic Priest Tells Jonathan by epikc: 9:26am On Jan 03, 2015
Renowned Catholic Priest, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka, has urged President Goodluck Jonathan to abandon his re-election bid so that the All Progressives Congress candidate, Maj.Gen Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) can emerge the winner of the presidential election next month.

Mbaka, who heads the popular Catholic Adoration Centre in Enugu, said this in his New Year sermon titled “From Good luck to Bad luck,” while addressing thousands of parishioners on Thursday.

He urged all well-meaning Nigerians to vote for Buhari on February 14.
According to the cleric, Jonathan has disappointed Nigerians and cannot deliver the dividends of democracy to the people.

Mbaka subsequently knelt down in front of the altar, cried and asked God to give Nigeria a good leader and not Jonathan. He used the opportunity to beg Nigerians to vote wisely in the forthcoming elections.

He said, “I love President Goodluck Jonathan and I used to be his ardent fan, but I want good for my people and that’s why I want Nigerians to vote out Goodluck Jonathan and vote General Muhammad Buhari. I don’t care if Buhari is a Muslim and from the North; all I care about is that Buhari can save Nigeria.”

Ironically, Mbaka had recently endorsed Jonathan’s re-election.

It was learnt that the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, had taken Jonathan’s wife, Patience, to Mbaka, where the cleric said he would pray for Jonathan’s victory.

However, after prayers, Mbaka said the sign he received from God was that Jonathan was not fit to rule the nation anymore.

Mbaka further explained that one of the reasons Jonathan is no longer fit to rule Nigeria for the next four years was the high level of insecurity which the President had failed to address as well as corruption in the country.

He said it was unfortunate that the over 200 Chibok girls who were abducted by terrorists over 200 days ago had not been rescued despite series of promises made by Jonathan.

He further urged the Federal Government to account for the missing $20bn and stop insurgency in the country.

Mbaka maintained that Buhari could not Islamise Nigeria as being rumoured in some circles.

He said he had never met the APC candidate but urged Nigerians not to forget that Buhari fought corruption to a standstill during his administration between December 1983 and August 1985.
