Thanks. What you used was the test preview tool, for a complete test experience just before you click start test, there's a drop down menu at the top right of the page select timed practice test 1 or 2, good luck with your prep. |

drhammed: At this point, you can't start UBC application again, because the eligibility closed last Friday. November 10, and submission of the full package is by Nov17 latest. Also UBC doesn't sponsor Chemical Engr at the graduate level.
Yes, you're on the right track for McGill, but you will have to be fast (Noting that December is approaching and they might go on Break till Jan) Thanks for your prompt reply. |

drhammed: Steps for McGill is closely similar but not the same.
For McGill (Masters)
You contact the department you intend to apply to and seek nomination for MCF scholarship.
They will request for your credentials and forward it to department.
After review, department will contact you as whether you have been nominated for MCF or not.
If you have been nominated, MCF will confirm your eligibility and guide you to apply to McGill with fee waived.
Note: The nomination is done by a professor in the department you're applying to. Hence you don't have to contact them yourself.
I attached list of Program eligible for funding by MCF.
This was the message I got from McGill.
Cheers. So drhammed my first point of contact for McGill is my department (chemical engineering in this case), then i wait for their response, I guess my request mail to be nominated should be sent to the graduate coordinator, any other questions I have would be directed to you. And please do you have the courses that UBC sponsors or let me simplify is chem eng sponsored, and all this questions are referring to the masters program thanks for your prompt reply. |

Guitarlife: A quick question. Can we give a rough estimate of the amount that might be required for application and examz et all . It depends on how many schools you eventually decide to apply, and whether you take the TOEFL or not, I would advice you should it helps boost ones profile, so to your question GRE and TOEFL roughly 100K, application fees to a number of schools more or less your choice, around the same amount so there you've it, 150-250K depending on your capacity |

Scholastica16: I am not surprised by this at all; Your contributions here have been immense and I sensed you were preparing well. Very competitive schools you have there but you would match most of the profiles there so I am expectant for you.
Direct PhD or MSc apps? Direct PhD is the route I have decided for now. I had to streamline these schools based on research interest and available research laboratories. [quote author=TheGrandChemist post=62015148]Magnificent!
Please, do you mind dropping personal hints/strategies you apply on the verbal section of the GRE test, that of course take into account accuracy and a steady pace?
Thanks[/quote The text completion strategy was basically about looking for hints in the passage sometimes I skipped a whole chunk of words I knew didn't give any hint how? Something like "the tropical rainforest bird then a weird long name" so basically reading relevant parts to get the overall hint, I had to read some twice before I understood them though you would have time for that don't worry.
The sentence completion I followed the magoosh strategy looking for synonyms either strong or weak the words should be similar to an extent, and definitely they should complete the sentence and make meanings that are not contradictory to what the sentence is trying to portray.
Reading Comprehension on the other hand can be pretty cool, just make sure you are looking for the nuances in the passage and asking active questions like why did the author just tell us something and then say however this might not hold true, what purpose does the 2nd paragraph play in relation to the whole passage, do I understand the reason why the passage was written, you might want to leave the longer passages for last so you have enough time to do this. Your Vocab should be good enough though it makes the whole thing easy. Let me just say that after reading nytimes, the newyorker, the Atlantic and what have you those passages never seem boring, someone here recommended three articles a day, you could go with that too. I hope I was helpful though. |

So I had my GRE today at Galaxy Uniprep Abuja. Please note my post is a bit weird relative of the typical GRE experience. I decided to take the GRE sometime last year searched online and saw this forum, I was inspired by great scores here to all my bosses I hail.
Now to my experience I paid for my GRE around August with walspring's GRE discount Boss I'm definitely grateful for this. Preparation became intense after that though I had gone through a few materials sometime last year I had to revisit each one. I used the Manhattan 8 Series Great Book for Quant, and the Princeton review for Verbal Scholastica16 recommended this, thanks Boss it was helpful. I had gone through the Ets material both quant and verbal before I paid for the exam so I decided to delve into other resources. I watched the magoosh premium videos, those I could get my hands on twice. I definitely recommend that also, for the lesson videos I only went through relevant math topics I had issues with, combination, probability and counting and word problems.
Forward to a month before my exam I systemically went through the Manhattan flash cards the quant was extremely useful the verbal on the other hand had a plethora of words though they may not exactly be GRE esque. You might want to revise well, I think I revised each material I read well like twice or thrice for the ets materials.
I tool the powerprep II and the ets paper test in the week leading to my test, scores were within the range of 325-332, let me chime in here the quant in paper section seemed to easy I didn't have any problem with all question except 1, while I made a few mistakes in the power prep.
Exam day, I consider myself a staid person, so I was pretty relaxed maybe too relaxed, after check in procedures that took almost an hour. The essays were easy to tackle, I had VQVQV the quants didn't seem as hard as I expected maybe the Manhattan prep had raised my level, I guess I made a few mistakes though because I expected a better quant score. Reported my scores 162V 164Q 326, maybe I used easy a lot in my post don't mind me, and surprisingly after the exams I was not tired. Thanks to everyone that has contributed to this story and if you haven't gone through the forum from page 1 until date you're missing a lot of valuable information.
Sent my scores to four schools Purdue, Pennstate, Louisiana state university and University of Massachusetts Amherst.

witgig: MY GRE EXPERIENCE
I told myself that whether or not the result is a 'good' result. I must give an account of my experience. I must say, initially there was this feeling of 'my story is not inspiring , why share?'
I got to the venue quite early, like 45 minutes before the scheduled time. You get checked in as soon as you are ready and so you may start earlier than your scheduled time just like it happened to many of us. i Planned to got to the venue with banana, nuts, snacks and energy drink but only ended going with lucoz.. and that was enough. Although, i noticed my verbal section was getting ready to start probably because i didn't choose to go for 10 min break. it is important to take everything said on this platform seriously.
it was VQVQV. it really was not important spotting which of the sections is the experimental. the first quantitative was a roller coaster. Second quantitative however, was not joy all through. i got stuck with the DI, could not interpret the table. I lost my composure and had to guess 3 questions, that was a very bad thing to do and that i thought was my greatest undoing. The problem was pacing, and not creating enough time for the later part. I got complacent, not very mindful of my pace and i got punished. Verbal on the other hand - during Prep i discovered late that my RC improved and the nuances in TC was a latent problem. especially three blanks types. I used to get like half of the total number of TC questions. Therefore I was not expecting so much from verbal, just hoping to be lucky.
Prospective test takers should be methodical in their preparations. you must be able to track your progress, have a separate note from the one you work and scribble on. After that taking a full length practice test, a thorough review must be done make sure the problems are addressed.i did not do all that, not because i did not want to but because of work schedule. i get home tired everyday.
LASTLY, IT IS BETTER TO KNOW THE CODE OF THE INSTITUTIONS YOU MAY WANT TO SEND YOUR SCORES TO, I ENCOUNTERED A PROBLEM WHEN I SAW UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE AND not UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE, KNOXVILLE, BEARING IN MIND THERE IS UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE CHATANOOGA and other ones. AT LEAST you may not have to pay for that should you apply to that school later.
In the end, it was V:154 Q157 i saw after reporting the scores. BELOW MY EXPECTATION REALLY BUT ALL PRAISE STILL BELONG TO THE ALMIGHTY. I WILL TRY APPLICATIONS WITH THIS AND I AM QUITE HOPEFUL.

I SINCERELY HOPE THE GRE WILL BE DEEMED GOOD ENOUGH TO MERIT FULL FUNDING.

MasterforceII: My head hurts. No, I am not thinking about the present situation of the country, the recent NNPC scandal, the fact that we have not had light for days, I have just written my GRE exam. After months of on and off and off and on and off and off and off and off and on preparations, I can now call myself GREat. Lol. Having finally written the GRE, I feel I'm in a position to advise potential test takers. It goes without saying that in order to obtain high scores, one needs to practise. Take as many practice tests as you can and keep working on improving your scores. Infact, the practice tests are coterminous with the actual exams. My experience today proved that. In addition to preparing for the exam, you should also be preparing yourself mentally. You should be googling stuff like "how to keep your brain active for four hours", "How to detect the experimental section in the GRE exam", "How to read 600 word Reading comprehension passages in 2 -3 minutes". I did not have as adequate a preparation as I had wished. Work was so demanding and I couldn't find the time. Still, I studied whenever I could; on commutes to work reading articles from Aldaily, using the magoosh vocab app, memorising words from a list I had earlier created on quizlet (Studying GRE PRACTICE on Quizlet: https://quizlet.com/202373358/gre-practice-flash-cards/ ) - this was especially helpful as associating words with pictures ensured I remembered them. For the quant, I watched the magoosh videos and skimmed through the Manhattan sets. Serious preparations however began 2 weeks ago. I digested the whole ETS guide in one weekend and took the practice tests (158Q, 154V). No other material can substitute the ETS official guide in my opinion. That same weekend I took the powerprep and had (158,152) and I was like hay God! Is this my destiny? I hurriedly went through the Manhattan 5lb for quant and princeton review for verbal. In hindsight, I regret the haphazard manner with which i read the Manhattan 5lb. It is another great resource to ensure a good quant score. Took the second powerprep and the free crunchprep test yesterday and was averaging Q162, V158. Na so I close shop. What else could mans do? I was just hoping that ginger go enter my body today which would cause my scores to miraculously shoot up. Lol. Got to the center and was shown my desk. It was when I sat down that I realised I had not brought any snack. No water. Nothing. And Nairaland people advised me. How could you forget son? It was gonna be a long four hours. I got the VQVQV format. The first Verbal Section no be here o. I was tempted to walkout and go and pick masters form at Unilag. The 2 quant sections on the other hand were not bad at all. I was able to answer most if not all of the questions correctly , at least from my own perspective. Lol. The remaining verbal sections were fair. I did not encounter any strange words. The bulk of my time however was spent trying to decipher those arcane and convoluted RC passages. My advise, tackle the TCs and the SEs first, then the paragraph arguments before dealing with the RCs. That way, you are left with enough time to deal with the RCs. Reported my scores and was not surprised. I was just hoping for more. Sent to my preselected four schools and left the building to go find food and water.
Profile: CGPA: 3.64/4.00 (WES unofficial score) GRE Score: 321 Quant: 163 Verbal: 158 AW: Check back in 2 weeks. Applying for MS Electrical Engineering. #fall2018
This thread really helped a lot and it's only fair that i repay by giving an account of my GRE experience so that prospective test takers may glean from it one or two stuff like I did from reading others' experiences on here. I don't think I would be rewriting the exam. I don't think I can subject myself to that amount of mental drudgery again. Schools will have to accept me with that score whether they like it or not. Lol Congrats those are really nice scores |

Etap: My advice for propective test takers is to try and eat something (not too much food oo) just little on the morning of exam, it will allow enough glucose to flow in for the brain to look sharp, for me we had an hour and thirty minutes delay during the test, we continued from where we stopped, when the system came up again , every one was looking tired, ....prepare with Barron, magoosh, kaplan , and mahanttan ..thats all i use, i have a score of 304, waiting for the essay part, my school needs about 307 for funding, so im kind of furious about the remaining score. Thanks Well thanks and don't mind my eager demand for advice, and that was helpful. An hour thirty minutes delay that's almost six hours if I envisage correctly. And what school is that if I may ask , I think you could talk about the delay and how it limited your overall performance. In relation to sorting for funding, I hope you get fully funded. Just my honest opinion, for one to ace the GRE, you need to be proactive. Why have I said this, for those requesting for materials; there are a lot of free materials on the Internet. Let me steal one popular maxim " Google is your friend". Read up the magoosh intro, or the GRE page on gradcafe, or just add the .pdf indicator for any material you search for.
Let me chime in here that quality varies, so research on the reliability of the materials with regards to the revised GRE, and please endeavor to take at least one full test using power prep II nothing beats firsthand experience.
Wishing Fall2018 applicants best of luck in their applications. I hope to drop my success story soon. |

I graduated with 4.24/5 and seek to apply into any of these institutions for Msc (Agricultural Economics); uni nebraska lincoln, tennesse state uni, uni kentucky lexington and western kentucky uni. Do i stand any chance of gaining admission(fully funded)? If yes, what's the way forward and how do i go about it? while my knowledge is definitely limited, each person's application and possible funding route isn't exactly the same. The GPA and GRE correlation might be a red flag, having said that, mail the graduate coordinators of the aforementioned schools and inquire what a GRE score of your range, entails when it comes to funding. You might want to look at some B, B- schools hopefully you get something tangible. By the way you didn't give a brief gist on how you prepared, all in all my Bosses would delineate better. cc Scholastica16 Dremanuel gokuu |
