I think the perspectives that have ensued in the discussion about posting school names on transcripts might have been one-sided(i.e how other people benefit from an OP declaring their school on a transcript). How about the benefit(s) an OP gets from posting their schools like alumni reaching out to them to give directives, or just other students presently in the program reaching out to create rapport that would ease the OP settling into the program.

I would give the simple illustration, a closed hand cannot give or receive. So I figured I would highlight the other perspective of how hiding your schools can also be detrimental to the OP in one way or the other. At the end to each their own.

Ps: If you're curious folks are being reached out to because they posted their schools and literally the correspondence is sometimes to their benefits nothing more, think of folks that offer airport pickups and recommendations on how to navigate programs.

Hello!
Good morning, I trust you are doing good.

Please, what differentiates unofficial transcript from official transcript?
Can I prepare the unofficial transcript by myself? or do i need to go to the registrar of my school to get it?

You have it defined appropriately, if you have a result database and you put together all of your results, then that's an unofficial collation of your result(Unofficial Transcript).

The official transcript is signed by the registrar, and a statement that indicates any alterations falsifies the transcript. It should also have the stamp of the exam and records.

The official transcript is reliable as you can misremember your result or the database might switch credit unit allocation. So schools would want a reliable official documentation of your result (The official transcript)

2. Google "Gradcafe results" and then search in the Tab specifics to your course. Click on profiles to estimate what school is a fair selection. Gpa's are on the 4 point scale. Go onto "wes igpa free converter" to convert the GPA on a 4 point scale.
3. Check Twitter, advertised positions for graduate schools are on there.
4. Check USnews for school lists and then go to the school website(s) to see research interest and requirements.(A lot of questions about requirements, they are school specific so detail that individually for each school).

Prof please, to what university was she admitted?. I would love to explore it too.. Thank you

This isn't exactly any concern of mine. But, I go through a lot of Education threads, this being one of the best, and I see this repeatedly and just can't help but call it out. DO YOUR RESEARCH. If you plan to apply for a doctorate program, looking for a suitable institution is the easiest endeavor you would embark on. From then on, the slope gets steeper, assuming you get admitted into the program. Just to give you an example. I was the first African in my graduate program for God knows how long. Don't take this any way, just take responsibility for yourself. If I had your documents, I'm not bragging, In a week I would provide at least 3 fully funded programs you can apply to.

Start with the simple Google search. Streamline according to research, funding opportunities, send mails to graduate coordinators, they probably know better than anyone about specific program requirements, meet those requirements (GRE/GMAT and/or TOEFL), then apply.

Please and please and please again, prospective students, put due diligence to researching options they are a deluge of them. Gracias

It's good, that the thread survived the onslaught by the scammers, looking to bilk folks of funds budgeted for exams.

Plan your approach, the GRE, the TOEFL if required, WES if your schools require it.

Overall, not to call anyone out, and I understand how strenuous the process might seem, most questions I see on here and the USA visa thread have been answered over and again, even searching the Nairaland Education or Travel section could give relevant answers. Be delicate, in the process, take responsibility and be intentional, also having other people interested helps. That way you inform each other. Godspeed in your grad school pursuit folks.

Please house I need info on timing and deadlines. I hope to apply for fall 2019. I have not taken GRE and TOELF yet. Initially planned taking dem dis month but I have not prepared at all, Can I take the text early next year and still meet up with fall 2019? What are my chances of funding if I apply for spring 2020 instead? Please I need answers.

Thanks and wish everyone here the very best in their pursuit.

The simple answer would be Yes to the first question and some weird percentage I can't enumerate to the other.

I would use this answer to make a salient point, new members aren't trying enough take spotlighte for example when she read through the thread, she claimed all her questions were answered, because the answers are scattered all over the thread. If it seems like a daunting task search Scholastica16 on the search bar and read all his post related to this thread. Please and please read the thread or skim the thread or just read the thread I would say it again read the thread.

To your question, if you take the GRE by say January and perform quite well, you would have a coterie of nice programs to apply to. Another strategy is to initiate communication with your intended program and supervisors(how to do that is on the thread) so the GRE would be the last thing in your application profile, moreso you don't need the GRE to start the application (now don't misconstrue this statement if the GRE is required and not submitted before the deadline your application would most likely not be considered) as I was saying you can start everything before the GRE is written(everything being, shortlisting of schools, starting those applications, contacting professors with funded lab positions, graduate coordinator inquiry etc.). However most people like the route of GRE/TOEFL, SOP, LOR and then applications in that order. You could/should be able to make the best of your situation. Caveat: The GRE kind of determines what schools you can apply to, not always but it does.

The fall admit semester is the actual semester for start of sessional academic activities so it has more funding , this is not to say you can't be funded for a Spring 2020 admit, just put in your best. Do not rush to take the GRE prepare well ace the exams and apply to schools. Gracias.

Hi guys. I'm new here. I have a question... I finished with a CGPA 3.32/5. I did the unofficial WES Evaluation and my gpa was 3.06/4. I really need to confirm if this can actually be possible because most schools in the US require at least 3/4 GPA for Msc. Thanks

Yeah sure. WES isn't ratio and proportion more about the last 60 hours of your degree. So it's quite possible.

Good day to the whole house.

Please maths gurus... kindly help solve with detailed explanation the GRE question below...

When the positive integer (n) is divided by 3, the remainder is 2, and when (n) is divided by 5, the remainder is 1. what is the least possible value of (n)? what is the greatest value of (n)?

Thanks.

My GRE exam is close by.

The GRE approach would be to look critically at the second premise because it's easier to correlate with the initial premise.

Positive integer N divided by 5 with remainder of 1 ends with a 1 or a 6. So 1,6,11,16,21,26...

For the least possible value just test with the first premise N divided by 3 with generated values from the second premise. Looking through the values 1/3 has R =1 and 6/3 has R=0, 11/3 has R = 2. So 11 is the answer.

I think the simple trick is recognizing the importance and simplicity of the second premise as opposed to the first and using the generated values to test a priori the first premise.

Did they really ask for greatest value of N. That's easily infinity because there would always be a value greater than the greatest value you find out some of the few values I could look through are 56,116.

I'm assuming the question had options in finding the greatest value amongst the option just test the initial generated values with the second premise.
If the options were say
a)1
b)6
c)11
d)21
e)26

To test for least possible value start from the smallest option in ascending order. Likewise for the greatest value start from the greatest value in descending order.

So in that case 11 and 26 would be your answers.

Just recognize the pattern that positive integers N divided by 5 with remainder 1 always end with a 1 or a 6, I think that's what you get to take away from the question.

Thank you so much. I have been able to finally practice with Powerprep after trying out the suggestions you guys gave me.

I was going through your profile and previous posts. Your GRE experience and scores are impressive. Were the questions on the real test far different from the Powerprep. I found the Verbal section of the Powerprep so involved and frustrating despite my effort as well as watching Magoosh videos severally. The Quant's seem to contain a lot of questions on Percentage,Fraction and Decimal. I was expecting a lot of Standard deviation, Probability. It wasn't particularly easy neither was it tough anyway.

Interestingly, you graduated from FUTMx. I graduated in 2012 (ABE).Congratulations on your admission and successful visa interview!

It's been almost a year since I took my test, I might not recall perfectly the nature of the exams. However, in my honest opinion the quant on the exam day was a little bit Harder than the powerprep content. But I also used the Manhattan 8 Series with harder questions than the actual exam, so it helps to raise your practice beyond the difficulty level. The Verbal seems like a replica in difficulty and my test scores and exam scores reflected that. All I said here should have been mentioned in a few of my posts . Goodluck with your prep.

Hi folks,

Please I need some clarification on how to use the PowerPrep II software. I have downloaded it but whenever I try to launch it,it opens in my Internet explorer which doesn't work well compared to my Mozilla. I thought Powerprep II is offline like the TOEFL sampler software. How do I make the software open on my Mozilla? Whenever I launch it on Explorer, it gets to the point where it shows the "Continue" button but fails to respond when I click on it.

Also, I need folks to clarify the difference between Powerprep II and Powerprep plus. My exam is on August 6th and I'm just confused about the whole stuff. I feel my preparation is adequate and I'm doing pretty well in other full test I've taken with Barron and Kaplan as well as diagnostic Tests from Princeton Review and Manhattan 5lb books. I have exhausted the Manhattan 5lb book, Official Guides (Verbal & Quants) and Princeton Review. I have watched all the Magoosh videos I downloaded from this forum. I always try to simulate the exam condition by constantly timing myself in all the practice exercises. I use 1.75 mins and 1.5 minutes for Quants and Verbal questions respectively. It has gretaly helped me and time is hardly an issue for me when I take full timed tests.

Please, I just need the clarification and working links to ets Powerprep II and Powerprep Plus if possible. I also need suggestions on other free online full test sites.

You've got an excellent preparation timeline. For the Powerprep II, Internet Explorer is actually compatible with the Power Prep platform, so you might have to stick to that. I don't think it works with any other browser though I didn't try that. There's another option though, go to the directory of your Powerprep and look for the icon Launch.bat that should give direct access to the Powerprep platform.

Power Prep plus isn't free, unless you plan to buy it, you're better off asking for a PDF format of the question and answers. I think someone posted it the other time cc ponpon. Good luck with your prep.

I don't think you are, it is stated explicitly on the Ds160 page that uploading a passport is a requirement. Try to find a way and upload your passport to avoid complications on that day. More so you're better off when you adhere to all the instructions so you're not left to the mercy of those hustlers at the embassy.

I had my interview at the USA Embassy at Abuja.
A few(or a lot) of check in procedures were the most tasking activities that day.

The Conversation;

VO: Why did you pick this school?

Me: Aligned Faculty interest in Biofuel and sustainable energy Research, I worked on a design project that entailed pyrolysis of agricultural waste to produce Biogas, and also it allows...(VO cuts in)

VO: You have a degree from what university?

Me: Federal University of Technology Minna. My Bachelor's degree is in Chemical Engineering and my Doctorate program is also in Chemical Engineering

VO: You are going for a doctorate program do you have a Masters degree?

Me: Just my Bachelors Degree. The PhD affords me the opportunity to carry out research at the highest academic level. Moreso, I get to apply for a senior lecturing position....

VO: What would you be doing with this degree?

Me: Thats what i just said. I would have the opportunity to apply for a senior lecturing position in my alma matter.. With the recent expansion of the engineering faculty...

VO: What are the major problems facing Biofuel?
Me: Lower Energy Content as compared to fossil fuel, high proportion of glycerol, high water consumption, poor cold properties... And also there's the food vs fuel debate

VO: So I would be approving your Visa, I'm keeping your passport, here's your I20

Me : Thank You

She gave me a Red Paper, with a smaller white slip specifically for F1 Visa Applicants, just reiterating the program start date rule and the 30days mandate, also stated was the fact that I would need my I20 and passport at the point of entry.

The only distinct thing was that she was also standing at her window (Window 9).

Hello Guys,
So I'm worried about something. I applied to a school and was only able to send one reference (out of 2). The other referee had been prevaricative although he showed support prior to my sending the application. I was invited for an interview that happened last week. I didn't even think i'ld be invited seeing that I had just one reference. The interview I believe went well and the professor intimated that I would be admitted. Fast forward to today and I'm yet to receive any notification from the school even though I had been seeing admits from the school on gradcafe. So I go back to the application portal and I see this:
"We do not generally make our decision on an application until we have received all transcripts and references".
Now my questions are: Has anyone secured admission with incomplete references? does my being interviewed mean that they've waived this for me and I'm worrying over nothing?
All efforts to contact the referee so far have proven futile.
P. S. The school is Imperial College, London. I don't know if i'ld go here eventually as funding might be an issue but I just need some good news to keep me going. My US applications have had little headway so far.
I appreciate your feedback.

Schools and their policies undecided I applied to imperial college too and I understand those statements clearly, though I wasn't invited for an interview. Now to your inquiry, some schools would allow an incomplete checklist to not count that much not Imperial though sad. I know a few Us Schools might admit one without the application checklist fulfilled completely. Like someone advised get a new referee if you can, but your best option is to get your prior recommender to do justice to the referee prompt.

On the other hand don't lose hope just yet that USA Admit would come just in time. #Fall 2018 Yes we can.

2. abc is positive
3. ac is positive

I found this in manhattan 5lb and I am still puzzled at why the answer is not 2 and 3. meanwhile, 3 is the answer in the text

I hope you understood delvan's explanation. Well let me just add a bit to it. For the product of the numbers to be greater than 0 then no number is 0 there basic right cheesy

Secondly, all non zero numbers that's positive or negative raised to an even power becomes positive. I mean -2^2 is 4 positive and 4^2 is 16 positive also. So b could be either positive or negative.

Thirdly all numbers raised to an odd power retains the power meaning -2^3 is -8 retaining the negative power while 3^5 is 243 retaining the positive power.

From those premise we realise that a and c must have the same sign, b on the other hand can be negative or positive. So only ac must be positive.

Good luck with your prep.

#Fall 2018 folks I hope we get more positive information like mfarad's own.

I just want to say something that seems needed here though it has been reiterated over and over again. Let's put in at least a bit of an effort, I understand how the USA dream might seem overwhelming but like some of the gurus have said USA isn't running away, and some questions are better answered by your graduate coordinator, people here would do their sincere best for you but there's no general rule. If you ask a question here, you should ask the graduate coordinator the same question just today I mailed my graduate coordinator at LSU and we interchanged four to five mails, and I can tell you I was clarified.

Secondly while you ask other questions here have it within you to start the simple search from Google at least you would always be surprised by what you would learn there. All I'm saying is we should be proactive to an extent.

The forum also has salient answers to the diverse nature of enquiries you could sit back read the forum and take notes. You would be surprised by how much you would learn you might even become an instant Guru cheesy through this assiduous prep.

For graduate students looking for school suggestions start with the "msinus" link then gradschools, gradcafe and a plethora of them. And please and please if you're just arriving to the scene read Femi321's post click on his username, there's a stepwise directive on what's hot and what's not grin.

I wish prospective students the best in their studies, life's battles doesn't always go to the stronger and wiser man the man who wins is the man who thinks he can. You think you can start with your own designated dig up for information and come the forum for clarification I am sure it would be a seamless process for both the enquirer and enquiree. Garcias

hello all... i really need someone to guide me on how to apply to a canadian school

This definitely depends on the particular school, as each application process differs slightly. Most likely you would have to create an account then depending on whether you're applying to undergraduate or postgraduate programs you would have a checklist. GRE, TOEFL, SAT as it applies to individual cases might be requirements or necessary addenda to increase your chances of admission.

You should peruse whatever school's site you've decided to apply to though, get valuable information there. Mail your admission coordinator (graduate or undergraduate) for any discrepancies let's say you didn't meet up a particular cut-off as stated in the site. You would need to write a Statement of Purpose (SOP) you're better off taking important notes and writing a framework of what your SOP would look like from now.

Also check the Canadian Student Visa Thread on this forum for salient information. Good luck with your application process, the Canadian Visa has gotten tricky so you might want to distinct your application from the pool of applicants they see every time, check up courses with prospective employments and see which one suits your profile.

Hello folks....I'm a little bit confused. It has been said here times without number that Princeton review is good for verbal and quant strategies.....
I have 2 textbooks of Princeton review (cracking the GRE and 1,014 practice questions).
which one is applicable to verbal? and
which one is applicable to quant strategies?
Thanks
The practice questions has a good collection of standard verbal GRE questions, the quant is okay too but I would recommend the Manhattan 8 series for salient quant strategies. Try and get the Magoosh videos too, the explanations in both verbal and quant would go a long way to improve your pace, accuracy and elimination strategies, important GRE traits. Good luck with your prep.
