A 23-year-old independent candidate is the next #Kenya (Igembe South) Member of Parliament (MP) after he was declared winner Thursday morning. #NotTooYoungToRun #ElectionsKE2017 As counting was still going on at the Maua Girls School constituency tallying centre, John Paul Mwirigi last evening had a 76 per cent lead on his closest contender, who had 13 per cent. Mr Mwirigi, who is pursuing a degree in education at Mount Kenya University, was vying as an independent candidate. He was competing against Jubilee candidate Rufus Miriti, Mzalendo Mwenda (PNU), Mutuma Kubai of Maendeleo Chap Chap, and DP's Raphael Muringi. Supporters of the soft-spoken leader camped outside the tallying centre as the counting was going on, ignoring police orders to keep off. When they realised that their preferred candidate was leading with a big margin, they started celebrating, prompting the police and IEBC officials to allow them to get the youthful leader out of the tallying centre for a celebration in Maua town. They did rounds in Maua town before going to a valley to hold prayers. Mwirigi attributed his victory to his closeness to mwananchi and his involvement in community development activities. He said he is from a poor background and it is a miracle that he even got university fees. Lucida Sans Unicode]Oyo workers ’ll enjoy N18,000 minimum wage from May 1 - Alao-Akala •Says governance remains potent until last admissible date •It is morally wrong - Governor-elect OYO State governor, Chief Adebayo Alao-Akala, has insisted that he will not renege on his promise to pay the N18,000 minimum wage to public workers in the state, saying that its implementation is a covenant between him and the workers. The governor had, during an inter-denominational service organised by the state Head of Service, Alhaja Iyabo Adeleke, at the Governor’s Office last March, promised to effect the payment of the new wage, saying that it was a legal entitlement of public workers in the state. The Governor-elect of the state, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, had, on Sunday, warned the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-led government in the state against approving a new minimum wage for workers in the state at the twilight of the administration. He had also said that it would be morally wrong for the governor to embark on such venture after he had been voted out of office, adding that it would be proper for him (Alao-Akala) to allow the in-coming administration to take such a decision. However, Governor Alao-Akala, in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Public Communications, Prince Dotun Oyelade, and made available to Nigerian Tribune on Monday, turned down Ajimobi’s request to stop the implementation of the new salary, declaring that public workers in the state would start enjoying the minimum wage from May 1, 2011. Expressing his regrets for his inability to accede to the request made by Ajimobi, the governor said that the promise to pay the minimum wage, which he said he voluntarily made on Tuesday, March 29, 2011, had become a covenant between him and the workers. Taking an exception to Ajimobi’s description of his action as suspicious and controversial, Alao-Akala said that he gave the promise then out of the conviction that he would be the one to implement it, asking: “What kind of leader will I be if I have to acquiesce to reneging on a promise I made to my people? I wish to leave behind a legacy of policy consistency”, he said. He also disagreed with Senator Ajimobi that it was morally wrong for him (Alao-Akala) to initiate a project that he would not implement, saying that, “while it is morally and legally correct for him to effect minimum wage, governance is a continuum and its entity remains potent until the last admissible date. “In any case, former Governor Lam Adesina sealed a whopping N1.8 billion contract for an international market and water projects in the dying days of his administration, while Senator Rashidi Ladoja increased workers’ salaries and allowances a few days before his departure”, he said. Expressing his determination to go ahead with the payment of the minimum wage, Governor Alao-Akala, in the statement, declared: “The workers in Oyo State will enjoy minimum wage of N18,000 from May 1, 2011 and it is their right to reject the offer.” Furthermore, Senator Ajimobi, has said that the payment of the new minimum wage could not be implemented with just a statement, adding that, though the law had been passed but it had not been ratified. The governor-elect who spoke through his Director for Media and Publicity, Mr Yanju Adegbite, in Ibadan, said that the issue was more sensitive than just issuing a statement. While noting that the governor was yet to ratify the new law, he said it could not be paid without ratification by the governor. “As of this morning, the law is yet to be ratified as the governor was not around,” he said. |

Five days after the murder of Lateef Salako (aka Eleweomo), the factional leader of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Teslim Folarin, the Senate majority leader, and three others were yesterday arraigned for the murder. The other accused persons are: Ramoni Jayeoba, Bankole Olaide Raji, and Raimi Ismaila. They were arraigned on a two-count charge of conspiracy to murder and murder of the slain transport union leader. Eleweomo was killed on Thursday last week during the People’s Democratic Party Congress at Akaran in Ona Ara local government area in Ibadan. He was killed during a fracas at the congress. Behind bars Beaming with smile, the Senator was brought to the court premises at 11.24 am amidst tight security. Before his arraignment, he had spent more than 24 hours with the police since he honoured their invitation on Monday. Mr. Folarin, on Monday, was quizzed for more than three hours by the commissioner of police, Oyo State Command, Baba Adisa Bolanta. He was later driven to the state’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Iyaganku, and was detained at the station till he was brought to court yesterday. He, however, was not alone as he was joined by the leader of the opposition against the second term bid of Oyo State governor, Adebayo Alao-Akala; fourth Republic Senator, Lekan Balogun; governorship aspirants of the party, Wole Oyelese and Yekini Adeojo, as well as a former Secretary to the Government in the Rashidi Ladoja administration, Sarafadeen Alli; former vice chairman of the Oyo State Pilgrims Board, Abass Oloko, and Alli Oyedeji (a.k.a. Alli Dodo), among many others. The court premises was populated by a crowd of supporters who came to show their support for Mr. Folarin. Armed security men drafted to curtail possible breakdown of law and order had a hectic time controlling the crowd of supporters. Immediately the accused persons were brought to the court, the Magistrate, Fatima Badrudeen, whose court was still in session, rose and briefly retired to her chambers to allow them settle before going on. The court resumed some few minutes later to take Mr. Folarin and others’ case. But, unlike the usual practice, the court only read the allegations against the accused persons to their hearings without taking their plea. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and immediate past president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), led other 14 lawyers to defend the accused persons. Mr. Akeredolu wondered why the police had to take the accused to a Magistrate’s Court when they knew quite well that it lacked the jurisdiction to hear criminal matters. “I am obliged of the charge sheet of this case and I have read through. The offences there are not ones within the jurisdiction of your court. I am sure you are also aware of this. The best your court can do is to take them on holden charge. But we are here before you. You do not need to take their pleas,” he told the magistrate. Concurring with his argument, Mrs. Badrudeen said she had only asked the court clerk to read their alleged offences to them, and not to take the pleas. Public humiliation After reading the offences, Mr. Akeredolu prayed the court to remand the accused persons in Agodi Prison pending the time proper charge will be prepared and brought before a High Court. The police prosecutor, A. Ojeh, did not object to the prayer, and after consultation between the two parties, they agreed to come back on January 14. In line with their agreement, the Magistrate ordered that they be remanded in the prison and adjourned the matter till January 14 for mention. Many supporters of Mr. Folarin, including Mr. Oloko, could not control their emotions. They broke into tears as he was driven out of the court’s premises in a pick-up van belonging to the Nigeria Prisons around 12.23p.m. Shortly before he was taken away to the prison, Mr. Balogun told the press that Mr. Bolanta had only tricked Mr. Folarin into a public humiliation. He hinted that he had advised Mr. Folarin against showing up in his office on a public holiday, but rather take legal action to enforce his right. “I warned him. But I think this will toughen him as a politician. Rather than humiliate him, they have made him more popular. You can see how the crowd cheered him,” he said. Mr. Balogun added that the people will stage a protest against Mr. Bolanta on January 15 to call for his redeployment from Oyo State “before he spoils our state for us.” He also vowed to fight against the re-election of Mr. Alao-Akala as governor in the next election http://234next.com/csp/cms/sites/Next/News/5660728-146/court_remands_senate_majority_leader_over.csp |

A mild drama ensued at the Presidential Wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, Monday, as former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, was attacked by a middle-aged man who pounced on him inside his car. The incident occurred at about 9:20a.m.[img][/img] The former president’s attacker, whose identity was not immediately known, had earlier before Obasanjo’s arrival attempted to enter the presidential wing of the airport, but was turned back by Air Force personnel manning the gate, especially as he could not explain his mission at the wing. The man was not only denied entry, but was also driven away from the precincts of the wing and told never to return to the area, particularly as President Goodluck Jonathan’s presidential jet was parked at the wing. The ambush Unknown to the Air Force personnel and some mobile policemen whose presence at the airport was due to the president’s presence in Lagos, the man had laid ambush, hiding behind the fence of the car park attached to the presidential lounge. *Obasanjo Former President Obasanjo’s chartered jet touched down a few minutes after 9:00a.m., and the former president, in his usual jocular manner exchanged banters with press men attached to the presidential lounge. He then hopped into his car, a Toyota Landcruiser special utility vehicle, SUV, sandwiched between two excort vehicles with his security aides, leaving behind Chief Kenny Martins who came to receive him. The attack As the convoy of three vehicles tried to negotiate its way into Airport Road, towards the local wing of the airport, the man emerged from nowhere. He ran towards the Jeep in the middle of the convoy, opened the door and started kicking and raining blows on the former President. Rescue The opening of the door of Obasanjo’s car drew the attention of both the Air Force personnel and Mobile Policemen some 100 metres away, and they quickly dragged the man out of the car and gave him the beating of his life. When he recovered from the attack, the visibly shaken Obasanjo immediately asked his driver to drive off, while scores of security men had rounded up the attacker who, amidst beatings, screamed persistently “America is watching, …America is watching.” The man attempted to escape, but when some of the military personnel cocked their guns to shoot, he quickly laid on the floor begging for leniency. Aftermath The man, who looked well fed and dressed up, was dragged to the Air Force wing of the airport, as he refused to explain his mission and motive behind the attack of the former President. The development prompted tightening of security at the presidential wing, as every person or vehicle entering the lounge and car park were subjected to stringent security screening. |

Militant Group implicates IBB on Abuja Bomb Blast http://www.pointblanknews.com/News/os4022.html UNREPENTANT militants of the Niger Delta have introduced another seeming curious dimension to the alleged terrorist attack in Abuja on Friday, October 1, 2010. The Joint Revolutionary Council (JRC), a network of some unrepentant insurgents, claimed in an on-line statement to AkanimoReports on Thursday that former military ruler and a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential aspirant, General Ibrahim Babangida, was behind the attack. Spokesperson of the group, Mr. Bakabio Walter, said in the statement: ''We were approached earlier by agents of IBB to carry out attacks in the Niger Delta and Abuja to demystify President Goodluck Jonathan and show that he does not have the support of his people, but we declined''. According to them, ''it was because of this that we suspended our armed campaign this year. We realised that IBB was going to use our genuine agitation to his own selfish, unpatriotic and over ambitious advantage''. ''It was when we declined that they approached Henry Okah who is a mercenary by nature, and they started with the Warri bomb blasts followed by this October 1, attacks'', they added. Continuing, the JRC said, ''for now we can say authoritatively that Okah heads IBB's terror machine and theirs is more sophisticated than what they have done so far. Jonathan beware! ''Recent events in the politics of the Nigerian State further exposes the ethnic and national contradictions and justify our agitations for self determination and call for a Sovereign National Conference of all the nationalities that were forcefully conscripted into Nigeria. This is the only peaceful way of getting out of this babarism that is threatening to create the biggest refugee problem in the world. ''We would like to use this medium to warn Nigeria's dirty politicians not to drag our region and its genuine struggle into their muddy water of politics. ''Also, those who are planning to organise a coup de'tat should know that they would have us to contend with as we will never allow their authority to extend into our region. We are watching keenly as the drama unfolds, knowing that after all this mad dance of macabre we shall meet at the barricade''. |
@Youngichou:Who is the right candidate from your region? As some others contributors have rightly said. GEJ may be your last chance to produce President of this country. No perfect candidate anywhere in the world. Even if Barack Obama-like is the president of Nigeria, people will still complain. Nigerians what exactly do you need? |
I don’t know why you people will never see any good in Akala. Many of you who are crucifying Akala are ignorant of his great achievements in Ibadan. Most of you have never been to Ibadan yet you base your judgement on what you see on the internet and newspapers. I don’t know why the press disgust this man Go you Oyo state today the testimony of Akala’s achievements abound. Good Roads, traffic control system, health care, agriculture etc. What else do you want ![]() All I know is that the people of Oyo state know what they want and what is good for them. Alaka will definitely come in for another term. You people are just sentimental based on the Adedoja ‘s impeachment saga . There is no justification for you bad opinion of the man Alao Akala. If you can take time and evaluate this man, s performance and stop being bias, you will see that Alao Akala has done more good than so many governors in the south west. Leave Akala alone.
