Chancellors broker truce
between FG, ASUU
In a meeting that lasted over
three hours in Abuja on Tuesday
night, the Committee of Vice
Chancellors brokered a truce
between the leadership of ASUU
and the Federal Government on
the outstanding fresh demands
issued by ASUU.
Scan News learnt that the truce
may lead to the suspension of
the strike in the coming days. It
was also gathered that the
Committee of Vice Chancellors
presented details of the account
established by the Federal
Government to the ASUU
leadership, with proofs of the
letter written to the Accountant
General of the Federation by the
Deputy Governor of CBN.
The VCs who had earlier met
with the Permanent Secretary of
the Federal Ministry of Education,
Dr MacJohn Nwaobiala further
broke out the copy of the letter
written by the Permanent
Secretary to the ASUU leadership
detailing the resolution reached
at the meeting with the
President, and the pattern and
timelines for the implementation
of the projects.
At the close of the meeting, the
VCs left with the ASUU leadership
to the National Universities
Commission, NUC, where they
met with top government
officials and the NUC Executive
Secretary, Prof Julius Okojie.
A source who attended the
meeting said it was fruitful as the
ASUU leadership, the Committee
of Vice Chancellors, the NUC and
the officials of the Federal
Ministry of Education agreed on
the constitution of a Monitoring
and Implementation committee
to see through the execution of
projects under the first tranche
of N200billion, already confirmed
by the CBN.
The Executive Secretary of the
NUC, Prof. Julius Okojie, it was
said also presented a copy of the
letter confirming the release of
the funds to the ASUU leadership.
On Wednesday morning, the
leadership of the Committee of
Vice Chancellors, met with the
Supervising Minister of
Education, Barr. Nyesom Wike in
his office at the Federal Ministry
of Education. Also in attendance
were the representatives of the
NUC and the Permanent Secretary
of the Ministry.
The meeting, it was learnt,
discussed the key points of
concessions reached at the
Tuesday meeting with ASUU
leadership and the setting up of
the Monitoring and
Implementation Committee. The
Minister and the selected Vice
Chancellors left for the
Presidential Villa to ratify the
decision reached.
