Security sources told SaharaReporters that the two kidnap incidents took place yesterday in Oron, in the southern part of the state. A relative of the kidnap victim told our correspondents that her kidnappers used sledgehammers and other tools to breach the wall and gain access into the building which is located close to the Oron area headquarters of the Nigerian police. Other residents in the area told SaharaReporters that the nearby police station failed to provide help despite several distress calls made to the police as the incident was taking place. Our sources disclosed that the armed gunmen seized the Toyota Land Cruiser belonging to the family of the victim after firing several gunshots to scare away residents of the neighborhood. “They attempted to drive away with their victim only to discover that the SUV was out of fuel a few meters from the compound,” said a resident. In anger, the kidnappers reportedly returned to the house perhaps to shoot the husband of their victim, but the man had escaped to safety. The kidnappers then took away their victim in a back-up car. SaharaReporters learnt that the kidnappers have demanded a ransom of N15 million to free their hostage. http://saharareporters.com/news-page/akwa-ibom-two-kidnap-incidents-recorded-within-24-hours-oron |
Chairman, House of Representatives’ Committee on International Agreements and Conventions, Hon. Ekundayo Bush-Alebiosu, spoke with Gboyega Akinsanmi on the plight of Bakassi people as well as diverse issues, including the domestication of treaties to which Nigeria is a signatory. Excerpts... The Cross Rivers State House of Assembly has called for a review of the judgment of International Court of Justice that ceded Bakassi to Cameroon. Do you see any prospect in the renewed agitation? First of all, we need to understand that the International Court of Justice (ICJ) had given its judgement on the issue. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo was blamed for going to the court on the issue. It contravenes the fact that he did not go to court. Cameroon dragged us to court on the issue. What we should have done before the matter was dragged to the ICJ was that we should have made a declaration that ‘we refuse to lay ourselves to the rulings of the ICJ.’ But we did not. We actually put up a defence and paid hundreds of millions of dollars from what we had gathered as professional fees. Now we have found ourselves in what we have found ourselves. http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/blame-obasanjo-for-bakassi-s-plight/121916/ |
The one billion US dollars recommended by UNEP as start-up fund for Ogoni clean-up for the first five years must be spent on Ogoni alone. This development should not become an avenue for making money because people are suffering and the FGN should make it it's agenda to monitor every step carried out in that community. |
The Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP) has said it accepts the Hydro-carbon Pollution Restoration Programme (HYPREP) for the implementation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) report for the clean-up of Ogoniland. The Federal Government last Monday announced the setting up of HYPREP for the restoration of areas devastated by oil pollution in the Niger Delta. In a statement issued in Port Harcourt Wednesday, MOSOP however expressed dissatisfaction that it took the government one year to commence the implementation of the UNEP report despite the urgency of the situation. The statement which was jointly signed by the Chairman of MOSOP Provisional Council, Professor Ben Naanen, and a member of the Council and Bishop of the Ogoni Diocese of Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Rev. Solomon Gberegbara, said the decision to accept HYPREP was taken at the congress of the Ogoni people held at the Peace and Freedom Centre, Bori, to mark one year of the release of UNEP Report. The statement however said the congress accepted HYPREP because of the realisation that most other parts of the Niger Delta region also suffered from oil-related pollution and the guarantee given to Ogoni people by the Federal Government on the implementation of the UNEP report. The guarantees extracted from representatives of HYPREP and NOSDRA, according to the statement, include that: “The UNEP recommendations on Ogoni will be fully and faithfully implemented irrespective of HYPREP’s intervention in other areas; http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/mosop-accepts-hyprep-for-clean-up-of-ogoniland/121934/

Abuja – The Conscience Nigeria, an NGO, says the U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s visit to Nigeria will strengthen the existing bilateral relationship between the two countries. Also the Country Director of Oxfam Nigeria, Dr Chidi Aniagolu-Okoye, says Nigeria should use the opportunity of U.S. Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton’s visit to build a strategic relationship with the U.S. The Executive Director of the NGO, Mr Tosin Adeyanju, made the remark in an interview in Abuja on Wednesday. Adeyanju said that the visit was coming at the right time when Nigeria was being confronted with security challenges. He noted that Nigeria would learned a lot from the experience of America’s effort in fighting terrorism since the Sept. 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Centre. The director urged the Federal Government to use this golden opportunity to explore other ways to expand economic frontiers of the country in collaboration with the U.S. Mr Olayemi Success, Programme Officer of National Youth Council (NYC) urged the Federal Government to develop a youth policy on mechanised agriculture to reduce the level of unemployment. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2012/08/hillary-clintons-visit-will-strengthen-nigeria-u-s-bilateral-relations-ngo/ |

It may be our day of glory,” was the simple way Technical Director of Athletics Federation of Nigeria, Navy Captain Omatseye Nesiama described today. Before then two other Nigerians qualified for the final of their events today. Nigeria has never had it so good in these London Games. Ajoke Odumosu had pushed in the race of her life to set a national record in the Women’s 400m Hurdles event. She finished first in her semi-final heat with a time of 54.40 secs and yelled “I’m feeling good. This is great.” On getting to the finish line Ajoke screamed, celebrating her feat.”I’ll give it the shot of my life,” she said of the final today.“I think it will be our day of glory,” Nesiama said, referring to the way Ajoke powered home to win her event. She is now enjoying rave previews but the Nigerian camp is being careful in order not to mount pressure on her. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2012/08/odumosu-oke-raise-hope-for-nigeria/ |
After suffering delays caused by the January protests over the fuel subsidy removal, the Federal Government Monday announced that it has commenced the implementation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) report on the clean-up of Ogoniland, damaged by years of oil exploration.http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/federal-govt-begins-clean-up-of-ogoniland/121749/ |
President Barack Obama is having more difficulty keeping 2008 supporters on his side than Mitt Romney is having holding onto John McCain voters, according to a new Gallup poll. A survey of registered voters conducted July 23-29 found that 92 percent of Americans who voted for McCain in 2008 plan to vote for Romney this fall and just 5 percent have switched sides to support Obama. But among Obama's 2008 supporters, just 86 percent are planning to do so again and 9 percent are switching their support to Romney, reports The Ticket. Overall 11 percent of voters who say they cast ballots for Obama or McCain are supporting the other party's candidate. The margin of error for all 2008 voters is plus or minus 3 percentage points. For the sample of Obama or McCain voters, the margin of error is plus or minus 4 percentage points. |
By Onochie Anibeze An official from a sport neglected in Nigeria yesterday pleaded with President Goodluck Jonathan to restructure sports in Nigeria and make it more result-oriented. The official who begged for anonymity cried out to the President when reports had it that more than N2b had been released for the Olympic Games here in London. He was bitter that the money was released so late that it did not help Nigeria’s preparation for the ongoing London Games. Nigeria’s flagbearer Sinivie Boltic (C) leads his delegation during the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games on July 27, 2012 at the Olympic Stadium in London. AFP PHOTO “N2b can help our sports and help us win gold medals at the Olympic Games if it is released in time and spread over four years for preparation,” the official said, lamenting that the last minute release of funds only creates room for corruption as the whole money is hardly used for the purpose for which it was meant. “About N2.3b was said to be the total so far released for the London games but I am sure that they have not spent more than N800m on our preparation and they couldn’t have spent more than N200m here in London because the host is providing accommodation, feeding the athletes and providing some other logistics for all teams,” the official said. He continued: “From the last Olympics in Beijing till date if we used N2b to develop our athletes, train them, expose them and enter them for competitions I will be telling you how many gold medals we can win here in London. But we are still running sports according to government lines and all monies approved and allocated each year must be spent that year and when we have the Olympic games we will be waiting for budget approval and implementation to start preparation at the time others would have finished theirs. The whole thing is wrong. As far as I’m concerned the N2b released for the London Games was more of a waste because the money did not do much for our preparation. It came late and we could have done better with such an amount. I want our President to restructure our sports so that funds released for sports will be useful to sports because we are not developing sports in Nigeria, we only attend competitions where we spend a lot without spending when it matters most.” What the official complained of has been the practice in Nigeria for years but appears more pronounced now than ever before. The National Sports Commission was even said to have borrowed money to execute some Olympic qualifying events. But now they could have more than they would need to compete here. |

It is obvious that the corruption crisis in Nigeria is gradually degenerating to the most deplorable state. The frequency and arrogance associated with this vice shows that the Nigeria 37th state is corruption and the beneficiaries are the same corrupt elites with their children as the operatives of this evil state. Corruption has become an acceptable way of doing business for those in public offices. The government is powerless in its fight against corruption because those appointed to either investigate or prosecute are corrupt or loyal to their corrupt god fathers. Therefore, we are in a vicious circle and any attempt to step out of this circle can be seen as a qualified betrayal of their masters. The Nigerian state is craving for a dramatic overhaul of the institutions and the operatives of the system. The problem faced with such transformation is that the will power is lacking and there is no sincerity of purpose. The Nigeria nation is set on a visionless journey by selfish individuals that have controlled the resources of this country since its independence. They have metamorphosed from military to armed politicians, controlling the resources of this great nation, brutalising its ability to grow and shattering the hopes of millions of innocent citizens. We have witnessed the various scams at the high levels of government, state governors, state assembly, national assembly, pension funds, oil subsidy fraud etc, the lists could go on and on. The recent indictment of the sons of the respective political leaders is a clear manifestation that this nation is faced with a serious war within. A nation where fathers deny their sons to save their jobs and political status. Nigerians should wake up to the reality of life; these individuals feel that all Nigerians are cowards, maybe, by distancing themselves from their indicted sons and daughters can be seen as a reasonable and decent thing to do, but the truth remains that these families have destroyed many Nigerians by denying them quality education, jobs, good roads, electricity, quality life and above all security of life’s and properties. It is alright to deny their corrupt children on the pages of the newspapers but to turn around to raise fund for their bail and manipulate the judicial process that will finally set them free. Nigerians should wake up, stand up for what is right and reclaim your destiny and freedom from these individuals. This is an internal war declared against millions of Nigerians. This is no corruption but modern day robbery and slavery. These individuals have used military coup d’état, religious uprising, ethnic bigotry, political thuggery, corruption, kidnapping and now the Boko-Haram sect to continue to destabilise the unity of this great nation. We must not allow them to achieve this sole purpose. The media must begin to acknowledge the reality on the ground and help in reshaping the mind set of Nigerians before Nigeria turns to the likes of old Liberia or Sierra Leone. Nigeria problem is neither religion nor ethnicity, it is corruption. The nation can prosper, attain the best developmental height and compete with the richest and developed nations of the world, if corruption can be minimized in Nigerian. It takes genuine vision, will power and sincerity of purpose. Mr. Ikechi Okologo (LLB. US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton By Tokunbo Adedoja THISDAY LIVE The United States has fingered some state governments and politicians as being behind the spate of communal and sectarian violence rocking Nigeria. It identified the main targets of such violence to include political and ethnic rivals, businesses, homes, churches, mosques and rural villages. It said in the latest International Religious Freedom Report for 2011, released on Monday that there were reports of abuses of religious freedom by some state officials and politicians. The Department of State in compliance with Section 102(b) of the International Religious Freedom Act (IRFA) of 1998, submitted a report to the US Congress on the matter. The report is used by many US government agencies and offices to shape policy; conduct diplomacy; and inform assistance, training, and other resource allocations. The latest report, which also indicted the Federal Government for not acting swiftly or effectively to quell communal violence nor investigate and prosecute those responsible for such violence, said: “Federal, state and local authorities have not effectively addressed underlying political, ethnic and religious grievances that lead to violence.” It noted that in 2011, government responded to conflict and groups it considered violent extremists in ways that restricted religious freedom and contributed to societal intolerance, adding, “Authorities often failed to distinguish between peaceful religious practice and criminal or terrorist activities.” The US, however, added that while there were no credible reports of abuses of religious freedom by the Federal Government, a climate of impunity exists in Nigeria because of the reluctance to punish perpetrators of violence. The report said despite the fact that the constitution and other laws and policies protect religious freedom and forbid adoption of any religion as state religion, there were reports of societal abuses or discrimination based on religious affiliation, belief or practice. “In February (2011), Niger State authorities reportedly dislodged a small Islamic group called Islahuddeen, which had allegedly spoken out against the state government from the Mashegu, Mariga and Kontagora Local Government Areas. “Armed police allegedly bulldozed the group’s central mosque and other buildings and took members into custody for an indeterminate amount of time,” the report added. It also cited the law that the Katsina State legislature passed last October that many opponents believed inhibited the freedom of Muslim clerics to preach openly against the government as another example of government’s attempts to regulate religious practice in Nigeria. The report said in some Northern states, authorities reportedly denied building permits for the construction of churches and expansion and renovation of existing ones, while churches occasionally applied for residential permits as alternatives. The report added that Muslims in the predominantly Christian southern part of Kaduna State accused local government officials of stopping the construction of mosques and Islamic schools. The report said despite the fact that the Nigerian constitution provides for separation of religion and state, many Christians have argued that the widespread use of Sharia courts for adjudication in some Northern states amounted to the adoption of Islam as a state religion. “Although the jurisdiction of Sharia technically does not apply to non-Muslims in civil and criminal proceedings, certain social mores inspired by Sharia, such as the separation of the sexes in public schools, health care, voting, and transportation services, affected non-Muslim minorities in the North. “Many non-Muslims perceived that they lived under the rule of a Muslim government and often feared reprisals for their religious affiliation,” the report added. The report also noted the case of Zamfara State, which promoted Islam as a state religion through the establishment of a Commission for Religious Affairs that tended to favour Muslims. It cited a recommendation by the commission to the state government to fund the construction of mosques without similar recommendation to use state funds for the construction of churches. It also drew attention to the non-implementation of the reports of many commissions set up by the Federal and Plateau State Governments on the internecine clashes in Jos, the state capital, and its environs. On Boko Haram, the report said: “Boko Haram has likely killed more Muslims than Christians, since its primary bases of operation have existed in the predominantly Muslim North.” It described Boko Haram as an extremist sect which aims to overthrow the Federal Government and imposed a stricter form of Sharia nationwide. On Nigeria’s religious demography, the report said: “Many groups estimate the population to be 50 per cent Muslim, 45 per cent Christian, and 5 per cent practitioners of indigenous religious beliefs.” Giving a breakdown of the demography, it said the North is dominated by the Hausa-Fulani and Kanuri ethnic groups who are predominantly Muslims, while significant Christian communities reside and intermarry with Muslims in the area for more than 50 years. It added that both Muslims and Christians reside in about equal numbers in the “Middle Belt”, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and the South-west, where the Yoruba ethnic group predominates, with most of them practising either Christianity or Islam, while the practice of traditional Yoruba religious beliefs continues. In the South-east, where the Igbo ethnic group is dominant, and in the Niger Delta region, where the Ogoni and Ijaw ethnic groups are most numerous, it noted that Christians form the majority, with only an estimated 1 per cent Muslim population in the latter. The report said US officials discussed religious freedom with the Nigerian government as part of its overall policy to promote human rights and also encourage government to address sectarian violence in a sensitive manner. “The main message involved encouraging authorities to bring the perpetrators of violence to justice while respecting human rights and to modify its record of impunity to deter future acts of violence,” it added. Apart from shaping US government policy towards countries appraised, the Secretary of State Hillary Clinton also uses the report to help determine which countries have engaged in or tolerated “particularly severe violations” of religious freedom, otherwise known as countries of particular concern. |
Okay lets go there!!! |
Okay, thank you all for this great idea but i think or know that another another committee should be formed so as it will review the work of that comittee and report to a comittee of governors drawn from the affected states. Nigeria is all about scam, i don tire.. |
