Footage posted on the social media account of Patience Abbo, wife of former Adamawa North senator, Ishaku Abbo, has exposed a breach of airport security protocols after she gained access to a restricted operational area to escort her husband to the foot of a waiting aircraft. In the video, believed to have been recorded at the Yola Airport, based on visible terminal markings, Mrs Abbo is seen walking across the apron near the aircraft staircase. She is captured exchanging a black phone case with her husband, embracing him in a farewell gesture, and then turning back as he boarded the plane. The footage also shows the interaction being recorded from within the restricted area by a third party, raising further questions about who had access to the operational zone at the time. The video, which remained publicly accessible on her account at the time of filing this report, sparked concerns about the enforcement of Nigeria’s aviation security regulations. Aviation security globally is governed by strict standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). Under ICAO Annex 17, member states are required to establish stringent measures “to prevent unauthorised access to aircraft, restricted airport areas and other sensitive operational zones.” Nigeria domesticates these standards through the Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations (Nig.CARs) Part 17 on Aviation Security. The regulations define the airport “airside” as “the movement area of an airport, adjacent terrain and buildings or portions thereof, access to which is controlled.” Under the Nig.CARs Part 17.50 series, aerodrome operators are legally required to implement strict access control measures to prevent unauthorised access to aircraft and to closely supervise all activities around aircraft operations. Access beyond security screening points to the ramp or aircraft is strictly restricted to screened passengers with valid boarding passes, accredited airline crew, and airport personnel wearing visible On-Duty Cards (ODCs). While regulations make provision for an “escort,” this is strictly defined as authorised security accompaniment for cleared personnel. It does not extend to casual tarmac farewells by non-travelling family members. Airport security officials interviewed by PREMIUM TIMES at Sokoto Airport said only screened travellers and authorised personnel are permitted access to restricted airside areas. Abubakar Manir, officer-in-charge of the Crime, Intelligence and Investigation Unit of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) in Sokoto, told this reporter that high-profile individuals are not exempt from core safety procedures. “Everyone is subject to screening. The Sultan – even if the Sultan comes here, he must pass through the screening points,” Mr Manir said. He noted that while certain top-tier VIPs, such as governors, ministers, and first-class traditional rulers, are traditionally afforded protocol aides, regular lawmakers often travel without large entourages. More importantly, he stressed that no protocol privilege permits a non-travelling spouse to bypass terminal gates onto the aircraft movement area. “Nobody is allowed to access the ramp. Nobody is allowed to go beyond these screening points unless you are a traveller,” another terminal security officer said. “As far as the rules are concerned, there is no escort beyond the screening point.” Beyond the regulatory breach, security experts warn that the presence of untrained civilians on the airport apron poses serious operational risks. Mr Manir disclosed the dangers of influential figures converging on operational airfields. “There are a lot of risks associated, especially for those who are not travelling… Some aircraft have propeller engines. Once they start the engine, a civilian might not know the safety procedure. If you are too close, the jet blast or propeller can hit you,” he warned The video has reignited public debate about the selective enforcement of airport rules in Nigeria. While ordinary citizens are routinely stopped at terminal glass doors and prevented from walking relatives to boarding gates, political elites and their families frequently enjoy unhindered access to aircraft steps through informal “VIP protocol” arrangements. The incident raises serious questions for FAAN about how a non-travelling civilian and an accompanying videographer gained access to the restricted tarmac, and whether airport security personnel on duty compromised established safety protocols. Responses still expected Mr Abbo did not answer multiple calls to his official line. Similarly, inquiries made through the official channels of the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development and FAAN headquarters yielded no immediate response, with officials stating that responses were being processed. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/883830-ex-senators-wife-breaches-airport-security-escorts-husband-to-aircraft.html |
I keep asking these same questions. How can the terrorists abduct several people and move them around without being noticed? What sort of GSM communication or gadgets do they use to make their demands that can't be traced? How are these ransom delivered that they can't be traced? An innocent man slaughtered like chicken just because he is a Nigerian? We have had insecurity issues for some time but since Buhari's administration, these have been allowed to fester without care. You allowed impunity, others would commit same crime even in greater magnitude cos at the end, just like the others, no serious action by the authority. I knew we were in serious trouble when an army general was killed and 'nothing' happened. Just the usual rhetoric. The teacher that was slaughtered was someone's son, father, husband, brother, uncle, friend. bewisemasses: |
seunowa:And why can't the government through the security agencies go after these people. It is not logical at all. |
WHERE IS GUMI ON THIS? |
How can you campaign and win an election on a political platform and because of whatever selfish interests you decide to decamp to another party. Both the ruling and opposition parties are guilty of this. What happens to the electorate that voted based on party line? Should they also be forced to decamp? I won't be surprised if another party comes to power and you see most of these same politicians jumping ship |
Was it not the same party that was in power during Buhari's administration and even had President Tinubu as the National Leader? Does it mean APC, as a party, has no blue print for economic growth? I guess it means when President Tinubu leaves office and peradventure, another APC man comes on board as the president, then we will start from the scratch, again? boom99: |
emkz:My question here is that is it not the same APC party that had Buhari as president. During the time of Buhari we were told to be patient after they spent the first 4 years blaming the Jonathan administration for everything. We are suppose to be consolidating on the gains, if there was any, of the past administration of the same party, and not for a worsening situation like we are having at the moment. |
It is rather disheartening that some people are attacking the news to be fake, but in the same breath calling out some people/groups to be the perpetrators of the fake news. If you can't prove your claim, then it simply means you are also guilty. |
It is good to go out there and win souls, but what exactly is being done to 'keep' them if they are eventually won? I have worked closely with the pastorate of one of the well established assemblies of LFC in Abuja and I know what transpires. Some members here make their assumptions based on what they see from afar or what they hear. But it goes beyond all that. The population of a church shouldn't be used as the yardstick to judge its growth but the nos of souls actually saved. If you have so many churches in a locality and the vices there are not reflecting it, then there's an underlying issue(s). The Follow Up unit in LFC used to be quite effective, but not anymore, at least in my assembly. I think the church is more interested in the nos of first timers that come for every Sunday service than the ones that are genuinely saved. As for the income part, there's more to it, but what I'd state here for now is that whatever the local assembly generates, small part of it is retained to cater for it while most of it is transferred to the national headquarters. On this, there have been murmurings, but no senior pastor, I am aware of, has openly kicked against it. If you know how much is retained you'd feel sorry for some of these local assemblies. And you are on your own if it runs out before the end of that particular month and I have seen it happen severally. Even accommodation for the pastors, apart from the senior, is a huge wahala on its own. |
This is disheartening. Our security is really in shambles!!!! |
Skyfornia:I quite agree on some police men being high sometimes, especially at night. 2 years ago, my wife and I stopped at the junction of the Federal Medical Center (FMC) Airport Road, Jabi, to ask some policemen in their patrol van direction to the place. My car internal light was lit to show that it was just me and my wife in the car, I had just greeted the officers and was about to ask for direction after the officer closest to us had responded, only for one policeman in the dark to jump to my wife's side of the car with gun cocked and I am still pretty sure his finger was already on the trigger. "Yes, Oga wetin you want?" The expression on his face was of a drunk with glazed eyes and he was swaying from side to side with gun pointed at us. It was his colleague that was attending to us that quickly told him to calm down that he was already attending to us. It was after we got home from the hospital that night, where we went to see a friend's wife that put to bed and needed our attention, that the seriousness of the incident hit me. It is better imagined what that sort of officer was capable of doing if any of us in the car had made any move that seemed threatening to him in his state of mind at that time. |
Esseite:I agree with you cos even those that eventually make it to better environment with good governance, like Italy, USA, Canada etc, still indulge in all sorts of crime |
seemsnice:I was redirected to the 'Remita' site where I made the payment of N711 for the token. Looks legit to me |
Raphkriz:Checked online for a cousin just now and it wasn't responding after purchasing and inputting a token. Kept getting 'No CA3'. |
femi4:In the heat of the gun battle. someone calmly sat in one of the cars in the convoy, counting the nos of bandits. |
damiBJ:And are there no better ways of handling such cases instead of violence? We have become so used to violence in this country and have accepted it as a norm. What stopped the rating from impounding the car? |
ElsonMorali:Something is amiss. And because of the high level of cover up and deceit in our systems, this case, just like others, will be swept under the carpet. Human lives mean nothing any more in this country. We have become endangered species in our own land. |
Eziokwugbaoto:I'd say this is one of the most thought provoking comments I have read on the ongoing rape saga, so far. Thank you for this. I have two very young children and it would be heartrending if they are taken advantage of. |
