The saying that one will be addressed the way one dresses is absolutely true. The way will present our dogs to the public will say a lot about our kennel. Some people display dogs being transported to another city or state, and to other West African countries in baskets that can barely contain them. The travel baskets are ‘too big for comfort’, smiles. For example, if you transport an adult Great Dane in a travel container meant for an adult American Eskimo, is that not animal cruelty? If these pets could talk, they would have called you a murder or murderess. They would have rained curses on you for meting out to them inhumane treatment.

You will see people displaying dogs in a dirty environment. This they do not do in their closets, but they choose Facebook. Information posted on social media has no boundary. It is worldwide. The world is watching your activities and the kennel you want to promote on social media. You may be an ethical dog breeder, but poor presentation or handling of your dogs can portray you otherwise. What we do not say is what we will be judged on -our body language! If you are taking pictures of your dogs in a dirty environment, what are you telling the world?

It is pertinent to note that our dogs should enjoy their journey just like we do when we travel. Poor packaging can even kill the animals or traumatize them. Our dogs should travel in suitably sized Pet Travel Containers. Let us now move into how to size and make our travel crates.

Pet travel crates are usually made of plastic or wood. The main purpose of the crates are:

Safety of the animals
Comfortability
Safety to other animals and human during travelling
Easy handling

Like I said earlier, the container can either be made of wood or plastic,the onus is on you to verify the materials and specifications required from your Airline or transport company to guide you on which crate you need.

We will be looking into the basic dimensions required by most airline. These may be the minimum requirements by airline, but going above it is not harmful, it will only make the dogs more comfortable during the journey.

It is important you get the right size of container for your animal. Airlines are meticulous in ensuring that the animal has enough space to turn about normally while standing, to stand and sit erect, and to lie in a natural position in the crate or container. This is the reason why sizing of the travel crates is important; airline will accepted or refused your dog based on this.

Can you explain your comment please? Did you read it all? Also I saw your post on mating exotic dog breed with mutts. I will say that dogs are bred for different purposes and hence they have different temperaments. For example, if you mate a Caucasian to the free roaming dogs, the puppies cannot be Caucasian. Assuming you mate a Caucasian and rottweiler(both are exotic), you can not have puppies that are either Caucasian or rottweiler. You will only end up with mixed breed puppies.

Who says a sire cannot mate his daughter? A lot of people will criticize this if I post it in a group. The puppy millers and the marketers may keep mute because they are after selling puppies and make some dough for themselves, ethics is not their business. I have seen cases whereby people are trying to sell puppies that they claim to be of breeds they are not. I have seen where people frown when you mention that your dog is of known pedigree because their canines are of unknown pedigrees and they are also unethical breeders.
Some people usually say that pedigree is just the family tree of the dog. Yes, you are very right, but it is more than that in the real sense. If dog breeding is an art and a science, then you have to know what you plan to achieve with each breeding through art and science. Pedigree of a dog which is the lineage up to at least four generations will guide you to correct faults in your dogs and improve the overall health and conformation.
Now to the bone of contention, father to daughter mating, son to mother mating, siblings mating and so on are being frown at in animal breeding and husbandry. This is also supported by the holy books and various traditions that it is not good among human too and it is called incest. Kindly tell me if you do not engage in it after reading this little story below;

My name is Okafor Okeke, I was born a twin (the other was a female) on 6th June 1967, a month before the Nigerian civil war, in Onitsha, eastern Nigeria. I was told my mother and my late father how the war was tough and how we were lucky to survive the war. About a year into the civil war, our village was invaded by the Nigeria troop led by the then Brigadier Olusegun Obasanjo. It was a terrible night and my twin sister was strapped to my mother’s back while I was held on my father’s shoulder while he held a cutlass on the other. We made it out of the village alongside many villagers to a safe place. When we got to the safe place, my mother could not explain how my twin sister disappeared from her back. She cried her heart out and after sometime, life goes on.
• In 1987, I was admitted to the University of Ibadan to Study mechanical engineering. One evening, after 3 years of studentship at the university, I met a lady at the cafeteria. I was attracted to her beauty. I thought she was not a human being because of the extraordinary beauty I saw on display. She gave her name as Asake Olabusuyi, a student in the humanity faculty. We became friends which later blossom from platonic friendship to a love relationship despite our different ethnic background. We got married 5 years later in an elaborate wedding in Eruwa, Oyo State. We could not have babies for 2 years and we sought medical attention. In one of the tests, we needed to have DNA checked and they were found to have too much similarities. We both echoed in the doctor’s office, “how the hell will that be possible”. I am from the east and she is from the west. The doctor asked us to call both our parents. To cut the long story short, it was then that Colonel Patrick Olabusuyi(Rtd), my wife’s father said the he found my wife in the bush during operation to liberate our village sometime in 1967.I have been married to my twin sister all the while.
Let’s go back to our dog breeding now that you have read the story. The dog that you cannot trace its pedigree, how to you know that the father of your bitch is not the one mating her etc.? The pedigree of your dog will help you to plan your breeding. It will show you the combination you can select to improve on the offspring by directing you towards the direction to improve desired traits and eliminate the undesired traits n them. In conclusion, if your dog is of unknown pedigree, you cannot preach to anyone to mate a direct offspring back to the father or mother and so on. I have heard case whereby you buy dog from Mr. A and in some years later, he will deny the dog. When you are buying a dog of known pedigree, endeavor to get at least the kennel issued pedigree certificate if the club’s is not available yet.

Dogs are regarded as mammals, which means they have similar body structure with man. In human, women menstruate, and in bitches, they come on heat. During heat in dogs, we can use different methods to know when they ovulate. This ranges from laboratory test to do-it-at home tests just like in human. Also, there are many ways of detecting pregnancy in human being and dogs in the laboratory or hospital, and at home. I remember when underage girls are pregnant, once the mothers see them vomiting, they do physical examination to confirm if the girls are pregnant without consulting any doctor. Also at all the time, the mother’s examination and confirmation cannot be refuted by any medical test. The pale eyes, palms and heels could help our mothers to determine a woman that is pregnant even without the said woman being aware she is carrying a baby. Nausea, vomiting and other symptoms of early pregnancy are not being feigned by women. They are caused by hormonal changes.

Since bitch reproductive system is similar to that of human, there should be a way we can check our bitches, apart from palpation and relaxin test which has to do with blood sample, some days after mating just like our mothers do to their daughters if they suspect them to be in the family way. My question is, what are the changes in our bitches that confirm to us that they are pregnant within 2-3 weeks of mating? This question has been on my mind for years and I started observing my bitches to see what can change in their body during early pregnancy.
I have observed that their gums change around day 21 after mating. The gums become pale around 21 to 24 days after mating. The gums will not stay pale for long, just for a few days. All you need do is to be checking your bitch’s gum from about 15 days after mating to be accustomed to the colour of the gum as the colour of gum varies from bitch to bitch. By day 21, start observing the gum for deviation from the usual colour. The paleness in the gum is as a result of more blood concentrating in the uterus of the bitch for implantation of the fetus. The pictures were taken on day 20 and 23 after mating.
