PoliticsIgbo Needs A National Leader by eventsms(op): 4:00am On Feb 07, 2016
Obu Umunri palace at Nkwo Enugwu-Ukwu was filled to the brim. In attendance were the crème de la crème of the society. They include men of power and influence corporate titans, political juggernauts, business tycoons, educationists and religious top brass.

The occasion was the 58th Igu Aro of Enugwu-Ukwu in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State and the 5th of their monarch, His Majesty, Igwe Sir Ralph Obumnemeh Ekpeh; the Okpalanakana – Ukabia Nri IV.

The annual event, which paraded a weeklong list of activities before the actual Igu Aro day, afforded the people of the community the opportunity to assess the past year and bless the New Year; even as their prominent sons who have contributed to the growth and development of the town and the society at large are honoured with chieftaincy titles. The planning was coordinated by some members of the Igwe’s cabinet, including Chief Dennis Anekwe, Omenyi, the Traditional Prime Minister; Chief Clem Nwafor, Odu, the Deputy Traditional Prime Minister; Chief Frank Nwokike, Ugogbuzuo, the Cabinet Secretary; Chief Tony Okeke, Akalanri, the Defence Minister; Sen. Chief I.G. Abana, Ochikota, the Special Adviser on International Affairs; Chief Mike Nkwoji, Okpataozuora, the Special Adviser on Culture and Traditional Matters and Chief Hero Okoye, Udonri, the Treasurer.

First was the Mmanwu Festival, which was the display of the various masquerades from the 18 villages of Enugwu-Ukwu, and others from the visiting communities, and followed by the visit of the monarch to the town’s historical sites, namely: Obu Okpalanakana located at Uruekwo village, believed to be the ancestral home of Nri, the founder of Enugwu-Ukwu; and Mkpume Onyilienyi which is Nri’s shrine. Next was the 2nd Umunri Colloquium lecture series. At the occasion chaired by the Deputy Governor of Anambra State, Dr Nkem Okeke, the Nigeria’s former Minister of Power, Prof. Barth Nnaji spoke on the theme: Anyukoo Nwamili Onu: Sustainable Development of Ndi-Igbo in the 21st Century as the keynote speaker. The 2016 Igu Aro, organised in partnership with MTN Nigeria, saw many people winning prizes including microwave oven, standing fans and others from the telecommunication giant.

The Iguaro event started with presentation of kolanuts to the Igwe by the Otu Odueze, wives of cabinet members, led by Ocheze Lady Dorothy Ekpeh, the Igwe’s wife. The Igwe then poured libation and called on the spirit of Nri the father of Umunri Clan-Enugwu Ukwu, Nawfia, Enugwu Agidi and Agu Ukwu and many other towns with Umunri traits to come and bless his people and provide for them in the New Year.

The Igwe thanked God for blessing the community in the past year and prayed for bigger packages in the New Year. He specially appreciated the efforts of a prominent indigene of the town, Sir Chris Okoye, Obunakueze, a former President General of the town union, for attracting MTN Nigeria to co-sponsor the event.

The first class monarch also advised the apex Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndi-Igbo, to put her house in order and stop the “cacophony of disgrace they heap on us by their constant disagreements and altercations,” insisting: “A national leader for the Igbo is overdue. Igbo should install or recognize someone as our national leader who is to speak for us. The scenario where every Igbo sees himself as the mouth piece of the Igbo should stop. It breeds indiscipline and in the end, nothing is achieved.”

He expressed sadness over the continued subjugation of the Igbo by successive Federal Governments, saying: “The marginalization of Igbo people at the federal level must cease so that the nation under Buhari will know peace. If some states are not treated at par with others for the single reason that they did not vote for him, the way forward is to treat them well to enable them vote for him in the next election.” He requested Anambra State government to commence action on the construction of Enugwu Ukwu Bye-pass , to ease traffic on the old road.

Meanwhile, the Chairman, Igu Aro Commission, Chief Peter J.C. Nwokafor, noted that given the premium placed on the festival, his team left no stone unturned to ensuring that they had a smooth celebration.

Also speaking, the President-General, Enugwu-Ukwu Community Development Union, Chief (Barr) Mike Nkwocha, while raining encomiums on their traditional ruler, pointed out: “Igu Aro festival is very significant and dear to Enugwu-Ukwu kingdom.

It is during this period that the monarch rains blessings on his subjects and the land for productivity.”

In his speech, a member of the House of Representatives for Njikoka, Anaocha and Dunukofia federal constituency, Hon. Ferdinand Dozie Nwankwo, extolled the leadership qualities of their king.

A former National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Victor Umeh also eulogized the monarch for his “uprightness and trustworthiness.”

Highlights of the event include the conferment of chieftaincy titles on Chief (Dr) Chris Anayo Nworji, Chief (Dr) Francis Owoh, Chief Emma Okafor and Chief (Sir) Jude Ebelechukwu Ekpeh and their induction into the traditional cabinet of the community.

When interviewed, the media and PR consultant to the Igwe and cabinet, Mr. Sam Ekpe, observed that Enugwu Ukwu Iguaro is assuming more importance and attaining greater heights, having attracted the sponsorship of communication’s giant MTN. He stated that it is their expectation that the Federal Ministry of Culture and Tourism will eventually include Iguaro Enugwu Ukwu in the nation’s cultural calendar. On the conferment of Chieftaincy titles on non Enugwu Ukwu indigenes, he stated that it was in recognition of the awardees contribution to state and national development. For instance, he said Innocent Chukwuma of Innoson Group of Companies

PoliticsI’m The Only Legal Wife Of Ojukwu, Bianca Tells Court by eventsms(op): 9:35am On Feb 02, 2016
Lagos—The trial in the ongoing legal battle between the widow of the late Ikemba of Nnewi, Chukwuemeka Odimegwu Ojukwu, Bianca Ojukwu and his brothers over the family estate commenced yesterday before a Lagos state High Court sitting at Igbosere.
Bianca
Bianca

Mrs Ojukwu in her evidence in chief before Justice Abdulfattah Lawal, admitted that neither her nor her children are shareholders or directors in Ojukwu Transport Limited, OTL.

She also admitted that Ojukwu has eight children which includes the claimants, Afamefuna and Nwachukwu, adding that she is the only one that was legally married among Ojukwu’s wives, as she engaged in court, Church and traditional marriage.

Bianca, under cross examination also told the court that the suit that was filed before the court is only for the right of her children and not other children of Ojukwu.

The witness further informed the court that some of the OTL properties in question had been in the possession of her late husband before his demise, adding that the rent of those properties were being collected by her husband.

Mrs. Ojukwu had on behalf of her two under-aged children, Afamefuna and Nwachukwu (claimants) dragged Ojukwu Transport Limited, OTL, and seven others before a Lagos State High Court sitting in Igbosere over an alleged move by the family to eject her sons from the company’s properties located in Lagos.

She had asked the court to declare that her children are entitled to the possession and occupation of one of the properties known as No 29 Oyinkan Abayomi Street, Ikoyi Lagos until the harmonisation of the management and administration of the assets of the first defendant, OTL.

The defendants in the suit are: Prof Joseph Ojukwu, Engr. Emmanuel Ojukwu; Lotanna Putalora Ojukwu; Dr Patrick Ojukwu; Arch. Edward Ojukwu; Lota Akajiora Ojukwu and Mrs Massey Udegbe (doing business under Massey Udegbe & Company).

In the suit, Bianca, and her two children, had in their statement of claim, prayed the court to declare that the threat of forceful ejection from 29 Oyinkan Abayomi Street by the defendants is illegal.

She is also asking the court for a declaration that her children are entitled to possess the following property, namely: No. 13 Hawksworth Road, Ikoyi (now known as No. 13 Ojora Road; No. 32A Commercial Avenue, Yaba, Lagos; No. 30 Gerard Road, Ikoyi, Lagos and No. 30 McPherson Avenue, Ikoyi.

According to her, the properties were under the possession of late Chukwuemeka Odimegwu Ojukwu, the father of the claimants from the time the properties were released from government acquisition till date.

The claimants stated that throughout the period their father was struggling to retrieve the properties from the government, the second to seventh defendants “never played any role in the struggle nor contributed financially or otherwise to the realisation of the struggle.”

However, the judge adjourned the matter till today, for continuation of cross examination of Bianca.

In the letter dated January 22, 2016, Chief Clark specifically asked President Buhari to investigate the humiliation of Chief Government Ekpemupolo (Tompolo), the proposed scrapping of the Maritime University in Okerenkoko, Warri South West Local Government, Delta State established by former President Goodluck Jonathan and refund of the money already released for the project as disclosed by the Minister of Transportation, Chiibuike Rotimi Amaechi when he appeared before Senate Committee on Marine Transport, headed by Senator Ahmed Sani.

He said, “I totally condemn the vandalisation of oil and gas pipelines and will give you 100 per cent support for whatever action you take to bring the culprits to book. It is with heavy heart that I decided to take record of pipeline vandalisations that have taken place within the last two years.”

PoliticsBiafra’s Dead, Obasanjo Insists by eventsms(op): 9:46am On Jan 16, 2016
As the protagonists of Biafra intensify efforts for the realisation of their secession agenda, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, yesterday, described the move as a dead agitation borne out of sheer ignorance and error of judgment. The former President said those involved in the current agitation for Biafra were embarking on hopeless and futile exercise, which no serious-minded Nigerian should engage in.

Obasanjo who spoke in Abuja during a roundtable discussion organized by Nextier Advisory, a public sector advisory firm spearheaded by Patrick O. Okigbo III, with the theme: “Nigeria and the Biafra Agitation”. The ex-president asked leaders from the South-East geopolitical zone to call the protesters to order as such action would not do them any good. He said only those who did not experience the Nigerian civil war would embark on such a malevolent exercise.

He refused to blame the Igbo for not voting for President Buhari in the last election but urged him to prove that Nigeria was his constituency by acting like God who gives rain to the good and the bad. Obasanjo said: “No right-thinking person who has experienced the horror of war will ever agitate for more wars. Most wars stem from real and perceived injustices and dissatisfaction and invariably wars emanate from a desire to correct or redress such situations.

“Our civil war wasn’t any different. But at the end, almost all wars, jaw-jaw takes over from boom and devastation of the gun. That is the path of wisdom, prudence and political sagacity. If the elders abdicate their responsibility to the immaturity, inadequate experience, unrealistic idealism and the frustration of the young, it will no doubt lead to disaster.

PoliticsWe Won’t Release Metuh, Until He Returns N400m — EFCC by eventsms(op): 6:25am On Jan 12, 2016
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has said that the continued detention of the spokesperson of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, is due to his unwillingness to admit and return the ‘over N400 million’ he allegedly received from embattled former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki.

Ibrahim Magu, the Acting Chairman of the EFCC, denied claims it was on a witchhunt of leaders of the opposition PDP after its continued detention of Metuh and release of Jafaru Isa, an All Progressives Congress chieftain.

Magu claimed that Mr. Isa had begun the process of refunding the money in his possession, Mr. Metuh had refused to do same.
EFCC boss, Ibrahim Magu

EFCC boss, Ibrahim Magu

‎”From the records, Metuh got over N400 million, he has not said anything because we need the public money to be returned so that it’s going to be used for public good,” Mr. Magu said during a meeting with online media publishers in Lagos.

“Also Jafaru Isa, what Dasuki gave him was N170 million. He also agreed…of course he has collected that money, he was with us for 4-5 days and then he made a deposit of N100 million and entered an undertaking to bring the rest. That does not mean we will not prosecute him.”

“But this other Metuh, instead of going for a refund, he has admitted he collected money…. so instead of… he still has the money because the money is too much. Instead of returning the money, he preferred to go on strike.”‎

Mr. Isa, a former military governor of Kaduna State, was arrested last Wednesday by EFCC operatives for allegedly receiving N170 million from the Dasuki.
Mr. Metuh, the Spokesperson of the PDP, has been in EFCC custody since January 5‎.

The EFCC boss insisted the Commission is not selective in its anti-corruption war‎, noting that only people involved in “some certain action or inaction of corruption” are being invited for questioning.

“Nobody who is not corrupt, who is not involved, is with us,” he said.

Former Governor of Ogun State, Aremo Olusegun Segun Osoba, in this chat, shares his thoughts on the state of nation, where we missed the mark and the way forward.

By Leke Adeseri, South-West Regional Editor

In 1960, this nation had a promising future but along the line something happened, where will you say we missed it as a country?
Nigeria’s problems started when the leaders of the First Republic started going after one another. The issue of Foster-Sutton Tribunal against Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe over the African Continental Bank, ACB and other issues. Then the deliberate attempt to malign Chief Obafemi Awolowo through the Coker inquiry was the beginning of the instability of the country.

What do you think we’re doing wrongly today?
We’re repeating history, today politicians seem to be going for each other’s jugular. When I look back, I remember all that happened even up to the series of commissions of inquiry set up by the military after the 1966 coup. As a young reporter, I covered these inquiries. Nigeria has not yet learned any lesson, the corruption that we have been talking about since independence is still the monster that is destroying everything in Nigeria.

What is the immediate solution?
Corruption can never be wiped out in the world, there’s no where in the world that you’ll say corruption has been wiped out. Vladimir Putin in Russia has been fighting against corruption even our neighbour Ghana, they executed all the leaders believing that is the solution for Ghana but they are still battling with the problem today. The thing is that we can only contain or manage it but it can’t easily be wiped out.

How will you rate the current attempt at tackling corruption?
Rating is too early, it’s like when people get over-excited about 100 days. I always wonder, what is the meaning of 100 days? A man who’s going on a marathon race, you can’t assess him on the first 100 yard dash of the race, that is a pre-emptive judgement. You can’t assess a government within the first 100 days.

On the corruption, the President Buhari has made that a major and cardinal policy of his government. What I noticed is that his image and past record as a leader have had an effect. What I noticed now is that there is Sanitization of the system within the period that he came in. the system has been adjusting itself to work on its own to block some holes.

His body language is rubbing in on people, corrupt elements are beginning to fear that they needed to be careful. When he and late Brigadier General Babatunde Idiagbon started, War Against Indiscipline was the slogan and suddenly, Nigeria imbibed it and everywhere people did not just key-in, indiscipline became a national problem.

The assessment I can give is that reasonable sanitization of the system, discipline, the Treasury Single Account, if well managed will have tremendous effect but not to the point of denying the role of the banks in the management of the economic system.

Until the team of ministers are appointed, nobody should want to assess the long term impression of the government. What we have now is the manager, the coach, we haven’t assembled the team to be able to say this is the winning team. We have to assemble the totality of the team, then we can assess and put in some assumption of what we think of the team. We already have a good manager or captain but we need good players in Nigeria.
Olusegun Osoba

Olusegun Osoba

The President’s detractors say he’s waging the anti-graft war against his political opponents
Who are these political opponents or presumed political opponents? I only cautioned myself when I was in government not to get used to what I cannot afford when I’m out of government; not to misuse public funds; to spend public funds the way I’ll spend my own money.

This is my philosophy. Anybody that has been in government must be ready to answer questions after office on how he managed the affairs of the government. If you have been sincere then there’s no need to worry but one thing that is worrisome to me now is that we, the media are becoming a tool in the hands of the contending forces for political space in Nigeria. It is a saddening situation, the way we are going about our current situation.

It is often said that if you’re a governor for one day, there is no way your tenure will be looked into and something would not be found

Yes. There was a former president that used to give a Yoruba proverb that nobody is totally clean in the backside. That is Yoruba people’s belief that everybody’s backside smells. I agree but what I’m saying about the media is that we usually hear a story without investigation. We just blast it and make it look as capital offence immediately. We are being used to conduct trial of people on the pages on of newspapers. If an allegation is made against me, shouldn’t somebody find out my own side of the story? A lot of people that I know who had been touted as ministers, the way the media is portraying them is as if they’re all corrupt is bad. What evidence have we as media, of the allegation we are making about these characters? You say the Directorate of State Services, DSS, has reports. Fine! We as journalists owe a duty before we go to press to find out if the man we’re talking about has been called by the DSS, if they have given their own story to explain the allegations being made. We the media have killed investigative journalism, we have killed initiative, we just publish raw and this is disturbing. At the end of the day, what is our business without analysis, without any factual information? We just say somebody has been nominated, found by the security agencies to be corrupt, another person has been dropped. Many of these names are not even on the list of President Buhari’s prospective ministers. We have destroyed many to an extent by tainting their names and consequently their future. I must confess that as a journalist, I’ve been a victim and I’ve committed this kind of thing before.

How?
It was the case of Professor Oritsejolomi Thomas, the then Vice Chancellor of University of Ibadan. He was a trustee of Asaboro’s Estate. He was taken to court as a trustee over the estate and judgement was in the first instance given against the trustee, not against Oritsejolomi Thomas as a person.

Our correspondent in Akure, where the case took place, got compromised, the lawyer for the other side, about three months after, instigated him to write the story of a court judgement given three months earlier. It got to our desk, we thought it was a fresh story, we went ahead to use the story and that led to massive demonstration in the University of Ibadan and led to the removal of an innocent, decent, respected Nigerian – Oritsejolomi Thomas from the University of Ibadan as Vice Chancellor.

On the higher level, the case was over turned, the innocence of Oritsejolomi Thomas was established but he couldn’t be reinstated. By then we had fallen into the hands of a corrupt reporter to end the career of an amicable Nigerian in the calibre of Oritsejolomi Thomas. That’s why I say the way we’re conducting ourselves in the media is bad. Government must not rely on the headlines especially in this era of Internet journalism to destroy innocent Nigerians who perhaps have not had the chance to know the records that they have about them to react to those records whether they are right or wrong.

What are your thoughts about Nigeria at 55?
Trying times, but we shall survive. I have observed and seen Nigeria go through more terrible and worrisome things but we have survived.
Whatever level we may be, we will recover. Was there not a time when Harold Wilson had to devalue the Pound Sterling? Did the British not get to the level, are they not back? And the Pound now is a very strong currency. A nation will always survive, it is leadership.

I’m worried, bothered and unhappy but I’m optimistic.

You reacted to former President Obasanjo’s insinuation that Awolowo was appointed as Yoruba leader by his followers.
There has never been another Yoruba man of the calibre of Awolowo so far. Awolowo laboured very hard, right from the time he was a student in UK to bring the Yoruba together, he worked hard for it, he earned it, he was never accepted by the entire Yoruba. For a long time, he never won elections in the urban centres, Lagos, Abeokuta, Ilesha, Ibadan, all the urban centres. He was winning in the rural areas to offset the result of the urban centres.

Over time, the best election where he got the entire Yoruba behind him was in 1963. I was involved. In that presidential election, he had total, massive support of the Yoruba race behind him.

For the election of August 12, 1966; I was present there, the intention of that meeting was not to elect a leader, the intention was to unite all the forces within Yoruba land, it was the first time that Chief Mike Odu who was administrator in South West will be meeting Awolowo for the first time. Awolowo had just come out of prison. People like TOS Benson, Aderogun, it was their first time of sitting with Awolowo, it was a mere meeting of uniting Yoruba leaders and the man who organized it is still alive, that is why I still say that investigative journalism should be pursued vigorously. General Adeyinka Adebayo is still alive. I said Obasanjo was also involved as Garrison Commander in Ibadan then, I put all the facts before the whole world. It is not meant to be a war between me and Obasanjo, I just wanted to correct the fact that Awolowo was spontaneously and unanimously; the emphasis on spontaneity and unanimity- he was spontaneously and unanimously, without single dissent, adopted as the leader of the Yoruba. If anyone says otherwise, I will produce more records because the then Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Olufunwa, one of the best police officers this country has ever produced, was the father of a classmate of mine and I was staying with him as a CP who was also a member of the cabinet of General Adebayo. So through him I knew a lot, I knew too much so if anyone puts his hand in my mouth, I’ll reveal more, more educative information.

I was very close to late Papa Emmanuel Olufunwa, he served in Oshogbo where my father lived, the son and I were classmates in Methodist Boys High School – Folarin Olufunwa. His family and my family were like one family. General Adebayo will confirm the character of CP Olufunwa.
Please note, I’m not a young man, I’m 76, people don’t know I know a lot about Nigerian history, a lot of situation in Nigeria.
That is why in South-West I’m a sad man. We are the only group who because we’re looking for offices in President Buhari’s government, are resorting to what Yoruba people say; “If you can catch him kill him; if you cannot get to kill him, demobilise him.”

We are at each other’s jugular raising irrelevances about ourselves, destroying ourselves before President Buhari. Have you heard such about other people in other parts of the country? It is unfortunate, we should go back to Ogunde’s “Yoruba ronu” let’s put our thinking caps on. Enough of self destruction.

PoliticsIt’s Time To Carve Out Biafra From Nigeria by eventsms(op): 5:56am On Sep 30, 2015
Leader of the Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, yesterday, gave what he termed as genuine reasons the United Nations should allow Biafra to be separated from Nigeria.

One of the reasons, he stated, was that the population of the former Eastern state, now South East and part of South South that make up Biafra land can currently boast of over 10 million people, adding that the Biafran people naturally do not share similar culture and tradition with Hausa-Fulani of the North and Yoruba of the South West as to continue to remain together under one country called Nigeria.
Uwazuruike

Uwazuruike

According to Uwazuruike, another reason was that MASSOB, as a separatist group, had all it takes to run a sovereign state of Biafra, having had enough instruments, structures, flag, currency, coat of arms and defence to assume a status of an existing government.

Uwazuruike, who spoke to newsmen, yesterday in Onitsha, Anambra State, through MASSOB’s Deputy National Director of Information, Mazi Chris Mocha, ahead of the on-going UN General Assembly, renewed his call on the world body to accord a recognition to Biafra as a sovereign state, just as it did to South Sudan which had been accorded a sovereign status since July 9, 2011.

He recalled that US had classified Nigeria, Somalia, Ethiopia and Sudan as failed states which needed to be divided between 2011 and 2015, adding that it was only from Sudan that South Sudan was carved out on July 9, 2011, remaining Nigeria, Ethiopia and Somalia.

He cited examples of carving out of East-Timor with only a population of about 821,000 from Indonesia on May 22, 2002; carving out of Serbia with a population of about 10 million from Montenegro on July 2006; carving out of South Ossertia from Georgia and carving out of Kosovo from Serbia on February 17, 2008.

He, therefore, urged UN to grant the sovereignty of Biafra to save the people from further annihilation in Nigeria since there was no basis whatsoever for Biafra people’s continued stay with Nigeria, adding, “Nigeria cannot make any appreciable economic progress until Biafra is allowed to go, particularly now that Lord Fredrick Luggard’s amalgamation of 1914 has since January 1, 2014, expired after 100 years of the amalgamation.”

He wondered why the UN had not been proactive in tackling the knotty problems of the oppressed in Nigeria and asked rhetorically: “is UN waiting till things degenerate into full blown war again or to continue as genocide before they will act?”

PoliticsBattle For Enugu-east Senatorial Zone by eventsms(op): 6:02am On Sep 29, 2015
The National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Enugu, headed by Justice M.O Adewara yesterday, adjourned for judgment,on the petition brought before it by former governor Chimaroke Nnamani, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Change,PDC,for the Enugu-East senatorial district election, conducted last March 28.

Nnamani is challenging the declaration by the Independent National Election Commission,INEC,of Senator Gil Nnaji,of the Peoples Democratic Party,PDP,as winner at the poll.

The declaration by INEC had elicited protest from supporters of Nnamani in Enugu metropolis.

While adopting his final written address,Counsel to Nnamani, Mr. O. Jolaawo told the court that,”two issues are distilled at page 3 of our address. We adopt the said address in its entirety and urge the court to grant the prayers sought in this petition per page 18 of our petition.

“The sustenance of grounds one and two or any of them or even of the second part of ground two thereof which is disjunctive is enough for your lordships to grant, at the very least, the relief of nullification.

“Respondents are making heavy weather of the fact that we did not bring evidence of place where we won the election or where INEC declared us as winner. This argument is extremely disconcerting and incredulous. The purpose of a petition is to challenge our loss at the election. Paragraph 15 of the first schedule to the Electoral Act also supports our position.

“Petitioner was able to prove through the respondents, witnesses, RW1 to RW7, that substantial irregularities occurred in Isi-Uzo through RW1, through RW2 for Nkanu East, RW3 cross examination for Enugu South. RW4 was senatorial collation but under cross examination, gave evidence with respect to Enugu East and presidential election irregularities vis a vis senatorial accreditation. RW5 conceded to numerous and substantial irregularities and non-compliance with the electoral act in Isi-Uzo where she served as Electoral Officer.

“Also RW6 did so too with respect to Nkanu East, which substantially affected the results of the election and RW7 also did same for Enugu North.” FREE BULK SMS WEBSITE www.eventsms.com.ng
PoliticsThe Move For Aviation National Carrier by eventsms(op): 5:47am On Sep 29, 2015
PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari’s interest in establishing a new aviation national carrier became evident when, early in August 2015, he directed visiting top ministry of aviation officials led by the Permanent Secretary, Hajiya Binta Bello, to take steps towards actualising the project which was strongly recommended by the Ahmed Joda transition committee.

Proponents of a new national carrier play up the benefits, which include national pride and the opportunities it will afford Nigeria to enjoy the fuller benefits of the Bilateral Aviation Services Agreements (BASA).

Nigeria has made several attempts at owning national carriers but came out with our fingers burnt. The first was the ugly experiences of operating the defunct Nigerian Airways between 1958 and 2005. This exposed the crass inability of government employees to run businesses, especially airlines. The federal government sank billions of dollars in acquiring planes of all types. At a point, the Nigerian Airways could boast of dozens of aircraft plying most important routes at home and internationally but by 2005 the Airways had to be liquidated.

A second attempt involved a government partnership with Virgin Atlantic owned by British billionaire, Richard Branson. The Virgin Nigeria that resulted from that effort soon collapsed. There were other attempts to float national carriers known variously as “Air Nigeria” and “Nigerian Global”. The nation only spent huge resources and yet nothing came of the effort.

Beyond national pride and providing a lucrative avenue to provide jobs and political patronage to highly connected individuals, what grand national agenda does Nigeria truly intend to achieve? To get the credible answer to this question the federal government must consult not just professionals and civil servants in the sector. The airline owners should also be brought on board so that if the national carrier is eventually floated, the interests of all parties will be protected for the overall good of the nation.

We are calling for a pause to ponder on this policy move. It looks very much like another white elephant project. Nigeria is not financially in shape to cough out the $5 billion, which experts believe, is the least amount it will take to float a new national carrier. Besides, the defunct Nigerian Airways owed heavily to international creditors, who are waiting to collect their money as soon as government goes into another aviation venture.

We call on the Federal Government to focus more energy on ensuring that existing airlines operate in a more conducive environment devoid of multiple taxation, expensive aviation fuel and the lot. We should rather empower our indigenous airlines to grow to a point where we can comfortably promote the viable ones among them to emerge as national carriers.
