House of Representatives Committee on Federal Character Engages DSS and NIHOTOUR on Recruitment Procedures and Adherence to Federal Character Principles The House of Representatives Committee on Federal Character, chaired by the Deputy Speaker of the 9th House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Ahmed Idris Wase, today held an interface with the Department of State Services (DSS) and the National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism (NIHOTOUR). The meeting was convened to address critical issues surrounding their recruitment processes and the application of the Federal Character principles in the conduct of their operations. While addressing the representatives of the DSS, Rt. Hon. Wase commended the agency for its unwavering commitment to national security and the discharge of its constitutional duties. However, he emphasized the need for the agency to ensure inclusivity in its recruitment exercises and operations in accordance with the Federal Character provisions of the Nigerian Constitution. This, he noted, is essential for fostering national unity, inclusivity, and loyalty among all Nigerians. Furthermore, the Chairman issued a stern reminder to heads of government agencies who were invited to appear before the Committee but failed to do so without justification. He reiterated that the Committee, as a constitutional body, will not hesitate to invoke the full extent of its powers as enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution to enforce compliance and ensure accountability in the discharge of public duties. The agencies currently in default include, but are not limited to: 1. University of Abuja Teaching Hospital 2. University of Benin Teaching Hospital 3. Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital 4. University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital 5. Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital 6. University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital 7. National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons 8. National Intelligence Agency The Committee hereby issues a final warning to these institutions: failure to honour future invitations will attract appropriate legislative sanctions, as the House will not condone disregard for constitutional oversight functions. Heads of agencies are reminded that compliance with the directives of the National Assembly is not optional but a statutory obligation that must be respected in the interest of good governance and national cohesion.
