GOBIR FOUNDATION UPGRADES MICRO-CREDIT SCHEME, ONE YEAR AFTER COMMENCEMENT. The Gobir Organization Foundation has upgraded its micro credit scheme. The Foundation has introduced a community cooperative loan system for women in Kwara State, in order to streamline lending procedure and encourage intra group development & cohesion among beneficiaries. It should be recalled that the Foundation set aside 250 million Naira for the micro credit loan project and started disbursement of the interest-free & collateral-free loans to individual women in Kwara State in September 2019. The project which started with 500 women, has since captured over 20,000 women in Kwara State in the last one year. Most of the beneficiaries have lauded the scheme and affirmed that the loans contributed immensely to their businesses and have provided a cushion against the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on their businesses. In a bid to make the programme more impactful and sustainable, the Gobir Organization Foundation has improved on the scheme and relaunched it as a community cooperative loan, which will run in cycles starting from N10,000 to N50,000 per beneficiary. Furthermore, the scheme has been enriched through the introduction of a savings scheme to encourage savings culture for self-reliance. This gives beneficiaries the opportunity to save as they repay their loans, similar to the local savings system popularly known as 'Ajo'. The Foundation is confident that this new phase of the empowerment programme would bring more relief and benefit to all beneficiaries and encourage intra-group development, solidarity and entrench a savings habit among beneficiaries. The Foundation has announced that registration of intending beneficiaries has commenced, and interested new and already existing community cooperative groups or trade associations can reach out to the Foundation's desk on 09081249929 or visit www.gobir.org. |

Three months after my wife had just given birth to our fourth child, she told me about her desire to further her education. She told me she wanted to go back to the university and obtain a masters in regional planing. I didn't even bother to look at her. I took it as one of her numerous Jokes. Why would she be thinking such a kind of thing at this moment in our lives? I had already set up a provision shop for her. My wife was not lacking anything at all. I was already working and earning good salary, enough to take care of both her, and my children. Why then will she choose to go back to school, when most Nigerian graduates are regretting why they spent years schooling, instead of learning a handwork or trade? Who did she plan living our four kids for? My first daughter was just six years old, and my second daughter was four years. Chinwe my third daughter just clocked two years. And the last child was still a three month old toddler. All these children needed time, attention and the best care and love they could get. They needed to be taken care off. I was a very busy man who went to work 7am, and returned 7pm everyday. How did we expect to manage? I kept my eyes fixed on the T.V set, and did not say a word to her. For all I could tell, my wife was loosing it and had gone crazy. "Frank, I am talking to you na. I can't continue like this. I need to further and gain a masters, so I can get a good job that pays well." "I am not stopping you from getting your masters, or even going further to obtain a Phd." I threw angrily at her. "I am not. I know the importance of schooling just as you do. I am not an illiterate. But my question now is, in whose hands do you plan to leave our four children in?" "We would hire a maid who will stand in for me until I come back." She retorted. I turned to look at her - hot anger boiling up in me. I would have swallowed back my anger and pretended she never said those words, and we would be just fine. But then she went on…. "Or we could invite your mother to come stay with us. Mama could help us look after the…." "Will you shut that gutter you call a mouth." I shouted, cutting her short. "What nonsense." I thundered angrily. "Invite my mother at her age to look and nurse kids she didn't bring out of her womb? Was I nursed by her grandmother? What sought of insult is that? You want to turn my mother into a nanny, because of you intend to pursue you so called ambition? Are you mad? Are you loosing it?" "Okay fine, we would invite my mother then, I am sure my mother will be very happy and ever willing to come take care of my children until I am back from school." I buried myself in deep thoughts. Speechless and silent. "Frank please. I know this is a wrong time to do this. But if I don't do this now, I do not think I will be able to do it again. I am not getting any younger. I do not even know if I will end up being pregnant again. All I need now is your support. You promised to support me." She said. "You must be mad." I blurted angrily. I stood up from the cushion and walked angrily to my room. I laid on my bed to mull over what she had said. This exact incidence reminded me of my own mother who wanted furthering her education too. By then I was fifteen years old with three younger sisters. My dad was a business man - a no nonsense man whose wife and children were afraid to approach. We dared not anger him, or even argue with him. His yes was yes, and no was his no. Just like every other young growing child, my mother had dreams too. She wanted to be a doctor. She had married my father after completing her National diploma in the polytechnic. Even though she told me that she was left with no other option than to marry, considering the fact that her father was a retiree, and had other children to cater for with his pension. My mother had to step aside for her younger once, hence she had gone to school, and had tasted the four corners of a higher institution. Her own mother, who understood the desires of my mother to study, advised my mother to get married. She encouraged my mother that my father will sponsor her when the time is right. My father helped assure my mother, that he was going to sponsor her till she graduated, if only she married him. My mother ended up in marriage. Months later she bore her first child which was me, the second, and third, before reminding my father about his promise to sponsor her through school. My father thundered angrily at her. He told her he was struggling to pay my school fees, and my sisters school fees. He was also struggling to put food on the table and pay bills. He told her that she was not supporting him in anyway, and all she cares about is going back to school. He warned her never to mention such stupid ambitions to him again. He told her if she had her money she could go. He was not stopping her. Since we were grown up and could look after each other. Well that ended the topic about my mother's education in our house. She never went back to school again, because she didn't have money to sponsor herself. My father on his part was not supportive. Several night I will wake up to urinate and will find my mother in the parlour crying bitterly. She told me the dreams she had as a young girl. She told me how marriage had shattered those dreams and turned her into a common house wife. One night while she was crying in the parlour, I came to sit with her and she held me and advised me. "Frank, when you get married to your wife, support her. Support her dreams. Support her visions. She is only a woman who needs a man by her side. She is also a human being who has dreams like you. You should always have it in mind that at a point in her life, she dreamt of being a successful woman too. Will you like to see your sisters become illiterates and unfulfilled in there husbands house?" "No ma." I replied. "Then don't make another woman unfulfilled. Don't make another man's sister just a house wife. Even if you do not have the finances to support her, show her you care. Find ways to encourage her. Only your encouragement alone will give her comfort. Even when she fails to accomplish her dreams, she will know she gave it a try and failed. Her failure will not hurt her much, because you were there for her all through the way." My wife's approaching footsteps, jolted me out of my reverie. She laid quietly on the bed, sad and feeling depressed. "You can go back to school. Talk with mama or your mother to come stay with us for sometime. I do not want a house help looking after my children. But you must still ensure to look after my kids, and put an eagle eye on their daily activities. Especially Nonye. She is still a toddler and doesn't needs stress. I will transfer some money to you to begin your registration." My wife couldn't understand why I had suddenly changed my mind. She had known me to be one who would not easily give in to things. But only I understood why I had done what I did. Years later, my wife obtained not only her masters, but her Phd. It was not easy but I supported her all the way. She got a Job at a company that pays well, and now helps to support the home. Most times when I hear my wife tell me "don't worry I will handle the bills." You don't need to spend your cash let me do this." I get overwhelmed with Joy. I can proudly beat my chest and say to my friends, my wife you see today, is the product of what I chose to make her be. I am proud of my woman, and she is proud to call me her husband. Every man is farmer, and every wife is a piece of land. You can either choose to cultivate your land into what you want her to be, or what you want her to produce. If you cultivate groundnuts, you will reap groundnuts. If you cultivate grasses, you will reap grasses. Do not blame your wife for being what she is, and compare her to other successful women out there. Blame yourself for being a poor farmer, who failed to cultivate and nurture your crop. You have a choice to either be a good farmer, or a bad one. |

GOBIR TRANSFORMS OKESUNA PRIMARY SCHOOL Okesuna primary school, Ilorin was founded in 1915, a year after the amalgamation of Nigeria, and has produced several eminent personalities including the 9th Emir of Ilorin Alhaji Zulukarnaini Gambari. Barely three months after the adoption of the school by the Gobir Organization Foundation, the first phase of the renovation of the school has been completed. The first phase included provision of pipeborn water for the school and the surrounding community. All the classrooms have been furnished to the highest standard. In the past, students sat on the floor to receive tuition. Often, up to three classes were combined in one classroom. This made it difficult for children to learn. Some students that are enterprising come to school with hammers and nails to repair tables and chairs for their personal use. A bore hole has been sunk, and water reticulated to different parts of the school. New toilets have also been constructed, putting an end to open defecation, which was the norm. The entire school premises has been fenced and barbed wire installed to ensure security. Okesuna Primary School is located at a popular meeting point for violent gang members. Finally, the whole school including all the classrooms have been renovated and painted. The next phase of renovation will include provision of a befitting playground, gardens and other recreational facilities. The school library and ICT center will be reconstructed and fully equipped. The school will also be provided with solar power, which will reduce reliance on the erratic power supply. Reacting to the work done in the school, the Education Secretary of Ilorin East Local Government, Alhaji Abdulmalik Soliu applauded this giant stride by Waziri Yakubu Gobir and his Foundation. He described it as laudable and unprecedented in the community. The chairman of Okesuna Community Development Association, Alhaji Usman Okesuna also commended Waziri Gobir for delivering on his promise within such a short period.

GET INVOLVED IN POLITICS OR KEEP QUIET! Politics is the only process to national development, if you stay out of it, you are far away from the reality that leads to development. The cost of gari is determined by politics, the school fee, the motor parts and even your salaries are all determined by what happens in politics. When the wrong people are in power and the right people are protesting, analysing, criticising and complaining, the status quo remains the same until the right people get involved. Anyone who feels too pure or clean to get involved in the game of politics, he or she should feel ashamed of complaining about bad governance. When the good people stay away from politics, only the bad people are left to run the affairs of the nation. Politics is a game, though may be dirty when played by dirty people. However, it could also be cleansed to be clean, when played by good people. Get involved |

N-POWER: 5 THINGS BENEFICIARIES SHOULD EXPECT IN THE MONTH OF MAY: The month of May is a promising month; it holds great tidings and expectations to beneficiaries of the npower program, despite covid-19 pandemic, the month of May would see drastic reduction of the pandemic There are five (5) things beneficiaries should look up to in the month May. However, some may not materialized immediately, but in the nearest future, may put smile in the faces of all beneficiaries PAYMENT OF APRIL STIPENDS Payment of April’s Stipend will commence in the Month of May (Early May), the Federal Government has made concerted effort in making sure all salaries and stipend of workers are paid immediately without delay Though the minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouq told beneficiaries of the programme to expect delay in payment each month, she has been cautioned against that statement by the presidency To this end, the president has given directive for prompt payment of salaries and other benefits to her workers. MAY-------EVE OF BATCH As EXIT By June, Batch A would have been moved into what the minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouq called Permanency The month of May might see a lot of talks on Npower permanency in both the Executive and Legislators. Due to the covid-19 pandemic, the Lawmakers were not able to seat and deliberate on Npower permanency Move Before now, there are many lawmakers in support of the bill to permanent volunteers, May promised to fulfill this break-through The move for permanency of n-power volunteers will come into lime light, the matter will be discussed at the various houses, and our fate clearly lies with the outcome of this discussion. Many of our senators and house of reps members representing us may not be aware of the situation at hand; it is our duty to remind them, we call on all beneficiaries to follow on, you can contact your reps and senator for total support of permanency of beneficiaries Since we cannot walk to the Senate or House of Reps to decide our fate, we can only pray and hope, as the matter is behold our strength A member of the Red chamber once raised the matter of permanency at the floor of the 9th senate, and not few weeks ago, a rep member did same in the house of representative. What we fail to do as volunteers is to boast the moral of these senators and reps, by actively showing them how serious and concerned we are with this issue, whatever happened, will determine our fate N-POWER DEVICE SELECTION- NO HOPE YET The programme promised devices as working tools for beneficiaries, but these devices have not reached the hands of beneficiaries, especially Batch B beneficiaries Some Batch A beneficiaries have not received their also, the matter had since been tabled for discussion long after Hajiya Sadiya Umar Farouq, the Minister of Humanitarian Affai |
