2. Canada. *. Size: 9, 984, 000 square kilometers. *. Population: 35.16 million (2013). *. Knowledge of English: 85%. Canada’s 9.984 million square kilometers make it the largest country in the western hemisphere, and its 202,080 kilometer coastline means that it has a longer shoreline than any other nation. First we explore the ten largest countries, when 11.5 percent of all the land in the entire world is claimed by just one country, it’s not surprising to learn that the 10th largest country(Algeria) could fit into the largest(Russia) seven times over. When all 10 of the world's largest countries are taken together, they total 49% of the earth's entire 149 million square kilometres of land. Russia. *. Size: 17, 100, 000 square kilometres. *. Population: 143.5 million (2013). *. English Knowledge: 5%. Russia’s 17.1 million square kilometres easily make it the world’s largest by area. If Russia were to lop off 7 million square kilometers, it would still be the largest and the lopped-off section would rank seventh overall, Russia borders 14 different countries.

111. Being on the ground does not equal safety. The deadliest accidents in airplane history actually occurred prior to takeoff. A deadly combination of fog and mixed radio signals from the flight deck caused two planes, carrying over 600 passengers between them, to collide head-on in the middle of a runway in the infamous Tenerife Accident. Over 500 passengers died as a result of this crash.(1977).

110. The smoothest place to sit on a plane is over or near the wing. Seats towards the back will be the bumpiest place but safer when we talk about crashing.

Missy89:Planes fly themselves now, but takeoff and landing, not yet. Takeoffs are the most critical phase of flight on large aircraft. Lots of things can happen during takeoff/landing which autopilot might not be able to handle like taxi from the gate on a narrow, curverd way to tje runway base to lineup for takeoff(autopilot dont have the eyes and sense), changing weather or wind, short or limited runway left, emergencies, and i also learnt that sensors to help the aircraft avoid other aircraft, obstacles, birds haven't been fully developed and tested. There are a lot of planes in close proximity on the ground, plus numbera duty vehicles like (fire trucks, fuel trucks, de-icers, cargo trucks) Steering around all of those would be quite difficult. dominique |
170 broken mirrors, each one representing one passenger, line the memorial’s circumference, and a plaque with each of the victims’ names was affixed to the upright wing.
|
Hundreds of dark rocks were trucked in from up to 70 miles away and laid out in the shape of a DC-10 inside a compass. The memorial is visible on Google Maps. Although the plane crash marks a dark moment in history, this heartwarming memorial to the victims restores our faith in humanity.

109. The least accessible memorial in the world, built to remember 170 people who died when a plane blew up over the Sahara desert in 1989, can be seen on Google Earth and Google Maps. UTA Flight 772 was flying from Brazzaville in the Republic of Congo to Paris CDG Airport in France on September 19, 1989, when a bomb went off in the luggage compartment. The blast resulted in the plane tearing apart mid-air, killing everyone on board - including Bonnie Barnes Pugh, wife of the U.S. Ambassador to Chad. Evidence traced the bomb back to Libya. Eighteen years after the attack and explosion over Sahara desert, of the UTA flight 772 from Congo to Paris, on September 19th 1989, the families of those who perished, gathered at the crash site and built a memorial. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2487064/Incredible-Google-Earth-image-1989-UTA-plane-crash-memorial.html http://www.greenprophet.com/2013/11/the-tragic-story-behind-haunting-plane-shaped-memorial-in-the-sahara-desert/ cc: Lalasticlala Dominique
