The Flag of Nigeria was designed in 1959 and first officially hoisted on October 1, 1960. The flag is a vertical bicolor of green and white. The two green stripes represent Nigeria's natural wealth, while the white band represents peace.

Old and worn-out and dirty flags should not be displayed publicly, as this is seen as disrespect to the country. Worn-out flags should be destroyed and changed immediately.

The flag is not only a national symbol but alsothe instrument of state power and the symbol of authority. It narrates the history, dreams and aspirations of the Nigerians people.

When carried in procession, the bearer is positioned in front and must be properly and neatly dressed.

Also in a procession where there are two flags with one being non-national, the national flag should always be in front.

Only special dignitaries are allowed to display the national flag in their vehicles, and should be displayed at the right fender of the car chassis oron the radiator cap.

They were influenced by the American struggle for independence and hoped to express solidarity with the U.S. in their own flags. For example, the Cuban flag, the Puerto Rican flag, the Panamanian flag and the Chilean flag are all in similar in color and design.

Every year, the Boy Scouts of America and military veteran organisations such as the American Legion burn thousands of US flags between them. This because Section 176 (k) of the US Flag Code (a set of rules on the correct treatment of the Stars and Stripes) provides that: “The flag, when itis in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.” Flag burnings (or “retirements”, to use the official term) are usually held on Flag Day, June 14.
