The popular nickname for USA’s flag is Betsy Ross, after the woman that made the first flag. The interesting facts about flags of USA is that it consists of thirteen horizontal red and white stripes that symbolize the first thirteen states that declared independence in 1776. The blue rectangular with the white stars represent the number of states. Today there are 50 of them, lined up in formations of 6-5-6-5-6-5-6-5-6.

Nepal.

This is the only country that does not have a standard rectangular flag, and in the same time it is the oldest official flag in the world. The blue frame stands for harmony and peace, reminiscent of Buddha, who was born here.

The flag of Mozambique has an AK-47 on it which stands for battle of freedom.

Green stands for agriculture, the black the African continent, the yellow the abundance of minerals, and the red the fight for independence. The coat of arms is unique and deeply symbolic. The red star stands for socialism, the book for education and progress and the hoe stands for agriculture.

The U.S. is the only country that does not dip its flag to the host country at the Olympics opening ceremonies. When the U.S. flag-holder was asked to do so for King Edward VII at the 1908 London games, he supposedly responded, “This flag dips to no earthly king.”

Lichtenstein and Haiti developed identical national flags independently of each other. No one realized until the two countries competed against each other in the 1936 Summer Olympics under the same flag.

Every year, the Boy Scouts of America and military veteran organisations such as the American Legion burn thousands of US flags between them. This because Section 176 (k) of the US Flag Code (a set of rules on the correct treatment of the Stars and Stripes) provides that: “The flag, when itis in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.” Flag burnings (or “retirements”, to use the official term) are usually held on Flag Day, June 14.

Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica were once united together as the United Provinces of Central America. The United Provinces flag used a blue and white flag. Today, the now-independent countries all still use a blue and white flag themselves, except for Costa Rica made the addition of red. Hondura’s flag bears fivestars to recall the original union of the United Provinces of Central America.

Some Central American, South American, and West Indian countries use red, white, and blue as colors and stars and stripes as design elements. They were influenced by the American struggle for independence and hoped to express solidarity with the U.S. in their own flags. For example, the Cuban flag, the Puerto Rican flag, the Panamanian flag and the Chilean flag are all in similar in color and design.

The large yellow star on China’s flag represents the leadership of the Communist Party. The smaller four stars represent economic classes: peasants, workers, petty bourgeoisie, and patriotic capitalists.
