HEAVY DOWNPOUR: PARTS OF LAGOS FLOODED AS ELECTRIC POLE FALLS IN GBAGADA
source: http://www.eyesoflagos.com/2017/05/heavy-downpour-parts-of-lagos-flooded.html

Following the heavy downpour on Thursday, May 25, 2017, some parts of Lagos have been left flooded with motorists, commuters and other passerby having difficulty to access these areas.
Due to the torrential rainfall, the drain pipes and gutters on DIya Street, Gbagada were blocked leading to flooding in the area. As a result, residents and other motorists have a difficult time in maneuvering the flood in the area.
The development however led to a concern for residents of the area who condemned the flood after the rainfall. The residents opined that for the road to be flooded with such a little downpour, then there would be much flood once it rains continuously in the axis.
This however prompted the residents to call on the government to come to their aid in the community.
Similarly, commuters along the usually busy WAEC bus stop few meters away from Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) were left to move along a water-logged area due to the downpour.
Part of the road which connects Herbert Macaulay Way to the popular Jibowu bus stop was flooded with motorists spending longer time to access the road.
Furthermore, a resident of Gbagada community has called on power distribution network, Ikeja Electric to swiftly react to fallen concrete electric poles and high tension cables in the area.
The high tension cables according to the resident fell beside the Deeper Life construction site in Ifako-Gbagada yesterday, Wednesday, May 24, 2017.
If urgent action is not taken, the incident could lead to loss of innocent lives and properties in Gbagada.

Politics / Governors Pass Vote Of Confidence On Osinbajo by eyesoflagostv: 5:56am On May 26, 2017
GOVERNORS PASS VOTE OF CONFIDENCE ON OSINBAJO
source: http://www.eyesoflagos.com/2017/05/governors-pass-vote-of-confidence-on.html

Governors yesterday passed a vote of confidence in the Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo for the way he has handled the country in the absence of President Muhammadu Buhari.
This was disclosed by Imo State governor,Rochas Okorocha after the National Economic Council meeting presided over by Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa.
He said members of the council lauded the leadership qualities of the Acting President, describing him as the “System Stabilizer.”
According to him, in a presentation by the governors, the acting President was told “this nation is very stable because of the role you play. God bless you our Acting President, thank you very much”.
He said the council then prayed that God Almighty should give the Acting President more strength to carry out the task of national re-engineering.
“But the highlight of the whole discussion today’s was a special commendation that the Council made on the Acting President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, who we have all resolved to call a system’s stabilizer given the fact that Mr. President is on medical vacation, the system is still as smooth as it has always been. So, we commended the Acting President for a job well done,” Okorocha said.
He also said that the council reviewed the country ‘s finances and asked the Accountant General of the Federation to probe the discrepancies in the excess crude account.
He stated that the Council reviewed many money issues as it affects the nation. “We were made to understand from the office of the Accountant General that the excess crude account as at May 24th stands at $2.3 billion.
“Council also reviewed the discrepancies in figures and we have said that the Accountant General will go to look at it and at the next meeting he will brief the council appropriately.”
He said the governors expressed concern over the challenges states are facing as regard the loan support in view of the fact that the country is gradually moving out of recession, it might create some lapses in the economy.
“As regards the loan support what is called the budget support facility for states which is supposed to come to an end by the end of this month, council was concerned about the fact that we are gradually coming out of recession and if this budgetary support ceases at the end of May, it might create some lapses in our bid to stabilize the economy. So council resolved that the budgetary support be extended to enable states catch up with the economy challenges of the moment.
“The good news is that we have been reliably informed that crude production at Forcados terminal will soon commence and this will in any small way help the economy and the stabilization of the economy and for us to get out of recession as quickly as possible,” he stated.

WHY WE ARE PROBING FAYEMI – FAYOSE
source: http://www.eyesoflagos.com/2017/05/why-we-are-probing-fayemi-fayose.html

The Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has explained the reasons his government is probing the financial transactions of the administration of his predecessor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi.

Fayose said apart from the N25bn bond Fayemi took from the capital market, the administration also took N31bn commercial loans which the Securities and Exchange Commission now wanted the state government to take responsibility for.

He stated this in Ado-Ekiti on Monday night while featuring in an interview programme on state radio and television.

Fayose, through his deputy, Dr. Kolapo Olusola‎, had on Monday morning inaugurated a Judicial Commission of Enquiry to probe the finances of the state under Fayemi from October 2010 to October 2014.

Saying that the bond was meant for projects such as civic centre, state pavilion, new Governor’s Office, new Government House, the governor said most of the projects were never completed.

He‎ added that the N31bn commercial loans were also wasted and the state committed to serving the loans with about N1.1bn monthly until the year 2036.

“Also, that administration misappropriated funds given to the State Universal Basic Education Board by the Universal Basic Education Commission leading to the suspension of our state from UBEC support for some years.

“The SEC wrote me to take responsibility for the loans, even though they too derelict in their responsibility of monitoring how the funds were spent.

“Very annoying is also the fact that the representatives of our people – members of the Ekiti State House of Assembly – invited Fayemi repeatedly, he refused to appear before them to explain how the funds were spent.

“His Finance Commissioner also took a cue from him, he refused to appear before the lawmakers too. The lawmakers had to pass a resolution mandating the state government to set up that panel and I am not a law breaker, I have to obey the people’s voice.

“The panel is made up of honourable people and will not witch-hunt anybody. If they don’t have any skeleton in their cupboards, let them appear before it,” he said.

Poor fed govt’s ideas led Nigeria into recession – Soludo
source: http://www.eyesoflagos.com/2017/05/poor-fed-govts-ideas-led-nigeria-into.html

A former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, on Thursday said poor ideas by the Federal Government’s policy makers caused the economic downturn in the country.
He added that fixing the nation’s economy was not rocket science.
Soludo’s position was contained in a paper he delivered at the 2017 International Conference of the Department of Business Administration of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State.
The theme of the conference was “Managing a recessed economy; options for Nigeria.”
Soludo noted that Nigeria slipped into recession barely a year after the President Muhammadu Buhari administration took over power, stressing that the inability of the country’s policy makers to rise to the challenge plunged the economy into crisis.
He said the recession was avoidable had proactive steps been taken.
He said, “Poor ideas transcended over superior ideas, and we went into recession which was slightly avoidable. That is why academics must be alive to their responsibility of nudging us to reality; the reason I commend you for this international conference.
“Success and failure are all in the mind and only those who persist get to their destination.
“The recession Nigeria went into was largely avoidable and for things to change for the better, Nigeria cannot afford intellectual isolation because there is a need for exchange of ideas among intellectuals from various fields to put things right.
“Though economic crisis started in 2007 when most countries were witnessing recession, the Nigerian economy was growing because of the power of ideas of the people in charge. Instead of sustaining the growth, we drove the economy into this recession.
“For example, between 2010 and 2014, oil price was above $100 per barrel but we were unable to accumulate foreign reserve. When I took over as the CBN Governor, foreign reserve was about $10bn and we kept growing it on an annual basis as a deliberate policy such that it was over $45bn by the time I left.
“In 2010, I warned that if oil price went down to below $40 per barrel, most states would not be able to meet their obligations and that was exactly what happened. So, the problem was that we were not saving and we were even borrowing to implement recurrent expenditures.
“We were borrowing for consumption and for capital projects with the result that all the money we spent was borrowed at a time.
“When the oil price slumped, some people in government even felt that it was not going to last and continued their spending spree. Some also felt that the exchange rate could be fixed and some of us warned that doing so would result to high inflation.
“And when the problem manifested, a fire-fighting approach was adopted by the CBN which decided to give bailout to states. Because of these responses, the economy witnessed a shock and we thought we could reinvent economic theory and principle as a unique Nigerian approach.”
The former CBN boss, however, expressed optimism that the recently launched economic recovery plan of the Buhari government could lead to recovery, especially as there was a mounting pressure on government to perform because election was approaching.
He advised that the number of items in the exclusive list should be reduced in favour of states.
“We do not have to be running to Abuja for everything and that was why I was surprised when some people canvassed that local governments should be going to Abuja to take their allocations directly,” he said.
According to him, the first step should be to revert the control of minerals to the states, which he said should pay taxes to the Federal Government.

EYO FESTIVAL CELEBRATION TO HOLD ON MAY 20 AT TAFAWABALEWA SQUARE LAGOS

According to the official twitter handle of the Lagos State who share that the Eyo Festival Celebration is to be held at Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos.

The Eyo Festival, otherwise known as the Adimu Orisha Play, is a Yoruba festival unique to Lagos, Nigeria.[1] In modern times, it is presented by the people of Lagos as a tourist event and,[2] due to its history, is traditionally performed on Lagos Island.

The word "Eyo" also refers to the costumed dancers, known as the masquerades that come out during the festival. The origins of this observance are found in the inner workings of the secret societies of Lagos.[3] Back in the days, The Eyo festival is held to escort the soul of a departed Lagos King or Chief and to usher in a new king. It is widely believed that the play is one of the manifestations of the customary African revelry that serves as the forerunner of the modern carnival in Brazil.[4] On Eyo Day, the main highway in the heart of the city (from the end of Carter Bridge to Tinubu Square) is closed to traffic, allowing for procession from Idumota to the Iga Idunganran palace. The white-clad Eyo masquerades represent the spirits of the dead, and are referred to in Yoruba as "agogoro Eyo" (literally: "tall Eyo"wink.[5]

An Eyo Iga Olowe Salaye masquerade jumping.
The first procession in Lagos was on the 20th of February, 1854, to commemorate the life of the Oba Akintoye.[6]
Here, the participants all pay homage to the reigning Oba of Lagos. The festival takes place whenever occasion and tradition demand, though it is usually held as part of the final burial rites of a highly regarded chief in the king's court.[1]
Among the Yorubas, the indigenous religions have largely lost the greater majority of their traditional followers to Christianity and Islam. Be that as it may, the old festivals are still almost universally observed as tourist attractions which generate a lot of revenue for government and small businesses around the Lagos Island venue of the Eyo festival. It is during these occasions that their traditional monarchs and nobles exercise the most of their residual power.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Tuesday arraigned two self-acclaimed whistleblowers, Buhari Fannami and Ba-Kura Abdullahi on two separate charges before Justice M. T Salihu of the Federal High Court Maiduguri, for allegedly giving false information to the agency.

The EFCC said in a statement by its spokesman, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, that Fannamit had misled the commission with the information about illegally acquired monies purportedly buried at the residence of one Ba’a Lawan but the information turned out to be false after the execution of a search warrant.

The charge reads, “That you, Buhari Fannami, on or about the 8th day of May, 2017 at Maiduguri, Borno State, within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, did make statement to officers of the EFCC under the whistleblower policy to the effect that large sums of money being the proceeds of crime were buried in the residence Ba’a Lawan at Pompomari Layout along Pompomari Bypass, Maiduguri which information/statement you knew to be false and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under sections 39 (2) (a) and 39 (2) (b) of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (Establishment) Act 2004 respectively.”

Fannami pleaded not guilty to the charge. Counsel for the prosecution, Alkassim Ja’afar, asked for a trial date and prayed the court to remand the accused person in the prison custody pending trial.

Justice Salihu adjourned the matter till June 7 and 8, 2017 for hearing and ordered the accused to be remanded in the prison custody.

On his part, Ba-Kura Abdullahi allegedly gave false information to the effect that large sum of money in naira and foreign currencies were buried in the residence of Ba’a Lawan.

Justice Salihu adjourned his case till June 7 and 8, 2017 for commencement of trial and ordered the accused to be remanded in the prison custody.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) yesterday injected $457.3 million into various segments of the foreign exchange market, even as the naira remained stable at N385 per dollar in the parallel market.

Meanwhile the CBN also disclosed that the Investors and Exporters (I&E) foreign exchange window has so far attracted $600 million from autonomous sources and from the apex bank. Acting Director, Corporate Communications at the Central Bank of Nigeria, Isaac Okorafor, disclosed these developments saying a breakdown of the $457.3 million offered yesterday indicates that both the spot and forwards segments received a total of $267.3 million while the wholesale segment got $100 million.

H said that the SME and invisibles segments comprising of basic travel allowance, tuition fee and medical got and $50 million and $40 million respectively.

He added that the volume of trading on the Investors and Exporters foreign exchange window in the past three weeks on the FMDQ platform revealed that the sum of $600 million has for been sold by both the CBN and autonomous sources.

A survey of the parallel market yesterday revealed that the parallel market exchange rate which closed last week at N385 per dollar closed at the same level yesterday.

The stability was attributed to the expected CBN dollar sale of $20,000 each of the over 3000 bureaux de change (BDCs) today. The naira also maintained its stability at the Investors and Exporters (I&E) foreign exchange window, with exchange rate of N383 per dollar.

The Redeemed Christian Church of God General Overseer (Worldwide), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, in Jos on Sunday urged Christians in the country not to lose hope but to believe that there is no problem impossible for God to solve.

The cleric also urged Nigerians to maintain a peaceful disposition towards one another, no matter the situation they find themselves, saying it was only through such acts that their prayers would be answered.

Adeboye spoke at the RCCG inter-denominational service held at Kassa in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, where he rounded up the RCCG 2017 Northern Ministers and Workers Conference, with the theme, “The Almighty.”

At the event, the Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong, called on citizens to live in peace and support his administration to achieve its mandate.

Adeboye’s message was taken from the Book of Genesis 17:1-10.

He said, “Know that there is a God who is the Almighty; hide nothing from Him no matter the situation but put your trust in Him and the Almighty will be available to you. Though you have no one to help, the Almighty will help, remember that He knows all.”

A son of Osama bin Laden, Hamza, is reportedly seeking to avenge his father’s death and is poised to become the new leader of terrorists group, Al Qaeda.
Personal letters discovered during the raid that killed bin Laden show that Hamza, is set on avenging his father’s death.
A former FBI agent, Ali Soufan, told CBS News in an interview that will air Sunday.
Soufan said of Bin Laden son, “He tells him that, he remembers ‘every look… every smile you gave me, every word you told me.”
Soufan also said that Hamza wrote that he considers himself “to be forged in steel.”

TOYOTA BOSS LAMENTS NIGERIA’S LOWEST VEHICLE SALES RECORD IN DECADES
source: http://www.eyesoflagos.com/2017/05/toyota-boss-laments-nigerias-lowest.html

The Managing Director of Toyota Nigeria Limited, Mr. Kunle Ade Ojo, has lamented the poor vehicle sales recorded in the country in the first quarter of the year which fell to an all time low of 2,000 vehicles within the period.

Briefing newsmen at their Lekki, Lagos office during their quarterly meeting, the managing director disclosed that the total sales figure of vehicles across the country including all brands stood at 2,000 units when compared to 5,500 vehicles sold within the same period in 2016. He, therefore, forecast that given the way the industry was going, it would be difficult for all the car companies to sell 9,000 vehicle before the end of the year

He attributed the poor sales and import figure of vehicles to scarcity of foreign exchange, devaluation of the naira, high interest rate and high duty being paid by automobile companies in the country.

Ade-Ojo said, “The scarcity of foreign exchange, devaluation of the naira and the high interest rate coupled with the economic shortfall hiked prices of vehicles and crippled buying power of many buyers,” adding that 3500 units of vehicles were imported in the first quarter of 2016, while 350 units of vehicles were imported in the first quarter of 2017, the lowest in the last decade. Annual imiport vehicle figure before 2016 was between 50,000 to 100,000. He added that even with recent efforts made by the government to tackle the forex challenge, the sector has not seen positive results, stressing that vehicles were being overvalued by customs official at ports of entry.

“If we add everything we pay like VAT and other taxes, you will discover that the vehicle importer pays as much as 85 per cent duty on a single car,” noting that his company paid as much as N15m on one Land Cruiser vehicle. Despite all the challenges, he said that Toyota still leads the market in terms of vehicle sales and import and attributed Toyota’s lead to quality of product, excellent after sales and availability of spare parts.

According to him, Toyota sold about 7,000 cars in 2015 and about 4,000 vehicles in 2016 to further its share from 24 per cent in 2015 to about 26 per cent in 2016.

The total retail market in the country stood at 42, 000 in the country in 2015 and fell to about 15, 000 by the end of 2016 to indicate market drop of about 42 per cent.

Ade-Ojo added that vehicle import for 2015 was at 18, 000 but came down to 7, 000 in by the end of 2016. Despite the challenges in the market, the company has continued to lead the sector, importing 43 per cent of the vehicles in 2015 and in 2016 has share of 38 per cent

CAPITAL RELEASES HIT N1.2 TRILLION FOR 2016
source: http://www.eyesoflagos.com/2017/05/capital-releases-hit-n12-trillion-for.html

As the 2016 budget closes, the Federal Ministry of Finance says N1.2 trillion capital releases have been made in line with government’s increased focus on capital expenditure.
The Director of Information, Salisu Dambatta, in a statement on Thursday, said power, construction and housing sectors got the largest share of the releases made in 2016.
He said the Federal Government’s ability to cash-back capital releases of N1.2 trillion was a reflection of its commitment to infrastructure development
“The following releases were made: Power, Works and Housing received the largest allocation of N307.4 billion.
“This is followed by Defence and Security, N171.9 billion and Transport and Aviation, N143.12 billion.
“Other sectors were Agriculture and Water Resources; and Education and Health,” it stated.
Mr. Dambatta said the sectors accounted for 62 per cent of total capital released as the priority sectors to stimulate economic activities and job creation.
He said that the capital releases excluded the capital element in releases to statutory agencies such as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Judiciary.
He said that the government was making effort to attract private capital to compliment government spending in the key areas.
It will be recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari had presented a 2016 budget proposal of N6.07 trillion.
Nigeria’s 2016 Budget was based on a crude oil benchmark price of 38 dollars per barrel and a production estimate of 2.2 million barrels per day for 2016.
Capital Expenditure was estimated to be N1.8 trillion while non debt recurrent expenditure was N2.65 trillion

LAGOS STATE GOVERNOR ORDERS VIOS OUT OF LAGOS ROADS WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT
source: http://www.eyesoflagos.com/2017/05/lagos-state-governor-orders-vios-out-of.html

Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode has ordered the state’s Vehicle Inspection Officers, VIOs out of Lagos roads with immediate effect.

It was gathered that since last week, the VIOs, under the Vehicle Inspection Service, VIS, had left all Lagos roads on the order of Ambode.

Government sources said the governor ordered the VIOs out of the road for retraining as a result of public complaints and in a bid to reposition the outfit.

A source revealed to Eyes Of Lagos that the story carried by a national daily recently which alleged that the VIOs burnt the vehicle of a motorist arrested had not gone down well with the governor who would not tolerate unruliness in his administration.

Asides this, some complaints about supposed high-handedness and over-zealousness of some VIOs were other reasons the governor ordered them out of Lagos roads until further instruction.

A VIO source told our reporter that the officers had been ordered by the governor to go on compulsory retraining on the use of modern technology in order to be humane in dealing with the public.

It was gathered that the no training had been arranged since the officers left the road last week as they were still watching and waiting for the next action to be taken by the state government on the matter.

A top government source who does not want his name mentioned said the order by the governor for VIOs to vacate Lagos road was unconnected with the alleged report of assaulting a motorist and burning the vehicle.

A VIO source alleged that the driver lied against the officers as the agency could not have carried out such debilitating action.

A source added that the Ministry of Transportation was working frantically to arrange training for VIOs so that they could get back on the road soonest, but that for now, they would be off the road on the order of the governor.

The state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Steve Ayorinde, in his reaction said: “The truth is the transport ministry is undergoing restructuring, including the VIO. The commissioner for transportation had made some recommendations, which he will present at the State Executive Council meeting and things can move forward from there.

“But we all believed that the VIO activities should be technologically driven.”

TRAPPED IN SILENCE: WHEN MEN BECOME VICTIMS - EYESOFLAGOS
SOURCE: http://www.eyesoflagos.com/2017/05/trapped-in-silence-when-men-become.html

I hear a lot of ladies make the claim that all men are the same; wicked, heartless and deceitful manipulators of ladies’ emotions. Unconsciously, we have attributed the role of the “abuser” in the relationship to the men and have made the women to always appear as the “victim”. Let me be one of the few ladies to burst this fallacy and speak the truth. I believe that men are being misjudged just because they do not express themselves the way we as ladies do. Emotional abuse is not a ladies’ thing. All men are not the same and men become victims of emotional abuse and manipulation as well, trapped in silence, too afraid to speak up for fear of being perceived as weak.

Let me come directly and speak to the man reading this right now. I know you think what is going on in your life is normal but it is not. If you do not know what emotional abuse means, allow me to define it to you. In a relationship, be it a dating, friend-zoned or brother-zoned scenario, the woman in the picture uses those feelings you have for her to her selfish advantage, sometimes in the subtlest of ways to gain control in the relationship, thus making you feel unworthy and like you are not enough. Let's take a walk, shall we?
• You’ve known for a while that your relationship has switched from being a love zone to being a war zone; always at each other’s throat, her screaming and raining curses on you and you ignoring her in hopes that she’d finally get the memo and shut up. You’ve tried to please her by yielding to her unnecessary demands. Perhaps, she has even taken charge of your social life, cutting off every friend that she sees as a threat to her reign in your life and constantly checking your emails, messages and chats just to be sure you have not engaged another lady. With her, you can never be or feel like man because all she does is tear you apart with her words instead of building you up. Everything you do becomes a point of displeasure to her; an opportunity to start nagging, cursing and crying. She threatens to kill herself or do something hurtful each time you try to leave and she goes as far as calling your mutual friends and even your family to beg on her behalf [none of whom know your struggle because to them, she is an angel to hold on to]. She promises to be a good girl and then reverts back to be the charming lady you fell for. Just when you think she has changed for the better, something sets her off again and then you are back to square one again. What is worse is that no one may believe that you are the one who is being abused and not her because you’ve been told that only weak men allow their women to get out of control.
• She is not as obvious as the naggers but she is damn manipulative; using those things you hold so dearly to manipulate you into giving into her demands. For those in sexually active relationships (which I do not think is right by the way), she uses sex as a bargaining chip. She does it so playfully and subtly that you may never even notice her motive until it is too late.
• She is only happy & available when there is money and then withdraws when the chips are down, only to return again when the economy smiles at you.
• She is that friend you have always loved but have never had the opportunity to let her know because you have been friend-zoned. She only comes to you when there is trouble in paradise “her relationship”, uses you as her comfort food and then walks away when peace has returned. She never stops to see the sad look in your eyes or how torturing it is for you as you patiently listen to her tell the tales of the joys and woes of her relationships. Sometimes, she gives you the impression that she is available and just when you start to see a chance with her, she runs off again. You try to pick the pieces of your life and forget her but before you know it, she is back again with tales of her relationship woes and then you are back to square one again.

There is a lot more scenarios but just because I do not like my articles running too long, I will draw the curtain with this. For how long do you intend to keep lying to yourself, your friends and everyone in your life about the true state of your relationship? Some of them have even perceived the truth of your situation and have tried to warn you about her but you have refused to listen. What are you so afraid of? You do not need to prove anything to anybody. You were created a man so please act like one. Perhaps, you have tried to leave severally but somehow, she always finds a way to rope you back in. I’d have you know that only you can end this. God has already given you that authority. Use it wisely and walk away from that relationship before it destroys you more than it already has. Let me make an emphasis here. Jumping into another relationship is the worst decision you will ever make. You need time alone to heal. The only relationship you are permitted to jump into after this is a relationship with God. Let Him heal you and teach you to love again. It is a gradual process but until you choose to begin, you will never really know what a real relationship should look like. I know this is not what you hear every day neither is it what you expected to read at the end of this but it is a solution that never fails. Just do it the right way. Walk away from that relationship before it ruins you.
P.S: As far as being a victim goes, it can happen to anyone. Do not be too quick to condemn someone who is already a victim, calling them “cowards”. If you know someone who is trapped in silence, please pray for them and encourage them till they find the courage to leave that relationship and begin to heal.

The Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has been awarded the sum of two million dollars ($2m) by the Cancer Research Institute (CRI) in the United States, for research into the treatment of the disease.
This was made known by the head of a visiting team of medical researchers from the (CRI), Dr. Peter Kingham, during a courtesy call on the acting Vice-Chancellor, ProfTony Elujoba, to appreciate the university administration for the backing given to cancer researchers at the College of Health Sciences in the quest to find a permanent yet affordable cure for cancer.
A release by the public relations officer of the university, Abiodun Olarewaju, stated that Dr. Kingham, who expressed elation at the growing relationship between CRI and the OAU Medical College, noted that the synergy actually began in 2010 with a ten (10) year plan which surprisingly was attained within a few years.
He further commended the commitment and dexterity of their colleagues at the Obafemi Awolowo University, saying the team is delighted to be collaborating with very passionate and hardworking professionals who are determined to leave no stone unturned in the initiative to find cure to one of the leading causes of death in the world today.
Welcoming the CRI delegation, the Vice-Chancellor, was thankful to the American institute for the philanthropic gesture, assuring them that the donation would be judiciously utilized.
Professor Elujoba challenged the researchers not relent in their efforts to find a permanent cure for cancer, which has hitherto defied cure, adding that the team should work assiduously toward making people seek help early enough instead of resorting to other means that would compound or worsen their conditions.
While speaking the Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Professor Adesegun Fatusi, said the visit of the CRI delegation to the University is to further cement the research-and-training relationship that was established in 2010 with a view to helping mankind live well and long enough.
He seized the opportunity of the visit to again appreciate the donor, CRI (US), for the confidence reposed in Obafemi Awolowo University Medical College researchers, promising that the funds will be prudently spent.
The medical team from CRI (US) led by Dr. Kingham included: Jesse Joshua Smith; Brooke Sylvester; Peter Ntiamoah; Liz Sutton; Cynthia Thornton; and Paula Garcia.
In a related development, the university administration has commended members of the Ife Ooye OAU Alumni of North America, a group of Ife indigenes who graduated from the Obafemi Awolowo University Medical College, for their medical missions to the Ife Township and the campus community in particular.
The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council, Dr. Yemi Ogunbiyi, who gave this commendation while speaking at a dinner in honour of the visiting alumni group, asserted that the university is proud that the alumni have kept the flag of the university flying as worthy ambassadors.

PMB’S ABSENCE AT FEC ON DOCTOR’S ADVICE – LAI MOHAMMED
source: http://www.eyesoflagos.com/2017/05/pmbs-absence-at-fec-on-doctors-advice.html

The federal government has explained that President Muhammadu Buhari’s absence at yesterday’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting followed advice by his doctors that he should further make out time to rest.
It also dismissed reports suggesting that the president was incapacitated and was being fed intravenously, describing them as absolute bunkers.
Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed stated this, while briefing State House correspondents after yesterday’s FEC meeting presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at the presidential villa, Abuja.
Mohammed who said the president chose to rest yesterday noted that Buhari will soon be going back to the United Kingdom for further treatment.
He said, “On why the president was not at the meeting, you are also aware that the president was at his office yesterday and he worked at his office yesterday. A few days before now, we came out to say he has been asked to take some rest by his doctors, and he chose today to rest and not to attend the Federal Executive Council meeting.
“We want to take this opportunity to thank Nigerians who have expressed a lot of concern and sympathy and who have been praying for him. Like we have always said, Mr president will stick to his doctor’s advice so that he can recover much more quickly.
”We thank all of them for their concern. I think it shows how concerned Nigerians are about the health of the president and all their suggestions are being taken on board.
On reports that the president is incapacitated and was being fed intravenously, the minister said, “The answer to your first question is absolute bunkers. It is absolutely untrue that he is being fed. He was in the office yesterday as you all reported. And if the doctors say he should take a rest, ‘I think you’ll recover faster when you rest when you ought to rest, rather than by forcing yourself to work when you are not fit to work”.
Mohammed maintained that all the president was doing is following the doctor’s advice, even as he said, “Mr president himself told the nation he has never been this sick and he is going to take it easy. He said it from day one when he came back from the UK”.
According to him, whatever is happening today is not any strange development, but exactly what the president had said.
“So, I don’t think its anything that is out of the place from what he said. He has been quite transparent and upfront in the matter concerning his health”, the minister said.
The president’s absence yesterday at the meeting was the third consecutive time the president would be staying away from FEC.
On how the Buhari administration will mark its two years in office on May 29, the Minister said, “In our very normal customary way we are going to mark it because we have a lot of story to tell. We are proud that within two years we have made tremendous progress.
“We have been able to restructure the economy on a very sound footing. We have succeeded in not just looking for quick fixes, but we are addressing the fundamental issues of our economy and which is basically that we are moving away from relying solely on oil to other areas like agriculture, solid minerals and the rest.
“But more importantly, in the area of the economy, is that for the first time our emphasis is now more on infrastructure, on capital projects, rather than on recurrent. And in the area of fighting insecurity and the criminality in the North East, we have a good story to tell. In the area of fighting corruption, we have a good story to tell, in agriculture we have a good story to tell”.

source: http://www.eyesoflagos.com/2017/05/my-sons-wedding-occultic-ceremony.html

Wife of former President, Taiwo Obasanjo has said that the wedding between her son, Olujunwo and Tope Adebutu is an occultic ceremony which will result in feast of death.

In a statementon Tuesday, Obasanjo said that the May 11 and 13, 2017 chosen by both the Obasanjo and Adebutu family for their children’s wedding was compelled by Satan to lure unsuspecting numerous souls to a banquet of death that would herald in strange holocaust in the country.

Obasanjo who had earlier lost an attempt to use the court to stop the wedding, stated that her plea to family members on the evil consequences of the wedding date and the need to postpone it fell on deaf ears.

She also claimed that her daughter-in-law, Tope and and her mother, Rosemary Dacosta intended to use the wedding to prolong their life and renew their covenant with Satan.

She warned those attending the wedding that immediately after the wedding, there would be strange diseases, multiple road accidents, plane crashes, fire incidents and strange death across the country.

Obasanjo insisted that her son had been bewitched and cast under a spell and that all entreaty to make him see reason why the wedding should be postponed has failed.

She stated that on the day of the wedding, she will led a peaceful protest march at the venue since all her effort to stop the wedding seem to have failed.

” Please I want the whole world to know that I am not mad and I am not against my son’s wedding but the whole truth will be revealed by the almighty God who sees in secret all that is hidden. I have written to the Nigerian Police and the Military Police of my intention to peacefully have a protest as a citizen of Nigeria. Me and my people shall be peacefully singing, dancing and praising God,” she said.

In a separate letter to the Prelate, Methodist Church of Nigeria urging the church to consider rescheduling the wedding, Obasanjo said she would continue to pray for the liberation of her son from the spell cast on him.

Campaigns for the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari seems to have kicked off in Abuja and Benue State.
This we gathered from a reliable source in based in Abuja and our correspondent in Benue. The duo reveals that posters seeking for the second term of the president have flooded the city of Makurdi, the capital of Benue State. According to our Abuja source, he said the poster was also seen in some strategic places in the city of Abuja.
However, in Markurdi Workers who were resuming from May Day holiday noticed that the walls in the ancient town have been littered with posters campaigning for Buhari’s second term.

The posters flooded areas like High Level round about, fence and gate of Federal Medical Center, Wurukum Round-about and other areas in Makurdi Town.
The posters bears the logo of All the All Progressives Congress, APC with an inscription that says, ‘Nigerians resolve Buhari 2019, after healing come greatness, just believe.’
Speaking with newsmen, an indigene, who gave his name simply as Ogbole said, ‘I begin to ponder what manner of people Nigeria is made of. We are having an ailing president that needs our prayer, but sponsors of the posters are making mess of the issue.’

The Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, on Monday allayed fears that plans by his administration to phase out the yellow commercial buses, popularly known as Danfo, would lead to massive job losses, saying that it would instead create more jobs in the transportation sector.

Ambode spoke at the May Day Rally held at the Agege Stadium to commemorate the 2017 Workers Day Celebration.

He said the Bus Reform Initiative, aimed at introducing over 5,000 air-conditioned buses to replace the Danfo buses, would open new vista of opportunities, while also redefining the means of road transportation in the State.

Responding to the fears raised by the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Lagos State Council, Comrade Idowu Adelakun, and his Trade Union Congress counterpart, Comrade Francis Ogunremi, on the implications of the initiative to drivers, conductors, mechanics and other artisans, Ambode assured that it would benefit all Lagosians on the long run.

He said: “If Lagos is to be globally competitive, we need to change the outlook of the way the city runs. What is of paramount interest to this government is to make sure that every Lagosian has a comfortable means of moving from one point to the other. But I promise you there will be no job losses.

“The Governor is not interested in driving all the new buses. It is the same bus drivers, the technicians, the mechanics that will also still be employed and trained to use these new buses. Instead of job losses, we are going to employ more people for the greater number of the buses and it will make the city more beautiful and more comfortable for all our workers.”

Ambode, who also addressed the request of the labour leaders on workers’ welfare, assured that as the State’s Internally Generated Revenue continues to increase, his administration would work out modalities to improve the welfare of workers in line with his mantra of all-inclusive governance.
The Governor said his administration was ready to look into the plight of pensioners as regards the pace of paying pension, assuring that the process would be fast-tracked immediately.

He said: “Just like we have said, we have provided vehicles for the unions but again it has not gone round and it has also not gone round to the private sector unions, we will complete the whole scheme before the end of the year.”

Ambode said as part of the celebration of 50 years of the State, his administration would provide a befitting State Secretariat for the NLC, while the government would also work on local and international training for labour leaders to make them relevant to the growth of the economy.

Governor Ambode also assured that the officers of the State Public Service, who according to him are the real drivers of the development in the State, would continue to be equipped with the necessary competencies and skills in order to deliver effective and efficient service to the people.

Commending the choice of this year’s May Day celebration, themed: “Labour Relations in Economic Recession: An Appraisal,” the Governor said the leadership of Labour unions had demonstrated a responsible sense of stakeholding in the joint enterprise to improve the society and leave lasting legacies for the generations to come through the creation of sustainable wealth and value.

Besides, the Governor enjoined the organised labour to continue to show understanding, while rightly insisting on the due and just entitlements of their members, saying that any industrial unrest will compound the challenges of economic recession.

“I wish to commend the example of Lagos State to the entire nation in respect of industrial harmony. In Lagos State, both the government and organised labour believe that negotiations are more democratic and effective than unilateral impositions by the government or unilateral demands by the workers,” he said.

While alluding to the fact that his administration would not have been able to fulfill the electoral promises without the support of the “most versatile, resilient and innovative Public Service in the nation”, he noted that the immense contributions of all workers in the private sector was also chiefly responsible for the pride of place that Lagos occupies in our nation, in Africa and in the world at large.

Earlier, Comrades Adelakun and Ogunremi commended Ambode for his commitment to workers’ welfare and the determination with which he had been transforming the State, describing the Governor as an accomplished accounting professional, creative intellectual, skilled planner and focused implementor.

The May Day Rally featured March pasts from various Labour Unions, Trade Organisations and its Affiliates who trooped out en masse despite the heavy downpour and were excited to see the Governor celebrate the day with them.
